The context of analysis: The area next to the shelter of via Sammartini • The shelter near central station

• Who manages it • Its current function • The current relationship with the neighbourhood

THE OPPORTUNITY: enlarging the activities of the shelter during the day, starting from the new space available

PwC

2

Scope of the project •

Support the guests in their rehabilitation, looking for (new) activities to carry out during the day time. No more time

wasted, but invested. •

Attempt to create a partnership between the citizens and the hosts. The former can exploit people in the shelter as aid in some activities, while the latter has the opportunity to be reintroduced in the society at 360°.

Change the meaning previously associated to the shelter, removing negative prejudices and showing it as an helpful structure for everybody. PwC

3

Users’ needs Who: Hosts and citizens Tools : Questionnaires and Interviews

Results: From the guests : • strong willingness to work and learn • desire of living in a stable and autonomous situation (earn money) • desire of creating something that can be touched • need of socialization PwC

From the citizens: • need related to the requalification of the neighborhood near Magazzini Raccordati • more personal needs, related to daily activities characterizing the internal environment 4

1st step: rearrangement of the space SocialHub

SpeakingHub

• Creative workshops (photography, painting, ..)

Auditorium where to organize:

• Library, provided with books, magazines and computers • Writing activities • Job research

• Cineforum

• Cultural events (meetings with schools, sharing of experiences,..)

• CV review (volunteers’ assistance)

PwC

9

2nd step: reinforcement of professional courses “This is the best opportunity we have to give them a second chance” Luca Valisi

Some examples of courses we identified are: • Socio Sanitary Operator • Federlegno • IT technicians

PwC

10

3rd step: requalification of the district The hosts of the shelter can be exploited to provide services to the community living in the neighborhood. The guests could contribute to this purpose accomplishing some tasks, like cleaning graffiti, painting, gardening of public area or fixing broken structures. The relationship between citizens and hosts is enforced. PwC

11

3rd step(cont.): private services for citizens Once reached a minimum level of trust between the two parts, this service could be applied also to satisfy personal needs of citizens offering private services: they can check every day the availability for a specific task, both on a website designed for the service or calling with a phone. The guests are paid for the job done.

PwC

12

To sum up... The components of our solution

1 Rearrangement of the warehouse’s space, with organization of creative workshops

2

3a Employment of the hosts during the day to renovate the area

Reinforcement of professional courses for the hosts

3b Development of a website to offer private services to citizens PwC

13

Change of the meaning

From

PwC

To

• Support for basic needs

• Support for wider range of needs

• Shelter as external entity

• Shelter as part of the district

• Helped people

• Helping people

14

Feasibility To check it we took into account the costs peculiar of our solution. These are: We calculated the revenues estimating the total amount of hours per month worked and we found that the investment will be covered in 2.6 years.

It’s important to notice that in any case Farsi Prossimo depends by Caritas funding, our aim is not to cover all the running costs of the new centre.

Leveraging people We recognize the homeless are the resource and partners. Unlike almost every existing charity app.

Long term connection If events are conducted only once, is not sustainable. People will be kept in touch.

Both for a yearlong cinema club and for showing football games. Everyone is invited, we believe that watching together a football match can really bring closer people, especially in Italy.

“A wonderful idea, that surely necessitates of a cost analysis. This would be extremely effective in luring to the structure the people of the district…..Totally feasible and fun.”

Luca Valisi reasons for approval “I always had mixed feeling about those kind of activities, we must NOT allow that homeless with an academic background are just seen as garbage men. You must focus on solutions that leverage the exceptional background of our selected users. 17

Idea description ASA courses, OSS courses (as requested from the very homeless). The innovation stays in opening this courses even for paying outsiders (district inhabitants), that can register in app.

Telematics courses

Luca Valisi reasons for approval “Yes, absolutely. The real challenge here is to find someone willing to offer these courses for free…[we explain the “paying outsider” variance] …this is very interesting, we could surely host that if it generates enough momentum.”

19

How to balance the app events offer? A little extract of our dual WHO analysis

A dive into the shelter: Bruntouchables survey

A walk into the district: the shared teams survey

A fraction deliver curriculum vitae to find a job, attend ASA course, do internships in bars, volunteer in a hospital or simply go to libraries to read books. Thanks to these information we were and will be able to propose activities that are for sure already appreciated by some users, like ASA courses or CV writing courses.

Very interesting results emerged, even if the pool (146) is surely not random and unbiased, especially related to the requalification of the district and the perception of the shelter. Willingness to participate to the Caritas events for example is extremely important for our project.

AGENDA

1

ANALYSIS

2

SOLUTION

3

TEAM ORGANIZATION

ANALYSIS

ACTUAL SITUATION

Magazzini Raccordati are two rows of warehouses situated just behind the Central Station of Milan

They are 138 warehouses of about 300 square meters each, accessible from both Via Ferrante Aporti and Via Sammartini, for a total length of more than 2,5 km

Our objective is to help FAS to give back urban and cultural dignity to Magazzini Raccordati and to the whole neighbourhoods

TREND ANALYSIS

1. Sustainable Energy Production

• The production of electric energy using renewable sources has become crucial in recent years • Continuing drop in cost, increase of demand and increase of production • In less than 50 years solar panels will provide most of our power

2. Sharing Economy

• It is a socio-economic ecosystem built around the sharing of resources • Most successful Companies: Airbnb, Uber, Couchsurfing • Economy have the potential to increase its global revenues from roughly $15 billion today to around $335 billion by 2025

TREND ANALYSIS

3. Globalization and Integration

• Italy is becoming a multicultural and multi religious country • Legal immigrants in Italy are more than 7% of the population • This phenomenon is not temporary and it will increase in the future

4. Active Citizenship

• It means people getting involved in their local communities and democracy at all levels • Active citizenship is one of the most important steps towards healthy societies • Tactics and strategies for increased citizen participation in local governance can be seen around the globe

EXISTING SOLUTION

We analyzed three solutions applied around the world and we selected them using two drivers: I) Solution that have been proposed by no profit associations II) Renewal of an already existing facility Yppenplatz und Markt in Vienna

Kulturbrauerei in Berlin

High Line in New York

STAKEHOLDERS’ ANALYSIS

First we identified the Stakeholders of the solution: 1. Citizens in the Neighbourhood 2. Citizens in Milan 3. Citizens out of Milan 4. Students 5. Ownership of Magazzini Raccordati (Grandi Stazioni), Associations (FAS) and Stores After that, in order to reduce uncertainty and to work on real data, we tried to involve as much as possible, the main stakeholders in the idea generation process

We developed 3 different surveys

USERS’ ANALYSIS

1. Neighbours’ Survey

• Developed jointly with other groups and FAS Association • Including questions about personal characteristics, feedbacks and other proposals • Important to understand immediate needs of the most involved stakeholders

2. Citizens’ Survey

• This survey let us to understand needs and desires of a wider customer segment • We split the questionnaire in two sections, to compare the results, and we found out comparable results

3. Students’ Survey

• We interviewed students of the schools near Central Station • We asked them about their habits, and about their interest in meeting points (e.g. library, study room and pubs) in the Magazzini Raccordati

COMMENTS We also analysed the results considering them as a whole and some shared results emerged:

1. The large majority would appreciate a bike path 2. Both the neighbours and the citizens perceive the area as not safe 3. Many of the interviewed would appreciate the use of solar panels

4. A lot of people asked for cultural events 5. We found out a quite high willingness to join no profit associations as volunteers 6. We had many proposals for new commercial activities 7. We collected many different ideas to improve the area, so we are sure that the commitment of the citizens will be high
