Okowa re-election bid splits ‘Urhobo Nation’ in Delta From Nosa Akenzua, Asaba
T
he Urhobo Nation, across Delta State, has on Monday disagreed with Chief James Ibori over claim of massive Supports for the re-election bid of the state Governor, Dr Ifeanyi Okowa for the second term in office. Though Dr Okowa have been widely acclaimed to have performed creditably in the last three and half years, especially in the area of road construction, and was nicknamed” Road-master”, an urhobo group, however, known as “Urhobo Rennaissance initiative” cautioned Chief James, a two time governor of the state and Urhobo Nation leader against what they described as” Massive Supports for Dr Ifeanyi Okowa second term bid. In a press Statement Signed by One
Kingsley Efuetanu, National president, and Patrick Ivue Akpokona, General Secretary of the group respectively, the group alleged that Chief Ibori was being played Dr Okowa to achieve a predetermined desire. It insisted that Urhobo Nation was greater than any individual, and therefore called on the ex governor to watch his statement and consult Other leaders before reaching further conclusion if he Okowa believes he is for nobody and cannot stand for anybody. The group while outing some the alleged offences of Okowa to include: Chief Ighoyota Amori was set up in Delta central senatorial seat, Senator Nwaoboshi was pushed against Prince Ned Nwoko whose pupolarity and wealth Okowa hopes to harness for the general elections, adding that
today Senator Nwaoboshi has been unfairly treated by Dr Okowa in obvious preference for Prince Ned Nwoko. Other allegations by the group include: Senator James Manager Obvious Strong Supports for Dr Okowa’s victory in 2015,as not only did Okowa secure Ijaw supports through him and others, James Manager stood publicly and openly kicked against Dr Emmanuel Uduaghan for Dr Okowa to emerge the PDP Candidate in the state in 2014 primaries and, thereafter, made sure he got the Ijaw votes in 2015. Accordingly, the group further alleged that surprisingly however, Okowa kept mute in the electoral contest between two very faithful of PDP in the state, and his loyal allies, Senator James Manager and Chief Michael Didn’t alias Ejele for both of
them to contest the Senatorial race for Delta South senatorial district. The statement reads in part: “They both had brusises and unsavory tales to tell from the contest,Chief Ejele fought his Kingsman,Dr Emmanuel Uduaghan to a stand still financially and morally, mobilizing against his own just for Dr. Okowa to clinch the ticket and today he abandoned both to fight each other, indifferent to their plights and unnecessary financial wastage.” The group urges Chief Ibori to take a second look at the so called loyalty story of Dr Okowa and his declaration of unalloyed and total Supports for him, Okowa, warning that whatever Okowa was doing with him but using he Ibori personality was a ruse and personal agenda not for the interest of Urhobos or Urhobo nation.

Lake Chad: 40 million persons threaten World Peace, Buhari warns
By Lawrence Olaoye
P
resident Muhammadu Buhari has warned world leaders that 40 million persons from the Lake Chad region pose serious threats to World Peace, should they not address the redirection of water into the dangerously receding lake. Buhari gave this warning while receiving Letters of Credence from the High Commissioner of Canada to Nigeria, Philip Baker, at the Presidential Villa, yesterday. The President, according to a statement made available to news men by his media aide, Femi Adesina, said the tragedy of the shrinking Lake Chad will continue to fuel more illegal migrations, banditry and provide willing hands for terrorism since majority of the people have lost their means of livelihood. “In 1920s, an academic rightly
predicted that except there’s a redirection of water to Lake Chad, it will dry up. “Now, whenever I go for any global meeting or visit a country, I will always draw the world’s attention to the adverse effect of climate change on the lake, and the resulting negative effects,’’ he said. Buhari urged the Canadian government to support the ongoing efforts to divert water from the Congo River to the lake. “Canada has the capacity to help us. The lake is now less than ten percent of its normal size. A redirection will help our people from getting into the Mediterranean Sea,’’ he added. The President said Nigeria and Canada have good relations dating back to the early 60s when Nigeria gained independence, commending the country for “its vast resource utilization and solid political background.’’
In his remarks, the Canadian High Commissioner commended President Buhari for providing leadership in the country, and championing the cause for the replenishing of the Lake Chad Basin, noting that the Canadian Governor General, Julie Payette, had presented a picture taken from space of the vanishing lake to the President when she visited recently. Baker said more than 11, 000 Nigerians were studying in Canada, with many residing in the country, assuring the President that majority of the students return to build and invest their knowledge in the development of Nigeria. The Canadian High Commissioner said he would work towards improving relations between both countries on migration, education, entrepreneurship training, mining, renewable energy and
Information Technology. Receiving Letters of Credence from the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Catriona Wendy Campbell Laing, Buhari said Nigeria remains grateful for the training support for the military in the North Eastern part of the country since it started fighting Boko Haram. The President congratulated Campbell Laing on her posting to the country, pointing out that Nigeria appreciates its relations with the United Kingdom, and will continue to pursue mutual interest in trade and economic issues. In her remarks, the British High Commissioner said the visits of the Prime Minister, Theresa May and Prince of Wales, Charles Philip Arthur George, to Nigeria last year were to further consolidate relations, and look forward to Nigeria’s support after Brexit.
