Undoubtedly, we can say that the city of Berat is a treasure of our traditional architecture. Like a treasure deserves to be monitored and preserved, the city of Berat calls for special attention. Without the past, there can be no future. Consequently, the architecture of our country should feature all the stages through which it has passed. The inspiration for this project was the city of Berat and the concept began precisely with this city in mind. The intervention consisted in of the creation of objects with reduced dimensions which will have hotel room functions but that will resemble individual homes. The houses were conceptualized as using the main elements that characterize a traditional Berat house’s. Some of these elements are: quadratic forms, wooden windows, tiled roof, porch and chimney. By joining these elements, the new modules were formed, representing the heart of the home in Be| 254
rat. In order to preserve the form of a square, and roofs, a 45° rotation of the building was carried out. This intervention served as a contrast to the traditional architecture, as a new and interesting perspective. These modules were inspired by the traditional architecture of Berat. To create a variety of hotel rooms, several modules with different specifications were created. Family rooms, suites, and collective rooms were some of the proposed modules. These modules were designed as independent, creating a greater freedom for the hotel’s visitors and connected by joint facilities. The facilities created on the island will serve the hotel and its visitors. New functions will also be implemented in the island in order to better serve the city of Berat. The final product of this thesis seeks to boost the growth of tourism in the city of Berat, thus creating new jobs and influencing its growth.
