POULSBO — The next time you see a Poulsbo police motorcycle officer helping a motorist, you might have the Masons to thank for it. Check the bike’s rear fender to see if it says “Proudly Funded by the Poulsbo Masons.” At a special ceremony on April 7, the Warren G. Harding Masonic Lodge No. 260 officially presented that motorcycle to the Poulsbo Police Department. “We wanted to make a donation to the Poulsbo Police Department,” Lodge Master Jason Mauk said.

“We originally thought about giving to the K-9 program, but they said they

had lots of money for that. “What they really needed was another car or motor-

cycle. So we started checking around, and we found out that the Federal Way

it last October. It took this long to get it because there was a lot of paperwork and such; it had to go through both city councils,” Mauk said. While the deal was being approved, the lodge raised the $8,500 needed to purchase the motorcycle and accessorize it with new radio, lights and signage. The motorcycle, a 2009 Honda Sport Touring (ST) 1300, is the department’s second cycle. Currently, only Deputy Chief Andy Pate and Officer David Gesell are motorcycle-qualified. Officer Justin Gillen, who accepted the cycle on behalf of the department, will be the next officer to go through police motorcycle training — and he couldn’t stop smiling. “It’s a great bike, nice and smooth,” he told fellow officers who attended the event. “It’s a dream to ride.”
