Creating balance in your life means facing concerns

While stopped at a busy school crosswalk this week, I enjoyed watching an array of people hurrying to their various destinations. There were parents walking their youngsters to elementary school, kids peddling bikes and retirees exercising their dogs. Some were dressed as if a storm was approaching; others dressed in brightlycolored layers, perfect for the moist mornings and sunfilled afternoons we’ve been experiencing of late. They were a great looking bunch. It was one particular teenage girl who captured my attention most. Carefully dressed, including expertly applied makeup and hair piled atop her head, she balanced a binder, a sizable pile of books and a brightly decorated cake stored in a clear plastic container. Tied to her wrist rose a bunch of helium-filled balloons that might have carried her away had it not been for the bulky, yet stylish platform shoes on which she balanced herself and her load. Stopping for the briefest moment at the curb, I watched in fascination as she carefully eyed the step before artfully making her way onto the sidewalk — platform, party supplies, school books and all. It’s all about balance, isn’t it? Sometimes I lose my balance and I cannot blame my shoes, only myself. I lose balance when I dare to believe that I can go it on my own, that I have the strength of character and energy, perseverance and good intentions to maneuver down my life path without dumping my load. On the days I venture out without giving God a good morning greeting, or inviting Him into my day, asking Him to draw near to somebody I love or acknowledging that I can feel His presence, I invariably lose my balance or good humor. My timing goes askew. So does my ability to respond graciously and with strength to those things I hadn’t planned on facing that day. Because I despise those days, I am learning to avoid them by giving myself a spiritual check. I privately work down a list of questions that include: Am I eating right, exercising and getting enough sleep? Am I connecting with family members and dear friends? Am I worshipping God? Am I spending time sharing my faith with others? Have I looked at my life goals lately? Am I fulfilling what I understand is my purpose in this life? Am I growing in character? How am I serving others? Am I doing anything purely for fun? In the answers, I find my balance. It also comes when I take the time and gather the courage to share my life experiences with those walking a similar path. Balance comes when you bravely face circumstances that concern you, remembering that a full life is lived one season at a time. Balance comes when you return to the people and activities that fuel your courage and energy. Balance comes when you look for God every step of the way.
