Sport Competitive spirit in Ghana camp ahead of Mozambique clash today
G
hana’s star player Andre Ayew is out injured, but this has created healthy competition in the Black Stars camp ahead of their 2017 Africa Nations Cup Qualifier against Mozambique today in Accra. The Black Stars can secure early qualification to the finals in Gabon next year with wins over the Mambas over both legs to be held between now and next Tuesday. Swansea City attacker Ayew has been ruled out of double qualifier with an ankle injury, but this has seen several other players in the squad jump at the opportunity to take his place. Anderlecht winger Frank Acheampong is among three players looking for a starting XI place. Evans Mensah and WAFA youngster Samuel Tetteh will provide stiff competition for Acheampong. Providing extra excitement around this fixture, is the fact that Ghana’s experienced striker Asamoah Gyan is close to his 50th goal for his country and with 48 goals in 95 appearances, Ghana’s all-time leading
goal scorer could hit the mark over the two legs. Meanwhile opponents Mozambique will will look to Levante midfielder Simao Mate, who has played 25 Spanish LaLiga matches and scored one goal this season. Other players to watch out for in the Mambas squad include Benfica youth team midfielder Reinildo Isnard Mandava and China-based defender Zainadine Abdula Chavango. Also, the South African-based duo of Elias ‘Domingues’ Pelembe (Bidvest Wits) and Helder Pelembe (Bloemfontein Celtic) will also be exoected to add spark and a cteative edge to the visitors. Mozambique has lost their two qualifying matches so far in Group H, losing to Rwanda and Mauritius, and is bottom of the group. Ghana meanwhile are top with wins over Mauritius and Rwanda. This will be the fourth meeting between Ghana and Mozambique at senior level, with the Mambas yet to win a match.

Tunisia hoping to stop Adebayor at Monastir
D
espite starting the 2017 CAF Africa Cup of Nations Qualifiers on a high, Tunisia are now under pressure to get a win against Togo on Friday. The Carthage Eagles have registered an 8-1 victory over Djibouti in their first match in June before losing to Liberia away. The hosts will therefore target anything other than a win and boost their aspirations of making it to Gabon next year. Although they have the most goals in Group A with eight, the Tunisians find themselves languishing in third spot with three points behind Liberia and group leaders, Togo, who have two wins. Henry Kasperzcak will have to dig deep on his experience and motivate his side to going all out for a victory and improve their log standings. The coach will hope to build up on their recent 2016 CAF African Championships success after crashing out in the quarter-finals losing 2-1 to Mali. Focusing on the group leaders, the Sparrow Hawks will definitely target a win and ensure hey consolidate their top spot to make nine points next to their name. In their previous two qualifying ties, they bagged two wins defeating Liberia 2-1 and Djibouti 2-0 and this places them as favourites to get a win in Monastir. Coach Tom Saintfiet has worked wonders with the Togolese side and there seems to be an understanding between him and his charges.

West Ham confirm Benteke interest
W
est Ham chairman David Sullivan revealed his admiration for Christian Benteke but conceded the Liverpool striker’s wage demands are a stumbling block ahead of any potential move. Benteke is facing an uncertain future at Liverpool, having failed to fully convince manager Jurgen Klopp, though he has managed to score seven goals in 12 Premier League appearances. The 25-year-old Belgium international is reportedly a target for West Ham, who may be priced out of a deal. Benteke scored an injury-time winner in Liverpool’s 2-1 win at Crystal Palace on March 6, but was involved in a public discussion with Klopp following last weeks’ 3-2 loss against Southampton, having missed a glorious chance to put the Anfield club 3-1 ahead in the second half.
