Lieutenant Governor DIVISION 21 | PNW

Hello Division 21 Bumblebees! How was Trick Or Treat For UNICEF? Good? Bad? Well let me tell you how it went for our division… FANTASTIC! Our division’s goal for Trick Or Treat For UNICEF this year was $300, however, between the six schools in the division that participated in the project this year, the grand total came out to be… $2,067.20!!!!! You guys are AMAZING! I would have never thought that we would exceed our goal by so much! We saved 1,148 babies with that money! If you didn’t think that was impressive, then let me tell you another fact! Our division’s goal for the number of service hours we wanted to achieve by DCON 2015 was 2,000 hours collectively as a division. We are only 2 months into the school year and we have already passed our goal with a grand total of 2,646 hours and 56 minutes!!!!! WHAT! You guys need to stop being so INCREDIBLE.. Just kidding! Keep up the amazing work! KUDOS TO ALL OF YOU for your participation and dedication to your clubs and the division within the past 2 months! You all make me so PROUD and THANKFUL to be serving such a dedicated and passionate division! Please don’t forget to bring a SHOEBOX filled with GIFTS (list on page 18) and food to share at the November DCM! We will be wrapping the boxes and writing cards to the recipients of our gifts, most of which are kids in third world countries! Make a difference in a child’s life today by attending the November DCM and participating in Operation Christmas Child! Also, if you didn’t already know, I only have another three months left as your Lieutenant Governor… My term is coming to an end soon… But don’t be sad! It also means that a new bumblebee will be taking my place! Lt. G elections will be held very soon so pay close attention for the date! WHAT IS THE ELIMINATE PROJECT? With The Eliminate Project, Kiwanis International and UNICEF have joined forces to eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus. This deadly disease steals the lives of nearly 60,000 innocent babies and a significant number of women each year. The effects of the disease are excruciating â&#x20AC;&#x201D; tiny newborns suffer repeated, painful convulsions and extreme sensitivity to light and touch.

WHAT IS MNT? MNT is Maternal Neonatal Tetanus. MNT is caused when tetanus spores, found in soil everywhere, come into contact with open cuts during childbirth. The disease strikes the poorest of the poor, the geographically hard to reach and those without health care.

KEY CLUB

Preferred Charities Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals (CMN Hospitals) is a nonprofit organization that raises money to benefit hospitalized kids while increasing awareness of its member hospitals. All CMN Hospitals contributions directly benefit hospitals, helping to purchase up-to-date equipment, train staff, conduct life-saving research, implement outreach programs and provide health care for children whose parents can’t afford to pay.

The mission of the March of Dimes is to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth, and infant mortality. March of Dimes was founded by our 32nd President, Franklin D. Roosevelt, in the fight against polio. After the discovery of the polio vaccine, March of Dimes focused their efforts to improve the health of babies and has been successful with the help and enthusiasm of many grassroots volunteers.

HOW DOES KEY CLUB HELP?

Since 1994, Key Club has been Trick Or Treating for UNICEF and over the years has raised nearly US$5 million for iodine deficiency programs worldwide and HIV and AIDS programs in Kenya and Swaziland. Now it’s helping The Eliminate Project.

Every year for Halloween, Jackson High School puts on a fun night for the community called October Fest! Each club at Jackson gets to run a booth for the children. Key Club, being the best club ever, gets the Haunted Hallway! Our members got to help set-up, pass out candy, and scare the children as they walked through our hallway. This was probably our most fun event this month! We had over 50 members help us out! HUGE thank you and shout-out to all our AMAZING members! You guys rock! Some children ended up crying (which wasn't good at the end) but we all had a great time! Can't wait for next year! â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Vania Park

Kamiak Key Club also raised a total of $1000.41 for Trick Or Treat For UNICEF! Many members volunteered to count money after school. We did Boo Bash with Mariner Key Club in October. It is an event put on by the city of Mukilteo where kids can trick-or-treat in a safe environment. Key Clubbers played games with adorable little kids and passed out candy. We dressed up in Halloween costumes, too. It was so much fun! â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Simran Handa, Co President 12

This month, for homecoming, we opened Cinderella's Closet, where girls could find good quality dresses for free. Cinderella’s Closet is the largest annual service project for Lake Steven’s Key Club! This year, we had more people come than ever before! – Jamie Santos, President

In the month of October, the Lynnwood Key Club has participated in many wonderful events such as elementary school carnivals and the SCIAW Walk and Roll. As an officer, it was impressive to witness the commitment and dedication of our fellow members. To my surprise, the freshmen have been the most involved members in our club. Membership in our school has almost doubled! Our club has gone from 68 members last year to 100+ members this year! I’m really looking forward to the continuous fervor and excitement from our Key Clubbers! Go Bees! – James Lee

One service project that Mariner Key Club participated in this month was helping out at Boo Bash at the Rose Hill Community Center! I was very glad to see the huge turnout of Mariner Key Clubbers that attended and helped with games, candy, setting up and tearing down! It also gave our club an opportunity to see and talk to different schools, as Kamiak was there as well. KEY CLUB Key Club Week gives you the opportunity to show your community what Key Club is truly about: service. Each day places an emphasis on service, to promote Key Club within our homes, schools and communities and to make Key Club a household name.

SUMMARY: 7 out of 12 schools in Division 21 were represented at the OCTOBER DCM! Division 21 bonded through playing icebreakers, snacking on some food and participating in a service project for the YMCA! Attendees were split into three groups and were able to accomplish making 100 goodie bags and 60 ghost lollipops for the Mill Creek YMCA Harvest Festival! Great job Division 21! WHY SHOULD YOU ATTEND DCMS? You should attend DCMS because it’s a great way to meet Key Clubbers within the division, get out of your comfort zone and experience what it’s like to be a part of something bigger than your club! DCMS are also SUPER FUN so don’t miss out on the experience!

A small shoebox can have a big impact. What goes into the box is fun, but what comes out of it is eternal. Be a part of changing children's lives all over the world in Jesus' Name through the power of a simple gift with Operation Christmas Child. People all over the United States have come together each year as a church, organization, school etc. to fill shoeboxes full of gifts that are delivered to over 100 million children in communities all around the world during the holiday season to those who have never received a gift.

WHAT TO BRING TO THE DCM: A SHOEBOX (there will be extras), GIFTS (see above) & FOOD (enough to share with everyone) This will be Division 21’s 3RD ANNUAL OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD PROJECT! Be sure to start collecting, shopping or putting together some of the items listed below in your shoebox! Don’t wait until last minute! Look for clearance items or even items you don’t use around the house! Try to stay within the $10-15 budget if necessary! TOYS: Include items that children will immediately embrace such as dolls, toy cars, stuffed animals, kazoos, harmonicas, yo-yos, jump ropes, balls, toys that light up and make noise (with extra batteries), etc. SCHOOL SUPPLIES: Pens, pencils, sharpeners, crayons, markers, notebooks, paper, solar calculators, coloring and picture books, etc. NON-LIQUID HYGIENE ITEMS: Toothbrushes, bar soap, combs, washcloths, etc. ACCESSORIES: T-shirts, socks, hats, sunglasses, hair clips, jewelry, watches, flashlights (with extra batteries), etc. CANDY: Only hard candy can be included such as lollipops etc. NO CHOCOLATE. 18

Have you ever wondered what it’s like to work with people your age from all over the Pacific Northwest? Are you interested in expanding and developing your leadership skills? Do you LOVE Key Club? Well then, if your answer was yes to all of the questions above, you should consider running for Lieutenant Governor of Division 21 for the 2015-2016 term! ANYONE in good standing with Key Club International is eligible to run for office! However, only 1 PERSON from each club can run. Running for Lieutenant Governor has made my high school experience extremely worthwhile. For those of you who didn’t know, I was a dedicated volleyball player before I joined Key Club and when I had to stop volleyball, I thought I would never find a passion for anything else… However, my involvement in Key Club changed that. From becoming a member to the President of my club and now, Lieutenant Governor of Division 21, I can tell you from personal experience that my high school experience became much more meaningful and memorable through Key Club.
