Sports Roundup BHS LAX girls stun Kennedy MEMORIAL STADIUM The Bainbridge Spartans delivered a convincing and serious season-opening statement Wednesday against Kennedy Catholic in girls lacrosse. We’re back. Bainbridge lambasted the Lancers 19-3 at Bainbridge Memorial Stadium as junior attacker Paige Brigham led the way with five goals and two assists for BHS. The game was the second-consecutive season-opener where Brigham scored five or more goals. In 2013, the then-sophomore scored six goals and two assists in the Spartans’ campaign-opening defeat of Overlake. This week’s contest was never in much doubt. Bainbridge rocketed to a 10-2 advantage by the intermission and then tacked on nine more in the second to put the kibosh on Kennedy. Sallie Marx and Sonia Olson had three goals and an assist each for the Spartans, while Kennedy’s Ashley Cusack led all Lancers in scoring with two goals. Bainbridge goaltender Kelly Coffyn had four saves, and Kennedy keeper Brita Whisler recorded eight. Marx also posted three ground balls and eight draw controls. Fellow Spartans Riley McCormick-Dekker and Amy Willerford added two goals each for Bainbridge. BHS’s Robin Hilderman

nailed the net with two goals, and also had three ground balls, five draw controls and one caused turnover. Ellen Carpenter had two goals, one assist and one draw control for Bainbridge, while Kyra Wortley added an assist and four draw controls.

U-13 boys bring home spring title BAINBRIDGE ISLAND The Bainbridge Island Football Club’s Under-13 boys brought home a big win recently and won the Regional Club League’s Division 3 Spring League Premiere-level title. The team boasted a season record of 5-1-1, scoring a total of 16 points and earning no red cards. “The Boys U-13 team, coached by Tim Self, is one of the few RCL Premiere level clubs we field,” said BIFC spokesman Johannes Happonen. “This means automatic promotion [for them] to Division 2 for the fall season.” On a team packed with young up-and-comers, one athlete especially played harder than most and found his way to special recognition.

“Their forward, Evan Starke, was called to represent Washington state at the Olympic Development Program this winter in Arizona,” Happonen said. “[He] is one of the BIFC players to keep an eye on.”

BIFC will host town hall meeting BAINBRIDGE ISLAND The Bainbridge Island Football Club will host a town hall meeting next week to discuss the evolving landscape of soccer competition, select and premiere levels, across Kitsap County. The meeting is 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 19 in the Bainbridge High School library. According to the club, the total population of school-age children in Kitsap County has been declining over the last 10 years and the future forecast predicts continued declining enrollment. But with an increase in clubs comes a rise in competition for a limited player pool, with no guarantee that clubs can field teams in every age group. The BIFC has been discussing ways to cooperate and share resources with other clubs for more than a year, BIFC officials said.

Last fall the West Sound and Crush clubs began the process of merging their organizations, a move which will take effect this season. BIFC was invited to join the growing conversation regarding club mergers in the county. “It’s not a merger. We’re trying to cooperate in a way to support all levels

of play,” said BIFC spokesman Johannes Happonen. “It’s more of an investigation into how we can cooperate rather than fight each other,” he said. Happonen encouraged parents and players to attend the meeting so as to voice their opinions

about the future of club soccer, and added that the situation was “very fluid” right now. “What we do know is that the player population is declining on Kitsap. We really want to hear from the community and see where we’re at.”
