Arlington escapes with win over Panthers By Aaron Lommers Herald Writer

SNOHOMISH — The final 25 seconds of Friday night’s non-conference basketball game between Arlington and Snohomish happened so fast Arlington head coach Nick Brown wasn’t quite sure what happened. The good news for Brown, his team won. With his team trailing 52-51, Arlington junior guard Donovan Sellgren drove the baseline and converted a contested lay up to give the Eagles a 53-52 lead with 21 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter. Moments later, Sellgren came up with a steal and dished the ball to fellow junior guard Tylor Morton

for another lay up to push the lead to 55-52 with 14 seconds left on the clock. Snohomish’s senior point guard Zak Carlson pushed the ball up the court to try and get off a game-tying 3-pointer, but his shot came off the rim as time expired and the Eagles escaped with a 55-52 win. “That last 15 seconds, I don’t really know what happened,” Brown said. “It was one of those things where we scored and then we got it back and all the sudden we scored again. It was just like, ‘Holy moley.’ My first thought was get back, get back, get back and don’t foul, but all of the sudden the ball is in our hands and the next thing you know we’re going back at it.” Sellgren scored 12 points to

Eagles’ defense keys victory Herald staff ARLINGTON — Gracie Castaneda led a balanced offensive effort with 17 points and the Arlington defense shut down Snohomish in a 65-42 non-conference victory Friday night between the former 4A rivals. The Eagles jumped out to a 21-6 lead in the first quarter as seven different players scored points, and that unselfishness carried on throughout the game. “We just shared the ball. One person isn’t going to carry us,” Arlington coach Joe Marsh said. “But it all started with our defense. That’s what we do and what we pride ourselves on. We got some turnovers and our full-court pressure was great tonight.” Arlington (3-0) held the Snohomish (0-2) trio of Madison Pollock, Darian Rielly and Madeline Smith to just 28 combined points, and only Pollock reached double figures with 13.

“We knew coming in the talent we would have to deal with, and we just did a great job on defense,” Marsh said. “It was a great effort on defense, and we were helping each other all night long.” Castaneda scored 15 of her 17 points in the second half, and was able to pierce the Panther defense with dribble penetration. “She just attacked the rim over and over and Snohomish didn’t have anyone who could stop her,” Marsh said. Glacier Peak 66, Monroe 51 SNOHOMISH — Paisley Johnson and Kayla Watkins scored 19 points apiece and formed a solid inside-outside scoring tandem for the Grizzlies in a non-conference victory over the Bearcats on Friday night. “Paisley did a great job of attacking the basket and finishing strong,” Glacier Peak coach Brian Hill said. “And Kayla was a load inside. When she gets the ball in there, she has great body control and can finish around the rim. The two of them made a good combination for a lot of the game.”

lead the Eagles, but it was the final two plays he made that were the most memorable. “Donovan, I thought, just played so well,” Brown said. “He just made so many things happen.” The victory didn’t come easily for the Eagles. Snohomish was the dominant team early in the game. The Panthers used an 11-0 run to take a 16-6 lead at the end of the first quarter. Against Snohomish’s zone, Arlington looked out of sorts offensively. “We struggled against that zone a little bit at first, which is frustrating because we talked about that last night quite a bit,” Brown said. “They’re so long and they don’t play you man-to-man as much as they play passing

Associated Press TACOMA — Junior Brandon Wellington rushed for three touchdowns and junior quarterback Harley Kirsch added two touchdown passes as Eastside Catholic beat Bellevue 35-13 to snap the Wolverines’ 67-game winning streak and win the Class 3A high school football championship Friday night at the Tacoma Dome. With its first state title, Eastside Catholic, which led 14-13 at halftime, also ended Bellevue’s six-year championship streak. The Wolverines beat Eastside Catholic (13-1) in the previous two championship games. Bellevue (13-1) suffered its first loss since a 28-21 defeat against Skyline in 2010. The Wolverines had won 26 straight playoff games and 11 of the past 13 state titles. Kirsch completed 20 of 22 passes for 188 yards to lead the Sammamish school. He rushed for 94 yards on 20 carries. Wellington had 33 rushes for 110 yards. Eastside Catholic out-gained Bellevue 414-158 yards and had 24 first downs to four for the Wolverines. The Crusaders held Bellevue to 10 yards and no first downs in the second half.

Okanogan 17, Napavine 14 TACOMA — Okanogan scored 17 points in the first half and held off Napavine for two win the Class 2B state championship at the Tacoma Dome. Napavine quarterback Wyatt Stanley threw a 27-yard touchdown pass to Mac Fagerness to cut the score to 17-14 with 3:06 left in the game but the Tigers didn’t come close to scoring again. Stanley completed 15 of 29 passes for 184 yards and one touchdown. Napavine (12-1) lost three fumbles and threw two interceptions. The Tigers also missed field-goal attempts of 31, 22 and 26 yards. Okanogan quarterback Benny Cate was 2-for-4 passing for 143 yards and a touchdown to help give the Bulldogs (14-1) their 17-0 halftime lead. Cate hit Jimmy Townsend for a 61-yard score, with Townsend hauling in a tipped ball after a near interception. Jalen Moses caught the second completion by Cate but fumbled the ball near the end zone. Teammate Payton Staggs recovered it for a touchdown, completing an 82-yard play.

have a chance,” Brown said. “We’re young and untested and I really didn’t know what we were going to do. They’ve done it in the summer, but they’ve never really done it under the big lights. “I felt like I was watching a team literally growing before my eyes.” Snohomish dropped to 0-2 to start the season, but looked considerably better than it did in Tuesday’s 58-44 loss to crosstown-rival Glacier Peak. “We’re making progress,” Snohomish head coach Len Bone said. “I think our awareness of what we were guarding and how we were being guarded, both of those things were better, but they still weren’t real good.”

lanes and so they tip everything. It was a different look for us. We talked yesterday that we couldn’t pass and screen away because that’s what they want you to do, so we finally figured out to pass and start cutting and that’s when thing really started clicking for us.” By the end of the second quarter, Arlington had cut the deficit to two, trailing 28-26. It appeared the Eagles had momentum at the break, but it was the Panthers who struck first in the second half. Snohomish opened the half on a 12-4 run to extend the lead back to 10 to start the third quarter. Snohomish led 46-37 at the end of the stanza. “We said at the (end of the third) quarter that if we could get it down to four, than we
