NEW YORK — Peter Pan was born as the highflying hero of a play by Scottish writer James M. Barrie. Many adaptations later, 1954’s Broadway musical version of “Peter Pan” came to TV in a live NBC telecast in 1955, then was re-staged a year later with Mary Martin yet again in the title role. Now NBC is recapturing its youth for a revival of “Peter Pan,” broadcast live at 5 p.m. Thursday, starring Allison Williamsas Peter, the cocky young champion of Neverland, and Christopher Walken as the deliciously evil pirate, Captain Hook. Minnie Driver narrates. Officially titled “Peter Pan Live!” this three-hour event is a follow-up to last

“The Hundred-Foot Journey” ★★★: An Indian family launches a restaurant across the street from a popular French restaurant. Helen Mirren stars. Director Lasse Hallstrom blends romance and cooking to create a sweet tale of love that’s fifty shades of gravy. Most of the film is predictable, but that’s like looking at a menu and ordering items you’ve had many times before. “Cantinflas” ★★★½: The Spanish-language movie (it comes with English subtitles) provides a context of why Mario Moreno belongs among the names of the great film comedians. Director Sebastian del Amo skillfully shows the professional highs and emotional lows that went into making Cantinflas such a national treasure. The film’s biggest flaw is that the “80 Days” story

isn’t quite as interesting. It would have been better to explore the rise of Cantinflas in more detail. “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes” ★★★½: The updated tale of how apes surpass man as the dominant species — has plenty of big battle sequences. But it also gives equal time to personal issues like respect, loyalty and family.

Also new on DVD this week: “The Hero of Color City”: Crayon box transforms into a colorful world. “Fifi Howls From Happiness”: Look at Iranian artist, Bahman Mohasses. “Jingle All the Way 2”: Two dads compete to make this the best Christmas ever. Rick Bentley, The Fresno Bee

MUSIC

’70s rock never fades away HBO has given the goahead to a series about the music scene in 1970s New York, written by “Boardwalk Empire” creator Terence Winter and including Martin Scorsese and Mick Jagger as executive producers. Jagger’s son, James, is featured as the lead singer of the fictional punk rock band Nasty Bits. Mick Jagger famously sang about late 1970s New York in the Rolling Stones song

year’s live “The Sound of Music,” which drew an astonishing 18.6 million viewers. “It’s much bigger and much more challenging than ‘The Sound of Music’ last year,” said executive producer Craig Zadan. “A lot more musical numbers, a lot more dancing, plus the sword fights and flying. And a live dog.” With no doovers allowed. But maybe the biggest difference between this year and last: Everyone knew and cherished the 1965 Julie Andrews-starring film of “The Sound of Music,” which made tampering with it a dicey proposition. TODAY IN HISTORY Today is Thursday, Dec. 4, the 338th day of 2014. There are 27 days left in the year. Today’s highlight: On Dec. 4, 1984, a fiveday hijack drama began as four armed men seized a Kuwaiti airliner en route to Pakistan and forced it to land in Tehran, where the hijackers killed American passenger Charles Hegna. (A second American, William Stanford, also was killed during the siege before Iranian security seized control of the plane.) On this date: In 1214, Alexander II became King of Scots at age 16 upon the death of his father, William the Lion. In 1619, a group of settlers from Bristol, England, arrived at Berkeley Hundred in present-day Charles City County, Virginia, where they held a service thanking God for their safe arrival. In 1783, Gen. George Washington bade farewell to his Continental Army officers at Fraunces Tavern in New York. In 1816, James Monroe of Virginia was elected the fifth president of the United States. In 1918, President Woodrow Wilson left Washington on a trip to France to attend the Versailles Peace Conference. In 1945, the Senate approved U.S. participation in the United Nations by a vote of 65-7. In 1965, the United States launched Gemini 7 with Air Force Lt. Col. Frank Borman and Navy Cmdr. James A. Lovell aboard. In 1978, San Francisco got its first female mayor as City Supervisor Dianne Feinstein was named to replace the assassinated George Moscone. In 1980, the bodies of four American churchwomen slain in El Salvador two days earlier were unearthed. (Five Salvadoran national guardsmen were later convicted of murdering nuns Ita Ford, Maura Clarke and Dorothy Kazel, and lay worker Jean Donovan.) In 1991, Associated Press correspondent Terry Anderson, the longest held of the Western hostages in Lebanon, was released after nearly seven years in captivity. Associated Press

50 years ago (1964) Robert Schillberg took his oath of office from County Auditor Stanley Dubuque yesterday, moments after County Commissioners announced his appointment as Snohomish County Prosecuting Attorney. Schillberg, chief civil deputy prosecutor for the past two years, replaced Lloyd Meeds, who was assuming his new post as U.S. Congressman. A package of fun was

in store for Cascade High students and their invited guests at the Santa’s City Christmas Ball tomorrow night. Corsages were not in order, but he ball was a semi-formal affair. Suzie Horn was chairing the decorating committee with help from Alan Johnson, Donna Rome and Barbara Weber. 25 years ago (1989) Robin Winters checked the merchandise at an Everett Mall kiosk that sold his Sneaker Pack creations. In just three months since

the Sultan man started marketing the colorful novelties at 11 malls in five Western states, he had sold some 8,000 Sneaker Packs. Joel Faber apparently really enjoyed falling from a rope into the pool at Forest Park recently. Joel and his eighth grade classmates were treated to a session at the pool for taking care of responsibilities at Everett Christian School.
