Three days in to
Holmes and Alfred “Tup” Holmes and Charles Bell undoubtedly noticed the golfing exploits of Sifford, Wheeler and the accomplished champions Ted Rhodes, Zeke Hartsfield and Bill Spiller. After being rejected at Buckhead’s public Bobby Jones Golf Course in 1951, they filed a lawsuit, Holmes vs. Atlanta, aiming to desegregate golf courses and public parks. They lost. The plaintiffs pursued the matter (with assistance from NAACP’s legal team led by Thurgood Marshall) to the U.S. Court of Appeals in New Orleans. When the initial ruling was upheld, the litigious foursome issued another mulligan — a hearing in the fall of 1955 before the U.S. Supreme Court. The favorable ruling came just 24 days before Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat on a Montgomery bus. Thus, a game for the affluent became the teeing ground of Atlanta’s first case against segregation, leaving a legacy that extends far beyond the month of February.

Black History Month, Charlie Sifford died at 92. If you don’t play or follow golf, you likely didn’t know of his passing, his significance or his autobiography “Just Let Me Play.” African-American golfers were forbidden by the Professional Golfers of America (PGA) to participate in most tour events until 1960, when Sifford received an approved tournament player card. In 1961, he became a full member and the first to play on tour, essentially becoming golf’s Jackie Robinson. He earned his first win at the 1967 Hartford Open, followed by the L.A. Open in 1969 and the PGA Seniors Championship in 1975, all after the age of 45. When a young Sifford moved from Charlotte to Philadelphia, he discovered that unlike in the segregated South, he could play unimpeded by race. There, Sifford often faced off with Cobbs Creek’s undisputed champion at the time, Howard "Butch" Wheeler, a former caddie for Bobby Jones at Brookhaven Country Club (now Capital City Club). Now that you’ve got the award-winning outfit, it’s time to see a show! T H E E A R L S M I T H S T R A N D T H E AT R E A noted landmark on the historic Marietta Square, the Strand got its start as a major motion picture house in 1935 until 1976. Then in 2003, the nonprofit organization Friends of The Strand was formed and began a capital campaign to bring back the theatre to its original Art Deco glory, with a grand reopening in 2009. Now the red seats regularly fill for guests to screen films as well as watch live theatrical productions, with upcoming performances of “Legally Blonde Jr.” scheduled for May. Walking through the theatre’s lobby, you can almost imagine the early nights when the marquee outside was first lit. Experience it for yourself this season with a visit to the vintage atmosphere of the upstairs Lumière Lounge. In true fashion, the theatre is paying homage to the days of old with the silent film inspired piano bar and lounge, open Friday and Saturday nights with specialty cocktails. you breezy thing. With the Oscars wrapped and spring break still a chilly month away, what’s an Atlantan to do? We say keep the cinematic ball rolling by attending the 39th annual Atlanta Film Festival (ATLFF). Running March 20 through 29, the ATLFF is one of only two dozen Academy Award-qualifying festivals in the United States. Kristy Breneman, the festival’s programming director, is a powerhouse in the local arts community, serving on the Board of Directors for three of the city’s

most influential creative organizations — WonderRoot, Association Internationale du Film d’Animation Atlanta chapter and The Plaza Theatre Foundation. The latter benefits the city’s oldest, continuously operating independent theater. Built on Ponce de Leon Avenue in 1939, The Plaza’s rich velvet curtains and original sconces lend historic sparkle while hosting the bulk of the festivities. And while Breneman is busy overseeing one of the largest and longest running film festivals in the country, she’s not the only woman calling the shots this year at an event proud to acknowledge the
girl power of female filmmakers. Points North Atlanta spoke with four of them, picking their brains on story telling, sexism and rolling tape on anti-antebellum sentiment deep in the land of Scarlett O’Hara. Pass the popcorn as we celebrate independent female filmmakers brimming with moxie, and a movie industry cranking away on our home turf. New Focus, Old South Danielle Beverly is a documentary filmmaker on constant surveillance for a story that matters. And it had better be a good
one. On average, the director spends three to five years camped out wherever she needs to be listening, following and filming. No rush jobs allowed. When an old friend rang Beverly up and told her what was brewing in a little town we like to call Athens, she threw cameras in the car and headed deep into Dawg Nation. Shot entirely in Athens, “Old South” traces the fall out when Confederate flagflying Kappa Alphas at the University of Georgia decide to build their new plantation-style fraternity house in an AfricanAmerican neighborhood that is 150 years old. In response, Hope Iglehart, a softspoken professional, hits the gentrification pause-button, fighting to save the historical integrity in the community she was raised. “Love Athens,” I gushed. “Great town!” “Athens,” Beverly schooled, “is an extremely racially divided town.” The director shot scenes during a three-and-a-half year duration, grabbing her camera and tearing down the street whenever action called. She admitted feeling a deep responsibility to the people she films, mindful of their trust. Though the KA chapter undoubtedly creates a contentious situation, the boys start philanthropic work in the community garden and install irrigation piping. Both sides

start to chill and accept each other. In the end, Beverly summarized the work with a single word: legacy. When conversation flipped its focus, Beverly described herself as an observational documentary filmmaker, meaning she feels more like a professional listener than a movie director. “Documentary making is very good for me,” Beverly reflected. “It allows me to be quiet and observe, not talk.” The one-woman gusto is unfazed working solo, often playing triadic roles of director, producer and cameraperson. After all, a lone-wolf filmmaker has distinct advantages. Think about who you would feel more comfortable filming you: a bulky camera crew comprised of a dozen men, or a petite lady sporting pixie tresses and a single lens? “I’ve found people will open up more to a woman than a man,” Beverly said. “Especially men. A man might not share his personal thoughts with another man, but he will with a woman.” She conceded that hurdles remain for female filmmakers, with sexism and difficulties garnering funds topping the list. Credit goes to her mother for loading daughter up with fortitude, and an oh-sohandy indomitable spirit that never gives up. When asked her advice for local girls aspiring to be filmmakers, the director enigmatically switched focus again. “I would encourage moms to pick up a camera and start filming a movie.” “Moms?” I repeated. “They’re the ones who have something to say,” she offered, voice turning decisive. “They’re the ones with stories.”

The Sound of Activism The Northside’s own Erin Bernhardt graduated from Centennial High School before bounding off to the University of Virginia and the Peace Corps. A former CNN writer/producer, the perky blond with a super-sized heart describes herself as a creative activist, committed to making movies that matter. Her dedication to the developing world could not be more evident than in her independent documentary “IMBA MEANS SING.” For producer Bernhardt, this isn’t just her film; it’s her baby. While living overseas, she fell in love with the African Children’s Choir and their mission to train young people via music, education and travel. After touring, the program returns kids to their homelands stockpiled with

tools for bettering their communities’ future — a bonafide help-us, help-ourselves operation. Bernhardt has spent the past three years bringing the story of a young boy named Moses, a drummer from the slums of Kampala, Uganda, to cinematic life. She’s poured heart, soul and a zillion sleepless nights into crafting this film, so the least we could do is scoot across town and watch it. “I wanted to do something 100 percent meaningful,” Bernhardt explained. If you guessed “imba” translates into “sing,” you earn a gold star. The uncomplicated Swahili word pops off the tongue like a happy staccato note, weaving together a fitting title to this character portrait. One of the coolest aspects of the film? Its success stands on the shoulders of not one superwoman, but two. Director Danielle Bernstein is also a native Atlantan who is passionate about creating environmental and social-impact documentaries. Years ago Bernstein and Bernhardt met at a benefit concert, instantly clicked and swapped contact info. When time came to nab the right director for this project, Bernhardt didn’t flip far through her Rolodex. “I firmly believe a beautifully told story can make a difference,” Bernstein explained, dark lashes framing somber

eyes. “I love making documentaries because they give a voice to people who don’t normally have one.” Not that it’s easy. Bernstein cautioned she’s learned the hard way that no one is going to help you if you don’t help yourself. Considering the accolades and awards her past work has garnered, she seems to have it figured out. In 2006, Bernstein founded Atlantabased Clear Film Productions and now operates it with filmmaker and photographer Jason Maris. This unique film production company is on a mission to partner with organizations that offer solutions to social movements. Creating beautiful imagery is a must, yet it is half the battle. People like Bernstein and Bernhardt crave viewers willing to act. For example, after watching “IMBA,” easy action steps would include plugging into nonprofits like Atlanta Music Project and Girl Talk or, calling Bernhardt directly. She and Bernstein will come out to your school, church or synagogue, loaded with educational materials and discussion guides to accompany a screening. Many of us muse about changing the world, or at least making a dent. This talented duo is actually doing it. From LA to ATL Of course, not every feature at this year’s ATLFF is a documentary striving for epic social impact. Some movies are born to make you laugh. Or jar you. Or somewhere in between. Take "Female Pervert," a narrative written and directed by Jiyoung Lee, for instance. Let’s just say this one’s not for the kiddies. Hailing from South Korea and Los Angeles, Calif., Lee migrated to Atlanta seven years ago and plans on staying. She can create here. Her film was shot entirely in Georgia, and Lee was quick to praise Atlanta for supporting filmmaking through ease of securing location permits, tax incentives and good old community support. Lee insisted loads of hidden culture is tucked into her adopted home town, if one knows where to look. For aspiring writers, she suggested Write Club Atlanta — a group of wordsmiths who dual against each other on opposing concepts in timed competitive bouts. The linguistic brutality takes place every second Wednesday of the month at the Highland Inn Ballroom Lounge. The filmmaker revealed she digs the creative writing process possibly more than directing, but it’s a close call. She learned the fundamentals of her trade by surviving film school at Syracuse University, yet counsels aspiring filmmakers here in the Southeast to consider North Carolina School of the Arts. “So many of their alumni have been successful in their fields,” Lee said, adding, “It’s a great place to make connections that will help later on in a career.” The 39th annual Atlanta Film Festival is another opportunity to mix and mingle with creative minds. TWO MEN LACE UP THEIR RUNNING SHOES AND TIE TOGETHER A COMMUNITY { WRITTEN BY CHRISTINA SCALERA }

ince Smith joined Weight Watchers with the goal of shedding pounds and gaining energy. Choosing to share his journey socially through personal posts to his Facebook account, Smith received encouragement and support from friends, acquaintances and even strangers. What started as a common weight loss pursuit quickly turned into something greater when, only a few months into his calorie counting, he was diagnosed with prostate cancer. This detour is not only where his story differs, but perhaps also where his real pilgrimage began. Digging Deep The correlation between happiness and having a purpose in life is well documented by psychologists. FulďŹ lling a purpose helps us achieve goals, from something as small as getting the house cleaned to as large as completing a marathon. Often, a signiďŹ cant part of being successful stems from local support whether rooted in sports, religion or charity, as each provides the opportunity to spotlight the needs of others. When, on occasion, these dedicated lights converge, the effect is expansive, as the person giving back realizes

that, in fact, the act is synergistically reciprocating. What would have been a devastating blow for many, Smith took as an opportunity to help others. As the executive director for The Gateway Center in Atlanta, he has spent almost 10 years providing support and a continuum of care to individuals as they gain the necessary tools to move beyond homelessness. Along with the cancer diagnosis last September came the unappable resolve to run 12 races, all 5K distances (3.1 miles), before the end of 2014. “I decided to do that when encouraged by the folks at Orion Racing. They believed that could be a goal that could be achieved,â€? Smith said, adding, “There are so many things happening in my life, it became a personal challenge to myself amidst many other challenges that I have no control over. This one I can manage.â€? Not only was he bringing awareness to an often overlooked cancer, he was encouraging others — with or without cancer — to make the best of their lives “with the time and energy [they] have left.â€? In true Smith fashion, the 64 year old hit the ground running by ďŹ nishing three 5K
races in a 24-hour period, with the help of daylight savings: one in North Fulton in the morning, a second in Piedmont Park which he started late but managed to ďŹ nish and the third, a race called Finish Before You Start, held at Town Center in Kennesaw during the time change. “For me, running is a time of peace and solitude. I see lots of faces from my life’s past and I have an opportunity to pray for those individuals,â€? Smith said. “I ďŹ nd that [as a result] my spirit gets brighter and my head gets clearer.â€? His face lit up when he talked about the finish line at each race. He doesn’t recall how tired his muscles felt or whether he beat his personal best — only the smiles and enthusiasm others expressed for him when he ďŹ nished each race. “Always in the run, there’s a moment where you don’t think you can do it. Those thoughts of ‘This is too hard’ come in, but you dig deep in your soul and keep putting one foot in front of the other,â€? Smith said. This advice that gets him through his own struggles during a race has resonated well with the people walking into The Gateway Center, looking for help of their own.
Crossing Paths Ade Olude is the founder of AdeTheVegan Runner.com; he is an Atlanta-based ultra marathoner that has run multiple races of more than 100 miles; he is a former professional soccer player and Olude is currently experiencing homelessness. Even though he has no idea where he will be living next week, or what he will eat each day, he is ďŹ lled with smiles and joy. Why? Olude describes his as a life of total freedom. “Everything people are afraid to lose, I have lost,â€? Olude said. His purpose when running is to raise awareness for the homeless. Olude runs to show others what is possible when life has taken everything comfortable and familiar away from you. He runs to show the world that those without homes are not all drug-addicts and mentally incapacitated. “It is not as difďŹ cult to be homeless as it is to deal with other’s apathy,â€? he relayed with conviction. Olude ďŹ rst crossed paths with Smith a couple of years ago when he walked into The Gateway Center and joined a program called Life Changers.

“I want to get to know the men that are here and let them know we are in it together,” Smith said. “I’ve always said that these are not homeless individuals; they are people that matter who are experiencing homelessness.” As Smith began to learn about Olude’s running and the way in which it encouraged his life, he continued to have personal conversations with him, helping the longdistance runner through a tough patch until he was able to move forward and leave the center. Last month, Smith sent 12 men like Olude — discouraged and empty in spirit — back into their communities with 12 full-time “livable wage jobs.” “We’re all running a journey. We’re all in this together so when somebody needs help along the way, you give them an arm, help get them on their feet and they pick up the pace again,” Smith said. He and Olude, like many before them and those that will find their way after, have merged the running community with their own life purpose, bringing their personal causes to the forefront. The New Goal These men are not celebrities nor did they wait until someone gave them validation to

act. They signed up and ran because they had dedicated themselves to a higher cause of their choice. Regardless of which path we take to get there or why, finding a passion and purpose larger than ourselves can be one of the best motivators for creating change. This year, both men will toe the line several times together in a brand new race series coming to Atlanta next month. For Olude, it’s a warm-up for much longer races on his calendar; for Smith, however, it will be his longest run to date and a new goal for the year. “The Gateway Center is a beneficiary of the Hotlanta Half Marathon, so I’m running my first half with the longterm goal of finishing a marathon distance over the course of the year,” Smith said excitedly. “The ATL Race Series is an exciting new event involving a unique distance,” said Victoria Seahorn, race director for The ATL Race Series and seasoned runner, whose unconventional idea is likely to become a popular new pastime for runners of all abilities. “The quarter marathon is a bit different from the usual 10k, as it is a 6.55mile race,” she said, adding, “The ATL
Race Series allows runners to participate in three different events throughout the year, including the virtual quarter marathon [this spring], the Hotlanta Half Marathon in the summer and the ATL Quarter Marathon in the fall. I think runners will truly enjoy this series as it will keep them motivated throughout the year and enable them to attain that 26.2 mile goal.” Finishers of all three races will receive their ATL Race Series 26.2 medal as they cross the finish line November 15. Seattle THREE DESTINATIONS, TWO MOMS, ONE MEMORABLE TRIP

EWIS AND CLARK we weren’t,
but with itineraries packed tighter than our suitcases, the promise of expeditions in previously chartered territory was just as thrilling. Reconnaissance of three destinations in 72 hours might sound challenging, but as moms typically on the run, we knew how to manage our time and exactly where to stay to make the most of it. Antsy for adventure and stocked with stamina, we set out to see Seattle and two other Washington state escapes.
On the Waterfront A 15-minute drive from Seattle-Tacoma International Airport and a warm welcome were exactly what we needed to kickstart our quest through the Northwest. The first of three boutique properties we would visit within the Destination Hotels Pacific Northwest Collection, The Woodmark Hotel, Yacht Club and Spa sits on the shores of Lake Washington and is the only Seattle-area lakefront lodging available. Here, nautical couches, a fireplace and amazing views of both the city and the Olympic Mountains assist in greeting guests into what immediately feels like a waterfront home.
From the balcony of our wellappointed room, we debated an afternoon of paddle boarding, kayaking or a cruise aboard a private boat reserved just for guests, but ultimately, we decided to bike into the suburban town of Kirkland for lunch and a little shopping. calories to even warrant calling it exercise; however, the ride home could have been tricky balancing too many shopping bags had we let willpower slip away inside Crush, a store specializing in unique and hard-to-find shoes. Back at the hotel with enough time to explore the property’s onsite spa, cozy library and casual Beach Café, we were more than ready for dinner at bin on the lake, where Executive Chef Matthew Steffen graciously spoiled us with incredible Northwest fare. I’d love to be able to recreate his tomato soup with white cheddar and grilled bread and should culinary talent descend just for one day, I also wouldn’t complain about whipping up his S’mores bread pudding with bacon, bourbon anglaise … ahem, and the ricotta doughnut holes with strawberry jam, peanut cream and aged balsamic. A girl can dream is all I’m saying. Thankful for the pampered palate, we left the suburbs of Seattle and headed toward the Cascade Mountains. In the Mountains As the topography changed during our drive, so too, did our dispositions. Less than two hours in the car rarely, if ever, counts as a road trip for Atlantans, but sophisticated are-we-there-yet moments quietly surfaced, due no doubt, to 50

anticipation of all that Suncadia Resort and Lodge, A Destination Hotel, has to offer. Awaiting our arrival was the majestic mountain lodge we would temporarily call home, not to mention miles of biking and hiking trails we would have covered, if not for scheduled treatments at Glade Spring Spa. Located in Cle Elum (a city that few outsiders, ourselves included, can pronounce on the first try), this mountain resort is a haven for families and anyone with the slightest inclination for outdoor activities. For Seattle residents, it’s a quick commute into Mother Nature’s Playground regardless of the season. For us, it was a welcome respite in the woods, where normally we’d opt to run for hours. Instead, we chose to chill. Ready to unwind, we wandered into the mineral springs for a quick dip. Not long after, I sank into my table for the Evergreen Mountain Escape treatment, a head-to-toe organic experience that surpasses most signature massages — largely because of the warmed herbal booties and scalp massage. Relaxed doesn’t begin to describe my demeanor even before I sauntered fireside with champagne in one hand and a good book in the other. It sounds rough, I know, but we earned it. Earlier in the day, we ate a hearty breakfast at Portals, the high-end
restaurant onsite, and donned our warmest duds for a day on the water with Troutwater Fly Fishing, the property’s exclusively contracted outfitter for fly fishing and river rafting excursions. Our expert guide, Johnny Boitano, whisked us from the resort, fit us with waders and the next thing we knew, we were casting for trout. The sun dodged the clouds as often as we recast our flies, but we outran the rain and each of us triumphantly caught two trout. We adjusted nicely to mountain life, venturing later into the neighboring town of Roslyn, once the setting for the 1990s hit television show, “Northern Exposure.” There, we drank craft beer with locals at the town watering hole, better known by some as the world famous Brick Saloon. It was the perfect nightcap to our journey. Sleeping in isn’t an option for many moms, but when said women are sent to the Pacific Northwest for a girls getaway in the mountains, let’s just say the view from our balcony of the 2.2-million acre Wenatchee Washington National Forest proved equally impressive an hour later. Our well-equipped two-room lodge was hard to leave, but city life in Seattle beckoned and so did its coffee shops. Around the City Here’s what everyone already knows about Seattle: it’s a very cool city, you’ll need an umbrella, the seafood is incredible and lattes are liquid works of art. Finally settled in the Emerald City, named for its lush greenery in every direction, we were more than ready to uncover what we didn’t know about Seattle. Since we couldn’t stop time, speeding up was the only option, and Espresso Vivace did not disappoint. Another favorite we discovered, Slate Coffee Bar, serves deconstructed espressos in wine glasses but requires an extended detour and a fair amount of good vision to find. Our caffeine kick combined with the incredible convenience of Motif, our third Destination Hotel experience, nestled right

in the heart of the city’s energy and culture couldn’t have been more perfect. The striking upscale property, located on Fifth Avenue between Pike and Union Streets is perched with prime access to many of Seattle’s landmarks and has the largest outdoor deck in all of downtown. Pike Place Market is easy to identify, thanks to its iconic sign. So too, is Pioneer Square, where the original Starbucks coffee shop resides — this fact we didn’t know until we saw a never-ending line down the sidewalk and a bunch of people snapping photos. Hands free of recycled cups, 52

we shopped with little inhibition in Pike Place Market, where we tried anything and everything made with lavender — tea, lotion, skin balm, cookies, ice cream — as well as in many fashion-forward shops like Alhambra. In true journalistic style, we pulled up a stool for a necessary lunch of clam chowder and seafood tacos. Topping our list of places to see was the amazing work of Dale Chihuly. Located next to Seattle’s famous Space Needle, Chihuly Garden and Glass is packed with brightly colored blown glass pieces promising to take your breath away and leave
you wondering how in the world he and his team did that. Throughout the exhibition are details about how he started, how he has led the avant-garde in the development of glass as a fine art and plenty of visual proof why his work is included in more than 200 museum collections worldwide. We opted for the audio tour, slowing down long enough to mosey through each of the eight galleries, the lush Garden and the Glasshouse, which is, as it should be, the centerpiece of the exhibition. With a Seattle City Pass, the options were endless … should we pop into the Pacific Science Center, view the city from atop the Space Needle or explore the EMP Museum at Seattle Center? EMP, which stands for Experience Music Project, provides locals and guests alike with fascinating exhibits like “Star Wars and the Power of Costumes,” which gives a behind-the-scenes peek at some of the most iconic costumes in film history, music exhibits featuring rare memorabilia owned by Jimi Hendrix, one of Seattle’s favorite sons, and plenty more to keep curious minds entertained for hours. Housed in a 140,000-square-foot building designed by Frank O. Gehry, the EMP Museum was most tempting, but then again, when the sun is out in Seattle, it’s simply too hard to go indoors. For dinner, we headed to Frolik Kitchen + Cocktails located on the fifth floor of our happening hotel. Amidst its vibrant décor and electric energy, we sipped craft cocktails and enjoyed a final fabulous meal, followed by more drinks outside in front of the über hip fireplace on the expansive deck overlooking the city. Life is so good in Seattle, even moms on the run can’t help but stop and smell the flowers, even if they are glass. PN

above the country’s second largest urban waterfall is not what I initially envisioned for our mother/daughter adventure, but it proved to be a fortuitous stop nonetheless. Each time the Skyride hovered while more onlookers boarded, I realized that unlike the rushing rapids below us, I had finally slowed down to enjoy a vacation. While there’s something to be said for destinations within driving distance, every once in a while, my inner explorer begs to let loose. We set our sights on Spokane, Wash., and after four fabulous days of

roaming the city’s best shops, restaurants and wineries, I couldn’t imagine going anywhere else. A River Runs through It A hidden gem situated on the Spokane River, Spokane is tucked into eastern Washington, approximately 20 miles from the

border of Idaho and less than four hours east of Seattle. After hosting the World’s Fair in 1974, the city transformed the fairgrounds into its highly popular 100-acre Riverfront Park, where the SkyRide, twice ranked among the world’s top 15 gondola rides by Conde Nast Traveler, carries locals and visitors alike across the falls from high above the gorge. Another haven of happiness resides a quick drive from downtown through Spokane’s Victorian-style South Hill neighborhood to Manito Park and Botanical Gardens. Nestled inside this expansive park are five gardens, a greenhouse conservatory

and the impressive Nishinomiya Japanese Garden. With the sun setting behind the Japanese sculptures and traditional bonsailooking trees, we followed a pebble path as it guided us around a beautiful pond and cozy coves perfect for pondering life. At the time, we were much more interested in fulfilling our appetites and Luna, a beloved bistro among Spokane residents, awaited. The bustling restaurant, where friends and family convene over fine wine and fabulous food, believes in living deliciously and nowhere was this more apparent than my spaghetti made with kale pesto, house bacon, portabella, sundried
tomatoes, asparagus and pistachios. With our first glass of wine from Washington’s Walla Walla Valley in hand, our expedition in the Inland Northwest quickly evolved into a food and wine pattern we honestly didn’t even try to break. Generations of Grandeur As much as we loved Luna — everyone loves Luna — the next best thing to culinary creativity is sleeping at a legendary locale. Best known as Spokane’s living room since 1914, the Spanish Renaissancestyled lobby inside the Historic Davenport Hotel is nothing short of stunning. Named
for its proprietor, Louis Davenport, Spokane’s grandest hotel has its own walking tour during which guests can architecturally visit Italy, France, England, Spain and Imperial Russia. the only flying ballroom in the world, gets my vote purely for the logistics necessary to construct the masterpiece in one place and then move it — intact — by crane into the hotel. Of course, a glass of champagne after a heavenly spa treatment inside the Forbes Four-Star Davenport Spa only added to our attachment. Narrowly saved from demolition, The Davenport Hotel was spared by Walt and Karen Worthy and is now part of The Davenport Collection, along with the Davenport Tower, Hotel Lusso and the highly anticipated Davenport Grand Hotel opening late spring. Of Grapes and Growlers Two reasons to visit Spokane are The Cork District and The Inland Northwest Ale Trail. Washington state is one of the American wine industry’s heavy hitters — ranking as the second largest premium wine producer in the country, with more than 850 wineries and wine regions ranked among the world’s finest — and is well on its way to becoming a getaway for wine enthusiasts. Staying at the Davenport provides proximity to several of the wineries in The Cork District. Among the most convenient are Cougar Crest, Whitestone Winery and Patit Creek, all with tasting rooms in the same block as the hotel. Spokane is easy to navigate and very walkable, so we earned our sips at Barrister Winery and then cruised further afield to Arbor Crest Wine Cellars. Though this winery has an in-town tasting room, go for the short drive — the view from the Cliff House Tasting Room is worth it. Veering back downtown, we ventured into Overbluff Cellars. Once owned by Jerry Gibson who now focuses his time and talent as the winemaker, Overbluff Cellars specializes in big wines. Intense, complex
and sustainable, these wines reflect the passion of Gibson, who never ceases to draw a crowd, due in part to his wine knowledge and the rest to his irresistible personality. Ready to share stories and sizable pours, Gibson is onsite often, which makes the experience even more memorable. We left with several bottles of wine in hand and a signed stave from one of the barrels. Wine isn’t the only libation landing Spokane on the map and after sufficiently hydrating for a day, we put a stopper in the wine tour and ambled along the Inland Northwest Ale Trail. Had we followed the Ale Trail Map to 10 of the participating craft breweries, we could have earned a growler to call our own, but a cold pint served us just as well. No-Li Brewhouse, situated right on the banks of the Spokane River, proved to be the perfect place to start. The internationally award-winning brewery prides itself on innovative beers made in Spokane by locals, using ingredients sourced from within 300 miles of the city. As a girl who loves dark and delicious craft beer, I ordered the Wrecking Ball Imperial Stout and anxious awaited its promise of coffee, chocolate and brown sugar. Meanwhile, Stacks at the Steam Plant might not have the familiar pub ring, but the dual smokestack building that once provided heat to most of downtown now supplies necessity in the form of surprisingly good bites, a fun tour and plenty of good brews. The Culinary Trail While no one left breadcrumbs for us to follow along a bonafide culinary trail, all roads led to a fine meal regardless of which direction we went. Walking around hungry or thirsty in Spokane is like not being able to find sweet tea in the South — it just doesn’t happen. Between wine stops, we lunched at

Betting on a completely different scene, we drove to the suburbs just outside of Spokane for dinner at Masselow’s, a Forbes Four-Star and AAA Four-Diamond award-winning restaurant inside Northern Quest Resort and Casino. While I’m normally unlucky at casinos, in the hands of Executive Chef Bob Rodgers, we left feeling as fortunate — and full — as one could hope. The food, inspired by the local Kalispel Tribe and regionally sourced, was well worth the detour. The following day we found ourselves back in the neighborhood of South Hill. Casper Fry was a Baptist Minister whose church stands across the street from what is now a restaurant by the same name with his great, great grandson at the helm. Inside the innovative space, which has one of only 13 solid fuel-burning Josper ovens in the country, classic Southern-inspired American dishes grace the menu with a modern approach. As the owner shared why she buys Mill’s Farm Red Mule grits only from Athens, I realized that while Spokane’s beauty initially draws travelers to visit, once here, guests are treated like friends by locals eager to sit and experience the best of their city right along with you. W
inter and I have an under-
standing. I love the winter holidays, adore the fi rst few times I can bundle up in my winter coat and warm scarf and cannot get enough of beautiful sweaters. The first time I see my breath is magical. The second and third times drastically lose their luster. When the cold season hits and the kids are stuck inside, my cozy (alright, small) house seems to shrink. My dreams of a playroom where I can shut the door and hide the clutter becomes a very detailed plan of exactly which walls to knock down and how to soundproof the house. Then, as if Mother Nature has a plan of her own, the sun starts to shine a little brighter,
the temperatures start to rise and the inside voices — for all of us — are finally unleashed outside. Our back yard magically increases the square footage of our home, bringing the desire of a playroom to life. Toys can be sprinkled here and there without fear of tripping en route to the kitchen. Yelling and running are not only allowed, they are encouraged. Our yard, like most, is a blank canvas begging to create new memories. Meccas for Moms and Dads In my household, I do the majority of the indoor cooking and my husband handles the grill. Rising temperatures mean I am released of dinner duty and he can tame the flames to deliver perfectly charred steaks, flavorful skewers full of shrimp and vegetables and even the occasional grilled dessert. No matter who holds the spatula, outdoor cooking is definitely on the rise. While most of us own a freestanding grill, the real trend is creating a fully functional outside kitchen. “People are beginning to mold their outdoor space into an [expansive] living area creating an extension of their home,” said David Esau of North Atlanta Fireplace. Outdoor kitchens can be quite stylish and the price points can vary drastically. The market includes weatherproof cabinets and the appliances run the gamut from refrigeration to deep fryers. Companies are also diversifying when it comes to cooking styles. 60

Want the taste of charcoal, but the ease of cooking on gas? Check out charcoal trays, which enable home chefs to accomplish exactly that. When it comes to prep space, consider either a mobile island configuration using casters or take your time building the outdoor kitchen of your dreams by using component-based products. As your budget increases, you can easily add on that new sear burner or work in some infrared cooking products. Add music and an outdoor television and your family has the ideal hotspot to watch the game while cooking your own game day food. Of course, if your idea of an oasis brings to mind a sense of calm and relaxation, the best addition to your yard might be a water feature. “A water garden, whatever the size or style, can add a soothing quality, delightful sound effects, a sense of whimsy and, on even the hottest days, it can create the illusion of some coolness,” said Erica Glasener, former HGTV star and current marketing manager

for Gibbs Gardens, located 60 miles north of Atlanta in Ball Ground. Glasener shared that the best way to incorporate a water garden into your yard is to use it to complement your house and garden. It’s important to note that water features come in all sizes, shapes and styles. A small dish with floating flowers could be an optimal water feature for a small yard, while a bird bath might be a better choice for tighter areas. Those with bigger yards (and larger budgets) might consider a more complex feature, perhaps a waterfall or lily pond. When stumped on what to do, Glasener said, “Take cues from nature.” In other words, before you decide on anything, make sure to look around your area and answer a few questions: What rocks and stones are abundant? How does water flow into this area? What types of plants and flowers seem to thrive in places with water? The more you can incorporate local materials into your water feature, the more you’ll create a finished and natural look.
They Want it All A perfectly grilled dinner served al fresco while listening to the calming sounds of a beautiful water garden sounds like the perfect outdoor oasis … unless you are 5 years old. Let’s face it: the back yard does not constitute a sense of zen for the little ones; it’s a green light for fun and adventure. The metal swing sets that were installed via posthole diggers and concrete are a thing of the past and as a mom, I can admit to being completely overwhelmed by today’s options. Arthur Sweetland of Sweetland Outdoors stressed the importance of safety and emphasized that play structures are as varied in price as they are in features. If the adage, “You get what you pay for” comes to mind, be sure to keep it there. When looking for a safer product, Sweetland pointed to three main components: the wood type (cedar is a great option), larger bolts and bigger, wider boards. Some of the less expensive units do not hold up and can create safety hazards. “These are your kids, so if you aren’t quite ready to spend the money, save and invest in the right product down the road,” Sweetland said, adding, “These play structures are a long term investment.” In terms of the long haul, both Sweetland and Al Adkisson, of Superior Play Systems mentioned the importance of buying a product that can grow with your kids. Adkisson said he’s noticed a lot of people these days are buying play structures with higher rooflines and more headroom. This makes the forts a space that the kids and their parents can share. He also mentioned that another great backyard option that can be enjoyed by parents and kids alike is a sports court. “A multi-purpose sport court is the perfect place for parents to have some unplugged time with their kids as they grow,” he relayed.

I asked my daughter what her preference would be and it came as no surprise that my bundle of perpetual energy would request a trampoline. The thought of her springing even higher than normal gave me heart palpitations, but thankfully, Sweetland once again addressed the safety features. His recommendation is not to buy a trampoline without researching “the safety net design.” At Sweetland Outdoors, they use a frame made in the States and underscored how important the location of the net and the netting material is. A net with wide spaces is actually more of an enticement to climb, increasing risk of harm. Also, be sure to look at the warranty and the weight rating, remembering both of these factors have a direct implication on overall safety. At the end of the day, the ideal back yard is an opportunity to celebrate time together. As we head into warmer weather, here’s hoping you’ll channel the advice of the late Robin Williams who said, “Spring is nature’s way of saying ‘Let’s party!’” PN
