News 15 killed, 40,000 displaced in fresh Adamawa communal clash

A
fresh communal or sectarian crisis involving suspected Fulani herdsmen and villagers of Kodomun village has claimed lives of fifteen (15) people in Demsa Local Government of Adamawa state. Reports from the area revealed that, suspected Fulani herdsmen unleashed terror attack on Kodomun village and other adjourning villages Monday around 3.00pm when some of villagers were resting after a burial of lost old women.
Recall that, the crisis started in January in Koh communities where suspected Fulani herdsmen launched an attack killing many farmers including a police officer who was the Divisional police officer(DPO)of Vonokilang Division under Girei Local Government Area in the state. Some villagers who escaped from the area by the whiskers told journalists that the the figure might be much higher as scores of others are still missing in the hinterland. They said fighting is still ranging in the remotest part of
the communities as the suspected herdsmen operates from their hideouts at will to attack their defenseless farmers. The Brigade Commander of the 23rd Armored Brigade, Yola, Brigadier General Benson Akiroluyo, Adamawa State Commissioner of Police, Mohammed Ghazzali and State Deputy Governor, Mr. Martins Babable Tuesday visited the area for an on-the-spot assessment of the troubled area. Police in Akwa Ibom arrest man for allegedly killing own daughter

he Akwa Ibom Police Command has arrested a 30-year-old chief priest, Eno Akpan, for allegedly killing his one year old daughter, Favour Ufot. Akpan, who hails from Ikot Akpan Udo village in Ikot Abasi Local Government Area, is the priest of the village shrine. The State Police Commissioner, Murtala Mani, said in Uyo on Monday, that Akpan had a misunderstanding with his wife, Blessing, which resulted to his beating her up. Mani who spoke through the State Police Public
Relations Officer, ASP Cordelia Nwawe, said that during the scuffle, Blessing ran to her mother’s house and left her daughter behind with her husband. “On July 23, the complainant, Blessing, had misunderstanding with the husband, Eno Akpan. In the process the husband beat her up. “She left the house to her mother’s place, leaving her daughter, the deceased behind. “The husband asked her to come back home and take the child along, she refused and the husband used machete and inflicted cuts on the back and head of their daughter and she died on the spot,” he said.
The police commissioner said that investigation was in progress and the suspect would appear in court after investigation. On his own part, Akpan said that he had a scuffle with his wife over her lateness in returning from the market where she went to sell oysters. He said that he used his fists on her, but by the time he picked up a machete to strike her, she pushed their daughter forward and the machete landed on her head. Akpan said that he did not mean to hurt the girl, but her mother’s action resulted in her death. (NAN)

The council chairman announced that a newly elected councilor for the area, Mr. Hani Habila was among the victims of the Skirmishes, saying that over 40,000 people have been rendered homeless occasioned by the attack. Mr. Wale Fwa disclosed that council in conjunction with security agencies, the traditional institution are making frantic efforts for possible dialogue among the waiving groups. Adamawa State Commissioner of Police, Mohamed Ghazzali and Brigade Commander of the 23rd Armored Brigade, Yola, Brigadier General Benson Akiroluyo called for serious caution in handling civil unrest. The two security chiefs stated that they are watching the situation for possible next line of action.

he Police in Enugu have solicited the support of Nigerians in their efforts at ridding the society of crime and ensuring the safety of lives and property. The spokesman of the Police Command in Enugu State, Mr Ebere Amaraizu, made the appeal in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Enugu on Monday. According to Amaraizu, the success of the police anywhere in the world, depends to a very large extent, on the level of co-operation they get from citizens. Amaraizu, urged members of the public to help the police monitor the activities of suspicious neighbours. He said the police were ready to treat any security information with a high degree of sensitivity and secrecy. (NAN)
Fraudster using Ogoni cleanup to extort from unsuspecting public - FG

he Federal Government has warned the public to beware as fraudsters are using the Ogoniland cleanup to extort money from unsuspecting people from people of the Niger Delta. This is contained in a statement issued by Alhaji Isiaka Yusuf, the Director of Press, Federal Ministry of Environment,on Monday. ``It has come to the knowledge of
the Federal Ministry of Environment that some dubious individuals may use the opportunity of the project to extort money from the unsuspecting people of the Niger Delta communities. ``This includes the forgery of Federal Government Agencies letters,’’ Yusuf said. He said since after the inauguration of the cleanup, the ministry had been consulting with the
stakeholders in the Niger Delta with a view to ensuring a proper cleanup. ``Without doubt, we wish to state that the Federal Government in collaboration with other stakeholders in the oil industry is funding the project. ``It has not and will not authorise or contract individuals, groups and or organizations to collect money from the good people of the Niger Delta
on behalf of the government for the purpose of cleanup of Ogoniland and other oil impacted communities in the Niger Delta region. ``In view of the foregoing, the ministry hereby warns that anybody, groups or organisations found extorting money from the people for the purpose of the Ogoniland cleanup project will be made to face the full wrath of the law,’’ Yusuf said.
He advised the general public to report anybody, group and or organisation collecting money from people for the cleanup to the police or any other law enforcement agencies. ``The ministry, therefore, takes this opportunity to reiterate the Federal Government’s commitment in ensuring the transparent and successful cleanup of Ogoniland,’’ he said.
