A

AHHH … MARCH. I COULD WAX POETIC ON HOW EXCITED I AM TO DIVE INTO typical spring activities that have been on hold for what seems like forever, but the truth is March means basketball brackets in my house. Perhaps my competitive nature is responsible, or maybe it’s simply the thrill of feeling like an integral part of a favorite team. I know I’m not the only one. I have a friend who once refused to leave a restroom because our team, which had been losing when she went in only minutes earlier, had mounted an impressive come-from-behind lead in a pivotal game. She politely explained to anyone who questioned her motives that once the team had secured a win, she would promptly vacate. As crazy as it sounds, they won and she certainly isn’t the only avid sports fan to fiercely abide by superstitions. As a matter of fact, come this time next month, more than a few of you reading this letter might find yourselves equally fired up as newfound fans of the Atlanta Blaze. The Major League Lacrosse team will take the field for its inaugural season soon, so we caught up with the players blazing this new trail not only for local fans but future supporters of the sport as well. Professional lax isn’t the only feature that might stick with you this month. Nearly a decade ago, KellyKakes created a memorable birthday cake for our associate editor. Since then, the bakery has evolved into Roswell Provisions and has been a part of countless celebrations. We’re also launching a quarterly series called Tried and True. Curious Northsiders will enjoy our excursions into neighborhoods that we typically don’t cover. What better time to revisit old favorites and discover new ones than with a little help from daylight savings? With more time to play outdoors, we know those pool covers will come off around the same time the flip-flops come on. In anticipation, we’re sharing some easy bites that taste as good as they look. In keeping with the madness of March, we are revamping our website and hope that with a little luck, the changes will spring us forward with much success. After all, a big win is always more fun than a busted bracket.

EXPLORING THE

BELTLINE BY

BITES & BIKES written by COLLEEN ANN MCNALLY Fan of Alpharetta’s The El Felix? You’ll love Superica at Krog Street Market.

IT’S A WEEKEND MORNING and the sunshine outside is overpowering your dedication to the typical to-do list around the house. You want a mini-escape — but something different — and you need to entertain the kids. Oh, and you can’t forget the dog. Then you remember the Atlanta BeltLine, that big

GOING FULL CIRCLE

greenway project you heard about in the news. But what and where is it, exactly? Save your sweating until you get on the trail. We’ve got you covered with this first-timer’s guide of where to go, what to eat and how to get around. So, load the bikes and buckle up. In under an hour, you’ll arrive to the scene where what was designed to improve the way people get around has become a destination itself.

Bigger than “big,” the BeltLine isn’t just the most comprehensive transportation and economic development effort ever undertaken in the City of Atlanta. It represents what can happen when a Georgia Tech graduate student’s thesis, grassroots support and city officials make real strides. Architect Ryan Gravel’s 1999 idea to redevelop a historic 22-mile railroad corridor circling downtown into a

network of public parks, multi-use trails and transit to connect neighborhoods, is now among the largest, most wide-ranging and award-winning urban redevelopment programs currently underway in the country. Four trail segments are open, as well as six new or renovated parks and a host of festivals, free fitness events and public art installations have created an enlivening community. The work continues with phases of development planned through 2030. No doubt, it’s a hip side of town, but underneath the modern restaurants and trendy menus was much of the city’s foundation. After the Civil War, Inman Park became Atlanta’s first planned community in the 1880s and one of the nation’s first garden suburbs. As the city grew, the neighborhood changed drastically, but thanks to restoration efforts in the 1970s through today, more than

300 homes are in various stages of renovation and the surrounding community has once again flourished, garnering national attention along the way.

PLOTTING YOUR PATH We recommend starting your journey with the Eastside Trail. The 2.2-mile stretch that borders Piedmont Park, passes by Ponce City Market, winds by both Historic Fourth Ward Park and culinary pop-stars in Inman Park before depositing urban explorers at Irwin Street, home to Krog Street Market (KSM). Free maps are available online or with the BeltLine app, but to be specific, we suggest starting with the latter. After all, if Travel + Leisure and Bon Appétit have taken notice, naming KSM as one of the world’s best new food halls and on the list of 50 best new restaurants, respectively,

why not play tourist, too? Any sunny Saturday or Sunday, the paved stretch is scattered with smiling people on bikes, blades, pushing strollers or pulling their pups. Not only does KSM offer plenty of parking and stalls of purveyors inside a repurposed 1920s warehouse, but you’ll begin just steps from Atlanta BeltLine Bicycle where you and your brood can rent twowheels staring at $20 per day. Pedal past colorful murals adorning the side of worn brick buildings and concrete tunnels or perhaps mosey off the main path for a refreshing King of Pops treat. Wander farther past The Window serving the now famous popsicles (at the corner of Bernina and Elizabeth Street) to discover the world of Inman Quarter. Lining the street are cafés and shops like Made Again that will already have you planning your next outing

Heard Sotto Sotto’s critical acclaims or wondered if Wisteria Restaurant is as good as some say? Here’s a great excuse to find out for yourself. These, among a dozen others, will serve three-course tiered menus between the price of $15, $25 or $35 for Inman Park Restaurant Week March 28 through April 3. inmanparkrestaurantweek.com

to the area. This eco-art gallery-meets-boutique curated by Margeau Bull proudly displays handcrafted pieces from local artisans, ranging from jewelry, textiles, apothecary and stationery to furniture, fine art and home décor. In fact, their team includes an interior design firm that is conscious of both the environment and supporting the local economy.

CAMPING OUT Whatever draws you here, it isn’t far from your car or Atlanta’s skyline, but it might feel like you’ve stepped into the wilderness. Like any good wilderness guidebook will warn, be prepared to stay awhile. At mile marker 9.25, owner Michael Lennox created the rustic yet charming Ladybird in 2014 to be an extension of the BeltLine’s active atmo-

sphere. Both the interior and the bites served for lunch, dinner or weekend brunch nod to camp nostalgia, national parks and westward travels. We can attest that when it comes to choosing between the house-made orange juice and Batdorf + Bronson coffee or avocado toast with roasted grapefruit and the Nashville hot chicken biscuit with honey and house pickles, you’re better off with all of the above. “Urban explorers” can choose to enjoy their reveille on the patio, at the bar, the indoor picnic-style tables by the windows, or new this month, in the Grove. The 4,000-square-foot area will more than double the dogfriendly outdoor seating and expand the fun factor — think large teepees, Adirondack chairs, retro metal gliders and communal beer garden PHOTOS COURTESY OF ROYA MILLER; SARAH DODGE

tables, alongside plenty of bike racks, string lights and Ping Pong tables. Our favorite part? A vintage camper converted into a bar that will serve a separate drinks-only menu, including bottled cocktails.

MAPPING THE BIGGER PICTURE As the folks behind the BeltLine Project put it: “City leaders the world over spend decades seeking ways to upgrade infrastructure, improve housing opportunities, revolutionize transportation services, promote new job growth and bring communities together. The Atlanta BeltLine accomplishes every one of these elements, and as the project takes shape, it will provide a blueprint for urban renewal that will be envied and followed by cities across the country and around the world.” Maybe you spend your Saturday just spinning your wheels, maybe you try something different. Maybe you show your kids what can happen when someone’s idea comes to life and can reshape an entire place. PN

Now, pro lacrosse in Atlanta is here to say, but before the Atlanta Blaze take the field as MLL’s ninth franchise for their home opener on April 23 against the Chesapeake Bayhawks, it’s important to revisit how and why it all happened. Rewind another six years earlier to when the lacrosse On the professional side, he played in the MLL for scene had a much different vibe in Atlanta. FEATURE HEADER

GLORY DAYS, TAKE TWO

Maybe your chances of becoming a lacrosse pro are in the rear view mirror, or you’re entry-level to the sport but over the age to enroll in the Blaze Training Academy. The over-35 crowd that lives in North Metro Atlanta and still wants to play lacrosse would say, “So what?” and invite you to join one of their pick-up games. Instead of just coaching and watching their kids have all the fun, this group of “old dudes” started in 2012 with the belief that “age and treachery will overcome youth and skill.” The next thing they knew, Old Guy Lacrosse was getting attention on the news and had 10 teams, capped at 25 players each and scheduled in a year-round program as well as a fall tournament and no-experience-necessary pick-up games. On a mission to grow the sport in our region, build better coaches and better parents, with fun as a guiding principle – and age as a little detail – they implemented modifications to rules and recorded their philosophies, both of which can be downloaded on their website. Next month the Old Guy Lax’ers have a cool opportunity many kids would love to have – the chance to play at the Gwinnett Arena prior to the 7 p.m. Georgia Swarm game April 2. They’re planning for two 45-minute games in the afternoon. For more details and to register, visit oldguylacrosse.com or, when you grow up, give the “Reluctant Commissioner” Chuck Smith a call at 770-757-1478.

NEED FOR SPEED Ask Banks, and he will second the notion that Atlanta is an emerging hotbed for lacrosse. The lightening fast, high scoring, contact sport is a strategic blend of hockey, soccer, football and basketball. “Lacrosse brings the action hard for 60 minutes,” said Banks, who was announced as vice president for The Blaze in January. “It’s the fastest game on two feet. There is an incredible amount of skill, IQ and physicality in the game. People who come to a Blaze game are likely to come back because it is pure entertainment. The sport is a very family friendly event that caters to parents and children every step along the way.” Banks’ last point rests at the center of the team’s marketing and participation efforts. Today, more than 15,000 kids play lacrosse in Georgia, with Atlanta serving as the hub of activity for LAX (as the sport is known for short) players throughout the Southeast. At a national glance, over the past five years, the sport has added 804,000 players, according to the “2015 U.S. Trends in Team Sports” study by Sports and Fitness Industry Association (SFIA). The numbers make it the third fastest growing participation sport in the country, behind only gymnastics and ice hockey, SFIA reports. “Between the amount of players playing, the growth rate in Georgia and the sport’s fans, we feel it is going to be a perfect fit,” Banks said. “Lacrosse is the fastest growing sport in the country and we’re helping add to that. It feels great to know we can cater to all different age groups, and provide a game and environment that is fun for people of all ages.” Along with traditional marketing efforts such as television, radio and billboards, the Blaze is creating a “street team” consisting of players who will visit local elementary and middle schools to further introduce lacrosse to the masses. “The challenge in Year One will be to educate people on the game,” Banks said. “Lacrosse is new to some

people, and all we ask is that you come out and see it one time — to see some of the best athletes in the world compete.”

YOUR LAX ADDICTION STARTS NOW In addition to bringing in pros, the Blaze plans to foster beginning players with the Blaze Training Academy, Blaze Summer Camps, coaching clinics and tournaments. The training academies launched last month at three different locations throughout metro Atlanta — KSU, Greater Atlanta Christian School and in Peachtree City — for a sixmonth program. “When kids play lacrosse, they become addicted,” Banks said. “The No. 1 comment we hear from parents is, ‘I wish this sport was around when I was a kid.’ There are more coaches being developed each year, which has been a large part of the sport’s growth. We are hoping that MLL [here] will not only help give kids exposure, but get them hooked for life, too.” David Corson, a veteran lax player who played at The Peddie School in Hightstown, N.J., and collegiately in the early ’80s at the University of Denver (last year’s national championship winner), said that many young spring athletes are moving away from baseball and softball, and into the fast-pace stride that lacrosse offers. For some perspective on the state’s lacrosse scene, US Lacrosse, the sport’s governing body for youth and high school lacrosse, encompasses 68 local chapters covering 45 states. Georgia is No. 11 in terms of size and active members.

20 | POINTS NORTH | March 2016

“Every major high school or private school in the Atlanta area has lacrosse teams, and it is getting harder to make a team every season,” said Corson, who along with serving as head coach of the North Gwinnett High School Boys Lacrosse Club Team is a board member of both the North Georgia Lacrosse and Old Guy Lacrosse leagues, the latter group proving how passion for the sport extends beyond players’ school years. “Getting kids to start young is so important. They will play together as they grow. Repetition breeds excellence.” That repetition — in both participation and fandom — is what the Blaze is hoping to help deliver to Atlanta, and why the team’s majority owner, builder and developer Peter Trematerra, sought to bring a team here three years ago. “It all came together when the MLL Championships showed there was a demand,” Banks said. “Since our announcement [last August], the team has exploded and we are beyond ecstatic to be part of this amazing experience.” PN FOR MORE INFORMATION atlantablaze.com georgialacrossefoundation.webs.com Season tickets for the inaugural season are currently on sale, as well as tickets to the home opener. OUR

MEETING of the

The progression of Roswell ’s friendliest place for provisions

written by PAMELA A. KEENE

the

pairing was as natural as a croissant with

a cup of coffee. Lorry Kemp and Kelly Smith-Blacha met by chance when they were back-door neighbors in a Roswell subdivision in the late 1990s. Kemp worked full-time in television production at Turner Broadcasting, commuting to downtown Atlanta daily; Smith-Blacha, a self-taught baker, created outrageously popular cakes that she sold first from her home and later from a small shop on Mimosa Boulevard in the city’s historic district. “We are so much alike, yet we complement each other’s strengths and talents,” Smith-Blacha said. Right back at her, Kemp responded, “And, we’re perfect as business partners and as friends, because Kelly is the creative one and —“ “Lorry is the organized one,” Smith-Blacha finished.

OPPOSITES ATTRACT In some ways, they’re complete opposites. Kemp grew up in Massachusetts, where she studied at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. She came to Atlanta on a student exchange program with Georgia State University and interned at Turner. “I liked it here so much that I just never went back home,” she said. A Nashville, Tenn. native, SmithBlacha also came to Georgia as a young adult and ultimately decided to stay. Eventually both of them and their families ended up in the same subdivision in Roswell; that was almost 17 years ago. As their friendship grew, they began to chat about their careers and the direction of their lives. Smith-Blacha’s business was booming and Kemp was preparing to give birth to twin boys. “Lorry had been helping me with the numbers side of the cake business and it just evolved that she was ready to leave her full-time job downtown and focus on raising the twins,” Smith-Blacha said. The two formed a more formal partnership and sought out larger space in Roswell’s historic district. In June 2008, they settled on the upstairs space in a building from the late 1800s and opened Party Chic by KellyKakes. With several smaller rooms off the large center area, it was perfect as an event facility, so they also began catering special occasions with Smith-Blacha’s cakes. “We intended to do cakes and to be a full-service party and event venue,” Smith-Blacha said. “We were doing lots of bridal and baby showers, selling cakes and other retail items upstairs. People kept saying that it would be great if we did lunch, so we started serving light food.” Business was going well, and the duo approached their landlord about expansion space downstairs when the previous tenant, an antique store, closed its doors. “So many people wanted to be in this area, but we were able to negotiate a lease for part of the downstairs and opened Roswell Provisions on Canton Street in [Oct.] 2011,” Kemp said. “The downstairs became a community market with an old-world European feel, where we sell high-quality meats, cheeses, desserts, pastries, fine wines, olive oils and other items, with a little bit of retail mixed in.”

PASTRIES, QUICHES AND CARPENTRY As Roswell Provisions’ market grew, it became the driving force behind the partnership. “We started serving breakfast and lunch downstairs in the market,” Smith-Blacha said, adding, “Still, unless they had been PHOTOS COURTESY OF ROSWELL PROVISIONS

here for special events, people didn’t realize that our café was upstairs. It was time to kick it up a notch.” In 2014, they undertook a major renovation, restyling the upstairs space into a more refined, yet casually rustic and country French café, named Le Bistro. “Most women get excited at a shoe store, but I really like hardware stores,” said Smith-Blacha, who used her carpentry skills to transform the space. “We realized we needed to make the décor of the upstairs a bit more appealing to corporate guests, a little more masculine than our previous décor, which was very feminine.” She capitalized on the used-brick walls and open-ceiling beams and added large French-deco posters and other art. French music plays softly in the background as diners enjoy the bistro-style menu of sandwiches, soups, quiche, salads and desserts. In fact, the menu offers more than a dozen signature desserts from various flavors of crépes and tarts to crème brulee, cupcakes and cakes. An intimate bar and lounge, adjacent to the front balcony, offers views that overlook Canton Street. Kemp and Smith-Blacha have also recently created Roswell Provisions Wine and Social Club, nicknamed Le Wine Club, a monthly calendar of wine tasting and other culinary related events. The tastings include samplings of three to five wines paired with light bites, orchestrated by a wine expert.

MORE THAN PROVISIONS Le Wine Club also hosts monthly Chef Community Table Wine Dinners, complete with wine pairings and themed menus prepared by local guest chefs. The La Famiglia Italian Wine Dinner was recently led by Chef Mix McCrory who shared his con-

temporary take on old-school Italian specialties, served family style. A wine expert helped guests learn more about the meal’s wine pairings. “Our Chef Community Table events have become very popular,” Kemp said. “We always have such a great time and it’s yet another way that we can help bring members of the community together in a fun setting.” Kemp and Smith-Blacha see part of their roles as businesswomen in Roswell through the sense of community they’ve created at Roswell Provisions. Their community table near the front of the market seats eight, encouraging people to share the space with others. “It’s been amazing to see how people have reacted to the community table,” Smith-Blacha said. “We’re pet friendly too; the whole idea is to build a strong sense of community here.” It’s clearly working, as Roswell Provisions market stays busy seven days a week with neighbors popping in and out. Upstairs, Le Bistro is a versatile venue for private functions, parties, showers, family reunions and rehearsal dinners, corporate events and business meetings. The space can accommodate groups of 10 to 100. On Saturday nights, Le Bistro stays open for dinner with live music. In other words, the ever-evolving shop that Kemp and Smith-Blacha have built exists more than just to “supply with food, drink or equipment, especially for a journey” as Oxford Dictionary defines the word “provisions.” It offers the chance to meet and repeatedly gather with friends, and you never know where a journey of friendship may take you. MAKE YOURSELF

Soon, Northern transplants like myself will be heading up the I-95 corridor on the way to their old stomping grounds in the Northeast or simply seeking cooler climes in the late spring or early summer. Maybe it will be a beach trip to Ocean City, Md., Rehobeth Beach, Del., or Long Beach Island, N.J., for example, or perhaps a trip to D.C. or Baltimore is on the slate? Turf Valley is situated amidst the lush rolling hills and horse country of Maryland, just 20 minutes by car from Baltimore’s Inner Harbor and approximately 45 minutes north of D.C. In addition to its prime location, I appreciated finding Turf Valley a bit of an oddity in this age of corporately owned and operated resort hotels. 38 | POINTS NORTH | March 2016

at Home A GENUINE FAMILY TRADITION CONTINUES written by CARL DANBURY, JR.

Privately owned by the Mangione family since 1978, the beginnings were a resurrected country club and special events facility that has blossomed into one of the area’s finest resorts boasting 172 guestrooms, including 70 suites, three buildings offering 26 spacious two- or three-bedroom, extended-stay villas, two 18-hole golf courses, a luxurious, full-service spa, indoor and outdoor pools, three tennis courts, a 24-hour fitness center, 40,000 square feet of meeting and event space and Alexandra’s restaurant. The resort sprawls over more than 1,000 acres near historic Ellicott City and Columbia, Md., and is within cannon shot of a dozen or so Civil War sites, numerous

antique shops and a myriad of microbreweries that call Howard County and the surrounding area home. While the amenities truly categorize Turf Valley as a resort, it’s the absolute genuine service and care provided by the staff that sets this remarkable venue apart. When Nick Mangione, who passed away six years ago, and matriarch Mary Mangione, purchased the property, it was a mere shadow of what Turf Valley has become. One of the Mangione’s 10 children, Pete, is the general manager of the property, and has overseen the advancement of it since graduating from nearby Loyola University. “It has been a fun project because it has changed a lot over the years,” Pete said. When his family took over, Turf Valley was a country club with a public restaurant, PHOTOS COURTESY OF TURF VALLEY

two ballrooms and a clubhouse. “In a way, we are kind of an oddity in that we grew up on the country club side first, and were doing events before the hotel was even here. All that changed when we built the hotel in 1988. It was my father’s vision and my father’s money, and my blood and my sweat,” Pete chuckled. “My father really was a brilliant man.”

REASONS TO CELEBRATE

Some would argue that brides are a category of customer all their own, yet Turf Valley excels at taking care of them too by hosting about 100 weddings every year It has become a one-stop shop for those occasions. In fact, The Turf Valley Wedding Extravaganza just completed its 36th year. Commonplace is a weekend where guests can enjoy rehearsal dinners, wedding day functions and Sunday brunches without ever having to leave the property. Meanwhile, Mondays through Thursdays are typically laden with customized corporate events. Those booking two- or three-day functions typically speak with the same Turf Valley representative year after year, and that familiarity provides an enjoyable affinity for both sides. For those who enjoy Turf Valley strictly for leisurely pursuits, the golf courses are beautiful layouts and are well maintained. The Original Course is the more traditional of the two, a Parkland layout amidst mature trees and well-placed bunkers, while the Hialeah Course, is narrow, hilly and requires more precise shot making. Both courses are open year round and several golf packages are offered. The Turf Valley Spa offers several types of massages, including the unforgettable Warm River Rock Massage, a 75-minute ancient style of therapy that utilizes smooth, oiled basalt stones that relieve muscle tension and aching joints. The Sea Glow Body Polish and Radiant Wrap also are highly recommended.

The Mangione’s business enterprise extends from assisted facilities, hotel property management, construction, risk management, property development, interior design and the legal field. “We are a true family business. I have 10 brothers and sisters, and 37 nieces and nephews. We run it like a family business, and the employees truly become part of the family,” Pete said. “It’s a nice place to work. It’s fairly casual. I have fun doing this every day and I like to make it fun for everyone else. Probably what I am most proud of is that we have 15 directors or department heads whose average length of employment here is 19 years. It is a team that has been together for a long time. I came here right out of college. I learned from the school of hard knocks.” That education is partial to leading with the heart, rather than from the checkbook. Those we met during our visit were polite, straightforward and genuine. “We lead that way, the directors lead that way and the staff follows the program. We’re not following a corporate plan that was sent to us by someone out of New York. We do it all right here. We believe there are two sets of customers: the PHOTOS COURTESY OF TURF VALLEY

the lemon Marscapone cheesecake and the pecan pie bread pudding with bourbon ice cream. If you are just passing by Turf Valley along I-70 one Sunday, make plans to stop for brunch. Served from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., it’s a treat you should experience at least once.

THE TRADITION CONTINUES

external customers that come here to get what they want, and the internal customers, which is our staff. You take care of the staff, and they, in turn, take care of the external customers. It’s a simple philosophy. It’s a nice place to come to relax, and we try to take care of everyone the best that we can,” he said.

MARK YOUR CALENDAR The Preakness Celebration Hot Air Balloon Festival will be held May 18 through 20 this year. The annual, free-admission event includes family activities, handmade crafts, retail and food vendors, live entertainment and balloon-related activities such as tethered hot air balloon rides, a walk-through of an inflated hot air balloon, pilot demonstrations, balloon launches and a nightly Balloon Glow at dusk. Balloon rides and flights are fee-based.

HIGH CULINARY MARKS Chef Chris Vocci’s cuisine at Alexandra’s Restaurant comes with high praise. After spending five years at Baltimore Country Club where he learned to demand excellence, not perfection from himself and his staff, Vocci calls upon his mix of Italian, Pennsylvania Dutch, Scottish and Dominican heritage to create dishes from the bounties of the Chesapeake Bay and local farms. He and his staff create a plethora of customized menus for guests‘ special events, and he changes Alexandra’s menu three times per year. Traditional regional dishes like crab cakes and Maryland Crab soup mustn’t be redefined, but rather fulfilled. “We don’t reinvent the iconic dishes guests expect; we have to deliver the expectation to the name of the dish,” Vocci said. His staff makes six gallons of crab soup three times per week, allowing each batch to settle overnight for maximum flavor. Attentive customers will enjoy Vocci’s seared scallops, Louisiana shrimp and grits, and his amazing White Lasagna, which features roasted chicken, roasted mushrooms, truffle Parmesan cream, broccolini, oven-roasted tomatoes and crostini. For dessert, look intently toward

Truly, one experience here will likely lead to regular visits in the future. Turf Valley is comfortable, like a visit to an old friend. “They treat everyone with respect,” Vocci said. “The environment here is incredible. For people to stay here 22, 25 or 37 years speaks huge volumes.” It is simply part of the enduring legacy handed down from parents to children and beyond. “We truly are the luckiest people on the face of this earth,” Mangione offered. “Everybody is healthy and we’re now introducing the grandchildren into the business. They have choices, just like all of us had choices. My father didn’t demand that we all come into the business, but this looked like a pretty good opportunity to me, so I took it.” He said he doesn’t expect all 37 to come into the family business, but those who want to work are welcome, although he does hope tradition endures. “I don’t foresee the resort changing so much in the future. I think we have grown up, and this is what we are,” Mangione said. “I expect for the property to be in the family forever. We have no intentions of selling it, and I can tell you that it is more for pride of ownership than it is about making money. This is really the showcase of our family portfolio.” For guests, it’s a genuine masterpiece. PN

POWER PLAY AT THE WORLD’S LARGEST MARRIOTT RESORT written by COLLEEN ANN MCNALLY

T

WENTY MINUTES AFTER EXITING THE ORLANDO WORLD CENTER MARRIOTT INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT, I STEPPED INTO THE LOBBY AND EXHALED.

For starters, the instances of Mickey Mouse paraphernalia in sight could be counted on one hand. Next, the long line of travelers waiting to check into their poolside suites was expedited by the number — well into the double digits — of smiling faces behind the counter. Beyond the revolving door of arrivals, windows afforded a peek at the water waiting below as well as cast the scene in a glow, complementing its contemporary multi-million dollar renovation. Set in the context of America’s most visited city, certainly any hotel calling Orlando home should live up to magical expectations. With Walt Disney World located a little more than a mile away, a convenient shuttle service is included for guests. Yet, other than the Magical Kingdom’s nightly fireworks seen from a suite’s balcony, the proximity can be easy to

forget. Watching friends in their resort best reunite for a wedding weekend among business-attire-clad travelers, I realized not all come crazed for theme parks. The Orlando World Center Marriott, now an energetic and culturally diverse destination for all ages, succeeds as an accommodating landmark hotel.

WORLD OF POSSIBILITIES As the name suggests, the Orlando World Center Marriott is the brand’s biggest, with 28 floors and 2,009 guestrooms in 10 varieties under one roof. Sure, the sheer size and scope will thrill your inner kid – one look at the Falls Pool Oasis’ two 200-foot winding waterslides and a 90-foot speed slide is confirmation – but what’s more impressive is the innovative thinking. With such a high volume of visitors, PHOTOS COURTESY OF ORLANDO WORLD CENTER MARRIOTT

of Excellence at the 2014 American Culinary Federation National Convention. Award-winning dinners can be enjoyed with a carafe of paired wine, a flight or the experience of garden-to-glass in a whole new way. As added incentive for exiting your comfort zone, bartenders will stamp your “Passport to Relaxation.” From the build-your-own Bloody Mary bar at Solaris to a Mai Tai at the Mikado Japanese-style Steak House, guests that visit all seven bars on property and turn the booklet back into any restaurant manager will return home with an extra souvenir and bragging rights.

SOME WORK, ALL FUN While the passport is another great excuse to linger on a chaise with a cool drink, it wouldn’t be Florida without soaking up the sun. Between children’s activities and the 6,602-yard, par-71 course at Hawk’s Landing Golf Club, it’s hard to decide which age group is positioned to have more fun. Go for something different with a round of FootGolf or improve your golf game with a lesson from the best at the Bill Madonna Golf Academy. Consistently ranked “Top 100 teachers in America” by Golf Magazine, the sage has decades of experience teaching pros and amateurs alike, guaranteeing improvement — no matter the skill level — after just one session. If something more relaxing strikes your fancy, go “Around the World in 80 Minutes” while face down. The onsite spa’s signature massage uses a variety of globally inspired techniques to soothe, as well as offers a menu of chamomile body polishes, enticing aromatherapy journeys and more. Believe it or not, work does get accomplished too, or so we’re told that’s where the 450,000 square feet of flexible gathering space for meetings, conventions, weddings, receptions and social soirées come into play. Although with expert event planners and caterers ready to assist with all details of business or social events (insider tip: Executive Pastry Chef Ramon Ramos could give Willy Wonka a run for his money), we won’t tell if you spend a free hour here or there spoiling yourself. Guy’s TIME

A Film He Couldn’t Refuse written by CARL DANBURY, JR.

W Why do you watch “The Godfather?”

It’s a question wives and girlfriends have asked for the past 44 years since the film debuted March 15, 1972, yet there is no easy answer to the question. Amid the eerie musical score, extraordinary technical achievements, such as making many scenes seem like they had been shot 30 to 40 years prior, brilliant performances by Robert Duvall (Tom Hagen), Abe Vigoda (Tessio), Richard S. Castellano (Clemenza), John Marley (Jack Woltz), Marlon Brando (Don Vito Corleone) and especially Al Pacino (Michael Corleone), the riveting, unsettling and immoral dramatic scenes transfixed all who were unaccustomed to such malevolence. Maybe some men secretly harbor the will to possess the incongruous ability to be both miscreant and altruist when it serves their own purpose, much like the Godfather himself.

As Roger Ebert so wisely noted in his review back in ’72, “the actors supply one example after another of inspired casting. Although ‘The Godfather’ is a long, minutely detailed movie of some three hours, there naturally isn’t time to go into the backgrounds and identities of such characters as Clemenza . . . and the rest. Coppola and Producer Al Ruddy skirt this problem with understated typecasting.” That’s just it. Even in a violent world so foreign to most of us who watch the film time and time again, “The Godfather” strikes a chord because the characters are so familiar to people we have met before in our lives. We might not have known a professional hit man like Luca Brasi (played by Lenny Montana), but we certainly know those who are blindly loyal like him. We might not know a family lieutenant like Tessio, but we likely know

someone who turned against us because “it was only business.” We have known or know the power hungry, the angry and reckless, the peacemaker, the doting old grandfather with an inglorious past, the people pleaser and the insecure man who just didn’t measure up to his brothers. We have known or know the classless, the paradoxical, the sacrificial hero, those who ignore the truth and the perpetual outsider. Perhaps most of all, the reluctant leaders of a family business captivate us. Michael’s traits include calmness, calculating nerve and resolve to succeed, even though being the head of the family isn’t something he planned to do. Robert Zemeckis, director of “Back to the Future,” “Romancing the Stone,” “Forest Gump” and others, qualified Michael’s character in “The Godfather” during an interview with The Telegraph in early 2015: “The first movie is really Michael’s story, he’s the pivotal character. Pacino’s character is deeply sad and broken. It’s almost Shakespearean, in that he has to do something he never really wanted to. He’s full of regret and dread — it’s a beautiful performance.” Clearly so, when we still find ourselves discussing it all these years later. However, it wasn’t always as obvious. Then 31 years old, Director Francis Ford Coppola called Pacino and told him that he wanted him to play Michael, yet Paramount Pictures was reluctant to cast a New York-based stage actor for such a monumental role. After auditioning four times, studio ILLUSTRATION COURTESY OF ROBIN HARRISON

executives viewed an eight-minute clip from Pacino’s second-ever screen role, “Panic in Needle Park,” which had not been released at that time. It was that performance that convinced them to take a chance on Pacino as Michael. Later, he was nominated for Best Actor in a Supporting Role, but the Academy, at that time, failed to recognize that the son was actually the true leading role, not the Godfather.

However, the main reference point “The Godfatherâ€? instilled is the sense that America is the prototypical, enduring nation of immigrants. In this case, Italians, or Sicilians if you prefer, embarked upon their own journey of trying to foster the American dream. The Corleone family began with a somewhat legitimate olive oil business, which then led them to other less honorable business pursuits. Then, a second-generation son goes to college, joins the Army, becomes a war hero with hopes of becoming a politician or something less extortionist than the family business had become. That is, until the attempted murder of his father leads Michael to become an integral part of the business, and the eventual head of the enterprise. And even though in this case it’s not a legitimate, above-the-law business, our country is rife with honorable examples of immigrant families who have passed along their business enterprises to sons, daughters, grandsons and granddaughters throughout our country’s history. Still, examples of extraordinary family enterprises like the Mangiones (see Turf Valley on page 38) of Maryland can be found today. Nick and Mary Mangione created a lasting legacy in hotel ownership and management, real estate development, interior design, risk management, the legal profession, construction and assisted living facilities where all 10 of their children and a few of their 37 grandchildren are involved and active in the family business. The Mangiones bear witness to the American dream and their family values transcend birthright by providing employment for hundreds. You may ask why would I reference a movie that was released 44 years ago, instead of focusing upon a recently released ďŹ lm? “It’s not personal, Sonny. It’s strictly business.â€? PN

After THOUGHTS

We’re springing forward in a couple of weeks and for those of us here at the magazine, we couldn’t be more excited. This month, we share what we love most about spring.

“It’s March Madness! That’s what I love most about spring … that and perfect running weather.”

“My rites of spring: white wine, any kind of oysters and an outdoor patio (optional). Dreaming of the Kimball House, Goin’ Coastal, Doug Torbush’s new Drift Fish House & Oyster Bar at The Avenue East Cobb, or longtime fave – Hammocks Trading Company.” Carl
