fall guide Greetings & Welcome to the 2012-13 Ucluelet Parks & Recreation Fall Guide! Parks & Recreation has seen many shifts and a general refocusing this past year. Our role in community wellness and development, and how we can better serve the community are areas in which we are focusing. We’ve had a very exciting year in 2012. Youth programming has been well established and supported, and we are looking forward to our next steps in further developing this valued program area. This past April the District of Ucluelet hosted the Association of Vancouver Island and Coastal Communities conference. Conference attendees, including mayors and councillors from across Vancouver Island, were effusive in their praise of the conference and of the town of Ucluelet. Ucluelet Community Centre certainly proved itself as a conference facility while local businesses and community members that supported and were involved in the conference were given high praise as well. We look forward to seeing what the rest of the year will bring! Another 2011 highlight has been the draft plan of the Ucluelet Parks & Recreation Department Master Plan. Our hard working and dedicated Recreation Commission are currently in the revision process of providing a practical and visionary plan for Ucluelet. Sadly, the Commission lost one of its own as Bob O’Connor passed away this July. Bob will long be remembered for his vision, get it done attitude and of course his hot dogs! On the Parks front, we have seen the completion of Lion’s Park and a strong focus on community beautification. Fall projects include the development of the St. Jacques Street Park and the skateboard park next steps. Community meetings regarding these Parks & Recreation topics and much more will also be held this fall. We invite all public input and feedback and look forward to receiving your thoughts and ideas. On behalf of the Ucluelet Parks & Recreation Department, I would also like to thank our outstanding volunteers and community committee members. Without their hard work, countless hours of dedication and vision, much of what we have to offer would not exist. Parks and Recreation is both an end and a means to achieving an end. It is a fundamental, core building block of our notion of healthy flourishing communities. Ucluelet Parks & Recreation will continue to strive in providing opportunities for quality recreational services, parks, special events, and gathering places through outstanding programming, facilities, green spaces and customer services. As always, I look to your input, vision, and feedback as to what the Ucluelet Parks & Recreation Department means to you and your community and how we can expand this essential service. Please do not hesitate to contact me at 250-726-7772 ext. 224 or afortune@ucluelet.ca. Enjoy your community, get involved, get active, be inspired and don’t forget to have some fun!

Ucluelet parks & recreation

Rec Star Spotlight: Geoff and Lucia Lyons Long term citizens of Ucluelet (Lucia is a “lifer” and Geoff has been here since 1984) this active couple has been involved in recreation for a combined total of over 50 years in our community! Geoff, originally from England where he played recreational soccer, moved to Ucluelet and was looking for something to do on wet winter evenings. Finding out the USS Gym was available, he rounded up a bunch of “keeners” and with the help of Lucia and co-referee Eric Russcher, has since looked after indoor and much of the outdoor soccer in Ucluelet. Geoff also took on drop in badminton at USS in 1996, citing the sports lack of height restriction as one of his prime motivators! Geoff even hosted a couple of drop in Cricket games, as well as teaching cricket for a short period. Lucia became involved in volleyball as a student at USS and has carried it on as an evening drop in program there for over 25 years. She has been involved in coaching USS Basketball and Volleyball, and her years as a “West Coast Hockey Mum” has left her much in support of an arena on the west coast. Geoff and Lucia believe recreation to be an important factor in community health. They feel the lack of physical exercise in our lives, evidenced by rising obesity rates is frightening, and encourage people to participate in community sports, including the drop in activities that they have worked hard to continue at USS. For a full schedule of drop-in programs, please see page 20. Anyone wishing to help can get in touch with Geoff or Lucia. At 65 Geoff doesn’t think he has more than 20 more good years left in him, and says it would take a good 2 hours to pass on all his skills to anyone interested in helping out. We at Ucluelet Parks & Recreation beg to differ and give warm thanks to Geoff and Lucia for all their years of hard work and dedication to community sports and beyond.

Thank-you Lucia & Geoff! w w w. u c l u e l e t. c a

DANCE CHOREOGRAPHY Age 12+ Students will be introduced to different ways of creating dance. We will work individually, in small groups, and as a whole to create new works in many different styles including jazz, lyrical, modern and ballet. For this class, dance experience is less important than a willingness to work hard & take chances!

SARAH HOGAN Sarah Hogan attended the Lincoln County School of Performing arts in Niagara-on-theLake, Ontario where she majored in Dance. She performed in and choreographed several productions including: The Wiz, Oliver, Animal Farm and Grease. “Being a part of these productions taught me so much about dedication and teamwork. They were also incredibly fun and I would love to share this type of experience with our local children & youth.” Since moving to Ucluelet, Sarah has choreographed dances for the Rainforest Dancers for competitions and local performances.

Ucluelet Family Ties

is a program open to all expectant parents and new parents in Ucluelet and area. We're located in the Coastal Communities Services Hub, part of the new Ucluelet Community Centre! Family Ties runs a weekly drop in at the Hub, where parents can gather to chat, visit and participate in a discussion on a topic of interest. There's snacks, toys for little ones, an outreach worker and the Public Health Nurse is also on hand. Got a question? There's an answer; from the nurse, the outreach worker, or an experienced parent in the group. Got a concern? The outreach worker can help gather information, attend appointments, follow up with you. Celebrating a milestone? Baby's first smile, rolling over, first tooth? Come share with the group! Expectant parents have an added challenge living on the coast, because birth services must be accessed outside our communities. Family Ties can be a source of support before and after your little one arrives. Prenatal classes are arranged as needed; if you're expecting please let us know if you'd like to attend a series. Information is tailored to west coast parents' needs. Experienced parents are welcome too; come visit, chat, share your wisdom!
