Brooke Paulson still has the green light, the freedom to launch shots from just about anywhere on the court – all aimed at netting another victory for her team. But while most on the Plateau recall Paulson leading the White River Hornets to a series of state tournament appearances, she’s now wearing the colors of the St. Martin’s University Saints. “It’s been great, Paulson said of her first year of collegiate competition. “I love it. I love my team. Paulson was a four-year member of the White River varsity squad, contributing to a remarkable run of success built by coach Chris Gibson. She was always an outside threat, consistently connecting for doublefigure scoring. That was enough to prompt the Saints – and coach Tim Healy in particular – to come calling. The former Hornet hasn’t disappointed. Through Saturday night, Paulson had played in all 16 of the Saints’ games and was the No. 3 scorer, averaging 6.3 points

per outing. Her offensive highlight came Nov. 17 against Warner Pacific when she posted a team-high 20 points. She also is third in both field goal attempts and field goals made. Always a solid performer from the free-throw line, Paulson has continued to shine from the stripe, connecting on 26 of 31 attempts for an impressive .839 percentage. As the first player off the bench, she is second on the team in assists, averaging 1.7 per outing. While Paulson’t offensive punch is much appreciated and her jump shot is still deadly, Paulson has had to make changes at the defensive end of the court. Healy has different expectations that she experienced in high school and Paulson has had to adjust. That, she said, is the biggest difference she’s found from the prep scene. While she’s enjoying her life as a sparkplug off the Saints’ bench, Paulson has her eye on even more playing time. If things go as planned, she said, subsequent seasons will see her taking the floor as a member of the starting five.

Sumner High Wrestling By Daniel Nash Staff Writer

Sumner High School’s wrestling team hosted its first dual meet of 2012 Thursday night and marked the occasion by taking Fife’s back to the mat 39-34. Mike Forhan at 126 pounds wrestled an aggressive match from the get-go, eventually pinning Fife’s grappler at the 3-miunte12-second mark. Jeremy Jackson, 138, put on a show of a match, toying with Jesse Erickson through three rounds to a 7-3 win. AJ Atoigue, 160, was stuck in the standing position against Carl Finlayson in the first round, consistently taking control of the Trojans’ head yet failing to bring the game to the ground. That changed in round two when Atoigue was able to fight for and keep top dominance. He took out Finlayson in the third round at the 4:44 mark. Tanner Sjoden, 170, made mincemeat of Keanu Songcuan, reversing Songcuan’s top control and swiftly forcing him to his back for a pin in 80 seconds. Nick Hultberg, 182, won 11-8, Nick Ehrenheim won by pin at 195 and Justin Myers won 8-4 at 220 pounds. Jacob Unger, 106, won by forfeit.

Hofto grasped his arm in pain and the match briefly halted. The spunky Spart

recovered enough to continue the match, but lost 12-3. Travis Filleau, 113, lost by a second-round pin. The Spartans next compete at 7 p.m. Thursday at Eatonville High.
