ederal Way police are investigating last week’s homicide as a potential retaliation case. Murder victim Jeffrey G. McLaren Jr., 19, was found dead with multiple gunshot wounds in between two vehicles in the parking lot of The Cove Apartment
Homes on April 3. According to Federal Way Police Commander Stan McCall, detectives haven’t identified any persons of interest, but because McLaren was a person of interest in a previous murder, they haven’t ruled out that connection. “My understanding is there was an attempt on [McLaren’s] life in
Tacoma, he engaged in fire, he survived and one of the parties didn’t,” McCall said. “Eventually they cleared him as a selfdefense case, but the other parties involved would be persons of interest.” Heather Songer, a spokeswoman for the Pierce County Prosecutor’s Office, confirmed McLaren was a person
of interest in the January murder of Dylan Lee Oman, but McLaren was never charged. “Charges were not filed in this case because we were unable to disprove self-defense,” Songer said. According to a January 13 Kiro 7 news report, Dylan Lee Oman, 18, was killed on Jan. 11 by a “gunman who was target-
ing other people.” Oman and his friends were at an apartment complex near Browns Point to help a friend who was in trouble. But it turned violent when they approached a car, and the driver, allegedly McLaren, fired several shots at the group, shooting Oman twice. Oman was taken to a

hospital, where he later died. McLaren graduated from Todd Beamer High School in 2014. The police department urges those with information on McLaren’s murder to contact the Federal Way Police Department by visiting their tip website, www.safecityfw.com, or by calling 253-835-2121.

Allen’s letter reads. “He said it was hard work going overseas. Neu set goals that were unattainable, had a shoot first approach to his job and didn’t listen to others, particularly if they disagreed with him.” Federal Way Public Schools hired Neu in 2010, and he left the district for the Oklahoma City Public Schools position in 2014. That move came shortly after former school board president Tony Moore was convicted on seven counts of felony theft and the district settled with a former Federal Way High School principal for $219,000 after she was put on leave for questioning Neu’s expensive spending habits on international excursions and inexperienced consultants. When it was announced Neu was leaving the Federal Way school district, several community members and parents told the Mirror that they held Neu responsible for the district’s problems, specifically with an unpopular Standards Based Grading System. Prior to working in Federal Way Public Schools, Neu worked for the Waterford School District in Michigan.
Cops top fire in hoops challenge
The Federal Way police team overcame a late run by a shorthanded South King Fire and Rescue team to win, 50 - 46, at the Federal Way Lions Club’s Eighth Annual Helen Keller Basketball challenge. “It was pretty tense at the end of the 3rd quarter,” said Federal Way Police Department Chief Andy Hwang. “We were holding on 32-31. I told the team to turn up the heat and hit more threes.” The Lions Club raises funds throughout the year to support local charities, seniors and schools. Courtesy of Bruce Honda
