Qualify for Navy JROTC Service Air Rifle Championship South Kitsap High School NJROTC cadets Janine Cooney and Brooke Warner represented the Navy’s Area 13 (Northwest U.S. Alaska, Hawaii, and Japan) in the 2013 Marine Corps and Navy JROTC Service Air Rifle Championship in Salt Lake City, Utah.

South Kitsap High School students recognized for volunteer services South Kitsap High School students Alexis Miller and Christina Bolz were honored for their exemplary volunteer service with a President’s Volunteer Service Award.

South Kitsap High School student actors take stage in Seattle and Broadway Thirteen members of SKHS’s Acting Ensemble participated in Seattle Repertory Theater’s third annual August Wilson Monologue Competition. Megan Sigurdson and Alexandra Hope were in the top ten finalists. Hope will go to New York City in May to compete at the national level on Broadway. SKSD teachers earn National Board Certification Four SKSD teachers achieved National Board Certification in 2012 for professional teaching standards. This certification is the highest credential in the teaching profession. Congratulations to SKHS teachers Leah Baker, Jennifer Duggan, Michelle Koehn, and Jennilyn Rowe. This brings the district’s total to more than 70 National Board Certified teachers.

South Kitsap High School student’s art is recognized in Olympia SKHS senior Sarah Geiger’s and Matt Esteron’s art pieces were chosen to advance to the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) state-level High School Art Show in Olympia.

Two SKHS Students Graduate from Naval Academy Sarah Brown and Rachel Cabacungan, both 2008 graduates from SKHS, were part of the 1,099 people who graduated from the US Naval Academy at Annapolis, MD, on May 29, 2012. Sarah will go on to train as a Navy Pilot and Rachel will receive training as a Surface Warfare Officer.

High school semester change

South Kitsap School District moves to align 7-12 instructional system A new semester system will start in the fall of the 2013-14 school year. South Kitsap High School students will change from a trimester to a semester system in order to provide continuity for all SK students.

District receives Meritorius Budget Award

Staff has been working hard to develop a transition plan that maximizes instructional time, options for students, and maintains or enhances intervention and enrichment programs.

South Kitsap is the only district in the state to receive the Meritorious Budget Award for 2012-2013 from the Association of School Business Officials International.

Students selected for Washington All State High School Marching Band Ten SKSD students were selected to participate in the Washington All State High School Marching Band and will march at various events June 29 – July 5, 2013 in Washington DC and Philadelphia.

SKSD Special Olympic basketball team goes to state The South Kitsap Special Olympic basketball teams competed in the Southwest Regional Tournament taking fourth place and gold medals. The SK Wolves boys team went on to receive bronze medals at the state competition.

Currently junior high school students are on a semester system and encounter challenges when transferring to the high school’s trimester system. “Moving to semesters will align our students to the state guidelines as well as providing a seamless transition to the high school,” said Jerry Holsten, SKHS principal. Students need to plan carefully All students need to plan carefully to maximize their credit potential. Running Start students are reminded that Olympic College is on a quarter system and dropping college classes in the middle of the year might cause difficulty in picking up a high school class.
