What a ride 2015!!!

Myah Katzenberger went solo in 2015 and accomplished many goals even though she was eligible for one more year in Leadline.

One of the most memorable events Myah rode J-N Justa Gold Rush in was the Midwest Performance Pony Challenge at the Midwest Regional held in Madison, WI, in August.

Myah was the youngest rider and wowed us with her reining pattern; placing 5th and 7th out of 18 riders under two of the three judges. Myah also placed 5th in the Texas Rollback competition at the Midwest Performance Pony Challenge.

In Wisconsin Year Ends, Myah, brought home the Gibson Challenge Award riding just Rush and accumulating the most points. She also won The One Pony/One Rider Non-Timed Events Highpoint, The One Pony/One Rider Timed Events, the Equitation High Point, One Pony/One Rider High Point for 9 & Under, The Checota Fox Memorial Trophy and The Sheza Tough Tootsie Memorial Traveling Trophy.

In Illinois Year Ends, Myah was Reserve One Pony/One Rider 9 & Under Girls High Point.

In Minnesota Year Ends, Myah was Reserve Champion in 9 & Under Non-Timed One Pony/ One Rider, Champion in 9 & Under Timed One Pony/One Rider, and Champion in 9 & Under One Pony/One Rider. Myah also won The Leonard Lewis Memorial Timed Traveling Trophy and The Gordon Krueger Memorial Black Swan S Ultimate Pony Traveling Trophy which are both 18 & Under awards.

In POAC, Myah and J-N Justa Gold Rush placed 1st in Small Geldings, 1st Costume 18 & Under, and Most Colorful and 5th in the Top Ten in the Nation. Myah had Reserve placings in Hunter Under Saddle and Timed Events for 9 & Under.

It was an impressive year for Myah riding as a six year old competing in her first year of 9 & Under with her 25 year old POA. Jase Katzenberger had a very successful year on a five year old mare. Jase chose to ride J-N Tobe Gorgeous or “Jessie” as he named her after watching her birth.

In Wisconsin Year Ends, Jase and Jessie placed 4th in Non Timed Events for 10-13, 1st in Timed Events, and 2nd in One Pony/One Rider and was Reserve in The Gibson Challenge Award.

In Illinois, Jase and J-N Tobe Gorgeous placed High Point One Pony/One Rider 10-13 Boys and was the winner of the Nikovich Award Boy (boy winning the most points for the year).

In Minnesota, Jase was Champion One Pony/ One Rider Timed 10-13, Reserve Champion in The Leonard Lewis Memorial Timed Traveling Trophy and Reserve Champion in One Pony/One Rider 10-13.

In POAC Year Ends, Jase lead J-N Tobe Gorgeous to 1st place in Medium Mare Halter, 2nd in Costume 18 & Under, 1st in Hunt Seat Equitation 10-13 Boy, 1st in Horsemanship 10-13 boy, and 2nd in Timed 10-13, and 6th in Top Ten in the Nation.

What a great job by Jase on “Jessie” a young POA who is only 19 non-timed points shy of her Supreme Champion.

We are so proud of both of you and looking forward to watching you achieve your goals in 2016.

Remember, you must be a National POAC member to conduct any POAC business (except transfers).

You must also be a member if you participate in the POAC approved Regional, Classic, West-World, Congress, and International Futurity shows.

Be sure to refer to the POAC National Handbook for exact membership requirements.

You can find the POAC National Handbook online at http://www.poac. org/resources/forms/index.htm Effective July 1, 2015, all exhibitors must be a current National POAC member before earning any national points on any pony they exhibit at any POAC approved event.

Inspection and PHC Reminder Only those ponies that have been advanced from Tentative to Permanent

Registration AND whose papers have been processed and received by the owner may be inspected for a Permanent Height Card. Ponies cannot be inspected for Permanent Papers AND their PHC at the same time.

Ponies cannot be measured for a Permanent Height Card until they have received their Permanent registration papers back from the National POA. Remember that PHC’s can only be done at Regionals, Congress, International Sale, West World, and any other POA approved show that has advertised in POA Coming Events that they will be offering PHC measuring and inspection and will have the inspection team required for Permanent Height Cards.

Sale/Futurity Late Nomination Notice If you late nominate for the Fall Futurities for Yearlings and Older, you will pay a one-time $50 late fee per class. No yearling and other futurity entries will be accepted after Sept. 5 for the 2016 POAC International Futurity except for any Maturity and Non Pro Classes offered. Select Sire Futurity entries can be made until 24 hours before the futurity show begins.

Youth News 2016 Texas POAC Officers

Howdy y’all! My name is Sadie Hinz, and I am the 2016 Youth President of Texas Pony of the Americas Club. For those that don’t know me, I would like to introduce myself and the rest of our 2016 officers.

I am 12-years-old and in the 6th grade in Italy Junior High in Italy, Texas. In addition to riding my pony Cinnamon, a.k.a. Plaudits Handsome Lad, at POA shows, we compete in our local horse club, Ellis County Equine Association, and are very active in our Silver Spurs 4-H Club as well. My favorite classes to compete with on Cinnamon are jumping and games. My other hobbies include playing basketball , running, and playing my clarinet.

The rest of the Texas POAC Youth Club officers are Vice President Kylee Phillips, Secretary Gentry Rogers, Treasurer LaKayla Phillips and Reporter Keely Sims.

Our club just got finished with the legendary Fort Worth Stock Show.

It is always my favorite show of the whole year. Congratulations to all of the high point winners who won buckles and to the scholarship winners in the 14 to 18 age group.

Youth News Texas POAC Turkey Trot

The youth of Texas Pony of the Americas Club endured show days containing tornado warnings, huge thunderstorms, high winds, and stock show “crazy” mixed with some perfect gorgeous Texas sunshine, to compete in the 2015 show season.

The kids and ponies who toughed it out through all the shows were awarded at the Texas POAC Year End awards banquet held January 17, 2016, in Waxahachie, Texas.

These Texas Top 10 Riders won buckles for their hard work: #1 Kylee Phillips #2 Sadie Hinz #3 LaKayla Phillips #4 Gentry Rogers #5 Avery Newsom #6 Haley Sims #7 Lucas Phillips #8 Jaden Dixon #9 Keely Sims #10 Mikayla Venable Awards were also given for 100 percent participation, 50 percent participation, halter, showmanship, trail, western pleasure, hunter under

Pony News

Recent Grad Continues with POAs 2014 POAC Graduate, Elizabeth Poczobut of Kingston, TN was recently one of 16 Collegiate Level Equestrians invited to the AQHA Collegiate Horsemanship Challenge in Oklahoma City, OK. The Collegiate Challenge is an event held during the AQHA World Show where 8 riders from the NCEA (National Collegiate Equestrian Association) and 8 riders from the IHSA (Intercollegiate Horse Show Association) are invited to compete against one another on horses provided by AQHA professional horsemen in attendance at the World Show. Elizabeth rode to a score of 141, placing her tenth among her fellow top collegiate horsemen, and still has the opportunity to be invited back twice more.

Elizabeth started her POAC youth career in 1997 at the age of 2. Her POA show career continued until she graduated from POA youth competition in 2014 at the age of 19.

In the years she competed in POA, she was blessed to ride, show and help raise some great POA’s. April Dream By JW was her leadline mount and first real equine friend. April went on to become the dam of our stallion, Definitely A Dream ToSea. Krystal’s Dakota, a hard shipped gelding, taught Elizabeth to ride independently when he became her 8& Under pony. Dakota earned his very first International Championship in Open Jumping with Elizabeth in 2004. Elizabeth also began showing Definitely A Dream ToSea in-hand and went on to show him under saddle when he was 2. She earned Definitely A Dream ToSea’s POAC Supreme Championship when she was 11 yrs. old.

Early in Elizabeth’s 9-12 show career, she had the opportunity to own Crusader Moon Dust. With 8

Dusty, Elizabeth learned the finer skills of riding, showing and learning that riding a mare who was a bit different from her first few ponies.

Dusty and Elizabeth had many local, regional and International titles together and the two earned the POAC Supreme Champion Title in 2011. Elizabeth wanted a Jr. Pony so she picked one from our foal crop and began her next challenge, training a pony. HS Sea Hez Trendy rose to the challenge, and their highlight was winning the Keith Davis Memorial Western Futurity at the 2013 POAC Congress. In between, all of these amazing ponies, there were other “catch” rides for the many friends we made in POA. Which helped to set the stage for her successes as a collegiate athlete.

After the 2012 South East Regional Show in Georgia, one of the judges asked to speak with Elizabeth and her parents. She was the assistant coach of a college equestrian team and was impressed with Elizabeth’s horsemanship skills, and invited her to Berry College to try out for their IHSA (Intercollegiate Horse Show Association) Equestrian Team.

Elizabeth always knew she wanted to ride on a collegiate team, but we had never heard of Berry College. Most of the college coaches we talked to were aware of POA, but most told us the same thing, “we look to the more well-known breeds”. Regardless, Elizabeth visited Berry, rode a tenminute tryout, and was accepted as an Open Western Rider for the Berry College Vikings.

Elizabeth considers her youth career in POA to be paramount to her success on the IHSA Team. Having ridden many different POA’s and learning to ride multiple disciplines, has given Elizabeth the confidence to get on a horse she has never ridden - POA March 2016 -

and succeed. In IHSA, riders are assigned a show mount in a random draw. (She often explains it like the process of bull riding to those unfamiliar with the sport.) In IHSA, the riders are not allowed “warm up” time in the saddle, but are given a short list of do’s and don’ts for the horse they drew. You can watch your horse warm up with a different rider, but other than that you get on and go show. Elizabeth shows in Open Western Horsemanship and Open Reining. As a freshman in 2014, Elizabeth rode to an 8th place finish at IHSA Nationals in Individual Open Horsemanship.

In May of 2015, as a sophomore, Elizabeth helped her team (Berry College) win the 2015 IHSA National Western Championship. Elizabeth rode six times at Nationals last year, competing in both team and individual classes, as well as the AQHA Collegiate Cup Challenge.

Highlights from 2015 included a reserve champion in individual Open Western Horsemanship, and clinching the Viking’s team win in the last class of the event- Team Open Horsemanship.

Being invited to the AQHA Collegiate Horsemanship Challenge was such an honor. Her coach traveled with her to the competition and was surprised at how many people she knew while at the show!

Elizabeth was often heard saying that person used to be a POA Kid too!

Currently, Elizabeth has been coaching POA Youth, and is training a new young pony for POAC competition in 2016. She is looking forward to the IHSA Semi Finals at Black Hawk College in March 2016 and hoping to defend Berry College’s National Championship title at the IHSA National Finals in Lexington KY in May 2016.

Cadie Sue was born June 1, 1995.

From the beginning Cadie Sue was a very special girl she was her grandmothers first grandchild and named after her Caddos Cajun Delight (Cadie) and her mother Suerstition Suzie (Suzan). Cadie sue began her show carrier as a weanling that didn’t like being away from her mother so did the jump up and flop in the mud just as she was going into her first halter class. However she did become the show girl that we knew she would be. As a yearling with my daughter Janae doing the teaching she became the high point yearling filly at the International Futurity winning the halter class and tying for first in Longe Line.

As a two year old with Janae as trainer and rider she won the JPFC English Pleasure, got second in JPFC Western Pleasure and third in JPFC Trail at the International Show. Again

that year at the International Futurity she won JPFC English Pleasure, JPFC Western Pleasure and seventh in JPFC Trail and second in Two Year Old Halter Mares. Doing this she earned the High Point Two Year Old at the International Futurity. Cadie Sue continued with the JPFC program until she aged out at four, after that she returned home and produced a colt and two fillies. In 2003 she returned to the show ring with nine year old Bailey Skinner who’s POA was still a junior pony just being trained and needed a finished horse to ride and learn from. Cadie Sue made the trip to Spanish Fork, Utah to the POA World Show and came home with the title of World Champion Broodmare.

In 2005 Cadie Sue meet Abby Kelts the almost two year old daughter of Elizabeth Stone Kelts an ex POA’er. Since it was at a POA horse - POA March 2016 -

show Cadie Sue was in her stall and Abby rode her up and down the aisle until Elizabeth and I got tired of walking, and then it was tears because Abby wasn’t ready to get off.

However in 2011 I leased Cadie Sue to the Kelts family because by this time they were needing another POA because little sister Maggie was riding Abby’s leadline pony. Abby rode Cadie Sue in 2011, 2012, 2013, and 2014 achieving her Supreme Champion.

Reminder about Youth Novice Program If you are interested in participating in the Youth Novice Program, be sure to read the eligibility requirements on our POA website, www.POAC.org, and submit an application for your Novice card … you must allow at least two weeks for processing before you will receive your card. At all National Events, you must have prior approval by the National POAC before you can participate in any Novice event. Call the National POAC if you have any questions about the Novice Program.

Remember Show Secretaries and Club Officers When planning your show schedules and awards for 2016 and beyond, make sure you use the new age codes that will be implemented by the National POAC effective January 1, 2015 which include –6&Under, 9&Under, 10-13, and 14-18.

Note for Gelding Owners Showing a POA Gelding at a POA approved show without updating his registration papers to reflect the change from Stallion to Gelding may result in a loss of points! If you are showing a gelding please check your papers and make sure the correct sex is listed. If the pony is not updated you will need to submit your ponies original papers along with a letter stating when the pony was gelded and the $5 fee for processing the paperwork.

A.

This class is OPTIONAL at all levels with this class being pointed in 2 divisions 18 & under and 19 & over for National Year-End Awards and for individual class points toward ROM Ranch Horse Pleasure only. This class will not count toward any other Year-End or High Point Awards.

B.

Classes may be run at a separate location and concurrently with other classes. The show committee or judge may designate a qualified person(s) over the age of 18 to judge this class. Judges’ cards MUST be signed by the person judging the class. Two judges are required at a Pony Rama or any double judged show.

C.

TACK AND ATTIRE Working attire may be a long sleeved western shirt with a collar, jeans, western boots and western hat or approved safety helmet. Show attire may be worn with no penalty as saddles and bridles with silver ARE acceptable but not given preference over clean working saddles and bridles.

Banded manes are allowed with no preference over natural or roached manes. Tail extensions are allowed.

D. CLASS ROUTINE 1. This class is a pattern class that is judged on the pony’s ability to work each part of the pattern correctly and efficiently with a free forward motion. There are 5 approved patterns that can be found on the POAC website.

Maneuver 1: Walk. 4 beat gait, with a level top line and relaxed appearance.

Maneuver 2: Trot. This is a ground covering gait with a flat knee and hock with some cushion in his pastern. Maneuver 3: The extended Trot has an obvious lengthening to the stride with an increase in pace. Riders MAY post the extended trot, stand in the stirrups with or without holding the horn or sit the gait.

Maneuver 4: Lope. This is a 3 beat gait; displaying forward motion with a level top line.

Maneuver 5: Extended Lope. Obvious lengthening of the stride and increase in pace without going into a gallop. Lead changes MAY be simple or flying.

Maneuver 6; 360 Turn; steady and efficient Maneuver 7; Back; in a straight line, soft in the bridle not gaping mouth or bracing E. Penalties; Ponies with unnaturally slow gaits should be heavily penalized Rule 96E. Children in the 9 & under age group are prohibited from exhibiting stallions in any class.

Leadline 6 & under exhibitors are prohibited from showing stallions of any age in Leadline Showmanship. However, the Show Committee MAY allow at their discretion Stallions 2 yrs. and older to be shown in Leadline Horsemanship, Leadline Trail, Leadline Costume and Leadline Games.

Rule 98F. Clarification of Rule An Exhibitor can NOT ride in the 9 & under W/T Pleasure and the 9 & under W/T/C Pleasure classes at the same show. If a rider exhibits in a WT only pleasure class they are not allowed to exhibit in a 3 gaited PLEASURE class such as the JR or SR Pleasure classes at the same show. An exhibitor that rides in a WT only class is allowed to enter the Trail, Gymkhana, Reining, Western Riding and any of the Hunter over Fence Classes at the same show.

Rule 101B. In all Leadline classes; a halter MUST be worn underneath the bridle. The lead MUST be attached to the halter.

RULE 105 Hunt Seat Attire ASTM/SEI Approved protective headgear with fastened harness is REQUIRED for ALL Youth classes on the flat and classes requiring over fence work.

Rule 148A. POA YEAR END SPECIAL NEEDS EQUINE EVENT PARTICIPANT AWARD Open to any age special needs person(s). Events can include horse shows, therapy riding, recorded time at home or any event completed on a POA. Submit essay on the nominee including the following: a picture, participant’s name and name and contact info of person submitting the application. Essays will be evaluated by a panel of judges. The award will be presented at the National POAC Convention. Submit to; National POAC – Special Needs Program – 3828 S. Emerson Avenue – Indianapolis IN 46203.

YOUTH PROMOTER AWARD APPLICATION

The purpose of this award is to encourage and reward youth for promoting their ponies to others who are not in or are not familiar with the POA breed.

An award will be given to the youth who best promotes the POA in 2014. This award is open to all youth 18 and under, the youth does not have to be a national POA member. The award consists of $200 cash, a free family membership (with magazine), and a one page picture and write up about the youth and how they promoted the POA’s outside our breed.
