A one-month-old pharmacy in Maple Ridge is open and the pharmacist wants to know your name.

“This pharmacy for me is an opportunity to say thank you to the people of Canada,” pharmacist Sayed Atthari said of Medlandia Compounding Pharmacy, which is in a brand new building attached to a medical centre. Medlandia is a 1,400 sq. ft. full-service pharmacy which includes regular prescriptions, compound prescriptions, vaccines, veterinarian prescriptions, and consultations. Sayed remembers when he first came to Canada 27 years ago. “I didn’t speak any English, I didn’t have any money, I didn’t have anything,” he said. “Today, I am grateful for everything my customers have given me and it’s a pleasure to come to work everyday.” A Canadian family from Winnipeg that took Sayed in when he first arrived in Canada sat him down. “Son” they said, “If you have good

intentions, and you mean good, and you work hard, and you show up with a smile at work, it doesn’t matter what you do, you are going to be just fine.” That family even paid his first year’s tuition at the University of Manitoba. So, now it is his turn to give back. “It is my time to remember that moment everyday, and remember people who need my help, and to help people with their medication,” Sayed explained. “To me everybody has a story. Once you get to know people’s story, that is where communication happens, and that is when good things happen.” He doesn’t want a person to take medication just because a doctor said so. He wants people to understand why they are taking it, how long is the duration of the prescription, what are the alternatives, and whether there will be any side effects.

“I want to take the time to engage my patients in thought-provoking dialogue so they can find out why they are at the doctor¹s office, so they can come up with smart questions,” he added. He has two technicians working for him: Ana Maria Maior & Charlissa Newman. He is looking forward to expanding. Sayed moved to Canada from Iranian Kurdistan in 1988. He is married to Kejal, and together they have three children: Samira, 20, Hazhar, 16, and nine-yearold Zhiar.
