contest, considering a number of factors that make a photo cover-worthy, and reading each and every comment posted to our Facebook page. And this year, we decided to dig even deeper, uncovering the stories behind our finalists. The wedding day memories poured forth. Libby Simonds Chamber recalled her mother presenting her with a beautiful Tiffany pearl bracelet shortly before she walked down the aisle. Camila Rivera Garwicki described her reaction to the rain and how she ended up soaking wet but at peace with her wedding day weather. And Tara Bridges Eibe laughed at the memory of a photography intern crouching behind her to hold up her dress as she tried to appear serious and sophisticated for the camera. To see these photos for yourself, visit the gallery section of our new website, pointsnorthatlanta.com, and flip to page 20 to read about our winner and runners-up. After all, a picture might be worth a thousand words — but the words tell some pretty interesting tales, too.

you’ll see a happy couple eager to begin their lives together. You’ll see a picturesque venue in the North Georgia mountains, a gorgeous diamond-white wedding dress (if I do say so myself), bouquets in vibrant fall colors, and a lot of dancing. When I look at my wedding pictures, I see all of this and more. I see a torrential downpour that couldn’t rain on my happiness. (Though it did ruin the shoes of a few of my guests!) I see the butterflies in my stomach as I waited for my dad to escort me down the aisle. I see the two raccoons who watched over our ceremony from the rafters above. The photos paint a beautiful picture of my wedding day, but for me, they bring it to life again — all the emotions, all the details, everything that took place off-camera. This is why photography is arguably the most important element of wedding planning. Not only do pictures preserve the memories of the images they capture, but also the stories behind them. Choosing a cover for our annual wedding issue has become a highly anticipated event here at Points North. For the second year in a row, we painstakingly perused countless submissions for our photo

with celebrity weddng planner David Tutera, host of WeTV’s “My Fair Wedding.” Before you attend the Bridal Extravaganza of Atlanta on Feb. 2 at The Atlanta Convention Center at AmericasMart, read on for a little insight from the wedding planning guru himself.

& QA

WITH DAVID TUTERA

How did you get started as a wedding planner? My inspiration originally came from my grandfather, who was in the floral business. While in his shop, I developed an eye for flowers and design. Branching out on my own, I started small with window displays, which then led to tablescapes and then to full-scale room decor for clients. I have always believed in dreaming bigger! What color trends do you see for 2013? For colors, I see neutrals punched up with shades of pinks, oranges and purples. I think this will keep in line with the return to “traditional” that we’ve been seeing, but with a pop of personality — and I personally love this route! How can a bride integrate technology into her wedding? I really like this question! Technology is clearly everywhere, and has definitely saturated the wedding world as well. Prior to their wedding, brides can use this to their advantage with planning mobile apps, by keeping electronic versions of their guest list and contracts and by utilizing dedicated websites for finding inspiration, creating their wedding webpage, doing their bridal registry and more. At the wedding, brides might find technical upgrades to lighting, photography, videography and sound advantageous to creating a fabulous mood at the event [as well as] preserving the memories long after. One of the coolest uses I’ve seen lately was a couple that featured an iPad at the escort table that guests could scroll through to find their table assignments! In which three areas can brides save money or DIY? I always tell my brides that there is a way to scale back on every element of the wedding. For that reason, it’s important to first prioritize your list and focus [both] your time and budget on the parts that are most important to the couple. As you work your way down the list, you can come up with creative solutions to save money in each category. If fashion is not at the top of your list, let your hair down and add some great party jewels to your dress for your reception instead of springing for two different gowns. If florals are not your thing, make a centerpiece with a variety of candles and add only a few florals. What are three ideas that brides can use to make their day memorable? There is one answer: personality! A wedding that’s infused with the couple’s traditions, customs, hobbies and personal interests is one that is sure to be unique. I always say that a wedding should tell a story, and that tale should be all about the couple. Every wedding element, from the florals to the cake, is an opportunity to add personality. Photography is

truly an amazing thing. Not only does it capture a moment in time, a good photo can bring that moment back to life. In the case of wedding photography, a good photo can bring an entire day back to life — all the emotions, all the details, everything that took place off-camera as two people began their lives together. Here, we’re proud to present the winner and runners-up from our second annual wedding issue cover contest — and the moments they bring to life for their brides.

BEFORE SHE BOOKED THE VENUE AND CHOSE THE DRESS — even before she met her now husband — Allison Holmes Chapman had chosen a song for her reception. “About 7 years ago, my family and I took a cruise for our family vacation celebrating my parents 20th anniversary. One night we went to karaoke and my brother sang ‘Baby I’m Amazed’ in front of the whole crowd … Even though, at the time, I didn’t have a boyfriend, I was determined that my brother would sing this song [at my wedding],” she said. When her big day finally did roll around, she wondered if he would remember her special request. “That night during the reception, my brother got the microphone and said he wanted to dedicate a song to me and my new husband … I was so surprised and so happy. His voice was amazing — he had the whole crowd crying, even me!”

WE LOVE THE OVERALL EMOTION IN THIS PHOTO, with the bride, quite literally, being swept off her feet, but what really won us over was her shoes. “When I found the ‘I Do’ stickers for my wedding heels while shopping for DIY crafts, I knew I just had to have them,” Nicole Norman said. “Not only were they the perfect personal embellishment for our special day, but they incorporated the ‘something blue’ tradition into our ceremony in an unexpected way and served as a fun and special reminder of our marriage vows.” But the stickers nearly got lost in all the hustle and bustle of the big day, and shortly before show time, Norman realized she’d forgotten to apply them. “My sweet mother went on a speedy wild-goose-chase across the property to track them down, fish them out, and deliver to the blushing bride,” she recalled. “She knew how important they were to me and made quite the heroic effort to ensure my wedding day was everything I dreamed it would be and more.”

IT’S EASY FOR A BRIDE TO GET CAUGHT UP IN A WHIRLWIND OF ACTIVITY and forget to take a moment to enjoy herself. Thanks to her father, Keri Miers Brunner’s favorite memory from her wedding day forced her to do just that. “When my dad was doing the welcome speech at the beginning of the reception, he told Shawn and me to look around the room at all of our guests who traveled to celebrate our special day,” she said. “It allowed us both to really soak in the moment and think about all of our friends and family who mean so much to us.” “My husband says the whole afternoon and evening blended into one special moment for him, from our outdoor ceremony to the excitement and dancing at the reception,” she continued. “He thoroughly enjoyed being with loved ones and says the entire day was the ‘best day of his life.’ I like to say best day of his life so far.”

ou’ve lived through prom — it was years ago, your jaw muscles have relaxed and maybe you’re actually trying to forget about it — but if you’re a bride, you know better. The big day is around the corner and the need to be photogenic has never, ever been greater. It’s not just practicing a picture-perfect grin for the big moment — now, you’ve got to document the engagement process before you don the dress, and potentially promote these photos for the rest of your lives. The ultimate question: Is it for you? Metro-Atlanta photographers (and me, a once-bride and photo lover) say yes! But what the heck are you going to wear? Why should you take them at all? What will you do with those pictures? And what if you’re not creative or photogenic in the least? Fortunately, some of the best in the industry have the answers to sway your thoughts toward a pre-wedding day photo shoot and make them some of the best snapshots you’ve ever seen. First and foremost, you may be wondering what is the point of an engagement shoot. Other than a snazzy headshot for your mom to put in the paper, why would you ever want glamour shots of you and your honey? “Having an engagement session is a fun, relaxing way to enjoy a special time in your lives before the wedding, without the stress of the wedding day,” said Atlanta photographer Jessica Layne from

The Collection. “It’s also an excellent opportunity to meet your photographers and get to know them and their style. It makes photography on the wedding day much more relaxing!” As a recent bride myself, I can absolutely attest to that. My (now) husband and I are not good “posers,” so I was worried the big day shots would look forced. But with a few hours getting warmed up to our photographer, we relaxed and knew what to expect and how to ignore the camera. End result? We love our engagement pictures! “Traditionally couples would have an engagement party to announce to their friends and family that they are officially a couple and will be married. An engagement session is much the same thing, just done photographically,” added Pam Jones of Paris Mountain Photography. “It’s a great way to show off how much a couple loves each other in a creative way.” You’re sold, right? The next question is where? And, of course, what should you wear? “Wear something that you’re comfortable in, something that you both like and that looks good on you two together. Go with your style,” suggested Atlanta newcomer Claudia McDade of Claudia McDade Photography. For example, I have blue eyes and my hubby has dark features. We know we look good in reds and blues, so we brought several options and got feedback on what looked best through the lens.

As for location, Jenn Linke, owner of The Decisive Moment Photography, suggests picking a place that is meaningful to you both. “Perhaps you guys have a favorite date spot? A favorite activity? Pick something that reflects you!” she said. “Are you casual and laid back? Head to your favorite park. Do you love fashion and city life? Try an urban setting with backgrounds that reflect that. Just remember that wherever you pick, the most important aspect is you! At the end of the day, the location is just an added detail and the focus should be the couple.” “The best advice I can give is to act like you are on a date with your honey and that you two are the only ones around,” said Andie Freeman of Andie Freeman Photography. “Always keep moving and trying new things. Some things won’t work, but you would be surprised at what ends up turning out well.” McDade agreed, adding, “Be yourselves and have fun with it! It’s not every day that you get to spend two hours together doing nothing but staring into each other’s eyes, holding hands, hugging, kissing and being super sweet to each other. So take advantage of that time!” Of course great pictures will be fun to look at forever, but what can you really do with gobs of gorgeous shots of yourself? If you didn’t end up with a photo booth for a living room, our pros have usable, practical and creative ways to put those money shots to work (see sidebar on previous page). “This is your first family portrait!” Linke reminded us. “This is the beginning of a new life, your new family. Take a picture of the beginning because the next portrait session will most likely include a baby and then maybe two!” Who knows? Maybe your future as a Covergirl (or guy) is just waiting for a moment to emerge! “I was getting discouraged and worried that I would never find the perfect dress,” Johnson remarked. “And then one day when I was driving through Roswell, I just happened to see the sign for Taylor Clarke Bridals.” Johnson and her mother met with owners Cheryl Taylor and Laurie Clarke in the first-floor showroom of the historic Perry House, a space Johnson describes as “just girly and wonderful.”

“We talked for a little while, and Cheryl pulled out a pen and started sketching dresses on a drawing pad and things started to get exciting,” she recalled. “She pulled a couple of dresses from the racks, and I tried them on and fell in love instantly.” But Johnson’s story doesn’t end there. Taylor Clarke Bridals is not a retail shop, and so the owners do not sell dresses from the pages of catalogs or the racks of their bridal boutique. Instead, Taylor designs and

creates one-of-a-kind wedding gowns for customers based on each bride’s preferences and personality. All of her designs are unique works of wearable art. “My dress is perfect for me — a vintage design featuring elegant, ivory, hand-embroidered French lace over pure silk taffeta,” Johnson said. “The bodice and train are embellished with hand beading. I’ve always loved butterflies, and so three handcrafted lace butterflies are sewn to the back of the skirt — a

British aristocracy, as well as prominent socialites. Her gowns have been worn at Buckingham Palace and prestigious manor houses and hotels throughout the world. “I don’t copy other designs,â€? said Taylor, who has designed and tailored clothing off and on for more than 30 years — longer, if you count the clothes she created for her Barbie dolls. “Every bride is different, and since each dress design should reect the bride’s distinctive personality, every wedding gown should be different, too.â€? The process of building the perfect dress starts with an hour-long consultation that consists of lots of conversation, taking 30 measurements of the bride’s body, and discussing display dresses. Next, Taylor composes illustrations of her design concept, and everyone involved discusses the design. After the consultation, Taylor prepares a detailed pattern and makes a muslin toile for the bride to try on. “The toile ensures a perfect ďŹ t and allows us to make certain that all of the design elements work together,â€? Taylor said. “We make any necessary adjustments on the toile mock-up before we move forward.â€? Only then are the luxurious silks and lavish laces, both vintage and modern, cut and assembled by hand using haute couture techniques. Taylor and Clarke wait until just a few weeks before the bride’s big day to complete the dress. “This is because most brides lose weight in the weeks before their wedding, so we wait a little while before the ďŹ nal stitching,â€? Taylor said. “This ensures an impeccable ďŹ t.â€? While Taylor is working her magic with the design and ďŹ t of each dress, business partner Clarke prepares the exquisite embellishments that complement each gown. Taylor and Clarke also make acces-

on the gowns. I’ve hand-embroidered thousands of beads on our wedding gowns myself.” Their designs are both functional and fabulous. Some dresses incorporate a boned bustier — a popular feature that can reduce the bride’s waist size by as much as two inches. Other gowns showcase a novel, two-in-one design. These in vogue, convertible wedding gowns are easily transformed by simply adding a belt, changing a headdress or pinning up the skirt, so the bride can achieve a different look for her wedding reception or send off. And Taylor Clarke accommodates brides who have heirloom dresses they want to revive or incorporate into more modern designs. Stitch-by-stitch, they carefully disassemble the older dress and have the pieces professionally cleaned. “In the new design, we utilize all or most of what we reclaimed from the heirloom dress,” Clarke said.

“And we build a dress with a modern, chic silhouette using the vintage fabrics and laces.â€? The end result is a unique, vintage-inspired, contemporary gown that transforms the bride both physically and emotionally. “For most brides, the weeks leading up to the wedding ceremony are of spiritual growth, and we are honored to be part of that process,â€? Clarke said. “We become friends with each and every bride and are kind of sad when the wedding is over.â€? Newlywed Kate Johnson echoed Clarke’s sentiment, saying her relationship with Taylor and Clarke evolved into much more than a simple business afďŹ liation. “They became dear friends of mine,â€? Johnson said. “And when Jeff and I got

IF A CUSTOM-DESIGNED DRESS DOESN’T FIT YOUR budget, you can still opt for originality. Owned by Maria Sullivan, I Do and I’m Done bridal boutique is an upscale consignment shop specializing in vintage wedding gowns and accessories. From the showy, beaded tunics of the Roaring ‘20s to more glamorous, Hollywood-inspired designs of the ‘50s to the frilly, flowing skirts of the ‘70s, Sullivan’s showroom in historic Roswell brims with dozens of gently-worn and never-worn wedding dresses from yesteryear in an array of sizes and prices. “We cater to brides who prefer vintage wear,” Sullivan said. “Many of our customers are a bit non-traditional. They have their own unique style and want a different wedding experience than everyone else.” Since the dresses are on-site and two full-service seamstresses are available to alter and modify them, Sullivan’s shop is a godsend for brides planning a wedding within a short time frame. Indeed, I Do and I’m Done boasts an impressive two-week turn-around on wedding gowns. The prices are fabulous, with most dresses selling for 50 to 70 percent off of retail, and a portion of the proceeds of the sales go to seven local charities. “I think that we are one of the most green bridal shops in the Atlanta area,” Sullivan remarked. “Our dresses and accessories are truly recycled, revamped, and reused — what’s old becomes new and spectacular again. And we are proud to partner with SCAD. The students there are breathing new life into some of our dresses by restyling them and giving the classic fashions a more modern translation.” I Do and I’m Done also offers a beautiful array of contemporary gowns, bridesmaids dresses, flower girl dresses, and mother of the bride dresses, too. 43 Park Square, Roswell, 678-218-3663, idoandimdone.com

Destinations For THE BREAKERS:

nce upon a time, a boy and a girl fell in love and decided to get married. He wanted a Caribbean wedding — palm trees, sparkling water, tropical vibes and a reggae beat. She wanted a majestic wedding, in Europe perhaps — dripping in Old-World elegance — a palatial venue with frescoed ceilings, crystal chandeliers and a string quartet. The couple loved each other very much, yet their wedding visions were as different as night and day. One day the girl was sitting at her computer, searching again for that magical destination that would somehow combine their two dreams into one. Suddenly her Fairy Godmother appeared. She gently took the mouse from the girl’s hand and clicked on a website. Everything the girl had ever dreamed of appeared right before her eyes — ballrooms with checkered marble dance floors, balconies and balustrades, gilded ceilings with carved cherubs smiling down. And for him, there were photographs of palm trees swaying beside an aquamarine sea and white-crested waves breaking softly on a sandy shore. Here, the perfect venue for the perfect wedding revealed itself like a dream. Where in the world could this perfect place could be? The Breakers in Palm Beach, Florida.

to fit the theme, and what time of year [the wedding is planned determines] what kind of fish we can get.” One of Simms’ specialties is the crab trio: she-crab soup, crab cake and crabsalad served in avocado halves. Another trend he shares is the individual raw bar — a small ice carving is presented to each guest with delicious mounds of fresh stone crab, lobster, shrimp and caviar.

HAND IN HAND IN PARADISE This fairy tale is only partially true, but I can assure you that The Breakers Palm Beach is truly everything you could ever fantasize about a wedding destination and more. I arrived at The Breakers, not as a blushing young bride-to-be, but hand in hand with Peter, my husband of more than 20 years. We had come for a romantic escape from the ordinary, everyday routine and to explore this historic resort, consistently rated one of the world’s top choices for destination weddings. One look at the majestic resort rising up against the eastern sky assured me that this is a place where dreams come true. At first the resort’s Italian Renaissance architectural style seems incongruous with its oceanside setting, but soon the two concepts meld into one, a natural symbiosis. Inside the vibe is elegant and Old World. Outside it’s casual and carefree. From our elegantly appointed room overlooking the Atlantic, we headed straight to The Beach Club, which features

five pools, and settled underneath palm fronds that rustled in the breeze like a soft lullaby. The magic continued that night as we dined at The Flagler Steakhouse, which sits at the edge of one of The Breakers’ four golf courses. We dined al fresco on the restaurant’s verandah as romantic jazz played in the background. MAKING THE MENU MEMORABLE Food is, of course, a major component of planning the perfect wedding, and the next day I met Jeff Simms, The Breakers’ executive chef of banquets, who is in charge of all the details that create the perfect destination wedding. “It’s about giving the client choices,” Simms said. Together with the resort’s 30 chefs and sous chefs, Simms has a multitude of resources to help the bride and groom plan their menus. “We like to have three events: rehearsal dinner, sit-down dinner and a Sunday brunch,” he explained, noting that menu planning can take months. “The food has

STORYBOOK SETTINGS Wedding venues abound at The Breakers — 10 of them — that can accommodate from 25 to 800 guests. During a peek at some of these, we also learned the history of The Breakers, built by Henry Flagler, who earned his wealth as a partner in John D. Rockefeller’s Standard Oil Company. Flagler, a colorful character with three wives, saw Florida’s potential as a playground for New York’s elite and built a string of hotels along the coast in the late 1800s as the railroad he owned journeyed further southward. He fell in love with Palm Beach, a picturesque spot where locals planted hundreds of coconuts found in a Spanish shipwreck. The tall majestic palms that grew along its shores gave this picturesque city its name. Flagler built a 2,000-room hotel on Lake Worth about a mile inland from the Atlantic and a smaller overflow inn by the beach. Guests began to request accommodations by “the breakers,” and the name stuck. The original hotel burned down, and Flagler decided to rebuild near the ocean. The current version of The Breakers was

Whether you’re planning a fairy-tale wedding in a faraway land or looking for something right here in the Southeast, there are plenty of venues ready and waiting to host the destination wedding of your dreams. To find the best love-laced locations, we spoke to travel expert Martha Gaughen, vice president of Brownell Travel in Buckhead, which specializes in luxury travel across the globe. Following are a few of her swoon-worthy suggestions. THE RUINS AT BARNSLEY GARDENS, Adairsville, Ga. Built on a foundation of romance (the estate was constructed by Godfrey Barnsley in the 1800s for the love of his life, Julia), this North Georgia resort is the perfect place for your own love story to begin. Say “I Do” under the stars in the storybook setting of the historic ruins, or any of Barnsley’s magical venues (like the Fairy Godmother’s Garden). barnsleyresort.com/meet/weddings/weddings.asp continued on page 50

THE RITZ CARLTON LODGE AT REYNOLDS PLANTATION, Greensboro, Ga. “The Ritz is ideal for those wishing to impress their guests with Southern hospitality and a beautiful country landscape and lake setting,” Gaughen said. The resort seeps rustic elegance at every corner and hosts lavish affairs on the Lakeside Lawn, the torchlit Landing with panoramic lake views, or the newest venue option, the Sandy Creek Barn, a fully restored wood-beam barn dating back to the 1820s. ritzcarlton.com/en/Properties/ReynoldsPlantation/ Events/Weddings/Default.htm THE RITZ-CARLTON LODGE PHOTO COURTESY OF THE RITZ-CARLTON LODGE, REYNOLDS PLANTATION THE RUINS AT BARNSLEY GARDENS PHOTO COURTESY OF LIZ ERIKSON

built in 1925 and features fresco work by 73 artists from Florence. Later we wandered through some of the ballrooms, marveling at the opulent dĂŠcor complete with carved wooden doors, massive ďŹ replaces, brocade drapes, even checkerboard marble oors. Outside venues are also popular, particularly the Ocean Lawn, a lush circle of manicured green grass overlooking the ocean, and the Ocean Terrace. This second-story venue, which has stunning views of both the beaches and the resort, reminds me of a storybook castle and could be transformed into any setting a bride would want.

Raise a Toast to the Bride-to-Be. Listen up maids of honor — when planning the bridal shower or bachelorette party, bring the fun to your doorstep by hosting an in-home wine tasting with local vino expert Jolan Turkington. With a wealth of knowledge and laid-back demeanor, Turkington tailors each tasting to your preferences and the size of your party, and can even suggest food pairings or incorporate games. Basic tastings start at $250 for up to 12 guests. For details, email jolan.nevada@gmail.com or call 202-841-6041.

Sew in Something Blue. No bride would dare walk down the aisle without something old, new, borrowed and blue, but how to incorporate those traditional items? We suggest stitching your “something blue” inside your gown with an elegant label by Points North’s own Shannah J. Smith. The squares, available in four shades of blue, are $20 and can be personalized with your name and wedding date. Be sure to plan in advance, as production takes 1 week after approval. Order online at shannahjsmith.etsy.com.
