TIMELINE Deep, protected waters made the Kitsap and Olympic peninsulas ideal sites for defense installations. The peninsulas have long played a vital role in the nation’s defense. 1846: President Polk appoints a joint commission of Army and Navy officers to identify sites from San Diego to Puget Sound appropriate for defense fortifications. 1866: The U.S. acquires a section of land for military purposes on Marrowstone Island. This is the future site of Fort Flagler. 1877: Lt. Ambrose Wyckoff identifies Sinclair Inlet as an ideal location for a naval station. 1889: U.S. War Department acquires land at Manchester, the future site of the Manchester Navy Fuel Depot. 1891: Naval Station Puget Sound established at Bremerton.
1897: U.S. Army establishes Fort Flagler on Marrowstone Island and Fort Worden in Port Townsend. These forts, with Fort Casey on Whidbey Island, comprise the Triangle of Fire designed to protect the region and its military installations from invasion attempts by sea. 1901: Naval Station Puget Sound renamed Navy Yard Puget Sound. 1903: U.S. Army establishes gun batteries at Bean Point and Middle Point on Bainbridge Island to further protect Navy Yard Puget Sound. 1914: Torpedo testing station established at Keyport.

1938: Manchester Navy Fuel Depot established. 1941-45: Navy Yard Puget Sound overhauls and refits 26 battleships, 18 aircraft carriers, 13 cruisers, and 79 destroyers during World War II. 1945: Navy Yard Puget Sound is designated Puget Sound Naval Shipyard. 1942: Naval Support Base Bangor established.
1956-58: U.S. Army establishes Nike missile launch sites in Poulsbo and on Bainbridge Island. The Poulsbo site was decommissioned in 1950 and is now the site of the North Kitsap School District offices. The Bainbridge Island site was decommissioned in 1974 and is now Eagledale Park. 1973: First squadron of submarines carrying Trident ballistic missiles homeported at Bangor. 1977: Naval Support Base Bangor becomes Naval Submarine Base Bangor.

2004: Naval Base Kitsap is created with the merger of Naval Station Bremerton, Naval Submarine Base Bangor, and Naval Undersea Warfare Engineering Station Keyport. 2016: Naval Base Kitsap employs 15,200 military personnel, 17,600 civilian personnel and 1,000 reservists, making the largest employer in Kitsap County.
