of overlapping instants. In his physics of words the most important function is verb tense. The present conjures the past, the remote past floods the future. The grammar of time lets him build tiers of memory, slabs of things and moments, while he seeks his own place among the layers. He shares with Dante a passion for the geometry of vision and for a way of walking through or pausing in concentric figures of place and time. It’s there, in the scansion of the moment, that the energies of mind and imagination fuse with energies radiating from the phenomenal world.
