DEAR HPS MEMBERS AND PARTICIPANTS, RANSFORMATION HAS BEEN OUR THEME FOR FISCAL YEAR 2013. Through smart modifications, HPS continually strives to provide you, our members, with the tools and resources necessary to manage your purchases and budget more efficiently. By implementing technology enhancements, focusing on our growth model and value added services, and renovating a more advantageous office environment, we are determined to deliver exceptional service and increase your bottom line. The year started out with a bang when HPS initiated a series of innovative technological improvements. We instituted a new internal database, transitioning the system to a web-based platform to increase functionality and reporting flexibility. Several data infrastructure improvements were established to handle the necessary data requirements to support our members and business partners, including a new server system allowing for higher availability of data and more effective back-up security. We appreciate and consider the comments received from our members and encourage you to continue to share your invaluable feedback. As a result, we have introduced HPScat, our new online contract analysis tool, and a USDA commodity planner tool to enhance our service delivery. At HPS, we not only value relationships with our members and participants, we highly regard our vendors and business partners. Our growth model involves strengthening our connection with existing partners and developing new relationships to enrich the benefits for our members as we gradually expand our footprint. We continue to offer significant regional contracts to optimize utilization and increase their savings. Our sustainable model for growth can be credited with the successes we’ve celebrated throughout the past year. Contract volume reached an all-time high of nearly $900 million, a 3.45 percent increase over 2012. HPS members received rebates totaling over $14 million, a 12.3 percent increase over last year. We added 199 new members this past year, bringing our membership total to more than 3,200.

As we plan for the future and look at the forecast for the next ten to fifteen years, HPS recognizes the need to prepare for our growing membership. In order to remain true to our mission, we have decided to improve our home base. The goal of renovating our corporate headquarters is to enhance our office environment, add work stations for anticipated staff growth, and provide ample amount of meeting space to host our numerous and growing committees, vendor partners, and board members. Preparation today is our strategy for future success. We embrace change as an opportunity to align ourselves for the next generation and celebrate the creation of a solid foundation of an organization that will remain intact, serving our membership for years to come. It is the constant support of the HPS membership that has given HPS its purpose and we are committed to continue a tradition of excellent service and maintain the reputation we have earned to date. Thank you for helping us make 2013 a successful year and for allowing HPS the continued opportunity to serve you in the future. Sincerely, Dwight Gascho Chairman, HPS Board of Managers Thomas J. La Pres HPS President/CEO

“Over the past year, HPS has assisted our practices in understanding our purchases, what is connected to HPS/MedAssets contracts, and how we can better utilize the program. It is the personal service and time commitment to the members that makes HPS a valued partner to the Physicians Organization of Western Michigan.” —Sue Kuzee, Administrative Manager at Physicians Organization of Western Michigan

ADMINISTRATION AND TECHNOLOGY The HPS administration team is the backbone to taking HPS to the next level in the technology world. One of the primary focuses of the administration team this fiscal year, has been making enhancements to the data network. HPS has continued to improve our technology infrastructure by investing in technologies that offer the greatest flexibility and opportunity for growth. We have accomplished our goal of 100% virtualization of our servers, utilizing shared storage and unified backup solutions to provide higher availability, longer data retention, faster deployment and provisioning, and lower power and cooling usage. Other technological advances throughout the company include: HPS Commodity Planner - The commodity planner was designed to help our school members in the state of Michigan to maximize the use of their USDA commodity dollars in their school food lunch programs. The planner was created to offer our Michigan school members a streamlined system to order and track their food purchases. HPS Contract Analysis Tool (CAT) - The contract manager was developed in a partnership with MedProcure to give members utilizing our dietary program a way to maximize their savings by being contract compliant. The system will benefit our members by giving them the tools that will assist them to make better cost saving decisions as it relates to purchasing items through HPS regional contracts. HPS Maveric - The new HPS database is a member and vendor tracking system which allows us to manage our members from a market segment, program usage, communication and data analysis perspective. The development of this system will benefit the membership by giving us the ability to track our members’ usage of the entire HPS program and make recommendations to help maximize their savings. In addition, the administration department has been busy issuing rebate checks equaling the largest return on investment our members have seen to date; over $13 million. The graph below represents the money returned to our members in comparison to the annual membership dues. Currently, with the help of our dietary and medical surgical programs, HPS returns almost $11 million more than what is being paid annually for dues.

MEMBER DEVELOPMENT Medical and Medical Associates: Both Acute and Non-acute facilities including hospitals, surgery centers and physician offices In fiscal year 2013, the Member Development team concentrated on the management of information for our medical members. Due to the speed of information and the ever-changing healthcare environment, the HPS team collaborated with MedAssets and our vendor partners to determine and simplify communication processes going into fiscal year 2014. Medical and medical associates represent 16% of our overall membership, therefore, HPS strives to be a resource to these facilities and provide relevant purchasing advice and tools. Senior Living: Skilled nursing, assisted living and independent living facilities comprise the HPS senior living category The senior living membership is the second largest membership segment at 28%. Both independent facilities and chains joined HPS in fiscal year 2013, which results in senior living being one of the fastest growing membership segments. In 2013, 81 senior living facilities were added to the membership. The Accountable Care Act continues to impact every medical segment of our membership. During the annual business review process, the HPS Member Development team discusses with our members other opportunities for HPS programs and resources. As a result of these conversations, HPS is working with our vendor partners to provide tools beyond contract pricing needed to succeed in this new healthcare environment. Education: Public and private K-12 school systems, colleges, and universities comprise the education HPS membership The first school district joined HPS in the 1980s and at the end of fiscal year 2013, 1,172 members represent the education segment. This segment grew by 72 members in 2013, and holds the largest percentage of membership at 36%. In order to be in compliance with the USDA regulations, HPS received and responded to over 20 third party purchasing agreements for the states of Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky and Michigan. These agreements designate HPS as the procurement agent for the school district and ensure that HPS is following federal procurement guidelines. In addition, HPS spent time working with the departments of education and public instruction in 2013. These efforts are focused on understanding the interpretation of procurement regulations related to the National School Lunch Program. HPS developed a USDA Foods web-based tool to become an administrator of USDA foods for our members. HPS is now able to respond to the needs of members in both commercial and commodity purchases depending on the needs of each state. Associates: The associate members of HPS include camps, senior meals, county and religious organizations In fiscal year 2013, 43 new members joined the associate membership segment. This membership segment consists of camps, senior meals programs, and county government, among other entities that provide food to the communities they serve. These members benefit from HPS membership more than any other segment. When HPS performs an evaluation, we typically save these facilities between 10-15% on their food costs. Associate members represent nearly 20% of the entire membership.

CONTRACTS In fiscal year 2013, the medical and medical associate segments generated over $311 million in HPS and MedAssets contracts. One of the key areas of focus this year was capital purchases. HPS and MedAssets brought tremendous value to our members through the Capital Group Buy Program. MedAssets has the infrastructure to obtain valuable and timely data for our member’s capital purchases, which enables the contracting team to negotiate market leading savings for our membership. In 2013, our members had 64 capital purchases in this program totaling over $5 million with hundreds of thousands in savings. Additionally, HPS Contracting staff, along with our Technical Advisory Committee, has been very busy developing contracts that will help our membership as the industry prepares for the rollout of the Affordable Care Act. A few of the new contracts that will be offered to our membership include contracts for electronic invoice delivery, inventory services, consulting in the area of population health, refurbished medical equipment, and a contract that gives our members a source for telemedicine/telehealth. HPS understands that these are challenging times for this segment. With the purchasing power of our national partner MedAssets, coupled with the regional contracting and the service we provide to our members, HPS continues to be positioned well to take this journey with our members.

I have participated in the advisory committees with HPS for nearly 30 years and this process demonstrates the true meaning of member operated. By being part of the committee, members provide input and make decisions on the HPS contracts and programs. At the committee meetings you are able to hear firsthand what is happening with the contracts. This greatly assists me in staying on top of the actions I need to take for my facility to ensure we are accessing contract pricing. I would recommend that every member serve on an advisory committee should the opportunity present itself.” —Karen Anklam, Materials Management Director/HPS Techical Advisory Committee Chairperson Scheurer Hospital, Pigeon, Michigan

In fiscal year 2013, HPS experienced solid top-line contract growth in the senior living segment, fueled by our growing membership and significant growth in the pharmacy category. HPS will continue to work with our members and committee members to bring solutions to this segment. In the education segment, HPS successfully completed its first year in a new service line as a USDA Foods Commodity Administrator. The year went extremely well and HPS feels it is now poised to grow this business as opportunities become available. This new service line allows our members to align their commodity and commercial purchases under one umbrella, improving efficiency while removing unnecessary cost from the supply chain. In addition, HPS achieved tremendous top-line contract growth in both the education and associate segments. Led CONTRACT VOLUME BY MEMBER CLASSIFICATION primarily by our emerging markets, this segment continues to benefit greatly from the HPS services and continues to grow. In 2013, HPS had 43 new contract starts and grew its regional contract volume by 6.2% over 2012 totals. HPS, along with its committees, developed 11 brand new contracts while 43 contracts in the portfolio were awarded to current contract holders. Contracts in their first revision generated over $2.6 million in members’ purchase volume.

FURNITURE, FINISHES AND EQUIPMENT The HPS Furniture, Finishes and Equipment program also experienced a huge success in 2013. Our customer service representatives provided more than 2,900 equipment sales quotes this fiscal year and achieved a 5% increase in utilization over the previous fiscal year. Fiscal year 2013 marked the launch of HPS’ newest publication, The Finish Line. This bi-monthly newsletter is dedicated solely to everything related to the HPS Furniture, Finishes and Equipment and Interior Design programs and has taken the place of quarterly sales fliers. The Finish Line features new product announcements, equipment deals, and design trends to help keep our members aware of program offerings. HPS’ new marketing efforts were represented with a slight increase in utilization in the senior living and education segments this fiscal year. The marketing efforts will continue, educating our members of all class of trades about the benefits of taking advantage of the FFE program. Great Lakes Food Service Equipment Specialists continue to be an asset to the FFE program. The partnership continues to result in many satisfied members and return business. Through the partnership, HPS offers exceptional pricing and knowledgeable equipment specialists lending their expertise from start to finish.

“Tracy from HPS researched, at my request, mattresses for the beds here at the facility. Our previous supplier raised their prices and Tracy came through for us with a much lower price with a new HPS supplier. Given the fact we need to order ten mattresses, this is quite the deal. She did this quickly and efficiently! This is a great savings for us and we thank her a lot for helping us out!” —Nona Reynolds, Office Manager/Dietary Manager at T.C. Harris School

DESIGN CENTER The HPS Design Center worked on 49 different projects for 38 member facilities in fiscal year 2013, which is an increase of 192% over fiscal year 2012.

INTERIOR DESIGN BILLINGS BY MEMBER CLASSIFICATION

In addition to the record-breaking totals of member interior design projects, the team has been busy seeing out HPS’ own corporate office renovation. The senior living segment of the HPS membership continues to be the largest patron of Design Center services, though all other segments represented growth in fiscal year 2013.

“Being an HPS board member for over 30 years helped make utilizing the HPS Design Center a smart decision. HPS understands the health care environment and the type of durability and quality in furniture that we are looking for. Everything they specified for us turned out nicely. The HPS Design Center not only did an excellent job, but their quote for services came in less costly than other quotes.” —George Montgomery, President and CEO of Schoolcraft Memorial Hospital and longstanding HPS Board of Managers Member “Working with Laura and the HPS Design Center was a great experience. We were given variety to choose from, and Laura was great on follow-up. Things arrived in a timely manner, and I couldn’t be happier. She treated us like we were her most important client and this meant a lot to us. She really went above and beyond to meet our needs.” —Liz Boeve, Director of Operations at Spring Lake Public Schools

CORPORATE COMMUNICATIONS Fiscal year 2013 marked the launch of HPS’ newest publication, The Finsh Line. This bi-monthly newsletter is dedicated solely to everything related to the HPS Furniture, Finishes and Equipment and Interior Design programs, has taken the place of quarterly sales fliers. The Finish Line features new product announcements, equipment deals, and design trends to help keep our members aware of program offerings. In addition to the new publication, all HPS electronic newsletters received an enhanced layout which features a new interactive version, allowing the reader to virtually turn each page by clicking and dragging it across the screen. Alternatively, a link to view the PDF version of each newsletter is also included in the e-mail message. Current and past newsletters are available in both formats on the HPS website under Current Publications. For many years the Corporate Communications team has worked to make improvements to the annual HPS conference and trade show. Thanks to the feedback HPS has received from the member and vendor communities, there are two big changes that have been made to the way HPS will host the annual event. To meet the needs of our growing membership footprint, the HPS event has become a “traveling” trade show and will take place in a different territory each year. For the first time in 32 years, the HPS Annual Conference and Trade Show will move from Lansing, Michigan. The 2013 event will take place at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum in Fort Wayne, Indiana on November 6th. Thanks to the generous support of the HPS trade show vendor exhibitors, HPS is very pleased to announce that there will no longer be a charge to members attending the annual show. This is an exciting first for HPS and we strongly feel that attending the annual conference deserves to be another value included in the cost of membership. HPS continues to be active in the local communities of our employees and members. We are proud of the dedicated commitment of our staff who volunteer their time and energy, giving support to a variety of organizations including: • • • • • • •

“Our cooperative made the decision to join HPS this past year. Our school districts have saved between 6 – 15% on their food costs. As we were in the process of making the decision, HPS met with us as a group two times and then at each school district when requested. KVEC appreciates the time and effort the HPS staff provided as we made our decision to join the HPS membership.” —Jeff Hawkins, Executive Director at Kentucky Valley Educational Cooperative

“Our facility went through the RFP process for a new pharmacy company this past year. The award was granted to the HPS contract with In Touch Pharmacy. Not only did this change provide us with savings, In Touch Pharmacy and HPS have provided a new level of service to our community. Customer service is intangible without a monetary value, but service must be part of the equation. Both In Touch and HPS, have customer service as part of their expectation and go above and beyond when working with members.” —Ben Long, Purchasing Coordinator at Burcham Hills Retirement Community
