blocked point-after attempt, Soldotna went into halftime up by two scores. Soldotna head coach Galen Brantley Jr. said he was pleased with his quarterback. “I thought Brooks managed the game well tonight. He’s going to make corrections and only get better for us,” Brantley Jr. said. Furlong carried the momentum into the second half, sparking another Soldotna scoring drive by intercepting Roth’s pass while diving across the middle of the field. “That was a great play,” Brantley Jr. said. The Stars pitched the shutout by bending but never breaking on defense. SoHi allowed 182 yards on the ground and 56 through the air. That was more than enough to back up a typically dominant evening rushing the ball. The Stars rushed 36 times for 312 yards, with Gibbs rushing 10 times for 96 yards and Ty Fenton toting the ball 10 times for
93 yards. SoHi stretched the lead to 28-0 in the third quarter on scoring runs from Fenton and Gibbs, then a Gibbs’ 13yard scamper capped the scoring in the fourth quarter. Ferris racked up 109 yards rushing on 23 carries to lead the Moose, running through Soldotna defenders, around would-be tacklers and using his speed to gain extra yards. Ferris leads a group of young talent in which Palmer head coach Rod Christiansen sees potential. “As a team we’ve got to go out there and compete every play. There’s a lot of great efforts going on out there,” said Christiansen. Ferris broke off gains of 14 and 18 yards during the game’s first drive. He led the Moose running attack throughout the whole game. Roth was able to find success later in the game, completing 4 of 6 passes in the fourth quarter, including a 32yard deep ball to Darion Angol. “It’s a group that can be successful. They need to believe and follow and get after it,” said Christiansen. The Moose lost to a 2013 state champion for the second week in a
row, after falling to the large-schools winner West Anchorage last week, the medium-schools titleholder Soldotna was able to get the best of the Moose on their home field on Friday. Though they shared a conference for many years and met once each season, the recent reclassifications makes this game a rarity, though both schools boast proud and successful programs built around their success in the running game. This matchup was no different than classic Palmer-Soldotna Northern Lights Conference games. “It was a dogfight,” Brantley said. Friday Stars 33, Moose 0 Soldotna Palmer

hard the first 2K, just to get them up front leading, so they can get a feel for leading and getting faster,” Thomet said. Thomet’s personal best in a 5K race is 14:42, set last fall at the George Fox Invitational in Oregon, and he said he took the lead just past the halfway point. “It’s pretty much how I wanted it to go,” Thomet said. “I was thinking that the Theisen brothers would be going out hard because I was thinking that they wanted to get PRs, but they also kinda stayed back at the beginning. “We have this duel with Kenai and West Valley and some other schools, so we try to run the race as good as we can.” Theisen said he realized trying to beat Thomet would be a tall order, so he instead set his sights on Jordan. “He was my main goal,” Theisen said. “I saw his time from the Bartlett meet, and he ran under 16 minutes, so I wanted to stay with him. I just couldn’t kick it at the end.” Tsalteshi Invitational 5 kilometers Girls Team scores 1) Colony 95, 2) West 102, 3) Homer 110, 4) Soldotna 115, 5) Kenai 124, 6) South 170, 7) East 186, 8) Eagle River 189, 9) Chugiak 208, 10) Service 218, 11) Kodiak 259, 12) Grace Christian 316, 13) Dimond 340, 14) Palmer 349, 15) Bethel 427, 16) Nome 451. 0-1 in the league and 0-2 overall. With 8:33 left in the fourth quarter, Isagani Galindez tied the game at 20 with a 3-yard touchdown run. Galindez then put the Bears up 22-20 with a run for a two-point conversion. Homer then drove all the way down to Kodiak’s 6-yard line, but Kodiak was able to recover a fumble with 2:54 left. The Bears then picked up one first down and ran out the clock. Kodiak struck first in the game, but Josh Fisk answered with a 61-yard scoring dash for a 6-6 game at the end of one quarter. Kodiak again took the lead in the second quarter, but Connor Seay caught a 34-yard touchdown pass from Sheldon Hutt, then Hutt ran in the conversion for a 14-all game at the half. Homer took its first lead of the game on a 1-yard run by Fisk, who ran 17 times for 124 yards, with 5:29 left in the third quarter. Eielson 51, Seward 0 The host Ravens cruised to a Greatland Conference victory to move to 1-0 in the league and 2-0 overall. Seward fell to 0-1 and 1-1. Eielson did not have senior Anthony Griffith, one of the top running backs in the state, available due to a lower-body injury. But junior Kalib Dunlap picked up the slack, scoring twice and rushing for 190 yards on 10 carries. Eielson’s defense also was dominant, getting 11 sacks against Seward quarterback Alex Pahno. Logano notches Bristol victory HANK KURZ Jr. AP Sports Writer
BRISTOL, Tenn. — Joey Logano is looking more and more like a Sprint Cup title contender. Logano surged past Matt Kenseth with 44 laps to go and won for the first time in his career at Bristol Motor Speedway on Saturday night, foiling the 2003 series champion’s gambling attempt to secure a spot in NASCAR’s playoffs. Logano, just 24, became the fifth driver this season to win three times, joining the Hendrick Motorsports trio of Jeff Gordon, Jimmie Johnson and Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Penske Racing teammate Brad Keselowski, who finished second. Is there a message in that heading into the Chase for the championship in two weeks? “That we can win the thing,” Logano said. Logano had never won more
than one race in a season before this year, and has doubled his career victory total. He also added a cherished notch by winning at Bristol, which bills itself as the world’s fastest half-mile. “I feel like the Bristol night race is maybe the third or fourth biggest race of the year,” he said. “Just the atmosphere before the race, if it doesn’t pump you up, nothing does. It’s just the baddest mamma jamma race track ever built.” He gained the top spot when Kenseth elected to stay on the track when most of the field pitted after a caution flag with 67 laps to go, picking track position and fresh air over new tires. It seemed like a strategy that could work, especially if he could stay in the high groove that gave drivers decidedly more speed off the corners all weekend on the 0.533-mile oval. But the Penske Racing teammates quickly proved it faulty.
