RAW : A :WAR

11

It is an emotional war we tend to fight with ourselves and society. It is war that is conducted through refinement, that processes our rawness. It is a war that shatters our identity into myriad facets. What is this war? It is the battle between our raw self and our cultural self. Without boundaries or rules, raw is an instinct, a visceral gut feeling. Raw is authenticity, fire, passion, our real self. It is blood pounding in our veins, making our pulse race. It is letting the bright voice of innocence within us scream out loud that we are alive. Raw is all we can be when we are alone with ourselves; we don’t lie to ourselves; we know about our imperfections and shortfalls; we know what we feel. We know our darkest and brightest secrets. Sadly we silence our rawness in order to belong. We let societal norms dull our senses and dictate who we are, when in fact rawness exists to make us overcome our limitations. Raw is the motor that keeps us going and encourages us to (re)invent ourselves time and again. For centuries we have allowed restrictions and limitations to conquer our raw nature and seen raw as uncontrollable savagery. We have feared that the unrestrained self would lead to errors and distortions when errors are in fact a source for innovations and progress. We have caged our raw persona as if it were a wild beast, policed and sanitized ourselves and fallen into a vicious cycle of hygiene; hygiene of our bodies, minds and souls. Today the anonymity of virtual realities gives our raw self some freedom. We can explore the boundless virtual space in search for the limits of raw, in search for a place where the raw can act and react on impulse with no regrets and no excuses. Still, this raw exists only virtually and its release is intangible, it is a smoke screen, a dream that never happened. But the intangibility of the virtual world creates a craving for new ways of experiencing the raw. We crave the imagined good old days, our arcadia: we want to relive our childhood, find warmth and security once again. We need to return to a tactile reality where we can reconnect to nature and our primal instincts in order to understand the very basics of our world. We need the tangibility of objects, the totems that carry the energy of our memories in real space. We need to slow down and distance ourselves from a world driven by efficiency that leaves us no time to mature at a natural pace. We need physical spaces that are private and sheltering, spaces where the only things that matter are us and the people we love and respect, spaces that allow us to enjoy our surroundings, let the raw free.

Untitled-1 1

It is of course impossible to return to a pre-refined, pre-industrialized world where the raw was reigning free. We can, however, create spaces and environments that nurture the raw within us. We can construct landscapes and architecture that feed our hunger for physicality, and design technology that does not interfere with our raw nature. We already have word processing programs that allow the writer to block out distractions and stimuli to concentrate on the task at hand. Similarly, our future homes will be equipped with devices that can sense the owner’s sensory and emotional overload and shut down all but the basics. A home where textures, colors, smells and sounds soothe and calm us and protect the raw within. A home that is not simply raw, but possesses a form of bespoke rawness which allows our individuality to thrive. The future will belong to the raw self once again, a self that is sustainable, balanced and energized.

cycle produced by excessive processed feeding is hard to break yet it is not impossible. We need to return to a more natural, slower pace. Bodily and mental feedings have transitioned from survival to a d d i c t i o n ; they are now mere fashionable mechanisms. Just like the body, the mind needs a diet: balance rather than suppression. We need to awaken our unconscious bad habits and focus on the advantages of feeding. We are blinded by our delusional hunger leading to an unbalanced i n t a k e of processed and unprocessed FOOD. Unprocessed feeding deals with new emotions and cravings. FEEDING HAS BECOME HAZARDOUS. ONCE A NATURAL PHENOMENON INTENDED TO KEEP US ALIVE, IT IS NOW IMPAIRING OUR LIVES. AS THE EVER-INCREASING SWINGS OF A PENDULUM, THE FREQUENCY OF OUR FEEDINGS IS ESCALATING AN UNCONTROLLABLE SPEED. WE NEED TO RETURN TO A MORE NATURAL, SLOWER PACE. 22 PROCESSED FEEDERS What we feed on impacts who and what we are. Physical and mental food is meant to keep us alive; yet, feeding has become a disorder that consumes us. Overfeeding is now a social disease: we constantly binge on food and information. The enrichment of the mind has overcome the importance of bodily nourishment. And still, food for the mind can alter our bodies as much as physical eating: it creates obesity and health problems and can have all manners of adverse effects on our bodily appearance and mental health. Our culture nourishes excesses and now the fast accessibility of food increases our tendency to binge. The intoxicating flux of daily feeds can be either enriching or consuming: the choice is ours to make. So, why are we overfeeding the way we are? And, most important, what are going to be our future feeding habits? Feeding compulsions are driven by pleasure seeking: we search for happiness through excessive consumption of physical and mental food. We are all bulimic but our addictions come in different types: processed and unprocessed. Processed feeders are consumers of material things. This phenomenon has always existed but it has now acquired unprecedented proportions.

24 Processed feeding is a mix of natural cravings and social brainwashing. It is a physical disorder, a vicious feeding cycle. It is hard to break away from this condition, yet it is not impossible. Processed feeders come in different species.

OBSESSIVE FEEDERS: Consuming well past their daily necessities, obsessive feeders are ready to buy anything for the sake of consuming or owning.

04/11/2013 17:38

25 AESTHETIC FEEDERS: Aesthetic feeders increase their perceived self-value through objects that are socially appealing. Craving validation from others, they unnaturally reshape their own image according to the latest trends.

Untitled-1 1

SUBSTANCE FEEDERS: Substance feeders seek escape. Through an intake of natural and chemical substances, they try to enhance the experience of life. They survive on temporary bliss.

26 UNPROCESSED FEEDERS Unprocessed feeders are consumers of immaterial things. Mental raw feeders are guzzling info: they uncritically allow the flow of feeds to enter their minds. They have an insatiable hunger for gossip, news, gaming, knowledge, images, trends... But intangible overfeeding can alter our mental balance. Unprocessed feeding is a raw way of living and thinking in excess. The mind gets intoxicated with a surplus of useful and useless information. Anything goes as long as it is updated; but this clump of undigested food slowly spills into the social sphere until it hinders the feeder’s functioning. Today, mental thirst is the main course of our lifestyle: an inescapable pleasure with no restrictions. It is something new, and we have yet to make sense of it: it is simply raw. We have freed our daily routines from the necessity of procuring physical nourishment, our existence is no longer in danger of starvation: we have excessive free time and we fill it with unprocessed feeding. We no longer need the shelter of social congregation for survival; we live alone and fulfill our thirst for social connection through excessive feeding. The need becomes uncontrollable, changes our feeding habits and reshapes our social structure. The repercussions of this shift in feeding practices have already appeared in various groups: BRAIN FEEDERS: Consuming and consumed by the intangible, they crave ideas, information and an escape from boredom. ADRENALINE FEEDERS: Sucked into parallel realms, adrenaline feeders are drowning in the unreal. They live in the virtual world of gaming and gambling, of bit-coins and virtual wealth. #FEEDERS: #binging #virtual #social #interaction

30 Unprocessed feeding stems from emotional cravings. It is raw. Its secondary effects have just started shifting behavioral and biological patterns. We are stuck in our own bubbles of comfort that create an intoxicating feeling, both fulfilling and destroying us, according to our individual level of control. Concrete and abstract feeding has been perverted; it no longer sustains us but puts us in danger. We are blinded by our delusional hunger that leads us to an unbalanced intake of processed and unprocessed food. We are falling into patterns of eating disorders. To re-optimize the benefits of feedings, we turn to trends of detox and slow food. As these trends gain momentum with processed feeders, they will filter into the unprocessed. Our society is heading towards a trend of slow food for the brain. A process of mind rehab will help us control addictions triggered by unhealthy urges. In order to curb overfeeding, we are ready to pay for virtual relief. Ommwriter Š and Freedom Š are the apps paving the way. In the near future, companies will create neutral and peaceful environments for mind detox where former addicts can cleanse their systems from mental and physical substance abuse. Institutions will program diets counting calories of food for the mind. Just like the body, the mind needs a diet: balance rather than suppression is the recipe for cure. We need to awaken to the dangers of our unconscious bad habits and focus on healthy feeding. We will come to embrace slow feeding to promote the wellbeing of our bodies and minds.

44 Is taboo an organic human restraint of sharing the most intimate habits and desires or a censure, a social reproach to doing so?

Taboo is my personal silence. It’s what I don’t want people to know about me. It’s the thoughts that remain unrevealed. It’s the shame pushed into the shadow. It’s what I’m supposed to name here but I won’t, because I’m afraid someone could recognize me.

Taboo is a shadow of untold thoughts we carry along our way. A taboo is everything I’m not doing or saying because it would embarrass me or make me, my surrounding and society uncomfortable.

Shit is taboo. Physical contact with strangers is taboo. What is considered private becomes taboo when made public. Having sex in public is taboo. Taboo makes us embarrassed and ashamed.

Something that I would never dare to do in any condition, at any time in my life is taboo to me. Mostly these are choices that I end up choosing mostly because of the ways in which I was brought up and I willingly choose to follow them now. Taboo is having dirty thoughts in inappropriate occasions. Words coming out of a person impulsively without registering first are a taboo. Taboo is imposed upon us, to make us feel ashamed of our body and thoughts, and by that make us feel inferior and less worthy. Ancient Mass manipulation techniques that still follow us today. There’s nothing that limits and weakens a human soul like the feeling of guilt and unworthiness.

Taboo is something that I am not used to. It is something against my personal norm, and mostly it comes from my cultural norm. I don’t always see taboo as something negative, it’s just different.

04/11/2013 17:38

45 Taboo is sacred and can be sacrilegious. Because of taboos we tend to think twice before doing. Taboo for me, not for you. What I see as a taboo, doesn’t have to be equal for others. Taboo is acceptable in the avant garde, not in the conservative. Depending on the attitude towards taboos, they can be liberating but also cause a feeling of slavery. Taboo is an addiction. Addiction is a taboo. Taboo mutates.

Taboos… who had the idea to mark my actions and label them as too filthy? Tabooing an action is making someone feel ashamed when they think of or do that action. It is gaining power over them psychologically anytime they cross path with that specific action. Now if you taboo a basic fundamental action like body functions and urges, you create a community of weak and ashamed individuals. This looks like a good way to control masses. Having sex with many people is taboo. Watching others having sex is taboo. There are many taboos connected to the sphere of our sexuality. It’s like a strictly defended zone, which noone can invade without social consequences. It’s culturally banned. Taboo makes us embarrassed and ashamed. Something that I would never dare to do in any condition, at any time in my life is taboo to me. But taboos change. They evolve and their position among social norms evolve.

ever.

46

Taboo is an activity that is prohibited, banned or restricted to particular categories of people. Taboo is a topic too sensitive to be openly discussed. It is immensely difficult to describe exactly what taboo is since the concept differs from culture to culture, society to society or even person to person. Looking closely at taboos, we can see that they mainly revolve around bodily functions and urges. Freud defines taboos as related to conditions and practices either too sacred or dangerously filthy to be shared by the community, such as, for example, activities regarding the disposal of dead bodies. Taboos could be explained as actions that are set apart from common daily activities. In tribal communities taboos are related to the disruption of primary survival functions, such as kinship killing (represented by totem animals) or incest. Taboos are thus not simply created to forbid certain practices, but meant to maximize the community’s potential for survival. Taboos are the unwritten laws of a moral system, which pre-exist local and national legislation. And although the existence of a moral system was (and still is) a universal necessity, its content varies according to historical, geographical and cultural parameters. Due to their cultural complexity, taboos cannot be thought of as a fixed set of behavioural rules, but mostly as a marginal space to which certain actions, or even thoughts, need to be confined. This marginal space is created primarily in (and for) society: taboos take root in our unconscious and ultimately shape our personal moral code. As in any written page, text should be kept within the margins. Taboos are the unrefined version of our moral code, confined to the silence of social margins; they are legible, yet too raw to be uttered. Taboo is the unspeakable, the silence between the edge of the text and the edge of the page. But is it really silence? Handwritten comments in the margins of medieval texts (marginalia) bear an analogy to the function of taboos: not meant for public use, they reveal the reader’s raw thoughts regarding the text. Similarly, taboos are the raw text in the margins: they are not usually apparent but, if deciphered, they can provide precious insight on society and culture.

The term “tabooâ€? was introduced in the English language in the 18th century, during the Enlightenment. The progressive secularization of early modern societies needed a word to signal social proscriptions previously embedded in divine and religious constraints. The God of Rationality and Reason came to replace the Almighty God of Infallibility. A new set of commandments and prohibitions were created for the new societies of states and governments. This new set of taboos was a code of certainties: actions were no longer prohibited on the base of religious belief but scientific facts. Everything that could degenerate human DNA and therefore imperil our chances of survival as a species was banned, once again, to social margins. Still, our taboos (such as paedophilia, incest, cannibalism, necrophilia, bestiality‌) are hard to eliminate from the margins. We live now in a moment of great incertitude and we are losing trust in God and State. We are losing faith in the very system we have established. And, with the loss of a higher authority, the fear of punishment is lost as well. Who decides what is punishable and who establishes the constraints necessary for society to survive? Many indications point towards the Gods of Technology. Operating systems and data gathering platforms are constantly collecting information and sharing it with governments and corporations. In the future, even our pizza vendor will have access to our health records and spending habits. How are we going to be affected by this virtual omniscience and what new rules will ensure our survival? Will we need to hide information from Google Almighty? In a world where all our data is accessible, will it be against social rules to maintain a modicum of confidentiality when it comes to our most intimate sphere? Will personal privacy be the next taboo?

The century Definitely belongs to The city. according to The world health Organization, by the year 2030 six out of every Ten people will live in A city, and by 2050 they Will be seven out of Ten. by that time, cities Will have changed their Nature dramatically. in Twenty years, an urban Space characterized by Homogenous physical and Social environments will be Far beyond anachronistic. Our society is organized by nodes and points of connections rather than by physical space. We live in fluid overlapping communities that constantly expand far beyond their geographical markers. People take on different roles, often in cities which are not their own: they live in more than one place, work in several different locations and pay taxes in yet another area. This leads to a sort of chameleonic citizenship: we belong to different countries and have multiple allegiances. City dwellers who develop such multifaceted identity also create their infrastructures based on new technology and informal networks. As a result, we have all become citizens of “placeless places and cohabit with people who aren’t our compatriots but share with us much more than national roots: they take paths similar to ours and undergo analogous experiences. During this process, the city completely changes its nature: the center is

decentralized and in constant flux. The urban fabric is constantly changed and reconfigured according to real and virtual events and at unprecedented pace. Traditionally demarcated borders are no longer relevant and architectures appear inadequate for people’s new needs and lifestyles. City dwellers and their mutual connectivity have developed far beyond the capacity of physical infrastructures.

Because of this ever increasing, ever speeding digital socialization, private (collective) initiatives have acquired greater importance: in no time, crowds can convene at a given spot; anyone can be connected to anyone else anywhere at any given time. The growing deterritorialized human interfacing already resembles our intricate neurological system and, as in any organic process, the neurological system dictates the city’s geographic morphing and organic restructuring.

We will soon face the consequences of this huge wave of urban change: notions such as ‘home’, ‘neighborhood’ or ‘abroad’ will be completely redefined. How often do we feel a close connection to someone or some place that is physically far away? How much do we actually know about the people living next door? Living in a place no longer means building a social life in that location. As a matter of fact, more and more of us lead their lives in an invisible “cloud”, a metropolis that, geographically, may encompass the whole world. Mobile, long distance relations have bigger and bigger impact on our lives, often beyond our awareness.

the intangible ones while digital media, social networks and cloud storage add further overlays, all constantly floating and exchanging data.

Contemporary urban topography is organized in multiple planes, layered by different realities: the megalopolis develops on the ground, above ground and – nowadays – a good deal underground. To cite but two examples: Istanbul just connected its Asian and European sides by an underwater rail tunnel and an underground park is being built on a former metro line in Williamsburg. The city’s physical layers coexist with

62

Along with this momentous redefinition of the urban space comes a change in the notion of ‘privacy’. With the development of the “Internet of Things” (a world of interconnected physical hardware capable of sharing data without human intervention), a growing amount of information about our private matters will be accessible on the World Wide Web. The traditional ideas of safekeeping and privacy will disappear. As there isn’t really a way to stop this process, we will embrace the new reality and find privacy elsewhere, most likely beyond digital communication, in “raw” personal conditions. Predictably, we will become more introverted and focused inward. As a result, the only space for privacy will be the space of the mind. We now know that digital networking doesn’t actually cause de-socialization: there still is a place for face-to-face relationships that are yet considered more authentic. In the future, we might paradoxically find a way to share the most personal, raw aspects of our neuro-digital lives very close to the ground.

If words could be measured in actual weight, belief would be one of the heaviest. Belief is a vehicle of personal truth and therefore impossible to define collectively. For some of us, belief is established and very clear; for others, it can be malleable or even nebulous. Belief is universal and is often what gives people a reason to live. It is a necessary element of survival for humankind.

74

Belief can be collective and personal at once. We are born into sets of beliefs shared by our social groups, but ultimately the decision to subscribe or not to them is entirely up to us. Belief is hinged on reality as we know it. It is our perception that shapes our notion of reality and truth: if we don’t believe in something, then it won’t be real for us. We all have beliefs of some sort: even when someone claims to believe in nothing, that itself is a belief. Belief is a combination of ethics and faith; it is our way to understand and rationalize our choices, desires and downfalls. In the past, our belief systems stemmed from and were imposed by religious and secular institutions. Belief depended on geographic location, political and social circumstances. There was room for interpretation, but not questioning, for questioning begot doubt and change. New philosophies and cults were the outcome of questioned beliefs. In the contemporary world there is a widespread feeling that belief has outgrown religion. But what could be bigger than religion? We are living in a time when voiced opinions define a person. Usually what we write, record, re-post and share tells the world who we want to be: our ideal selves. But, through what we post,

04/11/2013 17:38

75

we give others the possibility to read between the lines and understand what our beliefs really are. In our technologically crazed world we suffer from an over-abundance of information, which arrives to us unprocessed and without filters. We are bombarded by a mish-mash of data at a speed we have never known in the past. We have access to everything and the opposite of everything. Information is so ubiquitous and excessive that it makes us confused. We are tossed about in a tempest of information without anything to grasp on. We don’t know what to believe.

Untitled-1 1

Living in a global city where boundaries are fading, our belief systems are disappearing as well. We are losing our confidence and direction because there is no institution or person to give us guidance. So we are self medicating with a new antidote against the harms of uncertainty: self-belief. We need to hold on to something so that we don’t feel out of control and there is only one thing that we can be sure of and that is completely reliable: ourselves. As the external world is failing us, we are entering an era of worship of the self. Our beliefs are focusing on our own self: they are internal, no longer imposed from the outside. Our thoughts, experiences and feelings have become our religion.

76 The only truth is the one that we experience; we know that we were born because we are alive. Our body is the ultimate proof of existence and tool for experience. The body is also the one thing that can be controlled through our mind: some of us believe that we can control it completely, regulate it and even cure its illness. Dominating our body makes us feel in control and gives us power. We are trying to maximize our body’s performance and be in control of our physiological functions in order to enhance our lifestyle and we are doing it through data. We are measuring our sleep, our steps, what we eat; we are measuring all our activities. Our lifestyles and behaviors are becoming elements of worship: we are becoming our own icons. Self-centered belief is becoming our new collective belief. We are becoming a society of individuals who firmly believe they are capable of achieving anything and everything if they put their minds to it. The only opinion that matters is our own: our every thought and action is focused onto ourselves. The new be[lief] is the [beloved] self.
