Boarders plucked from Suicide Gully

James Weldon jweldon@nsnews.com

TWO teens were left shaken but safe Wednesday after they were plucked from a ravine where a nearly identical rescue took place three weeks ago.

SARAH Newton (left), Olivia Poon, Katie Fournell as Tina, Becky Oben and Lena Dabrusin perform in Tina and Ted, An Environmentally Friendly Fairy Tale. The puppet show, presented by North Shore Theatre For Children, runs Feb. 25-27 and April 7 and 30 at Presentation House Theatre in North Vancouver and March 6, 23 and 24 at Kay Meek Theatre in West Vancouver. The show is aimed at an audiences aged three to eight.

The victims were snowboarding on North Vancouver’s Mount Seymour at about midday when they apparently ducked under a boundary rope and descended into a famously dangerous piece of terrain called Suicide Gully. The pair soon found themselves trapped at the top of a waterfall, unable to climb back up the precipitous slope above them. Friends of the victims, also on the mountain and worried by their companions’ long absence, alerted the Mount Seymour ski patrol. The patrollers passed the call along to members of North Shore Rescue. The team, in Lynn Canyon Park at the time looking for a missing man, got in touch with the trapped teens briefly by phone and then dispatched a helicopter to the area. The snowboarders were extracted by long line and flown back to safety. “They were cold, wet and freaked out” but otherwise unharmed, said North Shore Rescue team leader Tim Jones. Top cop reviews Mountie’s discipline

Jane Seyd jseyd@nsnews.com

RCMP Assistant Commissioner Craig Callens has said he will review the written decision of an RCMP disciplinary board that punished Staff. Sgt. Travis Pearson by docking his pay 10 days for having sex in his police cruiser.

Callens, commanding officer for the B.C. RCMP, issued a statement following the disciplinary decision Feb. 9 against Pearson, an RCMP officer who at one time was in charge of professional standards at the North Vancouver detachment. In December, Pearson admitted to being guilty of disgraceful

conduct for having on-the-job sex in his police car with Const. Susan Gastaldo, a female officer who was working as his subordinate in a special surveillance unit in Burnaby. Pearson also admitted to using his RCMP Blackberry to send numerous sexual text messages to Gastaldo. But Pearson vehemently denied other allegations levelled at him during the disciplinary hearing, including complaints by Gastaldo that Pearson sexually harassed her and forced her into the relationship.

The board decided that Gastaldo had not been forced and that the affair was consensual. Pearson also denied accusations of sexual harassment made by a civilian employee of the North Vancouver RCMP, who told the tribunal that Pearson stalked her and forced her into a sexual relationship while the two worked together at the North Vancouver detachment. In making its decision, the tribunal made it clear it was not considering the evidence of that witness, who testified under subpoena as part of Gastaldo’s defence. It also did not deal with other allegations that Pearson lied to superiors about the affair with Gastaldo. See Callens page 5

Man linked to teen’s disappearance arrested for bail breach

Jane Seyd jseyd@nsnews.com

A former Bowen Island man who has long been a “person of interest” in the disappearance of a Squamish teen has been arrested for allegedly breaching his bail conditions in an unrelated case. Gavin Arnott, 23, was arrested on Vancouver Island last week for allegedly breaching bail conditions in a case involving a 14-year-old girl. He faces charges of sexual interference and child pornography in that case for allegedly keeping sexually explicit photos of the girl. Arnott is currently in custody pending his next court appearance Feb. 24.

Arnott also remains a person of interest in the disappearance of his ex-girlfriend, Jodi Henrickson, according to Bowen Island RCMP. Henrickson went missing on June 20, 2009, when she was 17, after attending a house party on the island. She was last seen with Arnott on Miller Road, between 6 and 7 a.m. Police believe she is dead, although her body has never been found. Just two months ago, the RCMP blanketed the Sea-to-Sky corridor and local ferry routes with a poster about the missing teen, hoping to jog memories and get witnesses to come forward. The poster campaign did generate some new tips, said Sgt. Jennifer Pound, spokesperson for the Integrated Homicide Investigation team. So far police aren’t saying more about the ongoing investigation.

AN ethics study of 30 police agencies across the country — including the RCMP and West Vancouver Police Department — has found half of the officers responding were unsure if their colleagues would report an ethical breach. Most also felt the discipline handed out for unethical behaviour would be less severe than it should be. Those were two of the findings of a national survey on police ethics conducted by Carleton University and released Tuesday in the Lower Mainland by the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police. Among the 10,000 officers who took part in the online survey, most felt their colleagues and supervisors demonstrated a high level of ethical behaviour. But in questions depicting five scenarios — ranging from sharing confidential data with a former colleague who sells the information, to being lenient with a fellow officer involved in a domestic assault — more than half said they weren’t sure if their colleagues would report the incident. Two-thirds of the officers said they would report such cases themselves. Supervisors were more likely to think both they and others would report an ethical breach than rank-and-file officers. Women were significantly less likely to believe their colleagues would report an ethical breach. Additionally, “in each case, respondents felt that the discipline which would likely follow from the incident was less severe than the discipline which they felt should occur,” said the study’s authors. Policewhorespondedtothe study felt their agencies have a mostly good relationship with their communities, although only 57 per cent felt police do a good job of serving “citizen groups who are our most outspoken critics.” Most thought their agencies dealt with complaints fairly and efficiently. Only a quarter gave their police agencies high marks for support, with one-third of officers responding that their agencies were not supportive of their own members. Female officers saw their agencies as less supportive than men did. The report’s authors recommended that appropriate sanctions should be handed out to all breaches of ethical standards.

Air search finds body in creek

Body suspected to be that of man who went missing 10 days ago James Weldon

jweldon@nsnews.com

POLICE are trying to identify a body pulled from North Vancouver’s Lynn Creek Thursday morning.

Investigators have said the victim may be a man who went missing 10 days ago. Jim Parent, 54, was last seen at his residence in the 4000block of Lynn Valley Road Feb. 5. Last week, with no leads to go on, the North Vancouver RCMP issued a release requesting any further information

from the public. On Tuesday, they got a tip suggesting he may have walked into Lynn Canyon Park on the day of his disappearance. Police got in touch with North Shore Rescue, who launched a search. The volunteer team spent much of Wednesday scouring the park’s trails by foot, searching the creek in kayaks and surveying the area by air. When a member found a piece of clothing in the waterway, the team focused its efforts there, and soon a helicopter spotted the body submerged in a pool at the top of Twin Falls. An RCMP dive team retrieved the remains Thursday morning, and they were flown out of the park for examination. Police say they will be issuing an update when they have determined the victim’s identity and notified next of kin. Check back here for more. Follow us on Twitter: @NorthShoreNews

Suspected burglar leaves large clue

Jane Seyd jseyd@nsnews.com

AN alert jogger, who put two and two together when he noticed a ladder under his neighbour’s window, is being credited with catching a thief who police say may be responsible for several breakand-enters throughout the Lower Mainland. Police said a West Vancouver man was out for a run in the 6600-block of Marine Drive around 5 p.m. on Tuesday when he noticed a

ladder under his neighbour’s window. The man also noted a suspicious vehicle parked nearby and reported the licence plate number and relevant information to the West Vancouver police. Officers arrived a short time later and confirmed a break and enter had occurred at the home. They tracked down the vehicle, a 2001 Nissan Maxima, and after a brief investigation arrested the man inside. Police believe property they recovered in the bust is linked to crimes in other areas of the Lower Mainland. Paul Smith, 36, of North Vancouver, has been charges with break and enter and breach of recognizance.

Out-of-bounds a bad idea from page 1 was extracted from the same gully Jan. 26 when he rode into the area and got stranded on a 40-storey cliff. He also had to be flown out by helicopter. The incidents illustrate yet again that heading out of bounds is a bad plan, said Jones.

Callens: 1-year time limit prevents additional action from page 1

In a statement issued on the result of the disciplinary hearing, Callens said he was “not able to make an informed comment with respect to why the appropriate officer of the day proceeded with a single allegation in this case.” Callens added, “In this particular case, whether I wanted to or not, there was no option for me as the new commanding officer to add to the allegation of the disgraceful conduct heard in this matter, due to the one-year limitation period.” Callens said in his statement he is reviewing active RCMP disciplinary files “to determine if the allegations and sanctions being sought are consistent with my view and expectations regarding member conduct and discipline. “Going forward, I have been clear that accountability is my top priority.” Gastaldo, who will learn her fate from the disciplinary board later this month, is still suing the RCMP in civil court. New pornography I

T’S difficult to understand where the Conservative Party stands on issues of individual rights and freedoms. Old-guard Reformers previously favoured smaller government and less regulation. From that perspective, the move to end the long-gun registration program is understandable. The government’s move to end mandatory completion of the long-form census could — charitably — be explained in the same context. It’s hard to square those Tory stances on individual freedom with Bill C-30, introduced this week in Parliament. If passed in its present form, Internet service providers would be required to give police the power and the means to collect information on any Internet user without a warrant. Public Safety Minister Vic Toews has

said a warrant would still be required to follow a user on the Net, although the language of the present bill leaves that interpretation open to doubt. Bill C-30 has been dubbed the Protecting Children From Internet Predators Act. But Canadian police have caught many child pornographers with the law as it stands and the co-operation of Internet service providers. The providers say they have no problem in assisting police in these cases. So where exactly is the demonstrated need for this bill and its heavy-handed language? Lest anyone missed the point, Toews said if you don’t support the bill, you support the child pornographers. That’s Orwellian logic: demonizing a democratic opponent and leaving no room for debate on the issue. Where is the respect for individual freedom in that?

Get a return ticket for these bus shelters

I’M reluctant to speak ill of the politically departed, but the gatekeeper who waved in Jimmy Pattison’s widely disliked “bus shelters” in West Vancouver was Pamela Goldsmith-Jones. The buck stops there — on the mayor’s desk. She was mayor. She was CEO. She set the agenda. It’s a myth that a mayor is just another councillor. The ersatz “shelters” in fact are mini-billboards — and thenmayor Mark Sager lowered the boom on billboards of any size in West Vancouver in the 1990s. Mayors Pat Boname and Ron Wood evidently saw no reason to scrap the prohibition. It would have been fascinating to be the gadfly on the wall if and when Goldsmith-Jones and Sager — who ironically now takes a make-the-best-of-it stance, proposing displays of West Vancouver art on some shelters — discussed the issue after the latter’s closed-door council session unanimously approved the Pattison pitch last May.

This Just In

Trevor Lautens From the start the decision was tainted — disgracefully tainted, in my view, because Goldsmith-Jones chose not to let the mere unsuspecting public in on the issue, supposedly because it involved a private company’s confidential finances and thus merited incamera consideration. Council-watcher and former councillor Carolanne Reynolds of West Vancouver Matters denounced council’s secrecy. She’s too courteous to call town hall’s rationale for the in-camera decision pure BS. But I will.

CONTACT US

Some of the “shelters” impede pedestrians and wheelchairs, obscure smallbusiness signs and entrances, block vision of oncoming buses, and finally do a lousy job of sheltering more than a few people in anything but a light, windless rain. Pattison Outdoors offered town hall the sweetener of an estimated $2 million share of its West Vancouver billboard advertising revenues over the 20-year contract. None of citizens’ business? The hell it isn’t. I phoned Jimmy offering an interview for his side of the matter, asking that the request be put directly to him. His legendary secretary, who turns aside unwelcome calls like Roberto Luongo stops pucks on his best nights, instead referred me to Rob Hunt of Pattison Outdoors. Hunt left a message saying there was nothing “more” to say. Hadn’t said anything to me. When the Downtown Eastside gets angry, militant rent-a-crowds are marshalled. Vancouver media pour in, cameras snapping. Vandalism possible. Top of the Six

O’clock News. That’s not West Vancouver’s style. We’re too “respectable.” The political and development elites know this well. If you’ve just dropped in to West Van for a cup of tea, you may not know that The Pattison Group is second — only to giant Telus — among B.C.-based top national and global companies: Revenue $7.2 billion in latest available year, 34,000 employees. Jimmy, as everyone calls him, merits highest praise for fighting unemployment — by providing real jobs, unlike the government’s “programs” and “stimulus” — and for his community work. He casts a blind eye on ideology, hiring on merit former socialist premier Glen Clark. I think highly of Jimmy. No vendetta here. But, in his own town, he’s erected those unpopular “shelters.” Any chance he’d reconsider? Nope, one businessman believes, then he’d have to do the same if Brantfordians or Calgarians or whoever didn’t like theirs. That old treacly saying that “money can’t buy everything”

happens to be true. Some things really can’t be bought. Like lost affection. For top businessmen or still-ambitious ex-mayors. ••• As Jeremy Shepherd dutifully reported in this paper Feb. 3, West Van Mayor Mike Smith hasn’t changed either his words or tune since his acclamation in November. Diplomacy isn’t Smith’s long suit. He blistered Metro Vancouver’s board for the triviality of its meetings — no business discussed, kindergarten patty-cake emails sent to the 37 members asking such profound questions as “What three guests would you invite for dinner? (Living, dead or fictional.)” (My own list: The Three Stooges.) Metro board chairman Greg Moore denied everything. He would, wouldn’t he? But words aren’t actions. A major test of Smith’s grit: How he stickhandles the spongy, PR-goosed AmblesideNOW project, unkindly called AmblesideNO! by the undersigned. •••

Personal note. Robert Plommer was the most intimidating father I ever faced in decades of dating. His lawyer’s forehead bulged with a huge, restless brain, which surely sensed that I wasn’t good enough for his meltingly attractive daughter Leslie. But was any male? Plommer, long a West Van resident, led prosecutions in big, complex cases involving Commonwealth Trust and Dr. William Jory (which Jory won, to Plommer’s anger). But his raging passion was golf. At his memorial service two weeks ago at Capilano Golf and Country Club — superbly MCed by Leslie, retiring after a career at the Globe and Mail, and the U.K.’s Times and Guardian newspapers — lawyers, friends and of course golfers joined his wife Sybil and family recounting stories about Bob. For more than three hours! Passed like a minute. And ending with son Evan leading the bereft in the only song Bob enjoyed: Spanish Eyes. He’d have loved it all. Splendid day for golf too. tlautens@telus.net

Clark may welcome union showdowns THERE wasn’t a lot to chew on from Premier Christy Clark’s fiveminute radio address this week, but she did signal a looming showdown on an issue that has the potential to right her government’s sinking ship.

Clark went on radio station CKNW’s Bill Good Show to lay out her government’s plans for the spring legislative session, and didn’t reveal anything particularly bold or new. But she seemed to go out of her way to call out public sector unions and emphasize, once again, that there was no money on the table for their members to receive wage increases anytime soon. She suggested the only way those wage hikes could occur would be through increased taxes. Clark desperately needs an issue to change the parameters of political debate in this province. her party out of office. She’s hoping public sector unions try to take her government on, allowing her to make an “us against them” type of argument. It can be an effective theme. Public support for unions has dwindled over the years (the percentage of unionized workers has steadily declined in this province). In particular, support for public sector unions is likely not very high. Public sector employees generally enjoy benefit packages that are much richer than anything found in the private sector. They also battle a misplaced public perception that they perform work of a substandard nature — the lazy civil servant stereotype.

A number of union contracts expire at the end of March, setting the stage for all kinds of strike action potentially involving nurses, health-care workers and direct government employees. The B.C. government is insisting there is no money for wage hikes, unless they are paid for by concessions from employees. The B.C. Government and Services Employee Union has already said it won’t stand for a continued wage freeze, and other unions may follow suit. Clark is no doubt hoping the NDP aligns itself with these unions if a showdown does occur. The theme of “who’s running this province” can be a game-changer, and it may allow Clark to consolidate her voter base and bring back disaffected B.C. Liberals currently parking their votes with the B.C. Conservative party. Some have suggested we could be seeing parallels with the Operation Solidarity protests that erupted in 1983 in the wake of government restraint measures. People forget, however, that despite those huge protests, the Social Credit government of the time was handily re-elected a few years later.

Any repeat of something already ruled to be libellous can be a very expensive exercise, with monetary damages being quite high. Vander Zalm opted for a jury trial, clearly betting that his personal charm and charisma could win over the hearts and minds of fellow citizens. His gamble did not work, thankfully. The seven-person jury found him guilty — and yes, that is the legal term in libel trials in this province — and his ego and reputation will suffer accordingly. And yet Vander Zalm remains unrepentant. He appeared on CKNW radio the day the verdict was reached,

Of course, the public sector unions may opt not to take the bait this time around, thus robbing Clark of a potential “wedge” issue that could clearly separate her from the New Democrats. Clark will then be forced to search around in increasingly desperate fashion to find another issue that can rebuild her party’s popularity. It won’t be an easy task. ••• As I predicted in this space some months back, former B.C. premier Bill Vander Zalm paid a hefty price for libeling former conflict-of-interest commissioner Ted Hughes in his self-published biography a few years back. Operators face city daycare space crunch

It took one longtime daycare more than a year to find a new home Benjamin Alldritt balldritt@nsnews.com

DAYCARE operators say finding a location to open in the City of North Vancouver has become extraordinarily difficult.

A delegation of daycare owners addressed city council Feb. 6 in front of a packed house of parents and children. Carolyn Peters of Park Place Daycare said she was forced to hunt for a new location when the owner of her current building, on the 900-block of Marine Drive, decided to redevelop it. “We have served the area for 16 years and we offer care from newborns to 12 years,” she said. “Families can have their children attend the same facility for all of their daycare years,” she said. “It has taken us over one year to find a new location for our 140-plus families,” she said. Finding a building of sufficient size that is seismically sound, has adequate fire safety features and outdoor play areas is hard enough, she said. Finding one that her business could afford made it even more of a struggle. Peters said paying more than $15 per square foot would mean charging more than parents can afford. Most of the locations she looked at cost more like $50 per square foot, she said. Peters also approached the North Vancouver school district, but none of their unused facilities were appropriate either, often for seismic reasons. Ultimately Park Place will have to move three kilometres away, to the 1200-block of East Keith Road. Stephanie Snider, a parent with a child at Park Place, said the loss of more than 100 daycare spaces in the neighbourhood is “a tragedy.” “There are many young families with stories much the same. This has been incredibly frustrating as a parent,” she said. Samantha Johncox and Amy Danks, operators of Sweet Peas Cottage, said their eight-space daycare, based in Danks’ home, was fully subscribed from the very beginning. With 30 families on a waitlist, Johncox and Danks are eager to move to a larger location. “Over the past two years we have explored every avenue in our quest for available space in the hopes of expanding our centre,” Johncox said.

“We have approached churches; looked at renting residential or commercial space; we have looked at buying a house. We’ve even talked to the school board about any available space they may have.” Johncox suggested the city consider its buildings to create more spaces, as well as encouraging developers to incorporate daycare in new buildings. “Childcare is not babysitting,” said Coun. Don Bell. “Unfortunately that’s an attitude held by many people. But this is early childhood development and it’s critical to development of children.” Bell, a former Liberal MP, called for a national childcare program and obliquely referenced a federal plan that was dropped following the defeat of the Paul Martin government. He also noted that some people were getting onto waiting lists even before they were pregnant in hopes of finding a spot for their child. “Municipalities are not the level of government to be funding this,” he said. “The residential tax base was never designed for this. . . . Social services like this have to be supported at the national level.” Coun. Craig Keating also said that local government simply doesn’t have the money to support childcare facilities. But, he said, there are actions the city could take beyond calling for senior government help. “For many, many years while I was on council and for many years prior, home-based daycare for up to 15 or 20 kids was an outright allowable use under our bylaws. Then we changed that and to my mind, that’s created a serious obstacle to the provision of daycare,” he said. In the spring of 2009, a divided city council introduced an array of new requirements before a daycare could open in a residential area. Anyone hoping to open a daycare for more than eight children must develop a parking and traffic mitigation plan to the satisfaction of the city engineer, canvas all of the neighbours within 100 metres for their opinion, and finally come before council to request a business licence. The bylaws were introduced in response to a long-running feud between a daycare and one of its neighbours. “I think traffic concerns and noise concerns emanating from childcares in single-family neighbourhoods quite frankly pale in comparison to the desperate need that families in North Vancouver have for childcare,” said Keating. “I’ve lost that argument before but I’m going to make it again.” Coun. Rod Clark said the 2009 bylaws “have protected our

neighbourhoods and there have been successes. Some failures, but successes as well.” On the larger issue, Clark recalled the “gut-wrenching decisions” that he and his ex-wife had faced trying to find care for their two children. “I think our society needs to rethink a lot of our focuses,” he said. “We celebrated the shipbuilding contract awarded to Seaspan — billions and billions of dollars. There’s a similar contract in Halifax for warships. Again, billions and billions of dollars. I think we need to divert some of that spending to See Mayor page 10

INQUIRING REPORTER FEBRUARY is the second year anniversary of the ban on using hand-held cellphones while driving in British Columbia. The fine for using a cellphone or hand-held electronic device while driving is $167 and three possible demerit points. All provinces in Canada have bans on using cellphones while driving, but anti-distracted driving organization Drop It And Drive says only B.C. and Ontario have bans on the use of hand-held electronic devices such as an iPod or MP3 player. Dogged determination nabs suspect

West Van police officer chases suspected shoplifter downtown James Weldon jweldon@nsnews.com

WEST Vancouver police tapped some unusual resources this week, including a citizen’s car, a dog team and the Vancouver Police Department, to track a suspected shoplifter all the way downtown.

The pursuit started just after 4:30 p.m. Thursday when the department got a call from a store at Park Royal Shopping Centre saying a man had snatched merchandise from its shelves and fled on public transit.

62

A West Vancouver traffic officer responded to the scene and tailed the bus to Georgia Street in Vancouver where he flagged it down. When the bus pulled over, the suspect hopped off and ran away. The officer followed on foot, at one point getting a ride in a citizen’s vehicle to close the gap, and called in a West Vancouver dog team and the Vancouver police to help. The 36-year-old was eventually brought down on West Hastings Street near Broughton Avenue. A search turned up a Play Station 3 video game valued at $19.99, according to police. It’s unclear if other merchandise was retrieved as well. Investigators are recommending charges of theft under $5,000 and escape from lawful custody. The man, who is known to police, has been released on a promise to appear in court. No name has been released. Follow us on Twitter: @NorthShoreNews

Mayor takes responsibility for no city hall daycare From page 9 things exactly like daycare and provision of early childhood education.” Mayor Darrell Mussatto said there was “no doubt that the province has to step up,” but said the city had to take some share of the responsibility. “We have a motion on the books that says as part of the redevelopment at city hall we have a daycare. That hasn’t happened, and I take responsibility for some of that. That’s not good enough. We have to find places.” Council unanimously passed a Keating-sponsored motion to call on the province to fund daycare, and for the city to study what else it could do to help create new spaces.

EXIT 22 STAGES AN AMERICAN CLASSIC

Salem guilt trip

■ The Crucible by Arthur Miller. An Exit 22 production directed by Stuart Aikins. Performances Feb. 17 at 8 p.m. and Feb. 18 at 2 and 8 p.m.

Rosalind Duane rduane@nsnews.com

STUART Aikins admits the characters in the new show he’s directing are all doomed. But that’s part of the drama of The Crucible, a play in which the lead character is deceitful, the townsfolk are lying hypocrites, and as Aikins suggests with a laugh, “Everybody has to die.” It has been just a few months since Aikins last directed a production at the Centre for Performing Arts at Capilano University. He staged The Hobbit there in November 2011. However, unlike that show’s protagonist, Bilbo Baggins, who eventually gives up a magical ring that may corrupt him, The Crucible’s Abigail Williams, is decidedly unredeemable. The teenager, who sparks the witchhunt at the centre of the storm in Arthur Miller’s play, is inspired by a real-life child whose “fits” set in motion events leading to what is commonly referred to as the Salem witch trials in 1692. “Abigail is not the hero in the end,” explains Aikins of the play’s main character. “She’s not a saviour in any way. She’s righteous in what she does, but she manipulates. She’s a good manipulator, but she learns that manipulation from other people en route.” Although the play is reportedly Miller’s comment on McCarthyism, Aikins says the themes are still relevant to a present-day audience. “The bottom line of it is it’s all about how anybody in a position of power

uses fear to progress their own agenda. That’s really all it is,” he says. “It’s not any different then as it is now, so that’s why it strikes me that it’s such a wonderful piece.” Since it was written in the early 1950s, The Crucible has experienced many interpretations on the stage and in film, but its familiarity is part of its appeal says Aikins. “It’s such a monumentally iconic piece,” he notes. “Who doesn’t know the story of The Crucible? And that’s the great thing about it is that you walk into those circumstances, and the audience knows that the girls are lying and that this is all about the vengeance of a child, but what you get to see is the drama that unfolds around it.” Hiding behind a fantastic façade allows the characters to be outwardly invested in their own agendas. “Because they’re protected under the guise of something as wild and as completely dramatic as witches, they don’t have to be subtle about what appears to be their intentions,” explains Aikins. The heightened drama in the play means Aikins doesn’t have to try to make the show something different than it is to appeal to an audience that has probably already heard the story. “It is already interesting, and I think that if you allow the actual script, the dialogue, to happen properly so that the audience understands everything that’s going on, then they get all these wonderful points. They see these revelations. They see what’s happening. They see how foolish these people are. There’s quite a bit of laughter in the play because you see these people behave and you realize these people are foolish,” he says, explaining the actors also have a hand in shaping the production. “When we are in North Vancouver it will be different because there is so much history for us there,” Barney Bentall says. “I lived so much of my life in North Vancouver.” Bentall formed the Bentall Taylor Ulrich (BTU) band with singer/songwriters Tom Taylor and Shari Ulrich in November of 2007 after they all played together at a Bluebird North show. “That led to us deciding to play with each other. This oneshot deal that turned into a couple little tours a year and it’s always fun when we go do it,” Bentall says. “We still maintain that songwriters’ circle element at every show.” BTU are looking forward to playing in front of family and friends at the North Vancouver venue. Not only will fans get to hear their music but also how the songs were made with stories leading into each tune. “They will get a lot of great songs and great music and probably a fair bit of humour,” Ulrich says. While they consider themselves a mix of contemporary folk and pop, each artist brings their own unique style and experiences with them to the BTU project. Ulrich was born in San Rafael, California, and at the age of 18 left the United States for Canada. One of the founding See Trio page 17

members of the legendary folk trio Pied Pumkin, she has released 19 albums over the course of her career. The B.C. Entertainment Hall of Fame inductee and Juno Award winner also performs regularly with her daughter Julia Graff and in the High Bar Gang roots band. Taylor has been recording since 1991 and is perhaps best known as the frontman for one of the North Shore’s great live party bands She Stole My Beer. As a solo artist he released the King of July album in 2005. In 1988 Bentall formed the band Legendary Hearts and that same year they released their first self-titled album. The Legendary Hearts debut sold over 100,000 copies and went on to win a Juno in 1989 for most promising group of the year. His solo career includes the albums Gift Horse in 2007 and Inside Passage in 2008. BTU selects music from their individual solo careers to perform as a trio. “We respect each others’ writing,” Bentall says. “We settle on songs that work well for

the three of us.” As veterans of the music scene they all enjoy working with each other as BTU. “When you record and do various things there is an element of tension and hard work and it can be frustrating and all sorts of emotions can be in there,” Taylor says. “Sometimes that really helps the creative process but really you want to work with people who are easy to get along with.” That sentiment is especially true when it comes to travel. “I think we have all played with great players that were just too big of a pain to travel with,” Ulrich says. The Centennial Theatre show will be the largest venue the trio has performed in as a group. “There is nothing better than playing in a soft seat theatre as far as I am concerned,” Ulrich says. “To actually come to a major theatre in the Greater Vancouver area is really important to us,” Taylor says. “I think people will really enjoy this night.”

CONTEMPORARY fashion and wearable trends are highlighted in Olsen Europe’s Spring/Summer 2012 collection. The line features seven distinct collections inspired by desirable travel destinations around the world.

Travel spots inspire spring line

THE spring and summer seasons are a great time to travel.

Inspired by desirable travel destinations, Olsen Europe recently announced seven distinct fashion collections especially for the spring and summer months. In a press release, the fashion brand noted the kick-off of its Spring/Summer 2012 collection, which showcases contemporary European design. Vibrant colours and bold prints combine with classic silhouettes for sophisticated pieces fit for work and weekend. With a nod to femininity and glamour, key trends featured in the new line include pretty embellishments, stand-out pattern and minimilist tailoring. With romantic silhouettes, retro inspiration and stand-out themes, the seven distinct looks of Olsen Europe’s Spring/Summer 2012 collection offer attractive looks for all occasions to modern women on the go.

■ Venice: Sporty, simple and relaxed, the Venice line features rich tweeds and premium denim styles that can be worn together for a casual city look. Add in a touch of the Chanel-inspired pieces and the look takes on a more vintage feel. ■ Bilbao: Styilsh garments reinterpret the architectural style of this line. Defined by clean lines, soft and flowing oversized tops, and tapered pants, this collection combines bright colours with striking prints to make a bold statement. ■ Portofino: With elegant silk fabrics, soft earth tonesm suede blends and slim trousers, this retrochic collection emphasizes femininity in floral and vintage prints. ■ New Hamptons: Inspired by the preppy style of the 1960s, this collection celebrates classic elements of American East Coast fashion like stripes, polka dot patterns and bold cherry tones. Pretty dresses, casual chinos, and structured blazers present for spring and create an upper-class college-chic look. ■ Fiji: Inspired by the coral shades of the tropics, this

collection adds versatility and fun to any wardrobe with floral and palm prints and breathable fabrics, such as linen and Tencel. ■ Copacabana: Sporty and stylish, this collection showcases casual shorts and an assortment of silk blend blouses with unique detailing. Tie-die adds finesse to this line and key pieces highlight leaf motif prints. ■ Marrakesh: Modern Africa meets sophisticated luxury in the line, which features Bohemian safari chic fashion. The theme is casual, yet flamboyant. Fierce animal patterns, canvas bags, and wood accessories offer an urban edge to this collection, which includes capris in neutral shades and ethnic print tunics. Olsen Europe clothing was first introduced in Canada in 1983, and is now sold in 66 retail locations across the country. It is available on the North Shore at the Olsen Europe Store in Park Royal, and the Olsen Europe Shop at The Bay in Park Royal. Shopping is also available online at www. olsenfashion.com.

A guide for modern gals New Yorker talks manners on Vancouver visit

Layne Christensen lchristensen@nsnews.com

DEREK Blasberg seems well positioned to dish the dirt on The Real Housewives of Vancouver, set to air this spring on the Slice Network. The author of New York Times bestseller Classy and Manhattan man-about-town has seen the good, the bad and the Botoxed, according to the liner notes on his latest release Very Classy (Razorbill, $21), an expanded edition of the original. Sitting in the Platinum Suite at The Room, The Bay downtown’s high-end designer showcase, Blasberg is getting ready to welcome Vancouver’s society ladies to an invitationonly cocktail event to promote his new book. Alas, the man who has penned the modern girl’s etiquete guide hasn’t met any of the ladies on the reality TV show and, for now, has only good things to say about Vancouver and its women. “Vancouver is very classy. Everybody is so nice here!,” enthuses Blasberg, clearly modelling the good manners

Patou and Schiaparelli are included in the exhibit, which is co-curated by Vancouver fashion historian Ivan Sayers and features several items from Sayers’ own collection. Handbags, hats, shoes and jewelry round out the show and further illustrate the use of geometric shapes to create sleek, sophisticated designs that was typical of the art deco period. — Layne Christensen

he advocates in his book. Born and raised in the American Midwest, Blasberg moved to New York City as a teenager, bringing with him his old-fashioned sense of values and boyish charm. He landed a job at Vogue magazine after graduating from New York University, and went on to write about fashion and the arts for Interview magazine, Style.com and Harper’s Bazaar among other top publications. A friendship with MaryKate and Ashley Olsen led to a gig editing the twins’ 2008 autobiographical book on style, Influence. And it was during this time that Blasberg had the idea for a guide that would entertain and inform young women about style, etiquette and social interactions. Reality TV is great

entertainment but it doesn’t make for great role models for today’s youth, says the New Yorker, adding he’d like young women to know: “You don’t need to be the drunkest girl in the room to be popular.” Blasberg has packed his latest tome with witty essays, fun Q&A’s, and illustrated photos of what and what not to wear. His advice covers the gamut, from tips on overcoming jet lag to good guest etiquette, and even extends to acceptable Twitter use. His missive to dinner party guests who just can’t put their phone down: “I don’t think you should be live-tweeting at the table.” Blasberg decries what he sees as “a lack of respect for common sense” among today’s youth, who are beset by what he cheekily calls trampisms — “unladylike actions ... that may result in humilliation, notoriety, and/or a ruined reputation.” And he aims to gently steer modern gals back onto the right path. Of course, his book is all in good fun, and Blasberg keeps his tone light and upbeat, but it’s clear that Blasberg, who mixes freely with Manhattan’s social and fashion elite, knows his stuff. Which of today’s young celebrities have class? Emma Watson, says the author. “She’s smart, she’s sophisticated — and she sends thank-you notes.”

WHEN the lights go down at Vancouver’s Anza Club for tonight’s opening night performance of Cameron Fatkin’s latest epic neo-burlesque show, those in attendance will be transported to Neverland, New Orleans’ hottest gentlemen’s club, during Mardi Gras.

Lost Girls of Neverland is a contemporary musical comedy ode to the classic tale of Peter Pan. “As any good director will tell you, you aren’t going to know what the piece is going to look like until the actors find it. So you can only guide them at the beginning towards something, and then what they find and what they bring is what you build on.” Aikins points to the performance of actor Jessica Mayhew in the role of Abigail. “Her vision of her sexual power as a 19-year-old girl is very different than what I might think is in the script. And if she’s going to reach for something that she understands it’s got to come from there,” he says of what Mayhew has brought to the role. “It’s a very tough Abigail. She’s very strong and she’s very willful, and you know right off the top that she’s an angry, vengeful child.” Bringing out the best of actors is nothing new to Aikins, who is widely known as a prominent casting director. For the past 35 years, he has worked on numerous well-known television shows and films, including Unforgiven and Legends of the Fall. Since 2007, the Emmy-nominated Aikins has taught an acting master class at Capilano University. He is also the faculty co-ordinator for the theatre department. He has a master’s degree in directing, and has directed numerous stage productions throughout his career. “There’s really not a lot of difference in how I approach the work,” says Aikins of his two careers. “It’s all to do with focus and your use of energy that makes the difference between whether you’re on camera or you’re on stage.” Although his connection with actors in a casting session is minimal compared to the weeks he spends with a stage cast, Aikins says in both arenas he is directing to get the best performances out of actors. Despite the similarities, however, Aikins has no desire to cross skills and direct a film or television show. “Even though it is a director’s medium, it’s too technical a medium,” he says, adding he likes the theatricality of a stage production. “In television, and more and more in film, if you want something to happen it’s generated for you on a computer. So there’s no imagination required, and there’s so much imagination required in any kind of theatrical piece.” After years of experience in a fickle and highly subjective industry, Aikins says he measures success by his own personal markers and not box office returns. “Whether you’re doing a play or a production, it’s just what you walk away from it with,” he says. “It’s nothing to do with size or the talent involved with it. It’s how you’ve brought actors from one place to another, and I think for me this has been an incredibly successful and wonderful experience.” He also mentions his assistant director, P. Lynn Johnson, as a source of great support on this show. “I think between the two of us we’ve brought these actors a huge long way and that growth is apparent on the stage,” says Aikens. “I know that some people might be daunted by the fact that it’s a three-hour show, but the bottom line is it’s three hours that they will absolutely enjoy. It will go by like crazy.” The Crucible is at Capilano University’s Centre for Performing Arts Feb. 15-18. Tickets: $22/$14/$8.

SLEEP APNEA?

Often snorers also have sleep apnea which causes being tired all day, high blood pressure, heart attacks, strokes, irregular heartbeats (per FDA website). Millions suffer needlessly and can stop their nightly ordeals.

To my surprise, after taking Bell Snoring & Sleep Apnea Relief #23 I really didn’t snore or gasp for air anymore. I sleep through the night and feel rested and refreshed in the morning. Mark Wilson, 40, Hudson, NH ! Sleep apnea capsules worked first night! For last 15 years I had sleep apnea and my doctor made me buy a CPAP machine, which I could not use. Finally Bell #23 helped the first night and every night thereafter. Like a miracle. Unbelievable. Karen Braun, 67, Glace Bay, NS ! For 20 years I was waking up frequently gasping for air. During the day I would start napping every time I would sit down, because I was tired. Since taking Bell #23 sleeping 6 hours is heaven. It made a substantial change in my life. Mary C. Myrick, 62, Jackson, MS !It is such a joy not #23 having to use the CPAP machine. I have had sleep apnea for 10 years. Using Bell#23, my wife says there is no more snoring or stoppage of breathing. It is such a joy to be able to roll to left or right with no hose or mask to deal with. Thank you Bell for a great relief. I suggest anyone with these problems to try it. You will be overjoyed with the results. Wayne Burse, 63, Beamsville, ON. ! Lost my husband because of sleep apnea in 2011. I had sleep apnea, too. I was scared to go to bed and have an heart attack like my husband. After taking Bell #23 I can now sleep for 5-6 hours peacefully without gasping for air. A blessing. Suzie Weigel, 60, Chattanooga, TN No need to make claims. Bell relays 100% truthful user’s free speech. No money is paid for it. No questions asked guarantee.

Heartburn Reflux

The USDA now recommends to eat 50% alkaline food (vegetables, legumes, salads, fruit). Health professionals suggest 80% alkaline food. Unfortunately, North American people eat 95% acidic food (meat, noodles, rice, bread, pastries, sweets, junk food). If you cannot change your diet to USDA’s 50% or closer to 80% alkaline food, consider to supplement with a natural health product that helps to increase your pH alkaline level close to a healthy 7. Ask for Bell Acidic Stomach/Alkaline Balance #39. It’s inexpensive, has no side effects and may eliminate the need for anti-acid pills many people take. As a bonus, an alkaline balanced body prevents many illnesses. See guarantee printed on box. ! Reflux gave me a sore throat and I could not sing in the church choir anymore. After taking Bell #39 I have no more reflux and rejoice in singing again. Helene Giroux, 65, Quebec, QC ! Have family history of heartburn. For last 10 years I suffered a lot with acid reflux. I told all family members about #39 being all natural, giving quick relief and having no side effects. Michael Fasheh, 49, Port Ranch, CA ! Very happy with acid reflux relief. Last 4 years had increasing reflux despite taking antiacid products. I am also trying to eat more alkaline food. Grzegorz #39 Smirnow, 43, Mt. Prospect, IL ! Suffered with reflux, choking and coughing. After starting Bell #39 I feel great. Amazed about the complete relief. Thanks from the bottom of my heart. Katarina Tusa, 63, North York, ON !Was sleeping sitting up to avoid reflux. I thought I had this health problem for life like my other family members. Bell #39 brought quick relief. Can sleep now normally, have more energy, feel great. Bell products are quite different. Virginia Grant, 67, Markham, ON Skeptics may call anybody. All real people with honest statements.

FILM

No love lost in This Means War

■ This Means War. Directed by McG. Starring Reese Witherspoon, Chris Pine and Tom Hardy. Rating: 4 (out of 10)

SHOWTIMES

Julie Crawford Contributing Writer This Means War, the romantic comedy imposter starring Reese Witherspoon, is a puzzle from start to finish. There’s no romance and little comedy in this McG-directed mess: it’s a bad sign when we look to his Charlie’s Angels as a masterpiece in comparison. Two guys are fighting over a girl, that much I took away from the film, shot right here in Vancouver. A pair of hot, virile CIA agents, Tuck (Tom Hardy) and FDR (Chris Pine) fall in love with the same woman, Lauren (Witherspoon), after Lauren’s friend puts an R-rated profile on an online dating site. A few questions right off the bat: why would a hot CIA agent need to find a date online? Lauren apologizes for the photo supplied sleazy profile, but clearly, he answered the ad, so that’s what CHRIS Pine, Reese Witherspoon and Tom Hardy make an awkward ménage à trois in This Means War. he’s into, right? And what’s with the dorky names? There is an irrelevant side plot about a German baddie, which really only serves FDR is a smooth lady-killer; Tuck is a sensitive weekend dad, when he’s not to quench the director’s appetite for quick edits and unengaging action sequences. throwing guys off rooftops. It starts out being about how great Lauren is, but Lauren’s so conflicted. She calls her friend Trish (Chelsea Handler, struggling quickly turns into a “whose is bigger” contest: both men agree to pursue her, within the confines of a PG-13 movie) routinely to ask for advice. But Trish is though by “gentleman’s agreement” they agree not to sleep with her. just in it because she needs a reason to fill her kids’ sippy cups with vodka and Instead of trusting their own inherent charms and Lauren’s good sense, each escape from her chunk of a husband for an hour or two. “Don’t choose the better man assembles his own crack team and wastes the CIA L.A. division’s precious guy; choose the guy who’ll make you the better girl,” she says sagely, in what is resources by tailing, bugging and surveilling Lauren. They notice that she likes probably the film’s longest line. Gustav Klimt and shelter dogs, and plan their dates accordingly. Because Lauren So what happens beyond the happily-ever-after, when the spy team isn’t there to was a gymnast in high school, Tuck arranges for a private trapeze session: he hangs upside down and tells her when to jump, circus-style. (Last time I checked, they didn’t teach trapeze in high school. Or in CIA training.) See Inexplicable page 29

BOOKS

Photos capture artist at work

■ Roy Lichtenstein in his Studio by Laurie Lambrecht The Monacelli Press, 128 pages, $40. Lichtenstein’s bold, graphic paintings helped define the pop art movement. The comic strip influenced artwork provided a vehicle for commentary and parody that he made full use of, and his work became as linked to that style as much as Warhol’s Campbell Soup Can painting. The hard-edged paintings he made in the 1950s opened the doors for the patterns and textured work that followed. Lichtenstein continued to explore his linear style until his death in 1997. Laurie Lambrecht was hired as a studio manager in 1990 and almost immediately began photographing the artist at work. The square format of the Hasselblad she used meshed perfectly with comic strip style framing of his paintings. There are very few photographs of Lichtenstein at work and this collection of photographs stand as a remarkable record of a leading artist immersed in his studio. The subjects extend far past the canvases he was working on. There are pictures of sketch books, tools, fabrics, comic books, scraps of paper and paint, all viewed in his work environment. — Terry Peters

SHELF LIFE

Kate Upton makes a big splash

Earlier this week Sports Illustrated gave David Letterman the honour of introducing Kate Upton as the cover girl for this year’s swimsuit issue. Don’t know who Kate Upton is? Google her name just like millions of other people have all over the world. She’s trending particularly hard in Turkey of all places but according to the latest Google Analytics stats no corner of the globe is immune to a Kate Upton crush. Her first appearance on the Internet was April 3 of last year when she posted a clip of herself on YouTube doing the Dougie at a Clippers game in L.A. and that’s when things started to go viral. The Google search “kate upton dougie” has so far generated 3.6 million views bringing the 19-year-old a lot of attention and a lucrative modelling career. If 170,000 Twitter followers have anything to say about it this won’t be the last we hear of Kate Upton. For more Shelf Life go to www.nsnews.com/entertainment. — John Goodman

anticipate Lauren’s every move or plant pithy pickup lines in Mr. Right’s earpiece? She’s left with a stud who’s a real dud. Witherspoon recently had to choose between Mr. Reliable and Mr. Playful in How Do You Know. But at least Owen Wilson and Paul Rudd sported shades of grey, whereas Tuck and FDR don’t change one iota, unless you count FDR’s inexplicable new appetite for Leo and Kate in Titanic. More puzzling plot points: Angela Bassett has a role as the boys’ crusty CIA boss, who grounds them (shades of The Other Guys), and then completely disappears halfway through the movie. The other female role belongs to Tuck’s estranged wife, who bore a child by him but apparently was dim enough to believe he was a travel agent for all those years, cuts, bruises, and bullet-wounds notwithstanding. At first I thought they were brothers, but one of them is English. They both talk about providing great-grandchildren for Nana, so, brothers-inlaw? (A sexual revelation late in the film kills that theory.) Either way, they are the best of friends, and would take a bullet for each other. That’s what we’re told, anyway. All three characters are so hell-bent on looking chic in wardrobe (slim-fit shirts, skintight minis) that they forget to interact with one another. There isn’t a trace of romance nor bromance to be found anywhere. And if you don’t believe the buddy bond, you can’t buy the movie.

Corrie passed away peacefully at home after suffering a stroke. She leaves behind her husband of nearly 65 years, Willem, children Johan (Laurie), Gerdineke (Conrad) and Dorothy, and beloved grandchildren Megan, Taylor and Spencer. Bill and Corrie came to Canada from Holland in 1951, living initially in Toronto, and moving to West Vancouver in 1957. Corrie was a wonderful homemaker, excelling at cooking, baking and sewing. The girls could show her the cover of any magazine, and in no time flat that dress would roll off the Singer sewing machine like magic. Corrie was also an avid bridge player who enjoyed many a grand slam with ladies in the Vancouver Rotary Club. Sunday morning was dedicated to church where Bill sang in the choir. She leaves us with innumerable lovely memories. We invite you to join us in a celebration of her life at West Vancouver United Church on February 24th at 3:00 pm.

TUCK, Ena Mary June 13, 1920 - Feb. 11, 2012 Sadly, Ena passed away in her sleep at Lion’s Gate Hospital, North Vancouver after a brief illness, 20 years after the death of her beloved husband Sydney. Ena will be truly missed by her children Valerie Rollett (John) and Tim (Daphne), her grandchildren Chris, Nicki , Sarah, Pippa (Richard), her greatgrandchildren Georgina and Naomi, her nieces Susan and Nicki (daughters of her deceased sister, Joan) Born in York, England, Ena married Sydney at the tender age of 18, and was instantly whisked to Haifa, Israel. Returning to the UK in 1947, Ena started the first of several busy hairdressing salons, until she and Sydney 'retired' into hotel ownership near Keswick in Cumbria. In 1990 they moved to Vancouver to be closer to their children. Ena was a person who lived intuitively, warm-hearted, funloving, tiny and energetic with a great sense of style. She loved dancing until well into her 80’s and didn’t forego high heels until she was almost 90. Her sense of fun and style live on in all her female descendants. We thank the staff at Amica , West Vancouver for their loving care during the last six and a half years. A special thank you to the Doctors and staff of Lions Gate Hospital. A celebration of Ena’s life for family and friends will be held at the family residence, March 3rd at 2:00 pm; in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Lions Gate Hospital Foundation.

Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a Sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle! SUDOKU ANSWERS ON SEPARATE PAGE

New BMW M6 is a Teutonic turbo missile

photo supplied

WITH top-notch styling and a new, more-powerful motor, the Hyundai Genesis R-Spec is built to take on Lexus, Infiniti and even Audi and Mercedes-Benz. It is available at Jim Pattison Hyundai in the Northshore Auto Mall.

are also dark, albeit between the spokes — yet for a machine that boasts a larger and more powerful engine designed to deliver more athletic ability, these changes are rather muted. Inside it’s much the same story, no special gauges, or seats, just a set of floormats to denote this isn’t the regular Genesis. That said, the cabin is hard to fault in terms of quality; fit, finish and stitching are first rate, matching some of the best Munich and Nagoya have to offer. There are nice details everywhere, from the door panels to the seats and centre console. The chairs themselves are pretty good, wide with good lateral support, while standard

BMW reveals new M6 coupe and cabriolet As far as I’m aware, our government frowns on private ownership of liquidfuel intercontinental ballistic missiles. Not to worry, just buy a BMW M6 instead. And here it is, the latest iteration of BMW’s blisteringly fast uber-coupe. Powered by the same 560 horsepower, twinturbocharged engine that you can find in the M5, this new car says goodbye to the old F1-style hollerin’ V-10 in favour of a more efficient turbocharged V-8. Wait, did I just say “more efficient turbocharged V-8?” And with a straight face? Either way, as already seen in the new M5, turbocharged Teutonic titans are the wave of the future for one main reason: torque. While the outgoing car needed to be revved up, this new model puts out 500 foot-pounds of thrust starting at a low 1,500 r.p.m.

Hyundai aims even higher

Columnist David Chao reviews the 2012 Volkswagen Beetle in next week’s Rev.

WE already know that Hyundai is not the same company that we knew decades ago.

Today’s Hyundai is blessed with amazing qualities and top-notch styling that make even the best Asian brands blush. In fact, Hyundai is one of the fastest growing automakers in the world; going head-tohead not only with the likes of established American and Japanese players in the volume segment, but encroaching on the luxury elite as well. That means Hyundai has Lexus, Infiniti and even Audi and Mercedes-Benz in its “target list.” Cars like the Genesis sedan have re-defined the concept of what a large Korean-built

four-door is all about and with the 2012 R-Spec — packing an enlarged 5.0-litre V-8, an eight-speed transmission and sport tuned suspension — Hyundai is aiming high. Design One issue that has continued to afflict Korean cars

over the years is rather generic styling. Most Hyundais have traditionally blended into the background, inoffensive but hardly memorable in the looks department, and although that’s changing with vehicles like the Veloster, the same “genericar” look is still true of the Genesis. It looks part old Mercedes E/S-Class, part Infiniti M, especially with that grille and greenhouse. Try to find it in an executive parking lot and you’d likely have to resort to pressing the panic button on the key fob — the car doesn’t stand out. It’s not a bad looking car by any means, but it is also not meant to be “different.” The R-Spec aims to give it a bit more personality — via dark painted headlight surrounds and 19-inch alloy wheels that

New James Bond movie features old-school ride From page 38

Result? 0-100 kilometres per hour in 4.2 seconds, also partially due to the new lighter chassis. Aside from the straight-line stuff, expect all the usual BMW M-trickery to make the big sedan take to the curves and shrug off the laws of physics in a manner that should have Isaac Newton eating his own hair. Tesla launches Model X prototype Moving away from SportsPanzers propelled by liquified dinosaurs for a moment, it’s the latest — ahem — electrifying concept from California-based Tesla Motors. Resembling an Infiniti EX35 with the face of a parrot-fish, the Model X has a super-cool name but is, in essence, yet another dang cute-ute crossover. Or is it? Well, for one thing, the Model X runs only on electrons: it’s a full plug-in electric car. What’s more, the low-slung lithium-ion battery packs mean that you’ve got just as much room (if not more) than you would in a normal CUV: seven-seater capacity and room for luggage too. Then there are the “falcon” style doors which open like — well, Tesla probably wants me to say they’re like the iconic Mercedes-Benz SL300’s gullwing doors, but really they remind me of Doc Brown’s Back to the Future DeLorean. Even better, this innocuous-looking machine will run up to 100 km/h in 4.4 seconds. Even better-er, you can make that sprint with a clean conscience and with plenty of friends aboard. Aston-Martin reunites with Bond franchise No Mr. Bond, I expect you to drive . . . this classic 1964 Aston-Martin DB5. No, it doesn’t have an iPod connector. Stop making that face. So might the notoriously sarcastic “Q” be instructing that most destructive-ofgadgets secret agent, James Bond, for the latest in the series of movies. In Skyfall, due to be released sometime after umpteen months of trailers give all the best bits of the plot away, Jim will be back at the helm of the DB5 from Goldfinger, arguably one of the most recognizable cars in the world. Bond fans will no doubt note that a DB5 already appeared briefly in 2006’s Casino Royale. That was just a loop around the block; this time, expect the classic Aston to dust-off the Ben-Hur axle blades and really go to battle with the baddies. Audi reveals Euro-only RS4 Avant Here we go again with another excellent hothatchback that would sell like

pretzels at Oktoberfest over here — if they’d only ship it to us. It’s Audi’s latest fastwagon, the RS4 Avant. Audi used to bring over a scorching version of their A4-wagon, the much-missed S4 Avant, which boasted 340 h.p., all-wheel-drive practicality and, to my mind, looked even better than the sedan. However, all that stopped in 2008, much to the chagrin of anybody who owned an older one and couldn’t replace it. Let’s rub a little salt in those wounds. If you live in fancy-pants You-rup you can buy an even hotter version of that small wagon. It’s powered by a 450 h.p. version of that glorious Audi 4.2-litre V-8 and boasts big fenderflares, lightweight aluminum construction and a sevenspeed dual-clutch gearbox. Flagship Kia sedan coming, but not for Europe As something of a salve, here is the latest on Kia’s most recent project, a rear-wheeldrive flagship sedan that will be debuting in Korea early this year. Dubbed the KH for now, think Hyundai Genesis sedan in size, and Kia Optima in looks. The whole Kia/Hyundai corporate structure is a funny thing. On one hand, both manufacturers share platforms and engines and factories, but on the other hand, they act as though in direct competition with each other. A strange way of doing business, but it does keep both companies on their toes, and you can’t argue with the success of both Hyundai and Kia in recent years. Don’t be surprised then if Kia’s full-sized sedan differs in some significant way from Hyundai’s Genesis, possibly in the drivetrain. If you’ll remember, Kia launched a concept at last year’s Frankfurt Auto Show that boasted a twin-turbo V-6, something not seen in either company’s model range. Considering Hyundai/ Kia’s obvious competence at turbocharging (the turbo engine in the Veloster Turbo makes 201 h.p. from just 1.6-litres), we might well see a turbocharged option in the higher trim levels. Oh, and one more thing? While the KH will debut in Korea and then later in world markets, one place you won’t find it is mainland Europe or the U.K. Toyota GT86, now in cheapskate version Last week, I got to drive around in a Porsche Cayman R: a stripped-out racing version of the Cayman with less stuff in it . . . for more money. Toyota has a different plan for their upcoming sport coupe. Given the enormous tuning market in Japan, Toyota is offering their GT86

model in a no-frills package for significantly less than the standard model. And when I say no-frills, I really mean it. The tuner-ready model comes with steelies instead of alloys, no stereo, no air-conditioning, and they haven’t even bothered to paint the front and rear bumpers. As a blank canvas, it’s the perfect place to start creating a shiny-paint showcar or turbo-charged drifter.

THE Genesis R-Spec is loaded with high-tech equipment but it is not overbearing. Controls are well laid out and fairly simple to use.

heating (both front and back) plus cooling fans for the front seats are very much welcome features. Ergonomics are pretty sound too, an electrically adjustable steering wheel (tilt and telescoping), memory seat functions; good gauge legibility and straightforward primary controls being definite pluses. Although as you’d expect

of a car in this segment, the R-Spec is loaded to the gunwales with equipment, it’s not overbearing. Compared to some modern luxury vehicle info/entertainment systems, which can be very fussy and difficult to use, the R-Spec’s touch screen menu is fairly simple and intuitive. Performance Shared with the Equus flagship, the 5.0-litre V-8 under the hood of the Genesis

R-Spec is essentially a larger bore version of the 4.6-litre Tau engine found in last year’s Genesis V-8. It’s received a few enhancements over the 4.6, namely a revised valvetrain, direct injection and of course new pistons, which increase both the compression ratio (to 11.5:1 from 10.4:1) along with power and torque. Build quality excellent but styling bland From page 40

at 429 h.p. and 376 footpounds of torque, there’s no denying the 5.0-litre Tau motor is a smooth engine; though it really requires revving to make it work; max power doesn’t come in until 6,400 r.p.m. and torque until 5,000. That essentially means you have to drive this car like you stole it in order to get the best results. The transmission is Hyundai’s own in-house design, yet it’s clear that the mandate with this unit was to deliver decent fuel economy. Punch the gas a little and it feels reluctant to kick down or change up. Even in manual shift mode it’s still a little slow on the uptake, clearly feeling more at home in a luxury cruiser than sport sedan. Where the Genesis R-Spec receives the biggest number of changes, compared with the base car (the regular 4.6 V-8 is still available in the United States but not in Canada) is in the chassis and suspension department. That said, despite tighter damping and bigger sway bars, plus some rather sticky P235/45R19 Bridgestone Potenza tires wrapped around those 19inch wheels, the Genesis R is generally speaking fun to drive but not super sporty. The car goes where you

ask it, cornering rather flat and neutral through the turns, though the feedback from the steering is a bit lacking in comparison to say a BMW 5-Series or even a Mercedes E63 AMG. With big 13.6inch disc brakes at all four corners, stopping simply isn’t an issue with this car, despite its considerable 1,884 kg curb mass. Despite the firmed up suspension and big rims and rubber, when it comes to highway cruising, the R-Spec doesn’t disappoint. You could drive this thing from coast to coast and feel almost as relaxed at your destination as you did your departure point. It also feels stable and secure at highway speeds, in a very German kind of way. Features Priced at $53,499 (the base V-6 Genesis sedan is $39,999), the R-Spec isn’t actually that expensive when you factor in the combination of quality, engineering and performance. There’s a huge roster of standard equipment, adaptive cruise control, park assist, navigation system with eight-inch touch screen, HID headlights and a 608-watt Lexicon audio system that incorporates 7.1-surround sound. Of course there’s plenty of safety technology too: eight standard airbags, active

head restraints, electronic stability control, traction control and anti-lock brakes with Electronic Braking Distribution and Brake Assist. New for 2012 on all Genesis models is a Lane Departure Warning System, in which an audio chime sounds should the vehicle cross the roadway line while in motion. In terms of fuel economy, despite its large, powerful V-8 engine, the Genesis R-Spec is actually quite impressive for a big, rear-drive sedan; observed figures show consumption of 13.2 litres/100 kilometres in the city and 8.2 l/100 km on the highway. Thumbs up Build quality, lots of standard features, good all around performance Thumbs down Bland styling, not as invigorating to drive as some European rivals The bottom line Hyundai’s best attempt yet at a true luxury/performance sedan Competitors BMW 550i Boasting less power on paper (400 h.p.), but more torque (450 foot-pounds), the 4.4-litre twin-turbo V-8 550i also comes with an eight-speed automatic that shifts smoother than that found in the R-Spec. Superb steering and agile handling that delivers excellent

feedback make the 550i a great driver’s car. Despite quality materials inside, the cabin controls are still fussy to use and at $75,990 it costs considerably more than the R-

Spec. Also, in Canada, it’s only available with all-wheel drive. Cadillac CTS-V It’s the ultimate version of Cadillac’s bread and butter mid-size sedan. With 556 h.p. and 551 foot-pounds of torque from its supercharged 6.2-litre V-8, the CTS-V is the best performing American sedan
