A nightclub vibe will be brought to Surrey Art Gallery Saturday night during “InFlux,” an event that helps launch this year’s version of the HSBC City of Bhangra Festival. The ninth annual festival is staged at venues in Surrey and Vancouver from May 30 to June 8. Saturday’s VIBC “Media Arts Mehfil” in Surrey is designed for young adults, with music, dance and visual arts in multiple rooms of the gallery, at Bear Creek Park. Admission is a minimum $5 donation. “It’s a fun environment, a very social event,” said Jordan Strom, gallery curator. A first “InFlux” event was held at the gallery last November. Shava, a bhangra group from Finland, will perform at “InFlux,” along with Mohamed Assani, DJ ASlam, Sammy Chien, Tad Hozumi, Rup Sidhu and others. The term mehfil refers to an evening of entertainment in an intimate setting. The
gallery event offers a twist, with new collaborations emphasizing improvisation and a sense of play. The event is presented as part of the gallery’s current art exhibit, Spectacular Sangeet, which is on view until June 16. The festival is designed to “celebrate the music and dance of bhangra in all its variations, with its potential to attract disparate communities and shatter barriers between people,” according to organizers. This year, the festival’s popular “rePercussion” event will be staged in both Vancouver and Surrey (on June 6 at Surrey Arts Centre). Here, Vancouver Community College’s Sal Ferreras leads a percussion mash-up that fuses South Asian, Brazilian and First Nation rhythms, among others.
