Zvonareva out of Australian Open with shoulder injury
R
ussian Vera Zvonareva will miss the Australian Open because of an injury to her right shoulder. The 28-year-old missed two Grand Slams in 2012 the French Open with the same injury and the US Open because of a viral illness. Zvonareva, the former world number two, has dropped to 49th in the rankings after a frustrating year in which she was knocked out in the third round of the French Open and

Mourinho vows to stay at Real Madrid
J
ose Mourinho insisted he would not resign as Real Madrid coach after his side lost 3-2 at Malaga to fall 16 points behind leaders Barcelona. Mourinho appeared incredulous when asked if he was worried about his job.
Isco put Malaga ahead in the 49th minute before an own-goal by Samuel Sanchez put Real level. Former Blackburn and Manchester City striker Roque Santa Cruz gave Malaga a two-goal breathing space with strikes in the 73rd and 76th minutes after
coming on as a substitute. Karim Benzema pulled one back eight minutes from time, but it was too late to prevent Malaga from clinching their first win over Real since 1983. Mourinho admitted that Real’s chances of defending their league title were now over.
The Portuguese manager also defended his decision to drop goalkeeper Iker Casillas to the bench, instead choosing to start 25-yearold Antonio Adan. It was the first time in 10 years that the World Cup winner had been dropped by Real.
Swans frustrate Red Devils
M
anchester United missed the chance to extend their lead in the title race to six points as Michu came out on top in the battle of the Premier League’s top scorers at the Liberty Stadium. Patrice Evra had given United the lead in the 16th minute as he headed home from a Robin van Persie corner. United will hold a four-point lead over Manchester City at Christmas but will be left to rue a series of missed chances during the final half hour when they piled the pressure on their hosts. Swansea felt they had shown United too much respect during this fixture last season but, after a slow start,
they showed little sign of being overawed as they took the game to the visitors. Dwight Tiendalli flashed a threatening ball across the six-yard box before Kemy Agustien freed Michu with a superb long ball, but the Spaniard sliced high and wide. David De Gea easily saved weak efforts from Wayne Routledge and Michu, but United halted the hosts’ building momentum as they took the lead. The Liberty Stadium faithful were further angered when Phil Jones was given only a yellow card for a clumsy lunge on Ben Davies, although replays suggested referee Michael Oliver had got the decision right.
Chelsea wallops Aston Villa 8-0
C
helsea turned on the style to completely destroy in-form Aston Villa and move back up to third place in the Premier League. Fernando Torres continued his resurgence under Blues manager Rafael Benitez with a towering third-minute header to set the Blues on their way.

Wimbledon. However, she won the Australian Open women’s doubles with compatriot Svetlana Kuznetsova in January, beating Italian duo Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci in the final. Zvonareva is yet to win a Grand Slam singles title, losing the US Open final to Kim Clijsters and the Wimbledon final to Serena Williams in 2010. The tournament runs from 6-12 January and the Australian Open in Melbourne starts on 14 January.
And a stunning David Luiz free-kick and Branislav Ivanovic header as good as wrapped up victory before the interval. Frank Lampard marked his 500th Premier League start by crashing home a fourth on the hour and two strikes from substitute Ramires, an Oscar penalty and a fine individual effort
from Eden Hazard rounded off the scoring. As well as providing more evidence of Chelsea’s growing momentum under Benitez, the thrashing revised the Premier League record books. The defeat was Aston Villa’s heaviest in topflight football. They have lost 7-0 on five previous occasions - most recently in 1950.

The result marked the first time seven players from one team have scored in a match and matched Chelsea’s record 8-0 win over Wigan from May 2010. A majestic performance from Lampard, and his midfield partner David Luiz, laid the platform for a dominant display that could have easily seen them reach double figures.
