e said the name comes from an African king. But name value is not the only unique quality senior Terro Bell, who is named after his father, provides to South Kitsap’s football team. Bell also has the distinction of becoming an impact newcomer at the school’s most decorated offensive position. For decades, the lead running back role was inherited from one 1,000-yard rusher to the next. For Bell, he not only overcame that obstacle — he did not even play the position last year. While playing for Steve Graff, who has won three state championships, last year at Chiawana High School in Pasco, Bell said the was converted early in the season from running back to wide receiver. It seems like the most improbable of hopes. But South Kitsap, which plays at 7 tonight against Yelm, still is clinging to playoff hopes. For that to occur, the Wolves (1-4 overall, 0-3 4A Narrows League) need to win all four of their remaining league games. They also need one of 4A Narrows’ top three teams — Bellarmine Prep, Gig Harbor or Olympia — to lose the rest of their league contests. “We’re at other peoples disposal now,” South coach Eric Canton said. “We’re looking for some help.” The Wolves could have avoided that scenario with an upset win Saturday at Olympia. But that bid fell short during a 28-21 setback. Olympia (4-1, 2-0), which had not allowed more than a touchdown in any game this season, scored first on a 41-yard pass from Cooper Murphy to Derrick Becker during the first quarter. The Bears extended their lead to 14-0 in the second quarter on a 2-yard run by Cedar Frost. The teams then traded touchdowns to end the first half as South senior running back Terro Bell scored on an 86-yard run before Frost responded with a 2-yard touchdown run that gave Olympia a 28-7 halftime lead. Bell’s younger brother, Corey, then showed his explosiveness to open the second half. The sophomore returned the kickoff 94 yards for a touchdown to cut the Wolves’ deficit to 21-14. Canton tried to capitalize on the momentum with an onside kick. “The onside kick — we’ve got it and they took it away from us and go down and score a touchdown,” he said. “One of their kids took it from us.” And South, which has struggled to stop
the run during its four-game losing streak, could not contain Frost. The 5-foot-11, 200pound senior finished with 154 yards on 31 carries, including a 3-yard touchdown run in the third quarter that gave the Bears a 28-14 lead. “When we need a stop … we can’t get one,” Canton said. Terro Bell scored the game’s final touchdown on a 12-yard run in the fourth quarter, but it was not enough to prevent the Wolves’ sixth setback in their last seven games against Olympia. “I felt like we should’ve won,” Canton said. “I felt like we were the better team. But you have to execute.” The Wolves did not and now have their longest losing streak since they suffered five straight setbacks in 2010. Canton liked that his team, which had lost each of their previous three games by at least 21 points, was not blown out this time. “It’s encouraging, but I’m not one for moral victories,” he said. “It still goes down as a loss.”
