pleased with this year’s turnout. “Anything is better than nothing,” he said. “Bellringer has been around for 60-plus years. We’ve changed a little of the format, but we do the same thing.” Bellringer now turns the funds over to North Kitsap Fishline, ShareNet and St. Vincent de Paul instead of waiting for grant requests. Macdonald said these organizations are better equipped to screen recipients, and he feels comfortable that the money is being spent wisely. Macdonald said Bellringer keeps about $5,000 each year as a reserve fund in case of a “major catastrophe.” “Fishline, ShareNet and St. Vincent [de Paul] all have a budget, but if they have excess funds, they’re going to spend it. We’re going to be kind of a cushion and sit in the back,” he said. Mary Nader, executive director of Fishline, said her organization received $8,000 from last year’s fundraiser. The money helps Fishline clients with medical co-pays, gas vouchers, emergency housing, eviction prevention and utility assistance. Donations are accepted year-round for the fund — P.O. Box 1244, Poulsbo 98370 — which helps provide food, emergency shelter and emergency financial assistance to North Kitsap residents in need. Donations are tax-deductible. The fund was founded in the 1940s by Frank and Mabel Raab as a way for neighbors to help each other during emergencies. The Poulsbo Noon Lions Club administers the fund for the Raab Foundation. The fund usually helps at least 300 families. In addition, the fund supplies Christmas food baskets to 100 local families. Here are this week’s donors.
