HAPPENING CONTINUED FROM A13
“I am continually surprised somehow that at every stage of our lives we are challenged to crash [and] burn and start over in a new, uncertain phase,” Smith said. “I keep thinking I should be finished! Aging, loss [and] grief are great and formidable teachers. In ‘Henry IV,’ both the public and private worlds are going through ground shaking transition. The Kingdom, coming off of revolt and civil war, is in a very precarious state; just as the characters are facing individual instability, and having to reinvent themselves.” Tickets are available at “pay what you can” price variances at www.brownpapertickets. com/event/725720. Machine next week to see the Grateful Dead play a concert at the Beat Club in Bremen, Germany in 1972. A film of the concert will get theatrical screenings across the country — including at Bainbridge Cinemas — at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, July 17 as part of the annual “Grateful Dead Meet-Up at the Movies.” The screenings will feature a complete live studio performance with remastered audio. In addition to performances of a shorter version of the
band’s European tour song selection, the film will include all the in-studio banter that took place the day it was filmed. The group was touring in support of its 1971 album, “Grateful Dead,” and recordings from the tour would later appear on the band’s live, triple LP “Europe ‘72.” At the Beat Club, the band played favorites like “Bertha,” “Sugaree” and two versions of “Playing in the Band,” as well as a medley called, “Truckin’Drums-The Other One.” It’s one of the last filmed
concerts to feature Ron “Pigpen” McKernen, who co-founded the group and played organ and harmonica, as well as contributing backup vocals, on the tour. “There’s never been a show from this era filmed so clearly in its entirety, and this audiovisual document captures the band at arguably their creative zenith,” Grateful Dead archivist David Lemieux said in a statement. Tickets for the screening are $12.50 and are available at the box office.
Crichton Family Band, The 1 Uppers and more. Numerous food and craft vendors will also be on site throughout the day. Visit www.brownpaper tickets.com/event/520003 to purchase tickets and www.bainbridgeblue grassfestival.com for more information. GRATEFUL DEAD
