T

he Regional Director of World Health Organisation (WHO) in the African Region, Dr Matshidiso Moeti, has said that over 70 million people in Africa, are affected by hepatitis B and C, which he described as a silent epidemic affecting many people. Speaking to mark World Hepatitis Day, Moeti said “among infected persons, 9 out of every 10 have never been tested because of lack of awareness and poor access to testing and treatment.” On the global statistics, Moeti said “worldwide, there are 323 million people infected with Hepatitis B or C virus, a burden 10 times larger than the HIV epidemic. Over 1.4 million people die annually from liver disease caused by untreated infection including two out of every three liver cancer deaths”. WHO on Saturday, while joining in the global celebration of the World Hepatitis Day, themed; “Test. Treat. Hepatitis” said the event was to draws attention to hepatitis B and C virus infections that cause long term (chronic) inflammation of the liver that leads to extensive scarring, liver cancer and untimely death. “The goal of the World Hepatitis Day is to raise awareness of these infections and the importance of testing early because treatment is readily available”. While giving example of of a 23 year old, the Regional Director said, “I share the story of Bari, a 23-year-old boy who was diagnosed with Hepatitis B infection. His older sister developed yellow eyes and swollen belly, and recently died of liver cancer. It was horrifying to discover the cause of her illness was hepatitis B infection. We must have become infected through minor cuts and close contact in childhood. We did not know that the infection could be silent for so long and its consequences so devastating. “There is hope for Bari and millions like him. Cost effective medicines are available to control hepatitis B infection and prevent liver disease. Also, the Hepatitis B vaccine given at birth, together

with infant vaccination, prevents over 95% of new infections that leads to liver cancer in later life. For Hepatitis C, newly available treatment can cure the infection in almost all patients within 12 weeks. “Today, I call on Member States to develop costed, National strategic Plans to serve as roadmaps for elimination of viral hepatitis. I urge countries to invest in the

hepatitis response by scaling up domestic funding, and providing testing and treatment facilities, leveraging on the existing health infrastructure for HIV and other infectious disease.” She said WHO commends the efforts of the Global Fund in providing testing and treatment for Hepatitis C among patients receiving HIV care, and call on other partners

to support the hepatitis response in Africa. Health care workers, non-governmental organizations, civil society and people living with viral hepatitis must play a vital role in raising awareness and promoting testing and treatment for Hepatitis B and C. I call on researchers to work on simplifying testing and treatment, and find a cure for hepatitis B infection and a vaccine for hepatitis C.

he Minister of State, Health, Dr. Osagie Ehanire has charged the new Executive members of Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) to show compassion while managing Emergency and Accident cases in hospitals by ensuring that prompt and adequate attention was given to the victims, as required. The ministry in a statement issued yesterday by Mrs. Boade Akinola, its Director, Media and Public Relations, said the Minister gave the charge while receiving the Executive members of the group led by their President, Dr. Francis Faduyile, who were on a courtesy visit to his office, in Abuja, recently. Dr. Ehanire said that human live was sacred and Medical profession was a divine calling, as such, health professionals, particularly Medical doctors needed to have a change of attitude towards their patients while discharging their duties. In his words, “As keepers of a profession that has to do with human existence, you need compassion, dedication, integrity and selflessness. As team leaders you must remember to carry others along because quality health care delivery requires the cooperation of everyone involved, success requires team work”.

The Minister further urged the new Executive Members to ensure better working relationship with other associations within the sector. This, according to him, would stem the tide of strike actions in the sector which would consequently attract the implementation of the No- work –No Pay sanction by the government. Dr. Ehanire assured the group that the Federal Ministry of Health would continue to partner with the Association and other professional bodies within the sector towards achieving a strike free and peaceful atmosphere in the sector for the betterment of Nigerians. He assured that the Federal Ministry of Health was committed to resolve every issue fundamental towards improving the welfare of Health Professionals. Speaking earlier, the President of NMA, Dr. Francis Faduyile, said that there was need to ensure the release of the white paper report by the Alhaja Yayale Ahmed led Presidential Committee on experts on Inter- Professional Relationship in the Public Health Sector, adding that it would play a vital role towards achieving peace in the health sector.
