The 11th annual Dastar Competition & Celebration brought upward of 5,000 people to the Grand Taj Banquet Hall on Monday to enjoy the festive turban-tying contest, presented by the Sher-E-Punjab radio station. The competition, touted as the largest of its kind in North America, drew hundreds of members from the South Asian community to try their hand at tying turbans. The contest was split into numerous categories by age, gender and style of “dastar” – the Punjabi term for turban, referring to several types of headwear – including peaked turbans, keskis and dumallas. Participants ranged in age from four to 68, some of whom came from Washington and California.
Bronze, silver and gold medals were up for grabs in the day’s competition as a panel of judges evaluated turbans based on symmetry, folds, overall look and whether or not the cloth touched the ground while tying. Awards were also given out in such categories as Best Dressed Matching Couples, Most Unique Dastar, and Best Culturally Dressed Children, Teens and Adults. The Dastar Competition & Celebration was started by the Sher-EPunjab radio station in 2002 after the

attacks of 9/11 stereotyped turbanwearing individuals as terrorists and sparked numerous assaults on those who wear turbans. The event was designed to educate others and raise awareness about how turbans in Sikh culture symbolize such core values as discipline, honesty, integrity and spirituality. The all-day celebration also included live bhangra music and dance, refreshments, a kids zone, facepainting and door prizes.
