SCHOOLS Academy’s enrollment jumps Maybe the students are just late enrollees. South Whidbey Academy’s enrollment has jumped from 66 students in December to 77 since the new year began. In its first year as a kindergarten through 12th grade alternative program, South Whidbey Academy remains an experiment in alternative education. District-wide, enrollment is down. About 40 fewer students are enrolled this year than the previous school year.

The meeting also includes updates to the city’s comprehensive plan, various planning project updates and audience input. The board’s next meeting is set for June 5, so this will be the prime opportunity to voice opinions on any city planning issues. Parking options include keeping First Street as is, with half angled and half parallel spots. SOUTH END Deputies arrest suspected burglar A 25-year-old South Whidbey burglary suspect was taken into custody Monday. Island County Sheriff Mark Brown asked for the community’s help last week in locating Robert Dean Burns, who was wanted on warrants out of Island County, Oak Harbor and Renton. Burns is also a suspect in a felony burglary case in the Scatchet Head neighborhood of South Whidbey, according to Brown. That burglary involved the theft of firearms. Burns was living in the Scatchet Head neighborhood, the sheriff said.
