News Briefs Meet finalists for WSF’s top job at open house
Three finalists for Gordon Elementary principal
BREMER TON — The state Department of Transportation has narrowed the pool of candidates for assistant secretary of Transportation, Ferries Division, to two. And you can meet them at an upcoming open house. The Kitsap open house is June 10, 7-8 p.m., at the Norm Dicks Government Center, 345 6th St., Bremerton. The candidates are: n Capt. George Capacci: Currently serving as interim assistant secretary, Capacci held the position of WSF deputy chief of operations and construction. He also served as vice president of fleet operations with the Alaska Marine Highway System and is a retired commissioned officer of the U.S. Coast Guard. n John Ladenburg: He’s a lawyer with an extensive background in local and regional government. He served as Pierce County Executive, Pierce County prosecuting attorney and Tacoma City Council member. He served as chairman of Sound Transit, president of Puget Sound Regional Council of Governments, and president of the Puget Sound Economic Development Board. Washington State Ferries is the largest ferry system in the U.S. and moves 22 million passengers annually. After brief introductions from the meeting hosts, residents will have an opportunity to talk with the candidates. There will be no formal Q&A session.
KINGSTON — The search for a new principal for Richard Gordon Elementary School has been narrowed to three finalists: n Daniel King, English Language Arts specialist, Olympic Educational Service District 114. n Bethany LaHaie, teacher, Gordon Elementary School. n Karen Tollefson, principal of White Pass Elementary School. Staff members, families, and residents met the finalists June 4 at a meetand-greet in the Gordon Elementary Gymnasium. The new principal will succeed Rachel Osborn, who is leaving to complete her doctorate.

He was the deputy commander for the South Pacific Division, with a workforce of more than 2,500 people. He managed military construction, environmental programs and civil works projects throughout the western states with a program in excess of $1 billion. He also served as deputy garrison commander for transformation at the Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland; deputy commander for the New England District; and served in Italy, Kosovo, Korea, Iraq and Germany. He is the recipient of the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star and numerous other decorations. “A lot of people will say their person is great, but in my 33 years in a leadership role, Andy is without a doubt one of the best leaders and people I have ever met,” Brig. Gen. C. David Turner, commander of the South Pacific Division, commented in a press release issued by Kitsap County. Nelson is a native of South Dakota, received his master’s degree in civil engineering from the University of Washington, and is a licensed professional engineer in Washington.

nous nation headquartered in Anacortes. Samish’s historical territory includes the San Juan Islands and parts of Skagit County. Samish government services include cultural resources, education, elders services, health, housing, natural resources, social services, and vocational rehabilitation. Samish owns and operates Fidalgo Bay Resort, Samish Longhouse Head Start & Early Learning Center, developable commercial land in Anacortes, and land for a reservation on Campbell Lake. It also owns and manages Huckleberry Island and community gardens on Thomas Creek. Settle served on the Samish Tribal Council in the early 2000s and was a delegate to the Northwest Portland Area Indian Health Board. The Samish election is June 29. She is running against the incumbent, Tim King, a landscape architect from Seattle. Other positions on the ballot are treasurer and a council seat. The council’s seven members are elected to fouryear terms.

Safeway traffic signal will be turned on June 10 POULSBO — In anticipation of the opening of Poulsbo’s newest grocery store, Safeway, a new traffic signal will be activated to accommodate the flow of traffic. The traffic signal at 10th Avenue and Lincoln Road will begin flashing on June 10, and will be switched to standard operation on June 12. Safeway, on the corner of Highway 305 and Lincoln Road, is scheduled to open its doors on June 27.
