A message from 2018-2019 Governor Jerry Deas

All Aboard! Your Centennial Express has been rolling down the tracks and is almost ready to arrive at the station. As the Engineer, I have to tell you, it has been a tremendous ride and I want to share some of the ride with you. Since this Spring, we have traveled throughout our great Pacific Northwest District to visit with clubs, divisions and local Kiwanians to see firsthand the work of Kiwanis in Serving the Children of the World. Work that you can be so proud of in your communities. Many times during my visits I would hear that this is a small project in our town but I realize that even the small project creates a huge impact with the children it touches. Playgrounds and parks and Bike Rodeos and track and field games for individuals with special needs are just a few of the many projects clubs are doing. Something that I share with my fellow Engineers around Kiwanis with pride. Keep up those projects because through them your service is felt. During the course of this train ride, I have personally witnessed the gift of creation with the building of 4 Kiwanis Clubs in our district with 5 to 6 more planned before the train arrives at the station. This extension of Kiwanis is growing our family, creating new opportunities for service, for leadership development, and creation of friendships throughout the district. We have seen new Kiwanis Clubs in Seattle at Seattle Children’s Hospital, in North Portland in Portland, Oregon, with the Greater Beaverton Club in Beaverton, Oregon and on to Western Washington County in Forest Grove, Oregon. Our newest club is in Everett with the building of our Greater Everett, Washington Club. These clubs will be highlighted at our District Convention in Portland, Oregon this August 22-25, 2019. Speaking of our Convention, in just a few short weeks we will gather to welcome the Centennial Express as it arrives at the Red Lion Hotel Jantzen Beach in Portland. On board the express will be our district leadership team and some dynamic speakers and candidate for district office. Our convention committee has been working hard to put together a convention to long remember and as your Chief Engineer, I hope you will join us for a fun filled weekend. One of the new things we have added this year is a Day Pass. This is an opportunity for folks to attend just a day of the convention to learn more, share more and make more new friends. You can use your pass on Friday or on Saturday of the convention. If you have an interest in all the educational opportunities, you may use Friday or for the business and fun aspects of convention then Saturday could work for you. For $30.00 experience the thrill of a convention. Our Governorelect Melanie has some exciting Learning Tracks for all of us, so from member to club or division leader, you will find something that will be of interest to you. Special recognition will be given to our clubs celebrating 100 years, Seattle, Tacoma, Portland, Vancouver, BC and Astoria, Oregon. Come celebrate with them as we also welcome the clubs of the 2nd hundred years listed above and continue the work of service in the PNW. Membership remains Priority One for us and I ask that you work hard to create that plus 1 in your club on September 30, 2019. Through your efforts we can grow our district and provide so many more hands for Service to Children. Won’t you help to make that happen? Think of that friend, neighbor, and business associate that you would like to belong to your Kiwanis Club. Just ASK. Always Say Kiwanis! And Remember…IT’S GREAT TO BE A KIWANIAN! A message from 2018-2019 Governor-Elect Melanie Bozak

From The Governor-Elect I am so excited to serve as your Governor-elect this year because it allows me to work alongside a very talented and enthusiastic team of Lt. Governors and District Chairs to create a strong vision for you, our members, and prepare for a fantastic year. You may recall I ran on the theme of “Catch the Excitement” last year and this Team certainly has caught it! The Lt. Governor Training Conference was held the first weekend of June and, while everyone really worked long hours, it was extremely fun and rewarding with excellent presentations by many of our District Chairs. I’m very pleased to announce the 2019-2020 team name of “Pacific Proud” was chosen. It really brings a smile to my face because it ties in our beautiful Pacific Ocean border with my mantra of “Kiwanis Proud” that is shown on the Governor’s pin! With the Team Pacific Proud moniker, we’re ready to lead the way into the 101st year to inspire our membership to ever greater heights. I’ve also chosen to continue the additional theme of ‘Membership Is Priority One’ that Governor Roger created two years ago but with a new pin design to honor those members who are Kiwanis Proud and sponsor new members. You’ll hear more about both of those themes at the District convention in Portland on August 22-25, 2019 and also about my Challenges to you as Kiwanians and your clubs. Speaking of the District convention, I hope I see you there as we celebrate the great accomplishments of Team Centennial Express this year. They have been busy and I’m challenging Team Pacific Proud to equal or surpass their accomplishments, especially with membership. We need everyone’s help to continue building our clubs’ membership and especially not lose our members out the back door. We have three months left in our administrative year and this is the time when we can work hard and engage our members that we haven’t seen for awhile. Let’s work with Team Centennial Express and have another year of positive growth to bring more service to our communities and do this for the children in the PNW District! Thinking of membership, my mind goes to the Club Leadership Education sessions (CLE) that are in full swing across the District. Club leaders and all Kiwanians can learn so much and get help with revitalizing our clubs. Vicki Frucci and her education team are well prepared and have been sharing the strengths of Kiwanis and how to make our clubs even stronger. The last opportunity this year will be during District Convention in Portland. There is nothing better than the in-person training where you can get questions answered and meet so many like-minded people. Back to Convention for just a moment, I’m very excited about what the Convention team is preparing for us…a fun Friday Night Silent Disco event, a formal Governor’s Ball Saturday night, and the 2-hour Service Sharing session on Friday, which is your opportunity to learn about 24 club favorite service or fundraising projects. In addition, there are many educational opportunities under the education theme this year of Reimagining Kiwanis. There is something for everyone in the 30 sessions of 6 Learning Tracks over 2 days, which are titled Leadership, Membership, Service is Our Mission, PR & Marketing, New Thinking & New Possibilities and Technology Guidance. Whew, that’s a lot of training and presenters! I certainly hope you won’t miss it. Register today! Join me and the Pacific Proud team as we are installed on Sunday morning during the final delegate session, as we work hard on Governor Jerry’s goals to finish the year, and as we get ready to kick off our 2019-2020 year. And, remember, always be Kiwanis Proud! Melanie Bozak Governor-Elect 2018-2019 mbozak@gmail.com

A message from District Secretary Ed Luttrell

It’s Your Convention! As I sat here looking at the blinking cursor, thinking of what to share with you the reader, it came to me. I’ve just returned from Florida and the International Kiwanis Convention (ICON). I reflect upon the convention and wonder why so many choose not to attend. A short time spent learning about what Kiwanis means to others and what it could mean to you. A busy time spent learning about the joys of service and making new friends who share your passion. And there is always time for fun and relaxation. This year ICON was a great experience with thousands of Kiwanians getting to know each other, sharing their club experiences with those who sat next to them, and each gaining enthusiasm and energy from the other. Plus, each of us had the opportunity to share in the magic of Disney. Conventions are about the business of the organization, the sharing of dreams and goals with members, and seeing something new and different that just might expand your mind. I’ve been attending conventions since I was sixteen and have lost count of how many I’ve attended in part or in their entirety. Yet I’ve never failed to learn something valuable to me at one. The upcoming District Convention (DCON) to be held in August at the Red Lion on the River in Portland, Oregon is a great opportunity for every Kiwanis member to experience the fun and fellowship of convention. This year’s DCON is your chance to get “All Aboard” and ride the rails of fun and service to success. Portland may not be the Magic Kingdom, but it is where our District Leaders will be to answer your questions, give you insight into creating growth in your club, and even advise you on how to grow as a leader in your community. Education that will help you, and a focus on giving you the resources that will enable your club to achieve success are the primary goals. If you’ve never been to a District Convention, this year is your opportunity. Registration is a bargain at only $200 until August 1 and the special low Kiwanis rate at the hotel is good only to July 29. And for those who can only take one day to explore the convention, there is a day pass for either Friday or Saturday for those who are not current or past leaders of our District for only $30 plus meals. (see the list of eligibility or register on our website http://www.kiwanispnw.org/districtconvention.html) If you are a regular attendee at our Kiwanis Convention, I hope you are as excited about the opportunity as I and encourage others to attend. Remember that each club is entitled to 3 delegates to debate and conduct the business of the District. As I sit and look at the words that have spilled out about convention, I feel that familiar excitement building in anticipation of DCON. Kiwanis is about service, fun and helping each of us to grow as leaders. I hope to meet you at the Red Lion and get to know you this year. To each of you today, All Aboard! Welcome to DCON! Key Clubbers Carry Banners In Portland’s Grande Floral Parade On a cool Saturday, June 8th, 55 Key Clubbers from the Pacific Northwest District of Key Club International carried the award banners in the Grand Floral Parade. These students represented Key Clubs at the following high schools in the greater Portland metropolitan: Franklin, Roosevelt, Wilson, Lakeridge, Sunset, Westview, Beaverton, Hillsboro, Mountainside, Centennial, and Evergreen, Mountain View, Union, Fort Vancouver, Heritage, and Camas in Clark County. Divisions 44, 62, 64, 65 and 66 participated in the service project. This was the first year for the project and those who participated said they had a great time and look forward to doing it again.

(left to right): Div. 65 Westview High School Ryan Iness, Vivian Liu, Qijia “Joy” Liu, Eleni Kandas.

The Rose Festival Foundation was thrilled with the great support. Melanie Means, Rose Festival Foundation Director responsible for the banners wrote in her thank-you, “Banners went the smoothest in the four years since I’ve been involved, and I’m extremely indebted to Connie Shipley for making that happen. She brought 55 Key Club banner carriers and handled all the coordination, communication, shirts, waiver collection and headaches! Connie and the Key Clubbers were a great partner and we will be chatting soon how to streamline this for next year and share the workload in acquiring and managing the group on parade day.” - Connie Shipley, President Kiwanis Club of Portland

Incoming Club Officers, Members and Future Leaders: Did you (or will you) miss the Club Leadership Education Session offered in your division/region? If so, you have the opportunity to attend a special makeup session in conjunction with the District Convention in Portland, Oregon. For that reason, the Board of Trustees of Kiwanis International has mandated that club officers attend CLE prior to assuming office. Portland will be your final opportunity to attend CLE before the beginning of the 2019-2020 administrative year. Training will begin at 9:00 AM on Thursday, August 22nd at the Red Lion Hotel Jantzen Beach. Cost for the all-day session is $50 US/$50.00 CDN if registered by August 12th. Registration after August 12th or at the door will be $60 US/$60.00 CDN. Lunch is included. Educational Opportunity At District Convention Governor-Elect Melanie Bozak has created a new opportunity for our Kiwanis members at District Convention (DCON). She has built a series of Learning Tracks that members can follow and expand their knowledge in a specific area. There will be five classes in each of the six Learning Tracks. They are: Leadership, Membership, Service is our Mission, Public Relations and Marketing, New Thinking and New Possibilities, and Technology Guidance. Members may pick a track and followit over Friday and Saturday of DCON or mix and match as they see fit. This change follows current trends and methods used in many professional conferences and should help enhance the experience of DCON attendees this year in Portland, Oregon. Reimagining Kiwanis is the theme and thought behind this effort. Plan now to attend DCON in August and have some discussions in your club for what tracks your members will benefit from and have one member in each track if possible.

Our District. Our History. Do you know how a PNW Kiwanis member was able to be elected to the international board without ever serving as Governor or even Lieutenant Governor? Do you know why there were troops marching in the street outside the district convention when the United States was not at war? Do you know why a park in Vancouver BC boasts a Kiwaniscommissioned monument to an American President? In honor of the PNW District’s 100th anniversary, Past Governor Patrick Ewing has been writing a district history that celebrates the clubs, leaders, and events that shaped our history. The full-color book is full of images that help bring alive our district history. Those who pre-order by July 4th will be able to purchase a limited, 1st edition copy at the PNW District Convention. Saint Helens Kiwanis First Book Progam Every year, all kindergarten-aged children in St. Helens School District receive a “first book” thanks to a donation from the Kiwanis Club of St. Helens. The Eagle’s are both members of The Kiwanis club of St. Helens, but Claudia started the program around eight years ago. “I was just amazed, because when I was a child I had books all over the place, so I was surprised to find that there were kids didn’t even have one book of their own,” Claudia said about her observation as a former teacher. That thought stuck with her. When the “first book” program first started, Claudia fundraised two years worth of money for the program until she teamed up with Kiwanis and they took over the funding for the program. This year, Kiwanis spent $927 at Powell’s Books in Portland. When the Eagle’s drove to pick them up, 240 books were awaiting them, all sorted out, packed and ready to be loaded into the car. Bill said Powell’s always have been very supportive, understanding and helpful. At the schools, one kindergartner class at a time would come lined up in the hallway to a table where the Eagle’s displayed the books. Bill would hold a short introductory statement telling the kids that the book they choose would be their very own. “That means you can take it home with you, you can give it away as a gift, or as Mrs. Eagle, she keeps her books forever,” Bill said. “She has some books she has had since she was in kindergarten, and she still reads them too.” Bill said that the good thing about the books is that you don’t need any batteries; you don’t need any electricity, and that the book will always work as long as there’s light. Then, the kids would walk slowly around the table to look at all the books before getting to choose one to keep forever. A friend of the couple recently gave them eight boxes of books and games as well. With their living room full of books, the Eagle’s have given books to the SAFE of Columbia County’s Women’s Resource Center and plan on giving some to the Columbia county Jail. Their main love is seeing the faces of the children as they give them books. After all, said Claudia. “Helping children is what Kiwanis does. We want to help make our world a better place for us all and the best place to start is with our children.”

Earth Day saw several trees planted at Kiwanis Park at Klindt’s Cove. The Dalles Kiwanis Club hosted the Division 66 Council Meeting with club representatives from Portland’s east suburbs. Handling the shovels are local club President Paul Viemeister, Division 66 Lt. Governor C.M. Owen, Pacific Northwest District Governor Jerry Deas, and past Lt. Governor Mary Stocks. The tree was dedicated in memory of Gary Honald who was instrumental in creating the park, a favorite jumping-off point on The Dalles’ Riverfront Trail.
