t 12 she was diagnosed with scoliosis and was forced to wear a back brace. At 23 she endured spinal fusion, a procedure that lasted more than half a day, and afterwards had to relearn how to walk. Now, Stephanie Jarstad wants others with a less-than-straight spine to know that it’s OK to be different. “Own your uniqueness,” she said. “Everybody has something that makes them feel different, even if it’s not scoliosis.” Jarstad, a Federal Way resident and regional photographer, collaborated X-rays of Jarstad’s back before and after her spinal fusion. Contributed photo with friend and fellow photographer

Tori Dickson to create a photo essay of Jarstad’s ‘S curve.’ The photos feature Jarstad before her surgery, right after her surgery and in the present day. “I’m super proud of Stephanie for how far she’s come with this part of her life and just how she owns it now,” Dickson said. “I’m really proud of those photos.” Although Dickson and Jarstad had met each other at a local Federal Way church, the two didn’t really connect until Dickson happened to volunteer to “go see a girl in the hospital.” That girl was Jarstad just after her spinal fusion, which turned her 60-degree curve into a 15-degree

curve. The surgery was a grueling 13 hours long. Jarstad woke up with some nerve damage and a numb right arm. Today, she still has some numbness in her forearm. “And this girl comes in, and I’m sitting in the hospital and I couldn’t grip a fork,” Jarstad laughed. “I just had a dead arm.” After the awkwardness of Jarstad’s mom asking Dickson to spoon-feed her daughter had dissipated, Dickson asked Jarstad if she could photograph her back. “It’s been especially interesting because I photographed her shortly [ more SCOLIOSIS, page 7 ]

Prosecutors to seek extradition in Federal Way restaurant owner’s murder case BY EVAN ELLIOTT

eelliott@fedwaymirror.com

The former owner of a Federal Way restaurant who’s accused of murdering a Japanese businessman, tabulating fraudulent checks on his account and fleeing to Japan following the crimes could face extradition and stand trial in the U.S. On Thursday, June 30, Kyung Hee Dowdle — who’s been charged with the first-degree murder of Toshio Ota as well as with four counts of forgery — failed to appear in King County Superior Court for her arraignment, according to King County Prosecuting Attorney Office spokesman Dan Donohoe.

Dowdle’s bail has been set at $5 million. Dowdle previously owned Izakaya in Federal Way, a restaurant in which Ota invested. Dowdle reportedly fled the U.S. for Osaka, Japan, in April 10, 2011, following Ota’s murder, which charging documents from last month say took place between March 12 and March 16, 2011. After Dowdle’s absence from her arraignment, Donohoe said in an e-mail that prosecutors will seek extradition. Since it’s international, the extradition will be handled by the U.S. Department of Justice’s Office of International Affairs. Donohoe said there has been contact with the Office of International Affairs, but Dowdle has yet to be located or arrested. [ more DOWDLE, page 3 ]

When I was a new advocate, I believed that people with convictions (where there was “proof” of domestic violence) would have a hard time gaining unsupervised access to their children. It turns out that I was very naive indeed. A 2005 study of the King County Court System showed that twice as many abusive men pursue custody of their children than non-abusive men and won fifty percent of the time. The research brought up that having an attorney made a big difference in these cases. The abuser would have an attorney and would repeatedly bring his victim to court, exhausting her emotionally and financially until she gave up. Some women had the resources to hire an attorney but found themselves trying to explain why certain behaviors were scary or threatening only to be made to feel “paranoid” and then watch as important safety considerations were bartered away. Even with legal counsel, many women ended up with an unsafe parenting plan similar to those with no attorney; they were just $10,000 poorer in the end. These examples illuminate the importance of attorneys who understand the dynamics of domestic violence and who are willing to work with people in trauma or who are otherwise fearful and exhausted. The Domestic Abuse Women’s Network (DAWN) and the Eastside Legal Assistance Program (ELAP) have formed a partnership so that survivors of domestic violence and their advocate can work together with an attorney to begin the family law case. Working with an attorney trained in domestic violence along with a legal advocate skilled in translating the battering of the survivor into a legal framework can tremendously increase safe outcomes for survivors and their children. DAWN and ELAP’s services are available at no cost to the client eliminating one more barrier to a safer environment for them and their children. 38-year-old man was in critical condition Tuesday morning after being shot around midnight in Federal Way. Federal Way police spokeswoman Cathy Schrock said an unknown suspect shot the man in the 28600 block of 25th Place South, a residential area behind the Villa Capri apartments. She said the shooting occurred after “some type of altercation between the victim and suspect.” The victim was transported to Harborview Medical Center with life-threatening injuries. This shooting is among more than 20 shoot-

ings that have occurred in Federal Way this year. In May, the Mirror reported the city had 23 assault with a firearm cases. Last year’s total count was 24. Five murders have also taken place in Federal Way this year – all of them shootings. In February, 16-year-old Wesley Gennings was shot in the back of his head while sitting in a vehicle. In April, 19-year-old Jeffrey McLaren was found between two vehicles with multiple gunshot wounds. In May, three men were shot in the span of 48 hours. All of them are presumed to be sepa-

rate cases. Alex J. Kelley, 26, was found with a gunshot wound to his back in an apartment and townhome complex. Police found Frank Cohens Jr., 27, slumped over in a vehicle, deceased from a gunshot wound. And 30-year-old Adam Gutierrez was shot multiple times while walking his dog in a residential area. Anyone with information on the most recent shooting, or any of the aforementioned murders, is encouraged to contact the Federal Way Police Department at 253-835-2121 or on the department’s anonymous tip website, www.safecityfw. com.

Police seek man who robbed Federal Way credit union BY RAECHEL DAWSON rdawson@fedwaymirror.com

Federal Way police are searching for a man who robbed the Red Canoe Credit Union in Federal Way last week. The suspect is described as a white male in his 40s to 50s with a heavy build, standing between 5 feet 8 inches and 5 feet 10 inches tall and sporting a thick mustache. Video surveillance from the robbery shows the suspect wearing a black baseball hat with neon yellow graphics on the bill and white jeans with ripped knees and a dark zip-up hoodie. He carried a red tool bag and wore glasses during the robbery. At about 1:30 p.m. on Monday, June 27, the suspect walked into Red Canoe Credit Union (33616 Pacific Highway S.) and went to a teller. He placed a note in front of the teller that read, “This is not a joke please give me your 50s and 100s no marked bills

no alarms I have a gun but I don’t want to hurt anyone.” The teller retrieved all the money in the drawer, which consisted of one stack of $100 dollar bills and “fifty dollar denominations,” the report states. The suspect grabbed the note and money and placed it into his red tool bag. After he left, the teller activated the alarm to alert police. Police interviewed a different teller who noticed a suspicious male in the bank just before the robbery. The teller told police she asked the male if she could help him and he said, “I’m waiting for someone.” “[The teller] thought this was suspicious because there was only one other customer and her husband in the bank and this male was not associated with them,” the documents state. A still shot of the robbery suspect, taken from surveillance footage The FBI has since been notified of the at Red Canoe Credit Union in Federal Way on June 27. Photo courtesy of the robbery. July 4 fireworks calls down from 2015, police say BY EVAN ELLIOTT eelliott@fedwaymirror.com

When it comes to fireworks, Federal Way residents were on better behavior this year than they were in 2015. “I am very pleased to report that there were no significant firework-related injuries or fires during this Fourth of July holiday period,” Federal Way Chief of Police Andy Hwang told the City Council at the latter’s regular meeting Tuesday.

[ DOWDLE from page 1] Charging documents detail probable cause for charges related to events happening in 2011 between March 12 and March 16, but the events culminating in Ota’s death began that January. According to the documents, Dowdle was frustrated about being removed from Ota’s personal will, so she and her roommate approached a friend to gauge his interest in killing, or helping to kill, Ota. Then, on March 14, 2011, court records say Dowdle and another person cashed a $10,000 check

Hwang said that from June 27 until noon on July 5 this year, police received 215 fireworksrelated calls. That number is down from the 270 calls made during the same time frame in 2015. Fireworks-related calls were also down on July 4 alone, with 110 calls coming in compared to 148 last year. Total calls to police for July 4 this year were down to 339 from 421 in 2015. “We’re very fortunate as a community,” Hwang

The following day, Dowdle had a former employee — who had not been paid in twoand-a-half years of work for Dowdle — withdraw $4,000 for Dowdle and $2,000 for herself under Ota’s account with Washington Federal Savings. The next day, Dowdle’s former employee had a friend cash another check, this one for $4,000, but it was denied by Washington Federal Savings officials who claimed the signature

on the check did not match Ota’s. Interviews with that former employee revealed Dowdle had disclosed to her all the ways Dowdle could potentially kill Ota

said of the comparatively modest call volume. Fireworks have been illegal in Federal Way for 23 years. Hwang said that police this year confiscated about 200 pounds of them in the June 27 to July 5 window. More officers were working the streets on Independence Day than would have been on an average day, Hwang said, since the department prepared for the increased number of calls the Fourth of July traditionally generates with additional staff.

National’s 10/11’s repeat, 12’s feature walk-off semifinal classic BY EVAN ELLIOTT eelliott@fedwaymirror.com

F

ederal Way National’s 10- and 11 year-old all-stars did it again, defending their championship from last year with another District 10 title. It wasn’t without a little drama though. After steamrolling into the championship round by beating South Hill, Soundview and Bonney LakeSumner, the squad lost to Auburn, forcing a winnertake-all second game. The Auburn team racked up eight runs in the first three innings of the initial contest, taking advantage of some iffy National defense. But with their backs against the wall, National’s defense stepped it up in game two. After allowing five runs in the deciding game’s first two innings, National allowed just one hit and kept Auburn scoreless for the final four frames. Still, the team needed a little magic in the bottom of the sixth to clinch a berth in the state tournament. The wizardry started with a leadoff double from Braden Bedell, followed by throwing errors

by Auburn that allowed Bedell to plate the tying run. With a raucous crowd, shifted momentum and the bases loaded with no outs, Jaiden Orchard delivered the knockout punch as he laced a line drive into the left-center gap. Kayla Johnson scored easily with her hands in the air to complete the walk-off win, finishing the game at 6-5. The next stop for National is Clarkston, Washington, for the state tournament. National will play Greater Richland Little League (District 12) at 10 a.m. on July 23; Greater Richland knocked off Pasco in its own championship round. The championship team is managed by Danny Graham and is assisted by Doug Orchard and Bill Bedell. The team’s players are R’Mani Adams, Isaiah Afework, Braden Bedell, Jack Bergstrom, Jonah Buchan, Brett Ellingson, Jack Erickson, Aidan Graham, Isaiah Henning, Kayla Johnson, Kenzo Kimura, Jayden Lee, Jaiden Orchard and Richie Osses-Watson. the game-tying base-knock with two outs in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game at four and force extra innings. In the lone extra inning, it looked like Steel Lake would coast to victory after Cody Gaerttner roped a shot that plated two and Derek Butler knocked in another run for good measure — making it 7-4 Steel Lake headed into the bottom of the seventh. Ayden Vega got things going for National and ended up scoring on a wild pitch to get to 7-5, and shortly thereafter Elijah Morales strode up to the plate with two runners on. With one swing of the bat the game was over: the ball sailed over the fence and National was walking off via Morales’ three-run blast with an 8-7 win and a trip to the district championship (at 6 p.m. on July 9) in hand. She was diagnosed with scoliosis as many teenage girls are – during a routine scoliosis screening in the girls locker room. “It was an awkward day because everyone’s like, ‘Do I wear a bathing suit or a sports bra?,’” Jarstad recalled of the experience, which was over 15 years ago. Then the ladies doing the screening crowded around her. “They were like, ‘Yep, she’s definitely got a curve,’” she said. Jarstad wore her back brace, which was about an eighth of an inch thick, for a year and a half before she broke her arm and stopped wearing it entirely. “True to dramatic teenage form, I thought having a back brace was the worst thing that could ever happen to

the country, the case was reclassified as a murder investigation and turned over to the homicide department. On April 13, a friend of Dowdle reported that Dowdle had left for Japan on April 10. Despite making some progress through interviews and discovering incriminating bank statements, detectives didn’t catch a substantial break in the case until November 9, 2012, when Ota’s body was

What I would tell my 13-year-old self with scoliosis: Are other kids’ spines shaped like their initials? No. You’re cool. So what if kids make fun of you while you put your back brace on in the locker room after P.E.? Locker rooms are weird for every middle-schooler. Don’t worry about not being able to wear crop tops with your back brace. Over-sized sweaters and baggy shirts will make a comeback in 2015. You’re just a hipster. #beforeitwascool Don’t avoid hugging people and them being weirded out by your back brace. Embrace the brace. Tell people to punch you in the stomach and that you have abs of steel. No, he’s not making fun of your back brace. He just likes you. Guys are super into the damsel-in-distress thing. The friends you laugh and cry with about teenage woes of back braces or body insecurity are the friends you’ll laugh with and cry with forever. Keep them. Don’t fret about being short. You’ll have a growth spurt after puberty when you get back surgery in your 20s. Don’t do drugs to fit in. You’ll have more than enough stories to tell about hallucinating on your pain meds. People spend a lot of money on Spanx and corsets to suck it in. So, I mean, most of yours was covered by insurance. Think of your back brace as a history lesson in 16th century women and fashion.

me,” she said. “As if glasses, braces and frizzy hair were not enough, I had to tack on a physical deformity and a back brace. I had to spend puberty in my very own turtle shell.” While Jarstad was teased a little – people would call her “Scoli” or knock on her brace and run away – she said most of the insecurity came from within. One day while she was sad, she decided she was going to make a change in her attitude and her outlook on life. “I started being like, ‘Yeah, I do have a back brace. Punch me in the stomach, feel my abs of steel,’ and then people thought that was really funny,” Jarstad said. “It became less of a bullying situation and more of a, ‘Yeah, she has this unique thing that is quirky and funny.’” Jarstad went on to become a gymnast, a diver and a selfproclaimed “adrenaline junkie” before succumbing to the pain she was in and the fear of what it would take to fix it. “I had a lot of back pain, and then the rotation of my ribs was causing some lung compression,” Jarstad said. “I would get a little more fatigued, and I wouldn’t say I noticed that too much, but I would say I couldn’t run long distances. Then some digestive issues too, because your intestines are in a compressed space, and then I’d get tension headaches.” And while healing from her surgery took time, Jarstad is as active today as ever. found floating in the Columbia River near Vantage, Washington. Examinations in June 2013 showed Ota died of blunt force trauma to the head. In October 2013, Seattle detectives interviewed a man and a woman who said they helped Dowdle “move a heavy suitcase to Eastern Washington during the month of March, 2011.” The couple told investigators the suitcase was pushed down an embank-

ment that led to a “swift” current that ran roughly to where Ota’s remains were found. If Dowdle is indeed in Japan, bringing her back to stand trial will require prosecutors to invoke the extradition treaty between Japan and the U.S., which was activated in 1980 “to make more effective the cooperation of the two countries for the repression of crime.”

“I recognize that beauty comes from within, but I also have a new appreciation for the resiliency of my body,” she said. “I appreciate modern medicine and the miracle of what my body is still capable of.” Jarstad recently returned from a backpacking (yes, backpacking) trip that took her through seven countries in Central America. “I carried everything on this titanium back,” she said. “It was a huge accomplishment for me. We cliff-jumped, rappelled down six waterfalls, white-water rafted, camped on the beach and kayaked. “Five years ago, I never though this would be possible.” Since learning more about scoliosis, Jarstad stumbled across a local chapter of the support group called Curvy Girls Scoliosis and has spoken at one of their meetings. “That was cool, just to I guess connect with the past and with these girls and wondering what they cared about, what was important to them, what they might be dealing with through their struggles,” she said. “This information wasn’t really available to me when I was dealing with it when I was young.” For more information about scoliosis, visit www.curvygirlsscoliosis.com. Priorities after rape need to be different The article, “Father looks for answers in daughter’s terrifying Federal Way rape” (the Mirror, July 1, 2016) disturbed me on so many levels. Shame on Federal Way police spokesperson Cathy Schrock for choosing to present this family as she has instead of focusing on the crime. Double shame on her for the personal information she revealed and/or her perception of this father’s relationship with his family and their living situation. Shame also on the Federal Way Mirror for publishing the ridiculous and unnecessary quotes provided by Schrock, for choosing to portray this family as you have and for throwing a little “dirt” into your story. I receive a lot of questions, and I like to share and answer them every so often since others may have similar questions. Here are a few: Q. Why do you dislike the Performing Arts and Events Center? A. Actually, I like it. But at $32 million, I don’t think it’s the highest priority for City Hall or the community. A full-time, full-service, city-managed Senior Center, as well as resources for the homeless, strike me as more important. Also, the financing plan appears flawed and will likely result in the city spending more Federal Way taxpayer dollars instead of using grants, tax credits or other sources that were originally planned. Q. I get tired of all the political correctness, don’t you? A. No. “Political correctness” is a catchphrase for good manners and the inclusion of others’ views and beliefs. Q. Do you think building official Marty Gil-

lis would have been fired if she were a man? A. I don’t know, but I’ve been surprised at how often I have been asked this question. Q. What did you think of Brian Wilson’s response to your column about favoritism? A. Some of it was a little on the misleading side. Wilson appeared to try and distance himself, and his connection to John Fairbanks, by writing that the appointment of the mayor’s friend to the Civil Service Commission occurred during his “tenure” as acting city manager. However, the connection is much more direct. According to an October 27, 2009, letter from Human Resources Director Mary McDougal, Wilson actually appointed Fairbanks to an alternate position on the commission and had the authority to appoint him as a voting member when a quorum was needed. t’s hard to watch someone, or something, you love go through a rough patch. I’ve been a Federal Way resident my whole life. I grew up on the playgrounds of Nautilus Elementary and attended school there, which included all the carnivals, skate nights and ice cream socials — not to mention ruining my shoes on the “red field” every year, which sadly no longer exists. I played all the sports – Boys & Girls Club basketball, Federal Way American Little League (which my father helped build into what it was) and wished every year I could be a Federal Way Hawk – but my parents didn’t allow football until seventh grade. I attended Sacajawea Middle School, and those were some interesting years. Middle school – what an age. But that’s where I met most of my lifelong friends, essentially my “adopted brothers.” Finally, I reached Federal Way High School and had a lot of success as an athlete. I held multiple leadership positions and only got suspended one time (sorry, mom). More importantly for me, everything I love about Federal Way really crystallized after those four years, combined as they were with everything I experienced in my youth. I could go on about those 18 years of my life, before I turned to a new chapter at Western Washington University in Bellingham, but the one thing I would ultimately keep coming back to is my love for Federal Way. It feels like I’m drawn here. And it’s because of the people. Sometimes love breaks your heart, as I’m sure some of the turmoil in the city earlier this year did to you — someone else that loves this great, diverse city — like it did mine. Make no mistake about it, your heart broke because you care.

been victimized in such a manner as this young woman, and look for a father who just sits back and does nothing. I hope you don’t find it. This father is attempting to help his daughter the only way he knows how, and as many other fathers would do, trying to solve this problem to help his child feel safe again. Trying to get the word out and prevent this from happening to anyone else. There is nothing wrong with that. It is the most basic and natural instinct a parent has. It is not our business where the father stays when he comes into town. Who cares about the relationship between family members? I do not. It is not pertinent to this story of a stranger raping a young woman. Here is what I care about: Who is this monster who raped this child? It sounds like the Federal Way police

have some leads. Are there any other description details that can be given to the public? What is currently being done to catch him and prevent this terrible crime from occurring to anyone else’s beautiful child? And please tell me there are some amazing resources, compassion, kindness and protection being provided to this family, most especially to this child who is “Not ready to leave the freakin’ house.” I wouldn’t be ready to leave my house either; I would be terrified. Federal Way police has had a very busy summer thus far. Despite the father’s assertion, the officers I have met do see past color, see past religion, and see past which part of the neighborhood you live in. I have the utmost confidence in the Federal Way Police Department’s skills and abilities to

find and arrest this piece of garbage. My only hope is that solving this terrible crime is as much of a priority to the Federal Way police and to Mayor Jim Ferrell as the other, more publicized crimes that are currently in the forefront of Federal Way news, and that finding and arresting this coward provides the young woman some regained peace and security.

City’s fireworks rules not doing job Congratulations Federal Way for another epic FAIL regarding fireworks in our city. Supposedly there is a fireworks ban in the city, which every year seems to basically

go unnoticed. Every year it seems to get worse near me, with the same culprits continuing to terrorize the animals in the neighborhood. I think the city is to blame. A $100 fine? That is hardly a deterrent to someone who probably spends five times that amount on fireworks. Why doesn’t the City Council step up to the plate if they truly want to keep fireworks quiet: have a $500 or $1,000 fine for FIRST offenders. That just might get someone’s attention. I know the police can’t possibly keep the peace when so many show utter disregard for the laws. Give them the tool to put an end to it once and for all or erase the law totally.

Q&A with Mr. FW: Presidential apathy and sports availability Q

: Mr. Federal Way, you haven’t really said anything about the presidential race. What gives? You have an opinion on everything else, but not the biggest issue of the year? A: Mr. Federal Way has some opinions on the people running to be the next commander in chief of this great country, but they’re frankly pretty far down on his priority list. You see, Mr. Federal Way can assemble enough half-forgotten snippets of “Schoolhouse Rock!” videos to form a fairly clear recollection that the presidency is far less impactful on our day-to-day lives than our local government’s activities are. Sure, who the president is matters in Federal Way if things go absolutely udders-up: if we get so deep into another poorly thoughtout war for questionable reasons that the draft is reinstated, or if riots break out and get so squirrelly that the feds send in the clear-shield-wielding peacekeeping force. If some other seismic event unfolds to the point that only a strong, singular entity can respond — then yeah, I guess it matters whether our president is Jim “Remember

[ ROEGNER from page 8]

Q. Why were you critical of the mayor and City Council for scheduling public meetings for the methanol plant and after the murders? A. Because both were good political theater, but questionable governance. The public was “used” as political props for next year’s election – the hearings were for political gain. The mayor and council had already decided what they were going to do prior to the emergency meeting on the methanol plant. Two council members had testified the night before at the hearing in Tacoma, and the mayor sent a city attorney to the same meeting to express his opposition. There was no policy reason for the meeting. Regarding the murders, the public came away with the feeling they would be part of some vast, community-wide committee that would play a role in public safety. At best, there will be a very small committee. In neither case was an “emergency” council

Me?” Webb or George “You Don’t Remember Me” Pataki. Before that, however, while udders are still correctly pointed toward the ground, Mr. Federal Way’s life is going to be far more affected by his City Council members, state representatives, and even school board members. Heck, the president has far less immediate impact on our lives than even our Sound Transit 3-approving King County Council members. In other words, good on ya for knowing who you’re going to vote for in the presidential election. But you lose pretty much all the points you just earned if you aren’t sure yet who you like in your District 30 state House of Representatives race. Q: Mr. Federal Way, baseball is a snoozefest but there’s nothing else on. How should we kill time during the dog days of summer? A: Mr. Federal Way is with you in feeling

meeting necessary. The council appears to have pushed the mayor into both. He was right to be reluctant, although he still gained politically. Next year the mayor and council members will make sure they campaign on both of these issues, even though Federal Way’s impact on the methanol decision was minimal and no one has been arrested for the murders. Q. What did you think about the mayor firing Community Development Director Michael Morales? A. I think there’s more to the story. Q. With everything that’s going on in this town, what does it say about a community when the top-ranked story for the week is about a doughnut shop opening and the second-ranked story is about the same doughnut shop’s delayed opening? A. It says we like donuts! Q. The city keeps saying the new downtown park was under budget and you keep disagreeing. Why?

A. Because the city keeps leaving out an important word: “adjusted.” The city kept revising the budget to a larger amount as things got more expensive. It’s easy to balance your budget when all you have to do is raise your spending limit. They need to say the project came in at or under the “adjusted budget” to be accurate. On one final note, I want to congratulate Mayor Jim Ferrell, council members and city staff on the opening of the downtown park. Despite the cost, it is an attractive addition to our downtown and it fulfills a campaign promise. I do, however, wonder what happened to the chessboard and pieces.

a little confused as to how he’s supposed to tune out in front of the tube. We’re two months away from the Seahawks playing, which is an eternity when you’ve gotten used to the on-demand gratification of the internet era. The Mariners — even if you, like Mr. Federal Way, somehow enjoy watching a game that’s best described as “three hours of waiting for something to happen” — have returned to their rightful place as not awful enough for humor but not good enough for entertainment. The Sonics are, news flash, still gone, but at least the ghost of the franchise just lost its head to the Golden State Warriors (on a related note, the bigname NBA player moves this year have involved Kevin Durant, Dwyane Wade, Derrick Rose, Pau Gasol, Rajon Rondo and Dwight Howard, and Ray Allen is making headlines because he may sign with a team as well. Apparently, it is 2011 right now). There’s Seattle Sounders soccer/futbol/

which Mr. Bob Roegner wrote his column in the June 24 issue of the Mirror. He gave several good points on how to stop murders, but in the end he said the most effective way to stop violence is to take guns away from the people. True. If it were possible to take ALL the guns away from ALL the people then people would have to use knives to kill each other. A famous point is that “guns kill people,” but it would be more accurate to say that “people kill people.” I think it would be more effective if we spent more time working with people rather than trying to take all the guns away. Roegner talked about Australia passing strict gun control laws and said that they haven’t had any mass violence since. He failed to mention all the places in this country where they have strict gun control laws and the violence continues.

kickygoal/whatever, but this is still America and we still don’t care about it. There’s also the WNBA and its Seattle Storm, but that team’s play is making the Mariners look like ultra-competitive winners. So Mr. Federal Way isn’t really sure. He’s given to understand that Netflix is resurrecting “The Gilmore Girls,” so there’s that, and if that show can be half as good as the reboot of “Full House” then we may actually have something to riot about. I mean, we, as a culture, can stumble into brilliance like “Breaking Bad” and “Game of Thrones” and still churn out garbage like “Fuller House”? Send in the clear-shield-wielding peacekeeping force to crack some TVwriter skulls. Q: Mr. Federal Way, are you excited for the July 9 opening of Town Square Park? A: None of your business.

Got something for Mr. Federal Way? Email your questions, complaints and hate mail to mrfederalway@federalwaymirror.com.

Chicago is one example. You can call it the murder capitol of the U.S. And they do not allow guns. We can also look at the places in this country where we have had mass murders. Look at a grade school, look at a high school, look at a university, look at a hospital, look at a theatre, look at a night club. What do all

these places have in common? They are gun-free zones. It only makes sense. If a demented person wants to kill as many people as possible, he would certainly pick a place where there would not be any guns.

Isn’t there something to be said about that? It says you’ve taken ownership of your community. It’s what makes this place special. When you own something and you love it, you don’t let it go — especially not when adversity strikes. That’s kind of what I meant when I said my love for Federal Way became clear after high school, when it was time to “leave.” I was able to step back and look at the city from an outside perspective to truly realize the bonds I had created and the longing I had

to see those people who make you feel at home every day. That’s what the city of Federal Way is. It makes me feel at home every day. I suspect it does for you too. Rough patches only last so long. On May 11, I tweeted: “I’m not giving up on you Fed.” I urge you to do the same.

In The Kitchen Sandwiches and wraps, oh my!

By Ray Still

Turkey Avocado Sandwiches

By Ana Karen Perez Guzman

Strawberry Chicken Wrap Ingredients: • 4 tortilla wraps (any kind will do) • 8 strawberries, chopped • 4 cups mixed greens • 4 tablespoons balsamic vinaigrette • 4 ounces goat cheese, crumbled (can substitute feta cheese) • 2 cooked chicken breasts, chopped

Ingredients: • Artisan bread, sliced no more than 3/8 of an inch thick • Favorite thick cut bacon (two pieces per sandwich) • Favorite thin sliced turkey (between four and six slices, depending how thick you want the sandwich) • Favorite provolone cheese (between three and four slices per sandwich) • Two large avocados • Butter • Frying pan/panini griddle Directions: • If you’re using a frying pan to eventually heat your sandwich, take butter out to warm so it spreads easily. • Begin cooking the bacon to desired crispiness. Once bacon in done, cut slices

so they fit on the sandwich without much hanging outside the bread. • Mash the avocados so it can be used as a spread, but leave some chunks for taste and extra texture. Spread evenly on both slices of bread. • Arrange cheese on one slice of bread. This will be the top of the sandwich. Don’t let much cheese be outside the bread. • Arrange turkey on other slice, again without having any hand outside the bread. • Arrange bacon on the turkey, then close sandwich with cheese on top. • If using a frying pan, spread butter on top and bottom of sandwich and place in pan. Cook both sides until cheese is melted and bread is golden brown. • If using panini griddle, start toasting sandwich first, and before the bread is toasted to your liking, spread butter on top of bread and keep toasting until bread is crispy and golden brown.

Directions: • Mix together the strawberries, mixed greens, vinaigrette, cheese and chicken. • Put about a cup of mixture in each wrap, and wrap up. Enjoy!

Italian Sandwiches Bonus: Ice Cream Sandwich Using your favorite ice cream & cookies -- place ice cream on top of the bottom of one of the cookies. Then using the other cookie, place on top of the ice cream as a lid and enjoy!

Ingredients: • Ciabatta rolls • Boar’s Head black forest ham, salami • Provolone • Tomato (sliced) • Basil

For Italian Sauce: • Red Wine Vinegar • Mayonnaise • Olive oil • Italian dressing seasoning Directions: For Italian Sauce: • Mix equal parts of ingredients until smooth.

Taste test to see what you should add more of. Sandwich Assembly: • Warm rolls in the oven, then spread sauce on both sides. • Place meats and cheese, as much as you desire on one half. Top with tomato slices and basil. Enjoy!

Federal Way to hold first bodybuilding show FROM STAFF REPORTS

Officers from the Federal Way Police Department and others provided “Waste Watch” training to Waste Management drivers on June 30. Waste Watch teaches sanitation workers to act as another set of eyes and ears for public safety as they cover their routes over public roads. “The drivers are uniquely positioned to spot and report unusual situations because they drive neighborhood streets early in the morning when crimes often occur, they’re in the same neighborhood every week and many of them live in the communities they serve,” said Samantha Leeds, a spokeswoman for Waste Management. Federal Way native speaks at Write on the Sound FROM STAFF REPORTS

Federal Way native John Moe will give the keynote address, “Better Writing Through Making Yourself Miserable,” for the 31st Annual Write on the Sound writers’ conference. The conference will take place Sept. 30-Oct. 2 at the Frances Anderson Center in Edmonds, Washington. It is put on by the city of Edmonds Arts Commission. Moe is described as an “author and humorist,” and his speech will “take

a humorous and sincere look at the challenge writers and artists face when they look to themselves for motivation and inspiration.” His work has also been featured in The New York Times Magazine, The Seattle Times and Seattle Weekly, and he has authored three books. For information on the convention, registration is required and can be accessed at www.writeonthesound. com. Registration opens TuesJohn Moe day, July 18, at 9 a.m. “with affordable fees.”

Federal Way will have its first-ever all-natural, 100 percent tested, drugfree bodybuilding show from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, July 16, at the Knutzen Family Theater. Unlike what’s normally seen on ESPN and in muscle magazines, these are everyday average moms, dads, grandparents and students who commit themselves to months of training and nutrition discipline to transform their physique without commonly used over-thecounter drugs or other substances. There will be many inspiring individuals of different shapes, sizes and fitness levels, as well as some just beginning their fitness journey. There will be teen bodybuilders who are 15 years old, a 60-year-old woman competing for her first time, and Levi Plumlee, who has cerebral palsy and who used bodybuilding to help him gain control over his body and movement – most have a difficult time understanding his speech, but those who spend time with him know what he’s saying and know his burning desire to show

Having a dynamic personality combined with a mesmerizing voice he will quickly and easily induce an altered state of consciousness. In a matter of minutes the audience will be amazed and delighted when they witness a group of volunteers enter this unbelievable phenomenon called HYPNOSIS. Jerry’s professional training and many years of experience will overcome any fears and misconceptions about hypnosis. Two shows each day, July 14th-17th!

Seattle has ever been fertile ground out of which musicians grow themselves up from the dirt and into prominence. In this city of renown, Rust on the Rails plants their roots in the Northwest soil and stands evergreen tall in a land of musical giants. What sets them apart from many of their regional contemporaries is not only their convention-defying sound but also the notoriety each band member himself has achieved in --and well beyond-- the local scene. King County Fair Historic Background The King County Fair was founded in 1863 when Abraham Lincoln was president and the Washington Territory was 26 years from statehood. It began as a simple celebration of agriculture and originally took place in the Georgetown area south of Seattle. The King County Fair moved to Renton around 1900, and then to Enumclaw after World War II. The King County Fair is an honest to goodness good old fashioned county fair – with family entertain-

ment, animals, food, carnival rides, games, and all kinds of 4-H, FFA, and Grange displays surrounded by farms in a picturesque setting in the shadow of Mount Rainier. The King County Fair attracts thousands of visitors annually, predominantly from the King and Pierce counties. Today, residents of the region equate Enumclaw with a high-quality of life, beautiful scenic views of Mount Rainier, and as being home of the fair to see since 1863!

teaching beginning Irish dancers,” Walker said in a release. “All ages can enjoy this wonderful, challenging dance form. This is a unique opportunity to try it out for free!” Classes are offered on Tuesdays and Fridays, and interested attendees can attend either or both days at no cost and with no commitment. “I’ve never done this before and I may never do it again, so if you’ve always wanted to try it out, this summer is the time.” Walker said the class is great for families, adults and children, and notes that she didn’t have her own first Irish dance lesson until she was 40 years old. All classes are held at Brooklake Community Center (726 S. 356th St., across the street from Brooklake Church). Attendees are encouraged to dress for exercise — “You will get hot,” Walker said. Dance or athletic shoes work fine, but no sandals or bare feet. They should also bring a water bottle as there isn’t a drinking fountain at Brooklake Community Center. For information, email Walker at fireandiceirishdance@mac.com.

Vacant house trashed with spray paint, swastika CRIME

This week’s…

ALERT

Police Blotter The following is a sample from the Federal Way police log: Taxi driver robbed: At 1:18 a.m. on June 27 in the 2100 block of Southwest 352nd Street, a taxi driver was robbed after three juvenile males got a ride and left without paying. The males were picked up in Tacoma and driven to Federal Way. When they arrived, the occupant of the driver’s seat began to hand the driver a credit card, but then all three got out of the taxi and fled on foot. Police could not locate the suspects and could not get information from the phone number the suspects called from. Mother calls cops on son: At 1:52 a.m. on June 27 in the 31500 block of 28th Avenue South, a mother called police on her 16-year-old son because he was acting belligerent and disrespectful. The mother told police her son was aggressive, took her purse and phone, and may have caused damage to her apartment unit’s window. Police found the boy wandering the streets and booked him into a juvenile secure crisis residential center for the night. Man robbed after night of drinking: At 7:43 a.m. on June 27 in the 31200 block of Pacific Highway South, a man was robbed of his shoes and wallet. He told police he was “drinking with a group of unknown homeless guys” when, sometime during the night, he passed out behind a Chevron and woke up across the street on the side of a Jack in the Box. He told police his identification, debit, credit and plasma cards were missing from his wallet. He said he didn’t know who took his

belongings or how he got across the street. Burglar damages office building: At 12:10 p.m. on June 27 at 1832 S. 324th Place, it was discovered that a suspect had damaged the door to the main entrance of a retail/office building over the weekend. While the suspect didn’t gain access to the building, he/she did damage the frame and surrounding wood work. Video surveillance wasn’t available, but police took photos of the damage. Missing man found sitting in car (all day): At 4:09 p.m. on June 27 in the 3200 block of Pacific Highway South, a man was involuntarily committed after a witness called to report the man had been sitting in his car in the same place for most of the day. Police discovered the man was incoherent and did not know where he was. After checking the man’s records, they discovered he was listed as a missing endangered person out of Federal Way. They contacted the man’s nearest known relative, who lives in Alaska, and she told them the man had been diagnosed with a mental illness and was being treated. While waiting to be transferred to St. Francis Hospital for a mental evaluation, the man urinated on himself. Fireworks spark tree: At 8:50 p.m. on June 27 in the 2500 block of South 286th Place, an unknown person unlawfully ignited a firework, which ignited a nearby tree. Minor busted for liquor possession: At 9:46 a.m. on June 28 at 33914 19th Ave. SW, an officer was flagged down by Federal Way Public Schools security following a theft at Saghalie Middle School. There were several suspicious people at Saghalie Park. As the officer spoke to the group, he/ she saw an object sticking out of a backpack, which contained an “AR look-a-like weapon wrapped

in a blanket.” The owner of the backpack, a 19-year-old, also had a bottle of liquor in open view. Officers noted no one in the group was over 21. The 19-year-old admitted the liquor was his and was cited and released. Police checked the .22 caliber rifle, which was cleared and not confiscated. However, another member of the group was arrested for a felony warrant from Juvenile Detention Center. Mom reports daughter’s sexual assault: At 10:25 a.m. on June 28 in the 3200 block of 7th Place South, a mother called police to report her daughter’s father molested her daughter at a Federal Way residence. The mother and daughter have since moved out of state and reported the sexual assault by phone. Teen caught huffing, walking in road: At 2:32 p.m. on June 28 in the 34900 block of Enchanted Parkway South, several passersby reported a male huffing paint, walking into traffic and laying in the roadway. When police arrived, they saw the male standing on the sidewalk. There was no evidence of aerosol cans, but the male admitted to police he had huffed Air Duster. A records check revealed he had a no-bail warrant out of juvenile detention, and he was arrested. Detention staff knew the male and told police he is a ward of the state with no known parent or guardian to notify of his arrest or location. Parents fight at Wild Waves: At 7:15 p.m. on June 29 at 36201 Enchanted Parkway S., a mother reported she was slapped in the face after her child and the suspect’s child got into a fight at Wild Waves. She told police the suspect insulted her during the assault. She couldn’t tell police who the suspect was and police couldn’t locate the suspect. Citizen stomps out neigh-

bor’s front porch fire: At 5:20 p.m. on June 30 in the 3000 block of South 288th Street, an anonymous reporting party told police he/she saw what looked like a small piece of paper on fire on their neighbor’s front porch. The person said they stomped out the fire because their neighbor was not home, and they had seen children playing with fireworks earlier that day. Police went to the residence but found no suspects or witnesses. Trespassers light campfire: At 4:05 p.m. on July 1 in the 1400 block of Southwest 325th Place, police contacted three juveniles and an adult male who were trespassing 200 feet in the woods behind Alderbrook Park. They were contacted because a fire department had extinguished a campfire by the subjects and one of the juveniles was reported as a runaway. Officers returned the juvenile home but received a call the next day for the same campfire. However, when officers checked the area the suspects had already left. Vacant house trashed with spray paint, swastika: At 4:33 p.m. on July 1 in the 3300 block of Southwest 332nd Street, a witness called police to report five juveniles in a vacant residence in the neighborhood. Officers arrived and discovered spray paint on the garage door and a spray-painted swastika on the front door. The residence was also unlocked and appeared to be in “disarray” inside with spray paint on the walls. Police learned the house has been vacant since December 2014. Upon further investigation, officers found a BB gun in the bushes near the driveway of the home. Officers did not know the contact for the property owner at that time. Man threatens to blow up Taco Bell: At 11:10 p.m. on July 1 at 2031 SW Campus Drive, a Taco

Bell employee reported a male had called and threatened to blow up the restaurant with a bomb. The caller initially asked when the restaurant closed, and when the employee told him 10 p.m., the male said, “I guess I will come in and bomb the place” and hung up. The employee could not identify the caller and believes it was a prank phone call. Police checked the location and found nothing. Man high on meth twitching: At 2:44 a.m. on July 2 in the 3100 block of 28th Avenue South, police involuntarily committed a male who was twitching severely and not responding to a flashlight being shined in his face. The male told officers he used methamphetamine two hours prior to their arrival and that he didn’t know where he was or how he got there. He also told them he uses heroin. Police determined he was unable to care for himself. Screaming woman strips: At 6:08 p.m. on July 2 in the 2600

block of South 288th Street, a woman was involuntarily committed for screaming, yelling and talking to herself. An anonymous witness saw her pounding on a stranger’s front door and removing her clothing. Police said she was unaware of her surroundings and displayed signs of being intoxicated on an unknown drug. Shoes, watches, headphones, clothing stolen from locker: At 5:26 p.m. on July 3 at 32615 Pacific Highway S., a man reported his storage locker at Public Storage was broken into and his belongings were stolen. Police saw the top of the locker’s wire mesh had been removed. The victim said 60 pairs of Nike shoes valued at $12,000, two watches valued at $600, Beats headphones valued at $400 and clothing worth $400 was stolen. The Public Storage manager said that security video for the area either wasn’t working or did not cover that area. No other lockers were burglarized.

Sound Generations, a comprehensive non-profit agency serving older adults and their loved ones in Washington state, is seeking volunteer drivers to take seniors to appointments. “Getting to the doctor’s office can seem daunting for many local seniors,” said Kailan Tyler-Babkirk, South King County Volunteer Transportation program coordinator for Sound Generations. “Poor vision or medical conditions prevent them from driving; limited mobility makes it impossible to take the bus; taxis come with prohibitive costs; and loved ones have full-time jobs that render them unavailable to help.” More volunteer drivers are needed in Federal Way (and throughout King County). The volunteer transportation program is unable to keep up with the growing need for its services, Tyler-Babkirk said, because there are simply not enough volunteers. The benefits, however, aren’t just one-way. The value of Volunteer Transportation extends far beyond the rides themselves,” Tyler-Babkirk said. “A volunteer driver serves as a friendly escort — a companion — someone to talk to along the way. Volunteers turn previously stressful ordeals into pleasant, meaningful experiences.” Volunteers should have a reliable vehicle, a clean driving record and some weekday availability. For information, call 206-748-7588, email Tyler-Babkirk at kailant@soundgenerations.org, or visit www.seniorservices.org/transportation.

[ LL from page 6] Steel Lake now drops down to the bottom bracket and will play at 6 p.m. today, July 8, hoping for another crack at National. The junior all-star softball District 10 champions, Steel Lake/Auburn/Soundview (“Riptide”), saw its run for a state title end at the hands of Columbia Little League from District 4. The Riptide started its run with a hard-fought offensive battle against Bainbridge, losing 13-11, meaning the girls would have to come up through the bottom part of the bracket. With that in mind, the squad fired back with more explosive offense, beating a combined team of Magnolia,

North Central and Ballard little leagues 10-0, which included a perfect game tossed by Kiki Adams. All good things come to an end, however, and for the Riptide it was at the hands of Columbia, 4-3, a team that has now won three in a row in the bottom bracket after losing its opening game to Bellevue. Coincidentally, Bainbridge and Columbia — the Riptide’s two losses — will met July 6 for a chance at a trip to the championship game. The Riptide were managed by Paul Thackeray and assisted by Shawn Frederick and Tabitha Browne. The team’s players were Kiana “Kiki” Adams, Lauren Angelot, Callie Arnott, Hailey Browne, Sydnie

Hoag, Azaria Johnson, Kailey Kwong, Alyssa Lantagne, Alyssa Murray, Tabetha Norris, Charity Sevaaetasi and Katie Severson. Juniors baseball ended with Steel Lake/Kent taking out National/Soundview, 11-5, for the district title. The team went down 3-2 after three frames but took the lead in the fourth and never looked back. Next up will be a trip to Vancouver, Washington, for a 9 a.m. game against North Kitsap American/North Kitsap National Little Leagues on July 16. North Kitsap didn’t exactly dominate in its two-game run to a district championship, winning 7-6 and 7-3 against a South Kitsap team.
