BACKGROUND CHECKS Thank you for volunteering to work with our Kiwanis International Service Leadership Programs. You are making an investment in the future of Kiwanis and your community by dedicating time to our future leaders! Now that you have made this important commitment, the first step is completing a background check with the Kiwanis International-approved vendor, Safe Hiring Solutions. button. If you have trouble finding the background check button, email your club secretary for a member-specific link or contact backgroundchecks@kiwanis.org.

If you are paying for your background check, please have your credit card information (Visa, Mastercard, Discover) nearby to submit at the end of the process, unless your club has made other payment arrangements.

STEP 3 The search begins! What exactly do we check? IN THE UNITED STATES Social Security verification National Criminal Database National Sex Offender Registry County criminal search Federal district search OUTSIDE THE UNITED STATES We make every attempt to keep the screening process similar from country to country to ensure that our volunteers and the youth that we serve are safe. A message from 2019-2020 Governor Melanie Bozak

Greetings and Happy New Year! As we have now passed our quarter-year mark and move into the new year (is it really 2020 already?), there is much to write about. It’s hard to believe how fast this year is going and, as I travel the District, I absolutely love meeting Kiwanians and hear about the service they are doing in their communities. Just look what an impact we are having! You are all certainly displaying that you are embracing my theme and pin message of being Kiwanis Proud! We have so many exciting events, celebrations and changes coming up! Starting with the events, you will NOT want to miss the Mid-Winter Conference that will be held in Yakima at the Howard Johnson Plaza by Wyndham the weekend of February 28 through March 1. Registration is open and online now. We have scheduled entertainment, speakers and three separate Learning Tracks that will interest ALL club members. Let me just add a fun little hint: you will have an opportunity to make a beautiful mask for the District convention this summer! Now, on to celebrations: there are several more clubs in the District who will celebrate their 100-year mark this year. The first one is January 18th in Victoria, BC and I certainly look forward to attending. We’ll let you know about the others as we move forward. I’m sure there are other multi-year anniversaries being celebrated and I would love to attend those as well as time allows. So, on to the changes coming this year, I have been sending emails to the clubs in my weekly Melanie’s Musings to keep you all apprised of what’s coming. The first major change, District re-alignment, is moving along and will have full discussions for both the Division names and possible club movements at the Mid-Winter Conference. The other major change was announced by email last month regarding our NEW Club Excellence Retreats that will be taking place this Spring across the District, employing a regional approach to a combination member training and club leadership training at the same event. I see them as a one-day mini-conferences for all members with our District Trainers ready to implement this idea through interactive sessions all day to energize Kiwanians in a variety of areas. So, please plan to send many club members, including your newly elected officers. There will be something for everyone! As you know, I have continued the Membership Priority 1 theme and award. I’ve been tracking the new members and sponsors to be able to send out the awards and 25 members have already earned it the first 2 months of the year. We have already opened several new clubs this year and we are #3 in the world in net membership increase! In the first 2 months of our year, out of 35 Divisions, 31 show growth in membership. Twenty-three clubs have achieved 15% or greater net gain already; my Governor’s Challenge is for 5% or more. Thanks to all who are working on membership improvement across the District. If you’d like to join in the fun of inviting people to join us, please let me and the Membership Team know! There are two fantastic conventions coming up this year that you won’t want to miss. The first is International Convention in June in Indianapolis and the PNW has a candidate running for Trustee, Roger Bell. We’re so thrilled to support him! We also have again sponsored the Family Membership Plan amendment for what we hope is the final time. It’s very important that we get a LOT of our members to Indianapolis to support both. Please plan to send your club’s two delegates. Registration opens this month. District Convention is in the Tri-Cities this year August 20th thru 23rd and I am so excited for the opportunities and fun that it presents for the entire District. You’ll hear much more about it so watch for that information on planned events and training. Thank you to everyone in the Pacific Northwest for your support for me as your Governor this year and remember, always be Kiwanis Proud!

The Executive Committee Retreat in Goose Prairie, Washington The 2019 Executive Committee retreat was held Oct 4-6, 2019 at the Double K Lodge. Governor Melanie led the group in meetings on Friday evening and all-day Saturday. Invited guests included the Governor Counselors and several Chairmen of priority issues for the upcoming year. The biggest decision made by the group was to throw out the traditional Club Leadership Experience (CLE) program and build a new Club Excellence Retreat (CER) that focuses on strengthening clubs and improving the flow of new leadership for every Club, the Divisions, and our District. The goal is to make training of new officers more valuable and to encourage members to consider new leadership opportunities.

A message from District Secretary Ed Luttrell

The Power Of Your Club Serving the children of the world in 2020 requires that we continue to make this year all about your club. Your club is the front line of the effort to give each child the best opportunity possible, both in your community and in the far reaches of the world. It doesn’t matter if that opportunity is a vaccination saving a life in Africa or a scholarship to a single student, these things happen because of your club. While each club is independent in how they choose to serve the children, the fact that we join together under the Kiwanis banner multiplies our strengths and efforts. Our Divisions, District, and International organization adds ideas, money, and helping hands to what we can do alone in our local Clubs. Under the leadership of Daniel Vigneron at the International level, Melanie Bozak at the PNW District level, and your Lt. Governor at the Division level, and your club President there is an abundance of help available to your club. Training to help your club retain their current members and recruit new members. Awards to recognize the achievements of your members when working together. Ideas shared between members and clubs to start new projects or find ways to raise needed funds. All you have to do is reach out and ask for that help. It is something simple and easy. Requesting some assistance is part of what Kiwanis really means. It is to help another out, with no thought of repayment. No intent beyond the desire to help and that is how we grow our clubs and meet our purposes. It is all about your club, for without your club you’d be on your own, with no assistance or encouragement, alone with a worthy mission. Yet because of your club, you have friends who share in your passion, you have those who cheer on the efforts you cherish and work for. It is when you and your club make the decision to bring new members into your organization and share with them what makes your club unique and special that marvelous things happen. Projects at the District and International levels are really accomplished at the local Club level. And these efforts are carried out by the dedicated and committed members of your club, both new and seasoned. As 2020 begins, take the time to remind each member that it is really all about your club. Take advantage of the opportunities that are presented and learn how to make your club grow and prosper in the coming year. Send a member to Mid-Winter Conference to share, take a car-load to a Club Excellence Retreat this spring, Send two delegates to the International Convention, and three to the District Convention and empower your club to make an even bigger difference that it has already made. PNW CKI - On The Move The PNW Movement is CKI’s path to maximum potential. By targeting issues surrounding diversity, equity, and inclusion within our organization, we will be able to recognize specific weaknesses within. Whether its membership numbers, satisfaction and engagement, quality of service, or the multitude of leadership opportunities; CKI’s internal problems can be solved through the implementation of strategic planning, rebranding, and training centered on diversity and inclusion. Diversity and inclusion is a hot topic in today’s social climate. Companies and organizations all around the world have made strides in ensuring that their brand is inclusive, equitable, and accessible. In turn, most organizations that successfully implement proper strategies to target prominent issues see great return, both internally and externally. Higher engagement levels in accordance with higher membership are the result of members seeing the true value in joining a college experience like CKI. This Governors Project is different from many others. We believe that before helping others, we must learn to help ourselves. How can we serve the children of the world if we

aren’t able to serve our organization? It targets issues that are a true reality for clubs and members on all levels of the Kiwanis Family, and it’s a project that needs support to gain traction. Coined as the PNW Movement, our district is pushing for international recognition of the issues facing our organization today. This year, our district plans to implement numerous internal strategies, create effective resources, and rebrand our district to be representative of today’s collegiate social climate. This project targets three primary issues: Recruitment and Engagement, Image and Promotion, and Kiwanis Family Relations. While implementing effective strategies will allow our organization to grow with the generational shift, the Movement is also one that takes time. Being a long-term Governors Project will allow easier turnover, achievable goals, and the ability to thoroughly analyze the solutions to our problems. This year, we plan to create new resources, curriculum, and strategies that align with improving diversity and inclusion. In year two, In the future, we plan to analyze and amplify the results of our strategy. From here, we can promote our Movement, and push the idea further on the international level.

Oliver Kiwanis Seniors Building Social housing in B.C. has a long and rich history working with volunteer non-profit groups. They include service clubs, fraternal organizations, faith-based groups, representative agencies, and many more. What they all have in common is a commitment to a better life for their clients and tenants. They provide humanity in housing. There are over 100,000 households in B.C. today that receive rent assistance or live in some form of social housing. Governments have for decades built housing focused on the need of communities. It can be family, seniors, mental health, addictions, supportive and other types of housing. Building new is important, maintaining and preserving older housing is also important.

2020 CHANGES! Look What’s NEW with our re-designed CLUB EXCELLENCE RETREATS There is Something for Everyone! Still only $35 per person! Position training for club leaders Education and value for every club member, including: • Breakout sessions for the club’s leadership training • New, interactive education sessions • Sharing opportunities for all members • Governors Team discussions • Governor-elect candidates • Other regional topics of interest “These new Club Excellence Retreats are designed to provide the best experience and support for all of our Kiwanians, no matter what role they have in the club.” - Governor Melanie Bozak

The project in this picture is the Oliver Kiwanis seniors building. This building was reaching the end of its life and coming to the crossroads of renovation or demolition. It could have been the latter if not for the commitment of the society’s president Larry Larson and his board. The building needed a refit, modernization, and frankly, a focus that only passionate volunteers can bring to the table. Mr. Larson and his board also brought corporate knowledge which was critical to the aging Kiwanis project. The longserving volunteers knew the building and its challenges. The building was constructed at a time when blueprints were not preserved as they are on buildings today. We needed their knowledge of plumbing, electrical and structural challenges. So, what happened? The building has a new life including exterior and interior upgrades. The upgrades: New windows, doors, better hallway air exchange, heating and cooling systems, sprinkler system, and much, much more. Oliver and British Columbia should be proud of the commitment of Larry Larson, his board and the Kiwanis. -Rich Coleman, Vancouver 16 PNW Kiwanisbuilder magazine | Winter 2020

ANNUAL CLUB GIFT Has your Kiwanis Club ever donated to the PNW Kiwanis Foundation? In some Divisions, every club has for many years; while others may have never. By October 15th clubs were to have approved their annual budget; so, did your club have a line item for our foundation? In November, clubs were to pay their invoiced annual dues for which the first quarter is also a good time to make your annual club donation to the PNW Kiwanis Foundation. Contributions to the Annual Club Gift Campaign at any giving level are appreciated and help make a difference. The suggested giving level of $5.00 or more per member is recommended to help the Foundation meet the purposes for which it was chartered. A lump sum amount of any size works, too. If every Pacific Northwest District Kiwanis Club was to contribute on an annual basis, the PNW Kiwanis Foundation would be able to not only continue and expand its current service but also ensure a legacy of support to children and youth for years to come. An annual club gift is remembered. When Grants are awarded for Club Projects, they are reviewed on at least these four criteria: 1. Those clubs who apply on time. 2. Those clubs who have their own skin in the game. 3. Those clubs who contributed to the PNWKF in the past and show a current need. 4. Those clubs who line up community partners. Your contribution helps other clubs achieve a project that needs a boost, that provides scholarships, and funds CKI and Key Club Outreach. Please help us out! Write your check now payable to the “Pacific Northwest Kiwanis Foundation. Mail the check to: PNW Kiwanis Foundation, 5427 Glen Echo Av., Gladstone, OR 97027 For more information, go to http://www.pnwkiwanisfoundation.org.
