THE GREENING OF NURSING HOMES

Presented by

In an effort to become more “resident centered, nursing homes are increasingly becoming decentralized. As a result, resident quarters are being designed to look more like residential housing, with open kitchens and dining rooms with long communal dining tables, comfortable seating areas with upholstered chairs, and private bedrooms and baths surrounding main living areas. Not only do these living spaces feel more like traditional homes, they differ from traditional nursing homes in the way that medical care is delivered. Instead of many caregivers with narrowly defined jobs, there are a limited number of certified nursing assistants who perform a number of tasks for residents. The goal is to create more flexible scheduling that focuses on the individual.
