including state Sens. Andy Hill of Redmond, Steve Litzow of Mercer Island and Bruce Dammeier of Puyallup. State Democratic Party leaders literally jumped for joy at the announcement. “Dave Reichert understood he was going to face an uphill climb having to defend his record to Washington voters,” said Jaxon Ravens, state party chairman in a statement. “Now the Republicans are left with little-known Bill Bryant, after every other Republican approached to run turned down the offer.” Susan Hutchison, chairwoman of the state GOP, lauded both men in her statement. She said the state will be “well served” by Reichert’s continued presence in Congress. And, of Bryant, she said he’s running a strong campaign “to replace the Governor who can’t govern, Jay Inslee.” Representatives of Inslee’s campaign declined comment Friday. Republican leaders must still

decide how much the state party will invest in a Bryant bid. Anything perceived as less than all-in will be seized on by Democrat operatives as a concession they don’t believe Bryant can beat Inslee. In 2012, the party provided $2 million directly to Rob McKenna’s campaign plus another $500,000 of in-kind contributions,

according to campaign finance reports filed with the Public Disclosure Commission. Nearly all of that arrived in the general election, so there’s plenty of time to watch how Bryant’s campaign evolves and political events unfold. Strategists with the Republican Governors Association are mulling the same kind of questions.

In 2012, the RGA shelled out roughly $9 million in ads and mailers against Inslee. RGA officials have yet to signal a willingness to expend that much again. They, too, want to see if Bryant’s campaign can raise money and build an organization capable of taking on — and taking down — an incumbent Democratic governor in a state that hasn’t elected a Republican governor in 35 years. Bryant had reported raising $621,000 as of Tuesday. His total could grow quickly as potential donors had been waiting for Reichert to decide. Inslee, meanwhile, is picking up the pace in his campaign and had raised $2.6 million through the end of September. Earlier this month he held fundraisers on the East Coast. And earlier this week he met with billionaire environmentalist Tom Steyer at a Democratic Governor’s Association gathering in Walla Walla. Jerry Cornfield: 360-352-8623; jcornfield@heraldnet.com.

detectives when they listened to recordings of phone calls the defendant placed from jail shortly after his arrest. At least one of those calls was with Painter’s former attorney, David Gehrke, of Des Moines. Listening to that call was a violation of attorneyclient privilege, Browne said. He contends the breach of his client’s constitutional rights were so damaging that dismissing the charges is required. “The case is very messy,” he said. Prosecutors see it differently. They filed affidavits describing how detectives alerted prosecutors about the jail recordings including Painter’s conversation with Gehrke and the steps that were taken to not only contain that information but also alert the defense. At the time, the deputy prosecutor handling the case was Janice Albert. Lisa Paul is now assigned to the case. On Friday, Paul said the questions now being raised by Browne were settled when Gehrke was representing Painter. The parties even appeared before a different Snohomish County judge in April 2014 to make a record. In support of her position, Paul included an email that Gehrke wrote to Albert at the time. In

An Everett man was listed in satisfactory condition at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle after his motorcycle collided with a car north of Oak Harbor on Thursday. Ronald Hockett, 63, was riding a motorcycle northbound on Highway 20 when an Anacortes man attempted to turn southbound off Lunz Road. The collision was reported around 12:15 p.m. The other driver, 86, was not injured, according to a Washington State Patrol memo. The accident is under investigation.

The Washington State Patrol has identified the 97-year-old woman killed Wednesday in a two-vehicle crash north of Oak Harbor. Edna Blackwood, of Oak Harbor, died when her Honda Accord collided with a pickup truck on Highway 20 at Frostad Road about 5 miles north of town. The 72-year-old driver of the pickup was taken to the hospital with injuries that were not believed to be life-threatening. The accident is being investigated by the State Patrol.

The Snohomish County Medical Examiner has released the name of the Snohomish man who died while hiking on Mount Pilchuck east of Verlot earlier this week. Zachary Thorngren, 22, was reported missing from his hiking group Tuesday. Officials believe he fell about 400 feet from the area of the lookout. He died from head injuries, the medical examiner reported. His body was recovered late Wednesday morning by a Snohomish County search and rescue team. Herald staff

it, the defense lawyer described reviewing the problematic recording and concluding it was a “‘no harm, no foul’ situation” for Painter. “Stuff happens,” Gehrke wrote. “I was impressed that the detectives promptly notified you that they thought they were listening to a privileged call, and equally impressed with the efforts you took to protect and isolate the recording, as well as letting me know.” Browne said that settled nothing. If the court finds an attorney-client violation occurred, case law requires prosecutors to prove beyond a reasonable doubt — the same standard necessary to convict someone of a crime

— that the defendant’s fair trial rights were not compromised. Browne said Painter hired his firm because he was dissatisfied with Gehrke’s reaction to the eavesdropping. He also said the record needs clarification on whether the April 2014 court appearance happened before or after Gehrke left the case. Paul subpoenaed Gehrke and Albert to Friday’s hearing so they could testify, if necessary. That plan was abandoned however, after Browne said having Gehrke testify would further undermine the attorney-client relationship between Painter and his former lawyer. Having Albert testify, meanwhile, could make her a witness in the case and create a

before ruling that man’s trial rights were not compromised. The motion in Painter’s case is being heard by Superior Court Judge Millie Judge. She set another hearing for early next month. Careful review of the facts and relevant law is necessary, she said. “It is a serious case with serious charges and we want to get it right,” she said. Scott North: 425339-3431; north@ heraldnet.com. legal situation requiring the prosecutor’s office to withdraw from it, he said. Browne also suggested there may be questions about how much contact Paul has had with the problematic recordings and any memos detectives wrote about the incident. The deputy prosecutor earlier this month was the focus of a multi-day inquiry into whether she had violated the fair trial rights of a man charged with child sex crimes. In that case, Paul had reviewed emails the man had traded years earlier with a divorce attorney believing she had permission, something the defense denied. Superior Court Judge Michael Downes reviewed all questioned emails himself
