‘It’s a Girl’ in Surrey Tom Zillich Now staff Twitter @tomzillich

Three of the most deadly words in parts of the world today are “It’s a girl” – title of a new documentary film that explores socalled gendercide in India and China. In those and other countries around the globe, many baby girls are killed, aborted or abandoned simply because they are female. This “war against girls” is revealed in Evan Grae Davis’ Deesh Sekhon documentary movie, which has been on tour since September. In Surrey on Wednesday, Jan. 30, It’s a Girl will be shown at the Newton campus of Kwantlen Polytechnic University, in an awareness campaign event hosted by GirlKIND Foundation (www.girlkind.org). “Every screening we have held, audience members have left feeling shocked,

informed and inspired,” Deesh Sekhon, the organization’s executive director, told the Now. “People have said to me over and over that more people need to see the film, so that is what we are doing.” The film offers captivating stories from women of different social-economic backgrounds who talk about why they choose to kill their baby girls and how some are trying to save their daughters. The filmmaker also interviews activists on the front lines. “The film is done well with compelling stories, smart graphics and statistics,” noted Sekhon, who grew up in Surrey before moving to Abbotsford a couple years ago. “It gives individuals a very good understanding of what gendercide is and why it is happening. It is occurring all over the world, but this film deals with the issue of why it is happening in India and China, both for different reasons.” The event in Surrey will also include a performance by Saint Soldier and guest speakers.
