SURREY – The murder suspect who police shot dead last week in Maple Ridge had a Surrey group home, a restaurant, a gym, a school and an individual on his hit list. A White Rock security business was also on the list. “There was the potential for an extremely high number of fatalities,” said Sgt. Jennifer Pound, spokeswoman for the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team. “We are currently speaking with all businesses and individuals that were targets on the list and attempting to determine what, if any, conflict existed.” Names were not released by press time. “Not until we can have some time to look into it further,” Pound said. Angus David Mitchell, who had worked as a security guard, died in a shoot-out with police on a rural road in Maple Ridge last Wednesday. The list of targets was found in his van. killing two people in a Burnaby Sushi restaurant on May 27 and then shooting his former landlord in Burnaby two days later. She survived. Insp. Kevin Hackett, the officer in charge of IHIT, said it appears Mitchell spent some time gathering information on his targets and planning escape routes from places where he intended to kill them. “Investigators are continuing to search for a motive but we are not confident we will find one that would make any sense,” Hackett said. “Of one thing we are certain – had he not been located when he was, the potential for additional loss of life was extreme.” Those killed at the Sushi restaurant were single mom Chinh (Vivian) Diem Huynh, 34, and Huong (Andy) Tran, 36, of Burnaby. Huynh was on Mitchell’s list; Tran was not. “The sushi restaurant and his former landlord were only the first from those lists,” Hackett said. tzytaruk@thenownewspaper.com
