Mermaid tale

They’re real all right – and thanks to Surrey mom, the proof is in the pool

Mermaid tails made by Monika Naumann of Surrey are modelled by, from left, Maleka Rostami, Julia Naumann, Allison Meyer, Megan Naumann and Lani Carbonel.

Now contributor winterharp@telus.net

SURREY – When Monika Naumann came home one day, she was amazed at what she saw. Three mermaids were swimming in her backyard pool. OK, she recognized the mermaids — they were her three daughters. But where did they get the mermaid tails? Turns out that when mom was out,

the kids went into her closet, found some nylon pants and turned them into mermaid tails with flippers at the bottom. “I laughed and thought, ‘what crazy kids,’” said Naumann. The Surrey mom thought the mermaid fad would disappear in a day or two, but it did not. Her daughters, Megan, Julia and Kristy, youngsters at the time, were crazy

for mermaids. They had watched all the mermaid movies, and Kristy had drawn countless mermaid pictures. Three years ago, Megan, who was 12 at the time, was online looking for mermaid tails to buy. She found a tail she liked from a European maker, and so the girls ordered themselves tails. But the tails didn’t last too long, said Naumann. “The tail fin cracked three times and the design was such that it

gave the kids blisters on their feet.” Naumann looked the tail over and figured she could do better. So after three months of designing, she fashioned a tail that made her proud. Of course, the girls were thrilled to have mom making tails for them. And in no time they were making a splash everywhere they went. see MOM TURNS MERMAID › page 3

George Massey Tunnel

Traffic nightmare may get scarier Despite ‘soapbox’ warnings, Jackson says future of tunnel is lined with trucks

Delta Optimist

DELTA – It seems more and more traffic will be added to the already congested George Massey Tunnel, says Mayor Lois Jackson. Jackson was commenting on yet another report, this one a Canadian Environmental Assessment Act screening report for Port Metro Vancouver, that outlined how even more traffic will be headed through the 53-year-old crossing. “We have been on this soapbox for a number of years. People on this soapbox have been saying to provincial and federal governments they know how many people we’re going to have using it, but nothing has been done,” she said. Delta council recently discussed the 400-plus-page environmental assessment report on the Deltaport Terminal, Road and Rail Improvement Program. The series of road and rail enhancements are to help the existing container port increase capacity. The screening report concludes that “with the implementation of proposed mitigation measures, the project is not likely to cause significant adverse environmental, socio-economic/community or cumulative effects.” However, a Delta staff report on

This scenario at the George Massey Tunnel isn’t likely to change anytime soon. (Photo: DELTA OPTIMIST) the assessment notes the project will result in an additional 1,000 two-way average daily truck trips by 2017 (for a daily total of 4,500 trips), of which 35 per cent would use the tunnel. This means there would be an additional 450 truck trips through the tunnel (for a daily total of 1,700). The report notes no specific mitigation is proposed for the tunnel. However, Port Metro Vancouver is continuing to work on improving traffic management in South Delta. Delta is asking the port authority to continue to work with senior levels of government to resolve the issue of congestion at the tunnel, “which remains a very significant concern for the Delta community.” Earlier this year, council

agreed to commission a study of the economic impact of traffic congestion at the tunnel. Officials hope the study will convince the provincial and federal governments of the need to commit funding to the crossing that opened in 1959. A request for proposals for the study noted the tunnel’s limited capacity is already contributing to severe traffic congestion. The tender also noted a significant increase in the number of vehicle trips is expected from development of Tsawwassen First Nation land, the possible construction of Terminal 2 and residential growth south of the Fraser River. Jackson said the study is almost complete. She said Delta officials have

had meetings with the provincial ministry of transportation about the traffic situation. “If you include the B.C. Ferries (terminal in Tsawwassen), the First Nation and the port and port expansion, in that one small area of the west coast, I think they thought the South Fraser Perimeter Road was going to be the solution to all the problems. In my opinion, we’re going to have to analyze that pretty closely,” she said. “The ferries, First Nation and port simply go about their business, simply expecting all the infrastructure to be there for them.” Delta would like to see a planning process identify options to address both current traffic concerns as well as future traffic growth.

WHITE ROCK – A celebration of the life of Mary-Wade Anderson is set for Wednesday, July 11. The long time city councillor passed away from heart complications on June 26 at the age of 84, four weeks after she was admitted to Peace Arch Hospital. Anderson served on White Rock city council for 12 years and served on many committees and board during that time. A byelection will be held this fall to fill Anderson’s spot on city council. The public memorial will run from 2 to 4 p.m. on July 11 at the White Rock Community Centre, 15154 Russell Ave. in rooms A, B and C.

Mom turns mermaid tail hobby into online business ‹ from page 1

Monika Naumann

Imagine being on holiday, suntanning by the hotel pool when suddenly three long-haired mermaids come along and turn the pool into a scene from H2O. Naumann and her husband Andy have taken their mermaids on trips as far as the Dominican Republic, Turks and Caicos and Hawaii. Everywhere they go, they turn heads. “People are so amazed. It’s so fun to watch their reaction,” said Naumann. “One woman asked

Megan not to take her tail off, as her daughter thought Megan was a real, true mermaid. Megan had to sit on the edge of the pool and answer the child’s questions such as, ‘How do you brush your teeth underwater?’” People wanted to know where the girls got their tails. And that got Naumann thinking she could make and sell them. Last January, Naumann started a website and has sold more than two dozen tails since, with two going all the way to Norway. One tail was a

special-edition gold tail for a model at a lingerie store in Washington State. Naumann was even contacted by makers of a TV show in California looking for the perfect tail, although they later changed their mind. Each tail costs $250, plus shipping charges. “It’s a hobby, but I’m not sure it’s going to be a big business,” said Naumann, who grew up sewing under the guidance of her mother, a seamstress. Naumann named her company

3-Fins Custom Mermaid Tails (3fins.com), in honour of her three mermaid daughters who love the shiny, colourful tails made by their mother. Naumann uses stretchy dance fabric for the tails with flippers attached to a lexan fin. The girls, now aged 13 to 22, are usually out “mermaiding” once a week in the pool at Surrey Sport and Leisure Centre. And with the good weather, they will soon be heading to Hjorth Road Pool.

Tom Zytaruk

Now staff twitter@tomzytaruk

SURREY – Canada’s Public Safety Minister Vic Toews is OK with Mounties having their own watering hole built into the RCMP’s new “E” Division headquarters in Green Timbers. “I am satisfied that because of some of the social occasions that occur inside these headquarters it is warranted, but I expect it to be dealt with appropriately if there is any potential for abuse,” Toews said. “Certainly no on-duty officers can be served liquor and the RCMP officers themselves provision and pay for that officers’ mess.” Toews was in Surrey to discuss RCMP accountability. Namely, Bill C-42, the proposed Enhancing RCMP Accountability Act, which, according to a federal government press release, “will advance the Government’s commitment to modernizing the RCMP and strengthen its accountability to Canadians.” Roughly 2,700 RCMP personnel are expected to move into the force’s new “E” Division headquarters next year, at 14200 Green Timbers Way in Surrey. Like the old headquarters on Vancouver’s Heather Street, the new building will have a “mess hall” for off-duty Mounties. Surrey’s will have 500 seats. “This is not divergent from past practice and it has not been identified as a problem,” Toews told the Now. “I can assure you that if there is a problem in that respect, I would expect the commissioner to deal with it.” The proposed liquor licence would see the mess hall operated like a private club and serve liquor from 11 a.m. to midnight Sundays through Thursdays and 11 a.m. to 2

a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. Toews said he was “somewhat taken aback” to hear liquor would be served that early in the day, but said he then learned the hours are simply those identified under the terms of the licence to be provided

by the liquor board. Toews said it’s his understanding there are “standing orders” to restrict opening the RCMP mess hall in Surrey for liquor service to later on in the day. “I believe it’s 3:30 p.m. or 4 o’clock,” he said. Meanwhile, Toews said the new RCMP accountability act will create a “single, seamless and comprehensive” process for dealing with sexual harassment complaints within the force. It will also establish a new framework for criminal investigations involving Mounties, and replace the Commission for Public Complaints Against the RCMP with a “modern and independent” Civilian Review and Complaints Commission for the RCMP. Toews said the act puts the onus on local RCMP commanders to make sure discipline is meted out within a reasonable deadline. “I want to make sure that an RCMP officer who is not behaving himself or herself is dealt with in a timely fashion and that there is a duty on the commander to deal with that issue in a timely fashion,” he said. “The legislation itself holds these commanders responsible so they can’t simply sweep things under the rug.”

SURREY – Pacific Commuter, a membership-based luxury coach service for Surrey and Langley residents who work in Vancouver, hits the roads today. The service will run Monday to Friday and will initially cater to those who work typical nine-to-five hours. Each morning, members will be picked up from locations in Surrey and Langley. Once downtown, there are multiple dropoff points, including Waterfront Station, Coal Harbour and the Sheraton Wall Centre. Each bus has a long list of amenities, such as plush reclining seats, and a kitchen for those who struggle to get their breakfast sorted first thing in the morning. “When you’re a contractor, time is money,” says Darian Kovacs, a social media consultant. “The fact that I can work on my way to work alone makes the cost of membership worth its weight in gold.” The cost starts at $395 a month. For more information, see pacificcommuter.com.

Mounties mingling on promenade this summer Amy Reid

Now staff twitter@amyreid87

WHITE ROCK – Keep your eyes peeled for Mounties in red serge on the White Rock promenade throughout the summer. Officers will be out in their full uniforms on select dates, chatting with the residents and tourists and even posing for photos. “In my opinion, it’s quite impressive,” White Rock Const. Janelle Shoihet said of

the red serge get up. White Rock RCMP used to hit the town in full dress about 15 years ago, but the initiative went to the wayside until being brought back to life two summers ago. This year marks the third summer the program has been back, and it’s popular, Shoihet said. “We had people come to us – especially tourists, because we are a tourist town – asking where they can find them. This

gives people the opportunity to know when and where we can be found.” While the main point of the Mounties on the promenade is to interact with the public, they will still have their eyes peeled for any laws being broken. “We try not to run after bad guys too much in our boots, they’re quite heavy,” Shoihet said with a chuckle. “But we will absolutely enforce liquor regulations, speed enforcement and

anything else we happen to see.” The Mounties can be found along the White Rock promenade between the 14400block and 15600-block of Marine Drive, weather permitting. On Canada Day, two Mounties were scheduled to be on the promenade from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., and one Mountie will be around from noon to 3 p.m. on July 15, Aug. 6 and Aug 19.

B.C. politics

List of Liberal ship-jumpers should be long InTheHouse Keith Baldrey

S

o B.C. Liberal MLA Kevin Krueger is packing it in (well, eventually) and is taking his boombox voice out of the legislature for good come the next election. But he won’t be the only high-profile MLA to call it quits by then, and announce he or she won’t be running in the next election. As the re-election prospects for the B.C. Liberal government look increasingly dim, expect a number of others to opt out of running for what may likely be a seat in Opposition. I suspect any veterans of a provincial government cabinet would dread the idea of sitting in Opposition, of going from wielding genuine political power to having none. The ministers on most observers’ most-likely-togo lists include Finance Minister Kevin Falcon, Education Minister George Abbott and Energy Minister Rich Coleman. All are veterans, all have been in cabinet a long time, and they surely must dread the

idea of sitting across from a government, rather than being part of it. Falcon also has a very young family, which must be a huge factor as he weighs his political future. Rumours abound that Coleman is fishing for a seat in the federal Senate. Abbott will have served more than 15 years as an MLA by the time the next election rolls around. Many have speculated that Falcon may leave politics for a few years, only to return down the road to lead a new free enterprise coalition party that emerges from the rubble that may be the B.C. Liberal party after the May 2013 election. If people like Falcon, Abbott and Coleman do indeed throw in the towel, it will present an interesting challenge for Premier Christy Clark. Traditionally, a premier will remove from cabinet any minister who isn’t seeking re-election. However, I don’t think she can afford to lose ministers of this stature. Falcon will most assuredly remain as finance minister, to allow him to bring in the important pre-election budget. Coleman has a lot of responsibilities (including being house leader) and it’s hard to see anyone from the

backbench filling his shoes, while Abbott’s steady hand is needed in cabinet. Other B.C. Liberals who may be rethinking their political futures likely include current Children and Families Minister Mary McNeil, former cabinet ministers Colin Hansen, Randy Hawes, Moira Stilwell, Kash Heed, Bill Barisoff, and Murray Coell (MLA Harry Bloy has already announced he won’t be seeking re-election). If departures of this scale do indeed occur, it may allow Clark to argue her party has changed significantly from the Gordon Campbell era, but I suspect it will be difficult for her to attract a lot of high quality replacement candidates (again, who wants to sit in Opposition?) The pending departures on the NDP side are a

smaller group: Michael Sather, Dawn Black and perhaps Gary Coons and Diane Thorne. When we get an official count of those not seeking re-election, it will likely be reflective of the directions the two parties seem to be heading. One looks like it’s headed for government; the other for electoral disaster. If the polls are accurate and don’t change much, the number of B.C. Liberals leaving should be about three times that of New Democrats not seeking re-election.

the BCTF had been looking for a 15 per cent wage increase, and the employer was seeking a fair number of concessions from the teachers at the negotiating table. Here’s what I wrote in this space last December, more than a half year ago, as I suggested how a deal could be struck: “Now, there is absolutely no hope of the BCTF achieving anything even remotely similar to what it is demanding when it comes to financial

TOLD YOU SO...

A number of observers have wondered if the tentative agreement between the B.C. Teachers’ Federation and their employer could have been reached well before now. Remember, for months

compensation….but what if the BCTF dropped its wage demands and said, in return, get rid of the concessions?” Well, that’s precisely what happened, and what it took to get a deal in the end. The BCTF agreed to a zero per cent wage hike, and the employer dropped the concessions. I hate to say I told you so, but…. Employment insurance

Conservative details devilish ViewPoint Bob Groeneveld

H

ere’s something you won’t hear from me very often – maybe even never again: I agree with the Harper Conservatives. Well… sort of. The devil will be in the details, of course. “Unemployment Insurance” was started in Canada as part of the federal social network built by right-wing governments – mostly right-of-centre Liberals – to stave off a political spiral into the dark dankness of socialism as represented first by the CCF and later by the NDP (the red hordes that actually first came up with ideas like helping laid-off workers, universal health care… you know, all that heathen socialist stuff that good Canadians hate so much that no government, no matter how right-wing, dares to get rid of it). U.I., as it was known until the mid-1990s when the name was changed to the more descriptive E.I. (Employment Insurance) was initially a way to help out people who had lost their jobs, to tide them over until they found new jobs. Over the years, it changed. And I don’t just mean the 1990s name change. U.I./E.I slowly morphed into two very separate functions. It continued in its original role, helping hard-up workers through

a tough time. Indeed, in that role, the U.I./E.I service improved over the years, not only doling out cheques for those who were between jobs, but including and developing programs – some of which blew in and blew out again on the changing political winds – that were aimed (with varying degrees of success) at helping find jobs, or even offering retraining for those whose occupations or careers were evaporated by changing times and technologies.

Over the years, it changed. And I don’t just mean the 1990s name change. But U.I./E.I. also took on an entirely different role – one that never really fit either the “between jobs” or the “insurance” aspects initially built into the system. Changes in benefit criteria turned U.I./E.I. into a mainstay supplemental income for seasonal workers – fishing and lumber industries come immediately to mind – who aren’t really “between jobs” when the fish aren’t running or the woods are closed in mid-winter and late summer. In fact they are only waiting for the next fishing season to open, for the snow and ice to come off the trees, for the fire hazard to subside. And since the seasonal lay-offs are entirely predictable, it’s not

really “insurance” they’re looking for, but a basic income supplement – or better pay while they’re working, kind of like teachers get 12 months worth of pay over their 10-month period of work. In any case, seasonal pay-outs of income supplements should be structured separately from bona fide E.I., with a separate source fund – which could be paid into specially by employers who routinely rely on seasonal employees. So while I agree with most of the E.I. changes proposed by the Harper Conservatives, in some respects, I don’t think they’re going far enough. That said, I’m waiting with bated breath to see some of their definitions of “appropriately acceptable” employment changes that the unemployed must accept in order to maintain benefits. It’s those devilish details. And stupid comments like, “Any job is better than no job,” don’t inspire confidence. On the other hand, maybe sending a 63-year-old office worker out to pick strawberries is not a bad idea, from a Conservative, money-saving perspective – killing a few of them off might help assuage our pension problems. But Harper needs to be careful that his plan doesn’t backfire: the physical exercise could make some of those long-in-the-tooth workers healthier, allowing them to live – and collect pensions – longer. Traveller’s compassion should inspire us to care The Editor, A couple months ago, I witnessed a true act of kindness while travelling on SkyTrain. A man wearing a ripped tank top and sporting a bleeding lip boarded the SkyTrain during a downpour. Most people did not give him a second glance. Transit police asked him a few questions: why his lip was bleeding – he had gotten into a fight – and if he was under the influence. This received a couple of looks. A man sitting across the aisle though did something the rest of us failed to do – he showed compassion for the bleeding man. He first offered him bandages, for which the bleeding man was incredibly grateful. Then he did something that really touched me. He took off his expensive-looking jacket and gave it to the man. The reason I share this story is to remind people to take a few minutes out of their busy lives and be thankful for all that they have and, by reflecting on that, offer kindness to those who aren’t as fortunate as us. We are lucky that life hasn’t given us the contexts that may result in such a situation. In situations such as this, most of us turn the other way – we crank up the music we’re listening to, throw ourselves deeper into our thoughts or develop a sudden interest in the scenic view outside. Acts of kindness such as this, as far as I have seen, are rare. In the game of life, all we have is each other. A. Grewal, Surrey

Suites solution The Editor, Enough has been said about basement suites already. If the city is not enforcing bylaws, this is an issue. If, as your readers say, there must be at least 30,000 extra suites in Surrey, that means the city has the potential to collect $12 million every year without increasing anyone’s property tax (base rate). If the city decides to do nothing about this, shame on it. This is what must be brought to light every time the taxpayers attend the meetings and we must hold our elected officials to account. That extra $12 million could pay for repair to roads desperately in need, extra garbage services or water treatment facilities. Yes, by all means, report the owners of the basement suites to the authorities, but isn’t that redundant? For a homeowner to do any kind of construction to the home, he needs a permit from the city, so the city should already know where these suites exist. If anyone is caught building without a permit, he is stopped and there is a big notice on the front to prevent further construction to the place; the owner/contractor is also fined. So the suites that are finally constructed are all legal, with the knowledge of the city, and meet all regulatory standards. I have lived in many suites and never did I find anything unsafe or insecure from a construction point of view. M. Hajee, Surrey

Gina Kuvinka, for example, chose to paint the train station that features in many of her fondest memories of her husband. Last Tuesday she had done the painstaking work of getting the proportions and angles of the building just so, and was beginning to block in the colour. SEE VIDEO ONLINE “I never painted in my life,” she said with a chuckle. “I’m trying, it works,” she said of Payne’s approach. Painting is “good for your brain.” That kind of a comment was echoed by others, that learning to paint helped each of them to look with more attention, to notice things like clouds in the sky, and shades of colour too. Josie Boychuk, who takes the class with

prefers doing watercolours. She summed up the sentiment of the group when she said, “I’m determined I’m going to do this to the best of my ability.” Payne, obviously proud of her enthusiastic students, said some of their finished paintings could go up against professional artists’ work. A prolific artist herself, Payne also teaches students of all ages, in groups or private sessions. The painters from the retirement home will have their work exhibited on Aug. 16, along with professional artists who may offer some pieces for sale. Entry deadline for Art in the Secret Garden is July 25. It will be held at Crescent Gardens Retirement Community, at 1222 King George Blvd., next to the Pacific Inn. For some, like Rudy Serfas, it’s taken a bit of time to warm up to painting. “I’m getting to like it more and more all the time,” he said, adding that he now likes his painting of an inukshuk more than the photo from which he was working. Ursula Graham said she has found she prefers sketching to painting, and has begun collecting books to help her with the technical aspects of shading in order to improve her work. She, like others, has begun painting on her own outside of class. Jean Sarginson, who was working on an ambitious garden scene, said she generally

SURREY – An upcoming art show will feature emerging local painters alongside established artists. The new artists expressed surprise at being included, considering the most experienced among them has only been painting for about six months. None had expected to be doing this at their age, they said. The group of eight are residents at Crescent Gardens Retirement Community in South Surrey, and have been learning how to paint in Tuesday classes taught by Angie Payne. “I’ve always believed there was talent in the retirement homes,” said Payne. “Whether they’re six or 66, I believe I can bring that out of them. I always get a product.” And Payne said she also believes her students need to market their work and share it with the public. The exhibit, called Art in the Secret Garden, is slated for Thursday, Aug. 16 at Crescent Garden’s outdoor courtyard. The evening event, from 7 to 9 p.m., will feature wine and cheese, and live music, while visitors explore the artworks. The call is open to artists of various media, even though the students at the home tend to work mostly in acrylics. Joyce Campbell, who was putting the finishing touches on a painting of a puppy, said she gets completely absorbed in her work. “It’s very therapeutic,” she said. “It’s just relaxing, comforting.” Campbell, like many others in the class, said she was surprised to discover her own ability. Payne described her approach to teaching as being very strict about things like perspective, but very open about colour choice. Everyone starts out with a colour wheel, she said, and then they explore on their own, with direction on technique or

Summer has arrived and that means a new Concerts in the Park series is about to get started. The Delta Music Makers will kick off the free outdoor series with a performance at Memorial Park in Ladner tonight (Tuesday). The band has a variety of movie themes, Broadway musical tunes and folk music, as well as solo features, in store for concert-goers. A few specific numbers will include “I Believe” (the theme from the Vancouver Winter Olympics), “76 Trombones” (from The Music Man), a medley of Mancini’s best-known works and “Mountain Dance,” a medley of mountain folk tunes from the Appalachians, notes Music Makers founder and music director Curt Jantzen. The group, which is marking its 30th anniversary, has been involved with the Concerts in the Park series for 25 years. Jantzen says the series is always well organized and there is a pretty good turnout, depending on the weather. The Flanagans will be making their Concerts in the Park debut at Social Heart Plaza in North Delta on July 10 and will make a second appearance at Memorial Park on July 31.

The band, comprising Michelle Carlisle (vocals, flute, piccolo, Irish whistle, fife, piano) and Brian Flanagan (vocals, guitar) plays Canadian folk, East coast/Maritime and contemporary music. The North Delta-based duo has been performing together since 1991, notes Carlisle. The Concerts in the Park series is presented by Delta Parks Recreation and Culture. Shows are cancelled in inclement weather. Those attending are advised to bring their own blanket or lawn chair. For more on the series, visit www.corp. delta.bc.ca or call 604-946-3306.

Saving furniture from the landfill, with style in mind Operators of family-run upholstery shop in Surrey have seen the industry evolve considerably over the past two decades Tom Zillich

Brett Wickens works on a chair at the Surrey Upholstery shop in Newton. This year, tangerine is a hot colour for upholstery projects. (Photo: KEVIN HILL) When sofas, chairs and other pieces of furniture become old and ragged, most people are inclined to toss the item in the trash and buy new — a relatively quick and easy solution, for sure, but not always the

smart one. First, there are environmental concerns with throwing that not-so-comfy couch in the dumpster. Second, if the furniture is beloved, it can be saved and made to look new again.

Several weeks ago, a young couple brought an old sofa to Surrey Upholstery for some needed repair work. It was a colonial style piece of furniture, all floral and with a frilly skirt and wooden arms. “It was so ugly but they really loved it,” recalled a smiling Sonya Burton, who owns and operates the Newton upholstery shop. “It cost them around $2,500, but we took the skirt off, put on some cool legs, changed the back, made the wood nice and dark and put some good fabric on it, and it’ll last them 30 years. Something like that makes me so happy — young people doing that. They had to make payments to make it happen, but they are just ecstatic with the results.”

“Getting something reupholstered is not the cheap way to go, because it’s custom work, hands-on,” a candid Burton told the Now. “I mean, you can go to The Brick and buy something cheaper. Like this sofa and two chairs,” she said, pointing to a finished project in the upholstery shop, “is probably around $4,000 to do, which is cheaper than going to Jordans or Ethan Allen (furniture stores) — we’re probably in between those places and Brick. You have to like the furniture to get it reupholstered. If the person likes it and wants to keep it, they come to us.” Burton has seen the world of upholstery evolve considerably during her 26 years in the business. When she first started out, having something reupholstered was cheaper than buying new, but that’s no longer the case, typically. Not coincidentally, the number of upholstery shops in Surrey has declined from around 20 in the early1990s to four or five today, she estimates. “The whole industry has changed,” she said. “When they retire, a lot of the older European men just close shop, because the younger generation doesn’t want to get involved in it. Surrey Upholstery

‘Mirror Mirror’: Call made for exhibit of self-portraits

You get a roll of fabric, it’s all cut up and then sewn and pieced together and something is created…. To see it (furniture) transformed and have it make the owner smile and appreciate it again, that’s exciting.

the one at Kwantlen (university), it was cancelled because not that many kids want to learn the craft. It takes a long time to properly learn how to do this (upholstery work). When I started, I was picking staples for two years, and then I worked on dining chairs and then sofas and bigger pieces, then cutting and sewing and then I got into courses on colour and design. It’s not a one-year course to learn all that.” A typical chair costs around $300 to reupholster, Burton said. At Surrey Upholstery, the work is all done by hand, and everyone at the shop takes a turn. Angela Browning strips nails out, Margaret Wu cuts and sews fabric, and then Browning preps foam. The stapling and finishing work is done by Brett Wickens. Burton’s father, Richard, operated Surrey Upholstery until his retirement

a dozen years ago (he has since died). The shop, positioned in the same complex as Hook and Ladder Pub, remains a family-run business. “My cousin Julie (Gilmore) works here, and her dad was an upholsterer,” Burton said, “and my husband worked here and so did my sister’s husband — that’s how we met our husbands. We figured if dad hired them, they must be OK.” Today, Burton’s job is to visit homes and businesses to look at furniture, show samples and give price quotes for upholstery work. Of course, it’s easier for her to go to the client — to places in West Van, even Whistler — rather than have the client bring in the piece of furniture. Thankfully, photos sent from iPhones and other devices can speed up the consultation process. As for current trends, a hot colour this year is tangerine, Burton said. Furniture done with big, bold

patterns and French script is in style, too, and Burton recently attended a design show in Vancouver where it was suggested the peaches and greens of 20-plus years ago are slowly coming back. Whatever the colour or design, Burton loves seeing the transformation of furniture through upholstery work. “You get a roll of fabric, it’s all cut up and then sewn and pieced together and something is created,” she said. “The before and after pictures are just so fun and satisfying. Like this green chair here, the guy really likes it and it’s comfortable, I guess, but most people would just throw that in the garbage. So to see it transformed and have it make the owner smile and appreciate it again, that’s exciting.” The shop, online at www. surreyupholstery.com, is located at 8567 132nd St., Surrey.

Olympic weightlifting

Beijing results propel lifter to London Michael Booth

Now staff twitter@boothnow

A handcrafted gym attached to a modest White Rock bungalow is not where you would expect to find world-class athletic talent. But those Spartan surroundings are the forge in which Christine Gerrard aspires to turn massive round slabs of iron into smaller discs of gold, silver and bronze. Born and raised in Quebec, Gerrard arrived in White Rock three years ago with her RCMP officer fiancé. Her first order of business as a homemaker was to turn the garage into a workspace where she could continue her quest to become Canada’s most decorated female weightlifter. “I work out in there all the time. It’s a bit small and I have to move things around,” she said, before adding with a giggle: “I actually broke the floor. I pulled up the mats and the floor was all cracked.” At 27, Gerrard is one of the top female weightlifters on the planet. She holds the Canadian records for the 63-kilogram weight class for the snatch (106kgs), cleanand-jerk (134kgs) and combined (238kgs). She also possesses the records for the Pan-American Games and Commonwealth Games as well. Last month at the Canadian Championships near Montreal, Gerrard finished first in her category with a combined total of 233kgs after lifting 103kgs in the snatch and 130kgs in the clean and jerk. First place might please some competitors but for an elite athlete like Gerrard, the Montreal results were disappointing. “I didn’t do what I wanted to do,” she said. “I only made two attempts out of six - one in the clean-and-jerk and one in the snatch. Obviously that means I missed four out of six so I’m not happy with that. It wasn’t the best day for me but I still managed to finish first overall so that was good. My main goal though was to beat my best and I didn’t do that so that wasn’t

good.” While her numbers disappointed her, the results clinched a spot for Gerrard on the Canadian team that will compete at the 2012 Olympic Games in London this summer. That’s when countless hours spent toiling in the tiny makeshift garage/ gym will finally pay off. Four years ago, Gerrard experienced her first taste of Olympic fever at the 2008 Games in Beijing. She was amazed at the atmosphere at the event and narrowly missed a medal by three kilograms, finishing fourth overall.

I actually broke the floor. I pulled up the mats and the floor was all cracked. She returned to Canada determined to work even harder to make her goal of an Olympic medal become a reality. “It does drive me because even though I missed the podium, it proved that my dream of winning a medal was realistic,” she said. “Weightlifting for women is still new at the Olympics so all the time I was growing up, I dreamed of winning a medal but I knew it was impossible. Then I got to compete in Beijing and I finished fourth so I knew my dream was not impossible. I was so close and that has obviously driven me for the past four years to get better. I have no regrets for how I did in Beijing because I feel I did everything I could that day. I was ranked seventh and I finished fourth so I gained three ranking spots which was great. “Instead of worrying about missing a medal by three kilos, I concentrate on all the things I did right. If I do more of those things, I’ll be even better in London. There is a quote that says: the more I work, the luckier I get. Hopefully that will be true.” Gerrard’s hard work is paying off. She blew away her personal best numbers for

SPORTS Olympic weightlifting

Mental preparation key to Gerrard’s medal chances all aspects of weightlifting competition, far exceeding the 226 combined kilos she lifted for fourth place in Beijing. Last November in Paris, Gerrard finished seventh overall in the prestigious Group A (top 10 lifters in the world) with a combined total of 238kgs. That result is impressive considering the worlds have far more entries and much laxer drug testing standards than will be in place at the London Olympics. “Paris was a really good experience for me because I was in the Group A,” she said. “I was really competitive and that is what I wanted. I also was able to compete with the best Chinese (lifter). “I beat her in the clean-and-jerk, which was really amazing because the Chinese are always winning.” Weightlifting may be all about the numbers, but for Gerrard, it’s her improved mental approach that will make or break her Olympic experience in London. She admits that she was somewhat overwhelmed by all of the Olympic hoopla

“My mental preparation is different now and that’s for two reasons,” she said. “The first thing is that I have been to the Olympics already and know what to expect now. I saw what it was like in Beijing and I’m sure that in London it won’t be smaller. The second thing is I am now four years older. I am more involved in my coaching and my progression so I understand things better. “My mental preparation will definitely be better than it was four years ago. Mermaid tale

They’re real all right – and thanks to Surrey mom, the proof is in the pool

Mermaid tails made by Monika Naumann of Surrey are modelled by, from left, Maleka Rostami, Julia Naumann, Allison Meyer, Megan Naumann and Lani Carbonel.

for mermaids. They had watched all the mermaid movies, and Kristy had drawn countless mermaid pictures. Three years ago, Megan, who was 12 at the time, was online looking for mermaid tails to buy.
