Coach wants NSC to hands off sports federations

N

nenna Etim, a former Assistant Coach of the Super Falcons, yesterday called on the National Sports Commission (NSC) to adopt holistic concessioning of sports federations by handling them over to corporate organisations for better management. Etim said in Lagos that the government should also reduce the tax burden of organisations disposed to the management of the federations. “There should be a company attached to the various sports federation because I think that is the only way to develop sports in Nigeria. That is what is obtainable in countries like the U.S. and the UK, which is why they are doing well in sports. There is no government telling them what to do because it is their money,’’ she said. Etim insisted that true concessioning would lead to proper management of the federations as the corporate

entities are likely to commit their best hands to run the federations. According to her it was obvious that government is having difficulty to adequately fund and manage the sports federations. She cited the example of the All Stars Female Football Championship, which had not been accorded the necessary assistance by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF). “Since the NFF does not want to do what is right by supporting the c h a m p i o n s h i p , government should encourage companies to support it. “It is sad that a championship that has produced great female football players like Kikelomo Ajayi and Ann Chiejine for the country could be treated this way. Without this championship, female football will die because it is the bedrock of female football at the

grassroots,’’ she said. It would be recalled that since its inception in 2000, the championship had been bankrolled by the Amalgamation of Nigeria Female Football Coaches Association. The 13th edition is scheduled to hold from Jan. 8 to Jan.19. The competition would be preceded by a seeding of teams, before the commencement of hostilities on Jan. 12. She added that due to lack of viable sponsors, most of the upcoming players in the competition were becoming discouraged.

“Most of these girls did not want to come because they told me that they were getting discouraged since there was no sponsor to help in the area of transportation and accommodation. “If the girls can see people from the NFF, I am sure that their hopes will be restored, knowing that the competition is not being neglected by those who should support it. “We are trying to help the country by getting and training the young girls but they are seriously ignoring us and undermining our importance,’’ she added.

... As George-Taylor insists on autonomy for sports federations

R

otimi GeorgeTaylor, the immediate-past President of the Nigeria Boxing Federation (NBF), has urged stakeholders to foster zonal autonomy in the election into the sports federations. “I believe that the zones should be allowed to function because you find that the core stakeholders are usually those in the zones,” George-Taylor told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) yesterday in Lagos, According to him, autonomous federation would be creative and success because they drive to attain clear cut objectives devoid of bureaucracy would be paramount. The former Boxing federation president added that the granting of autonomy to the federations was a move that was long overdue adding that government should not be involved in the appointment of officials for the federations. “The federations should be

allowed to function independently as you cannot sit somewhere and be organising something for a federation without involving the federation directly. “It simply means that the officials of such a federation cannot be held accountable in such circumstances. I think the minister is moving in the right direction; the more they give them powers, the more they can now set their own targets and become accountable to their stakeholders. “If the international parent bodies are aware that government has been appointing secretaries for the federations, they will certainly frown seriously at it as it is not allowed,’’ George-Taylor said. He observed that sports in general lacked the required sponsorships to enhance its profile in the country. “We don’t have the required sponsorships in sports right now, as government is the only viable sponsor and that’s why they always call the shots,’’ he added.
