Dear Polk County Stakeholders, Exciting things are happening in Polk School District. Innovative teaching strategies are transforming the way our students learn. Students are no longer tethered to a classroom or library for learning. Their learning content is not confined or limited to a required textbook. Today’s generation has never known a world without mobile devices connected to each other and the world. Research tells us that established teaching styles are not as effective with this tech savvy generation. We believe that a traditional standards based curriculum is absolutely necessary, but that is where tradition ends. The iPad inspires creativity and hands on learning. Creating, sharing, and mastering educational content centered on curriculum standards are made possible with the use of the iPad. To live successfully in this world, students must be able to communicate, explore, and learn. Polk School District is transforming by moving from traditions of the past to accommodating the needs of our 21st century learners. We appreciate your continued support of our teachers, students, and support staff. We look forward to many successes as Polk School District transforms learning. Sincerely,
 Dr. William A. Hunter

Cherokee Elementary Engaging the Mobile Mind using Online Classroom Teachers at Cherokee Elementary are using their Online Classrooms to extend learning beyond the walls of the school. Students have the ability to access their teacher’s website at home, on the bus, or anywhere that WiFi is available. This makes instruction possible at anytime. It also provides students with the opportunity for additional support while completing assignments or studying for tests. Tutorials have been created and linked to OLCs to ensure students know the process involved in solving problems, decoding words, and implementing comprehension strategies, such as UNRAAVEL. Classworks’ lessons have been linked to many OLCs so that students can practice various skills that correlate with the CCGPS. Additionally, teachers are posting assignments, graphic organizers, study guides, and links to helpful websites to ensure students are fully prepared to succeed in at the 21st Century Classroom.

Mrs. Huey explains how students can link to Classworks for extra practice using a Tellagami video.

Mrs. Redden includes a Popplet created in class on her OLC for students to study as needed.

Class Flow at Van Wert Elementary Directed Studies has taken Van Wert Elementary by storm. The Directed Studies classroom experience at Van Wert includes utilizing iPads and classroom computers to provide students with differentiated instruction to remediate as needed and also further challenge students who have mastered the concepts. Mrs. Sisneros, Directed Studies teacher, uses Class Flow to teach students new math concepts. This interactive and engaging program is helping students to succeed at Van Wert Elementary. Recently our state superintendent, Dr. John Barge, visited Van Wert and was highly impressed with the interactive technology and engaging lessons going on in the classroom. Van Wert is truly on the move.

CMS is on the Move with Integrating Technology CMS is on the move with integrating technology to enhance the quality, level of engagement, and level of rigor in all of our 6-8 classrooms this school year! Teachers are working collaboratively together to share “best practices” of the current technologies available to enhance classroom instruction. Below are two of our most successful approaches this school year so far! • Kahoot.it – Many teachers are capitalizing on the high level of engagement with Kahoot It as a means of blended learning tool. Students compete against each other to demonstrate understanding of course content through mobile devices such as their iPhones, iPads and computers. It is fascinating to walk into a classroom and see students quickly entering their responses into this game-based quizzing platform to demonstrate their understanding! • Aurasma -- Aurasma is one of teachers’ and students’ favorite apps as it allows for connectivity through technology. Students create “triggers” to launch from content on their papers to hyperlinks to further reading online, to reveal answers to review questions, and to explore connected concepts related to their current material. It is a great tool with endless possibilities. These two examples are just a few of many successful and engaging technology features at Cedartown Middle this school year. We are off to a great start with instruction and students are impressing students with their levels of engagement and depth of learning. We look forward to build upon this initial success at this school year continues to develop!

Eastside Elementary Remembers September 11th Students in Mrs. Cristi Gober’s PEP class at Eastside Elementary spent time learning about the events of September 11, 2001. After beginning a K-W-L chart, they watched real news broadcasts about the events of that morning. The students used iPads to watch the Brain Pop video about 9/11 to gather more facts. After a discussion, they finished the K-W-L chart and created artwork of their choice to represent 9/11. Using Aurasma, the students recorded videos summarizing the events and connected them to their individual artwork. The projects are displayed in the hall where students can scan the Auras and listen to the presentations.

Students use Aurasma to watch videos created by their classmates

Exploring the World at Westside iPads are being used in creative ways at Westside Elementary. Students are using the iPads to research topics they are discussing in class and interactive notebooks to record the information gained through technology. The iPads offer the world at the students’ fingertips by allowing them to use interactive apps and websites to help them gain better understanding of what they’re learning in class. Westside students enjoy using the iPads and learning in an engaging and interactive atmosphere.

Students at Westside work in pairs to create a magazine article about stars.

Learning through Lyrics at Youngs Grove Have you ever listened to the radio and heard a song you haven’t heard in a long time? Chances are you were able to recall every word of the song like you had heard it only yesterday. At Youngs Grove Elementary, we have created Youngs Grove Morning Mix and Youngs Grove Lunch and Lyrics. Morning Mix and Lunch and Lyrics are videos that are played on the big screen in the cafeteria during breakfast and lunch. The videos are educational based, but in song form. We find out what topics teachers are working on in class, find song videos relevant to that topic, and compile them into an iMovie. The purpose of Morning Mix and Lunch and Lyrics is to reinforce the topics being taught in the classroom by getting the lyrics in the students’ heads. We want them to be able to recall the song lyrics and, in turn, recall the information they have learned in class. The students enjoy “grooving” to the educational tunes at “The Grove.”

Lyrical Lunch at Youngs Grove

MyOn in the Middle School Classroom At RMS we use MyOn in a variety of ways in the classroom. MyOn helps guide instruction by introducing a topic to the class and is beneficial for students to use to find books that provide additional information on topics discussed in class. MyOn books can also be used as a way to review topics/standards and remediation for retest. MyOn is used as a tool when we are doing research. Our language arts classes use the Lexile scores from the tests they take on MyOn to help differentiate lesson plans to accommodate students in order to ensure they are reading material on the appropriate level. It is a great tool to use for independent reading.

Northside Elementary Directed Studies As Dr. Seuss once said, “A person’s a person, no matter how small”. This is our Directed Studies’ motto. We want students to feel they are important. We also want to engage and encourage students in learning with specialized instruction. We offer opportunities for students to learn with manipulatives and technology. Directed Studies is a place for students to learn in a safe and friendly environment. Our classes consist of small, differentiated groups. These groups focus on each student’s skills, accomplishments, and goals. Directed Studies is on the move!

Technology Integration at Cedartown High School At Cedartown High School, teachers are integrating technology into classroom instruction in a variety of ways, transforming both teaching and learning. Aurasma and Tellagami are used used to introduce Standards and EQs. Standards-based topics are explored with Instagrok, and concepts are mapped with Popplet and Inspiration. Students use Pages and Keynote to create, collaborate, and present ideas and projects. Cedartown serves a unique population of students that require ESOL services. Technology has proven to be a valuable tool in helping these students connect and participate in classroom instruction with Accessibility and International features. Socrative assessment has assisted teachers in evaluation and differentiation of instruction. Technology applications have helped teachers create innovative and engaging lessons that foster student excitement for learning and success!

Students at CHS use Aurasma to learn more about their content.
