Earlier Friday the Matildas defeated Nigeria 2-0. Ellis tinkered with her lineup for the match against Sweden, starting 22-year old Morgan Brian while Wambach was on the bench. Wambach did give the U.S. a spark after entering in the 68th minute, but couldn’t get past Lindahl, who was named player of the match. Klingenberg, who is just 5-foot-2, saved Seger’s shot while Solo was on the other side of the goal. “That was something we practiced this week,” Klingenberg said. “I know that when Hope slides across, I need to tuck in and make sure I’m in position. Luckily I did and I was able to make the play when I needed to.” Klingenberg, who played for a Swedish club team and is friends with many of the players she faced in the game, exchanged jerseys with Seger following the match. “She said, ‘Are you serious?”’ Klingenberg laughed. Lindahl watched the key play unfold from the other end. “I did think: goal-line technology, c’mon!” she said. “But it wasn’t close, actually.” Lindahl came up with her first big save of the match when she leaped to pop Carli Lloyd’s shot up and over the bar early in the second half. Solo leaped to stop Therese Sjogran’s hard shot from far out in the 54th minute but it sailed over her fingertips and over the bar. Solo started in goal for the United States as off-field incidents continue to haunt her. The United States opened play the day after an ESPN report revealed new details about her arrest last June in Washington state on domestic violence charges. The charges were dismissed earlier this year. Sundhage was head coach of the United States for five years, guiding the team to two

Olympic gold medals and the World Cup final in Germany. It was the first time the Americans had advanced to the final since winning it all in 1999. Sundhage left after the 2012 London Olympics and returned home to coach her native Sweden’s national team. Adding to the buildup for the match, one of the most anticipated of the group stage, was a story about Sundhage earlier in the week in The New York Times. In it, Sundhage was quoted as saying that Lloyd was a challenge to coach and she suggested she wouldn’t start Wambach at this point in the popular veteran’s career. She said Solo was one of the most challenging players she had coached,

“especially when it comes to trouble.” She talked about those statements before the match, saying the interview occurred back in April and she certainly was not trying to taunt the U.S. team. The World Cup is being played as FIFA deals with an ongoing corruption scandal sparked by the U.S. Department of Justice indictment of 14 people with racketeering, wire fraud, money laundering and other offenses. Swiss prosecutors are leading a separate probe into the 2018 and 2022 World Cup bidding contests. FIFA President Sepp Blatter, who is not at the tournament, announced last week that he plans to step down once an election is held for a successor.

Associated Press HARRISON, N.Y. — Sei Young Kim of South Korea eagled the 15th hole for a 5-under 68 Friday to take a one-shot lead after the second round of the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship, the second major of the season. Kim overtook

Sounders “Marco has done well for us lately, getting some goals, getting some assists,” Schmid said. “And certainly we need other people to step up into that. But I feel confident that will happen.” The Sounders also are expected to be without midfielder Osvaldo Alonso and forward Chad Barrett due to hamstring injuries. Forward Obafemi Martins is likely to play, although his minutes could be limited, after undergoing nose surgery last week. Evans’ role also is questionable after playing 45 minutes in the U.S. national team’s 2-1 win over

VANCOUVER, British Columbia — Fabienne Humm and Ramona Bachmann both had second-half hat tricks as Switzerland earned its first women’s World Cup victory. Humm’s three goals came within 6 minutes early in the second half, the first coming on a powerful strike from outside the penalty box in the 47th minute to put Switzerland up 3-0.

Australia 2, Nigeria 0 WINNIPEG, Manitoba — Kyah Simon scored twice to lead Australia over Nigeria. Simon beat Nigeria goalkeeper Precious Dede on a feed from Lisa De Vanna to put the Matildas up 1-0 in the 29th minute. She then put away Samantha Kerr’s arcing cross in the 68th minute.

Hall-of-Famer Karrie Webb, who birdied the 18th for a 71. Two-time defending champion Inbee Park (68) joined Webb a stroke back. The 22-year-old Kim, a two-time winner this season on the LPGA Tour, shot bogey-free golf to finish at 8-under 138 at the Westchester Country Club. Suzann Pettersen rallied

with seven birdies for the best round of the day at 66 and tied Canadian teenager Brooke Henderson (73) at 6 under. Jenny Shin (75) and third-ranked Stacy Lewis (71) were three shots behind the leader. Top-ranked Lydia Ko (76) missed the cut, which was 2 over, ending her streak of 53 consecutive made cuts.

Germany on Wednesday, flying back to the Northwest on Thursday and returning to training on Friday. Evans said he feels good, and credited the increased comforts of traveling home from national team duty. “With the U.S. team now when you’re traveling internationally it’s business- or first-(class) so you can lie flat and get some sleep,” he said. “That changes things dramatically in terms of your availability for the next game. If I sat in coach like that, no way. But being able to lie down and get some sleep on the plane is probably invaluable going forward.” Dallas also will be a mixture of roster additions and subtractions. Five players are listed as away at

international duty: Tesho Akindele (Canada), JeVaughn Watson (Jamaica), Atiba Harris (St. Kitts and Nevis), Moises Hernandez (Guatemala) and Kellyn Acosta (U.S. U-20s). However, Schmid implied it might not be quite that straightforward. “It’s a little more difficult because you don’t know who’s exactly in or out for their team,” he said. “... I know Akindele will be missing. Watson will be missing. ... It’s a little uncertain if Hernandez is actually with the Guatemala team or not. And Atiba Harris: Is he going to St. Kitts or is he not going? There are a couple of openended questions there. But we know some of their key guys, and we’ll prepare for that.”

VANCOUVER, British Columbia — Aya Sameshima scored in the 6th minute as defending champion Japan became the first team at the women’s World Cup to secure a berth in the knockout stage with a 2-1 victory over Cameroon on Friday night. Yuika Sugasawa added a header off a cross by Aya Miyama in the 17th minute for Japan (2-0), which held on for the win despite a strong performance by Cameroon — which scored in the 90th minute after a strong run and shot by Ajara Nchout. Cameroon nearly tied the game in stoppage time on a header by Gaelle Enganamouit, but her shot missed just to the left.
