A
uthorities of University of Benin (UNIBEN) have inaugurated the first phase of completed projects at newly developed ‘site B’ segment, Ugbowo Campus of the Institution. Kano Emir and Chancellor of the University, HRH, Muhammad Sanusi II, performed the inauguration and other projects at Ugbowo Campus of the ivory tower on the sidelines of the 43rd Convocation of the University. A statement that emanated from the Public Relations officer (PRO) of the University, Mr. Michael Osasuyi, listed the projects at ‘site B’ to include two number football pitch at the sports Complex, Gulf court, Veterinary offices for staff, veterinary laboratory, Botanic garden which will boost research and Scientific studies on animals welfare. Osasuyi, in the statement which was made available yesterday to journalists in Benin City, said the feat “is in line with the 5-year development plan of the University under the leadership of its Vice-Chancelor, Prof. Faraday Orumwense few years ago, towards expanding the frontiers of warning and teaching”. The projects were funded by Federsl government Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND) and NEEDS assessment, Internally generated revenue (IGR from UNIBEN and UNIBEN Alumni association. Aso inaugurated by the Chancellor at the main Campus, we’re a female hostel block, Centre of Excellence in reproductive Health and Innovation (CERHI), library and lecture Theatre halls for Faculty at the Education; ultra-modern studio for Faculty of Environmental Science and the UNIBEN Micro finance. The Bank which is located few meters away from the Faculty of Education is expected to provide Banking services to staff, students and the public, was donated by the Alumni association of the University. Engr Wilfred Irogue, Deputy Director of works during the facility, informed the Chancellor that the the Micro Finance Bank had been approved by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). Besides, the facilities will among others, provide social amenities and development to its immediate Communities including Igue-Ehana and Uteh-Koko and discourage further encroachment on the University land by land speculators. Principal Officers of the Institution led by its Pro-chancellor, Hon. Isa Ashiru, Vice-Chancelor of the University, Prof. Faraday Orumwense, the Registrar, Mrs. Otasowie Oshodin, the University Liberian, Dr. (Mrs) Evelyn Omoluabi Idiodi, the Director pf Physical planning (DPP), Architect Timmy Ikhisemojie, Provost and Deans from the various Faculties led by Prof. Victor Edosa Omozuwa, Dean of Post Graduate studies (UNIBEN) accompanied the Kano Emir, HRH Muhammad Sanusi II on the exercise.
5 graduates of UniAbuja get distinction in surgery

he Pro-chancellor/ Chairman of the Governing Council of the University of Abuja, Alhaji Sani Maikudi, has disclosed that five out of eighteen medical graduands of the institution came out with distinction in surgery. The five medical graduands include; Adamu Dahiru Bara, Imam Abubakar, Ugwuneji Uchenna Okechukwu, Okoli Dabeochukwu Uzoamaka and Chuckwurah Uchenna Jude. during an interaction with newsmen at the permanent site of the university, applauding the graduands for their commitment, focus as well as perseverance in pursuing their studies for twelve years. His words: “In fact, it is worthy of note that during the challenging periods of the medical college before its final accreditation the NUC approved a special programme for the current graduads to obtain by examination a pre-medical degree in medical Biochemistry which makes them now proud recipient of two first degrees of the University of
Abuja, one in basic medical sciences obtained in 2016 and the other in medicine and surgery to be conferred in 2018”. He charged the graduating medical students to always possess good character in the years ahead as they were trained to render selfless service to humanity in anywhere they found themselves. He said: “We pray that you will continue to excel in your endeavours and be shining examples of what the university stands for”. He therefore, expressed joy as the management of the
University of Abuja graduated the first pointing out that the leadership of the Governing Council are ready to support the University administration in all ramifications. The Pro-chancellor, however, briefed that the courses like Engineering, Veterinary medicine as well as Agriculture had been given accreditation fully. Also speaking during the press briefing, the Vice-chancellor of the University, Prof. Michael Adikwu, revealed that fifty out of fifty-three courses run by the University were accredited by NUC.

Again, NAAT, NASU, SSANU embark on strike By Usman Shuaibu

he Joint Action Committee (JAC) of the National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT), NonAcademic Staff Union (NASU) and educational institutions as well as Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) on Tuesday commenced strike following the Federal Government refusal to attend to their demands during its previous strike.
The chairman of JAC of the University of Abuja, Comrade Israel Orokpo, disclosed this in an interview with newsmen at the permanent site of the University of Abuja, pointing out that the strike is total comprehensive and indefinite nationwide. Orokpo said the three unions had deemed it necessary to go on the strike over the non-payment of earned allowances as well as non-implementation of CONTISS 14 and 15 for technologists by the
Federal Government. He said some of the reasons the Unions were embarking on the strike include; Inadequate infrastructural decay at the university, lack of good governance as well as shortfall in payment of salaries by the government of the day. He added that the other reasons for the strike were the refusal of the Federal Government to provide adequate teaching as well learning facilities
at the universities, failure of the government to stop the corruption in the University system as well as non-compliance by Nigerian government to fund the university staff schools despite the National Industrial Court (NIC) judgment among other pressing demands by the JAC. He said the unions would not call-off the strike until their issues are being looked into, by the government.
Etsu Nupe commends IBBUL on Bida Basin hydrocarbon exploration research From Yakubu Minna

he Etsu Nupe, Alhaji Yahaya Abubakar has applauded the efforts of the authorities of Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University Lapai (IBBUL) for the progress recorded on the Bida Basin Hydrocarbon Exploration Research. The royal father expressed his view when the Vice Chancellor, Prof Nasiru Maiturare visited his Wadata Palace in Bida.
He, however, said he was delighted that the University has continued with the research work, especially the involvement of NNPC in the funding of the research efforts. He noted that reports reaching his palace indicate significant progress had been made on hydrocarbon potentials of the basin, after the NNPC wade into the research work. He expressed the hope that oil and gas will be discovered in commercial quantity in the basin which will leads to exploration
of oil and gas by oil companies. The Etsu Nupe said he was willing to assist and support the University towards achieving the desired goals as well as providing unfiltered access to any area of research interest in his domain. Earlier in his remarks, the Vice Chancellor, Prof Nasiru Maiturare commended the defunct Gubernatorial Committee on Bida Basin Development for providing the first complete geological map of the basin.
He said it was in recognition of the outstanding work done by the University in that direction that the NNPC commissioned the University to undertake Field Mapping and geological studies of the Bida and Sokoto basins. The Vice Chancellor. Prof Nasiru Maiturare expressed gratitude and appreciation to the state Governor, Alhaji Abubakar Sani Bello for his interest in the project and escalating the research report to the federal government.
