Westport offers charter fishing, surf shops
W
estport’s charter fishing fleet starts its season in the early spring, when boats head across the bar to the fertile bottomfish grounds outside the harbor. Throughout the season, which typically runs through the end of September, most anglers bring in their limits of black rockfish with some lingcod mixed in. Halibut trips start in May. It’s a three-hour trip to the fishing grounds. Salmon seasons start in mid-June and can go through September. The early season is the best time to target the larger Chinook salmon, and midsummer anglers can enjoy adding some hard-fighting coho to their limit. Adventurous anglers can

There is no limit on these super strong and tasty fish, and on average an angler will come home with 10 or more of them. There are a number of charter operations, all of them
varying in fishing areas and costs. Your best bet for onestop shopping is the Westport Charter Boat Association website, charterwestport. com. There will you will find Web links and telephone numbers to each of the charter operations, so you can shop around for the type of vessel
and fishing you want at the price you can afford. Charter offices sell one-day fishing licenses as well. And never leave the dock without buying a derby ticket. For a $5 or $10 entry, you could find yourself going home with a $500 prize for the largest lingcod, halibut or salmon of the day. And some of the most consistent surf north of California is located right off the west side of Westport. A new surf resort is opening in Westport on Memorial Day weekend: Loge at the Sands (logecamps. com).
