In writing, Emma Greenlee was awarded third place.

The Harbor School The Harbor School recently became one of 538 schools nationwide to achieve Silver Level Status in the 2013 Mathcounts club program. This award represents The Harbor School math

team’s completion of five rigorous math challenges designed to promote critical thinking and creativity. It follows on the heels of The team’s second-place finish in the statewide Division 2 Math is Cool competition this past December. James Cardo, head of school at The Harbor School, said their success is due to the work of the team’s volunteer coach Nathan Enzian and math teacher Leslie Blair, as well as the dedication of the students.

Several high school students were involved in a rollover accident two weeks on a late-start morning beore school. According to a King County Sheriff ’s Office report, the accident occurred around 9:30 a.m. Thursday, June 6, near the 9000 block of S.W. 204th St. A 16-year-old Vashon High School student was driving an SUV and carrying six fellow teens as passengers. The vehicle was traveling eastbound going down a hill at a curve, and the driver apparently crossed into the oncoming lane and overcorrected, according to the report. The vehicle then spun around onto the gravel shoulder before sliding into bushes and rolling over onto its top. Everyone in the car was wearing seat belts, according to the report, and no one reported an injury. When the deputy arrived,

he found that all the passengers had left the accident and gone to school. By law in Washington, for the first six months after getting a driver’s license, teens under 18 must wait six months before carrying passengers under age 20, except for immediate family members. In the next six months, they are to have no more than three passengers under 20 years old who aren’t members of their immediate family. According to Sgt. Cindi West, a spokeswoman for the King County Sheriff’s office, violating that regulation is considered a secondary infraction and can only be ticketed if a driver is cited for a primary infraction. As of Monday, West said, the officer who went to the scene had not yet determined if he would cite the driver for any violations. — Susan Riemer
