Proceeds of crime pays for grants
The civil forfeiture program has given $6 million to organizations throughout the province, including in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows. by Sylver McLaren smclaren@mrtimes.com
Minister of Public Safety and Solicitor General Shirley Bond was in Maple Ridge on Monday to meet with police and see the benefits of a proceeds-of-crime program firsthand. Bond, along with MLA Marc Dalton,
toured the Ridge Meadows RCMP headquarters and checked out some of the equipment the department has been able to buy with grants courtesy of the civil forfeiture program. The most recent grants given to organizations in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows have been to Cythera Transition House Society-The VIP Program, Ridge Meadows Child Advocacy Centre Pilot Project, and Ridge Meadows RCMP. “We had a record year,” said Bond, who said she was impressed with the innovative way in which the local Mounties spent their $6,100 grant.

Two brothers hope council will vote tonight to send their Albion exclusion request to the Agricultural Land Commission. Steve and John Wynnyk appeared before Maple Ridge council’s committee of the whole Monday afternoon asking for help. They want to develop 41 acres of farmland they own in the northwest section of Albion Flats. While they have not discussed any specific ideas for future use of the land at this time, they are hoping council – at tonight’s meeting – will agree to submit their request to remove that land from the Agricultural Land Reserve (ALR). Sherry Gordon, Wynnyk’s consultant told council: “This is a very straight forward request... over the years the land has become unsuitable for viable land-based farm operations... The Wynnyks believe the ALC should decide this, as it is an agricultural issue.” Speculation and issues around the redevelopment of the Albion Flats have been ongoing for decades. In a report last December, the ALC told the District it was not interested in removing land northwest of 105th Avenue from the ALR, but the southeast region would be considered. The Wynnyks would like the opportunity to have the ALC reconsider that stance.

The old roof on the Allco Fish Hatchery’s main building is being replaced.
Leaky roof replaced
Thanks to generous funding from the Pacific Salmon Foundation, the Allco Fish Hatchery will have a new roof on the main building in short order. Work started last week and the project is expected to take four weeks. Fraser Valley Corrections Centre staff and inmates are stripping off the old cedar shingles, doing any needed repairs to the structure, then installing a new roof to match the others in the complex. During heavy rains, some portions of the roof let in a steady stream of water. • More at www.mrtimes.com

Inspiring young runners reach out
A fundraising excursion, that started in Williams Lake, brought Kids Running For Kids to this community for three of its eight days. by Roxanne Hooper rhooper@mrtimes.com
Camping out under the stars at the Albion Fairgrounds and running along the picturesque dikes of Pitt Meadows were among the highlights for a group of Williams Lake residents who trotted into Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows on Thursday, and stayed much of the weekend. But the piece de resistance came Saturday, when this troupe of 65 young runners – ranging in age from six to 16 – as well as their entourage of chauffeuring parents, grandparents, and friends – arrived at BC Children’s Hospital. The participating kids proudly announced, before a large audience of hospital staff, that their fundraising run generated in excess of $77,500 to help sick kids in B.C. The group, calling themselves Kids Running For Kids, is from the Cariboo area of the province, and on June 30 they departed from Williams Lake in a convoy of family vehicles bound for Vancouver. The eight-day, 4,000-kilometre trek – which included runs in both Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows on Friday – was intended to raise money for BC Children’s Hospital since several of the participating young runners had actually used the services of the hospital in the past. Originally, the plan was to run about five kilometres a day along the Trans-Canada

Eleven-year-old Cade Enns, and his little brother Finley, eight, of Williams Lake are credited with conceiving the idea for the Kids Running For Kids fundraiser. Highway through communities en route between Williams Lake and the Vancouver hospital. They weren’t even expected to come to Maple Ridge or Pitt Meadows. But as the numbers of young participants grew, safety became more critical, said Sue Kennedy, one of the organizers. Consequently, the group chose to veer off into smaller communities that would allow children to run on tracks, roads, or paths in 108 Mile, Clinton, Cache Creek, Lytton, Boston Bar, Harrison Hot Springs, and Mission. After their first night of camping in tents and trailers at the Albion Fairgrounds on Thursday, the team gathered at Memorial Peace Park in Maple Ridge early Friday morning. They ran a few laps around the park and were greeted by Mayor Ernie Daykin and several kids and staff from the leisure centre, before heading west to run a six-kilometre section of the dikes between Jerry Sulina
Park at 210th Street and Menzies Park at Harris Road. By the time they reached the end of Friday’s leg of the run – and before heading to a barbecue lunch hosted by the Golden Ears Kiwanis at Pitt Meadows Spirit Square – organizers were boasting that they’d almost surpassed $55,000 – a far cry from their original $25,000 fundraising target. Young event founders Cade Enns, 11, and his eight-year-old brother Finley, were elated by the success. The idea took root last year, when Cade’s school hosted a cross-country run, and a number of families participated. “Everyone thought how great it was,” he recalled, noting that a short time later he and his mother heard about a Vernon family running for the Terry Fox Foundation. That’s when their family started planning a fundraising run of their own. “We wanted to do something really good like that,” Cade said, explaining how they quickly pulled in other local families and picked the children’s hospital as a charity of choice. “It’s turned out great. We’ve had lots of fun,” Cade told The TIMES Friday, in advance of Saturday’s cheque presentation. “I know that when we get to the hospital and see all those kids and see how happy they are that we’re there and that we helped, that will be the best part,” Cade said. And it was. They were treated to a thank you lunch and a tour of the hospital. The kids were still beaming Monday, back home in Williams Lake, realizing that with money still coming in that they could actually surpass the $100,000 mark. • More online at www.mrtimes.com

An 75-year-old man fell to his death from a secondstorey balcony in Maple
Ridge this weekend. Ridge Meadows RCMP confirmed the incident occurred at Willow Manor in downtown Maple Ridge on Saturday morning. Mounties were called to the seniors facility in the 12200 block of 224th Street just before 11 a.m. The fatal fall is not suspicious, and RCMP will not
be investigating, said Ridge Meadows RCMP Insp. Dave Fleugel. The case has been turned over to the B.C. Coroners Service. “This is a very unfortunate incident,” Fluegel said. “There is no sign of any foul play, and this case is now in the hands of the B.C. Coroner’s office.”

Our View
When no news is the best news We’ve devoted a number of pages in recent weeks to what turned out to be a relatively insignificant event. Yes, the Fraser River rose to its highest level in years, but the upshot was a relatively small amount of property damage and some inconvenience: no loss of life, no injuries, no houses swept away by raging torrents. Part of this is simply luck. In 2007, we were all waiting for a promised big flood that would reach 1948 levels. Water levels then were almost half a metre below what we got this year. Why? Luck, in the form of cool weather to keep the snow from melting too quickly on mountains in the Interior. The Fraser River roared and raged and shook the docks, but it did not come close to topping the dikes. But in 2007, something else was happening. Agencies throughout Lower Mainland and Fraser Valley communities tried to get ready for the worst. This year, the water could have been higher. No one would have died unless they had been foolish enough to go wading in the river. Public agencies and private individuals who deal with the river have now had five years – and a couple of similar near-misses with high snowpacks – to practice. That’s important, because we know that, like the big earthquake, the big flood will be back. They don’t call them floodplains for nothing, and thousands of residents in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows, Mission and Abbotsford, and Chilliwack and Langley live on them. The little non-emergencies in which a lot is done – just in case – are valuable. They keep the emergency personnel up to date on what they could face. They make sure that each agency knows how to talk to every other agency. They ensure that when the big flood comes next, we’ll have a well-oiled machine to respond to it. Preferably that response will be from behind well-reinforced and recently inspected dikes. – M.C.

Land use
Gravel adds dangerous traffic
Dear Editor, Apparently, the District of Maple Ridge has the authority to decide whether or not Damax Consultants may extract gravel on farmland at 26313 124th Ave. The area, to our knowledge, and having lived in the neighbourhood for more than 20 years, is zoned residential. It is not as though the residents of this area moved here knowing that there was going to be an operational gravel pit nearby. It appears the Agricultural Land Commission, as Mayor Ernie Daykin said, gives the District “the opportunity to make decisions that affect us – the community.” [ALC defers to local council, June 5, TIMES]. Therefore, their decision should be in favour of the community, including the families living in the residential subdivisions both at 128th Avenue east of 232nd Street and east on 124th Avenue who will be
subjected to noise, dust, and increased commercial gravel truck traffic. Furthermore, the main truck route, the six blocks between 232nd Street and the proposed gravel pit, has at least four streets with large neighbourhoods whose residents need to turn onto 124th Avenue to access 232nd Street or Abernathy Way. This would be a safety concern, should 124th Avenue be congested with commercial traffic. That small two-lane road already provides access for commuter traffic travelling west on Dewdney Trunk Road to Abernathy Way. Adding increased commercial traffic to the local traffic mix could be dangerous. Approval of such a proposal would affect the quality of life for many citizens. The District should oppose facilitating profits for Damax to the detriment of the neighbourhoods. Shirley and Floyd Burnet, Albion

Memory desecrated by bag
Dear Editor, My father recently passed away, and in his memory, his coworkers donated money to put up an engraved bench in Maple Ridge Park. It is in a lovely spot, near the path that goes along the water. I went there to put down a flower and think about my dad for a bit. Someone had left a bag of dog crap on the bench. Naturally, I was angry, but I did the right thing and found a garbage can to put it in. The person who left it there was either lazy, stupid, or perhaps both, as it took me no time at all to locate the appropriate receptacle. I hope next time the person who did it will think twice about leaving a plastic bag of poo on a park bench. By doing that, he or she literally crapped on my dad’s memory. Julie Holman, Maple Ridge
dumping of deleterious substances into water. Both MP Kamp and his boss Keith Ashfield, out here recently to defend the changes, state that changes were needed so that farmers and municipalities could clean their ditches. Of course, the changes removing fish habitat protection have nothing to do with the Enbridge Northern Gateway project which will cross hundreds of fish bearing creeks and streams in B.C., even though it has recently been revealed that Enbridge has been lobbying the Fisheries Department for more than two years to relax fish habitat regulation, to make it easier to build pipelines. Four former fisheries ministers have blasted the changes to the Fisheries Act as a serious weakening of fish habitat protection. Doug Stanger, Maple Ridge

Letters don’t enhance eco-systems
Dear Editor, Let me correct some of PEI MP Lawrence MacAulay’s claims [Randy Kamp must start saving fish, June 28 Letters, TIMES]. Our government was elected on a mandate of job-creation and economic growth, which we are clearly delivering on. The economy continues to grow, and we’ve added 790,000 new jobs since July 2009. However, it is apparent that there’s room for improvement in the way we manage Canadian fisheries. Our government has taken up the challenge by focusing our resources on commercial, recreational, and Aboriginal fisheries. We will still be diligently protecting the habitat, including the food fish, that support these fisheries, and we will now have greater ability to protect sensitive areas and apply higher penalties to rule-breakers. Contrary to Mr. MacAulay’s claims, the budget bill that contained the changes to the Fisheries Act received a significant amount of scrutiny and debate. I sat on a sub-committee that reviewed the environmental section of the bill, including the Fisheries Act changes, for the equivalent of more than a month of regularly scheduled meetings.
Laurie Darcus, Director of Corporate Services 604-465-2433 ldarcus@pittmeadows.bc.ca
More to that point, the minister has just launched consultations to receive feedback on our government’s new approach to fisheries protection. Through a variety of roundtables, meetings, and online input we will work with interested parties to ensure that our program effectively supports the sustainability and continued productivity of Canada’s fisheries. Our goals are to work with Canadians to create the best policies and regulations to apply these new changes and to partner with groups and individuals across the country to further enhance our aquatic ecosystems. Mr. MacAulay and I agree that our fisheries are very important to the many thousands who rely on them for their livelihood, and millions more who enjoy them recreationally. Instead of spending his time writing letters to the editor, I invite him to partner with our government as we make important changes to protect our natural resources for generations to come. There’s more to the Japanese martial art of kendo than simply swinging a big stick. Kendo – two-handed fencing using a bamboo kendo stick, or shinai – blends technique with time-honoured tradition and respect, said Maple Ridge resident Murray Greissel, a second-degree black belt in the art. The 40-year-old full-time firefighter with Vancouver Fire Rescue Service isn’t the only member of the Greissel clan immersed in the world of kendo and iaido (kata using an edgeless practice sword). His 13-year-old son Mason and 12year-old daughter Jusdia are both brown belts in iaido and will soon be testing for their brown belt rankings in kendo. The Greissels are students at Matsu Kai Kendo and Iaido Dojo in east Coquitlam (www.matsukai.org). Iaido is “the study of the true blade, the katana,” Murray explained. Iaido is very similar to kata, or forms, in other martial arts. “Iaido and kendo are both like a wheels of a cart,” Murray said. “Together they help each other make you better as one.” Kendo is one of the oldest martial arts, dating back to the days of the 15th century samurai, Murray explained. He said kendo’s philosophy is body, mind, and spirit. The elder Greissel has studied martial arts since he was nine years old. Over the past 30 years, he has practised judo, shotokan karate, tae kwon do, and kung fu. “Because my dad was RCMP, we transferred a lot, and wherever I went, whatever I was studying wasn’t [offered] where we were, so I studied something new,” Murray said. The family discovered kendo by chance. Murray was buying a rescue knife for work when Mason noticed an imitation Japanese sword hanging on the wall of the store. “They were studying tae kwon do, as well, and Mason said ‘Wow, wouldn’t it be nice to learn how to use one of those?’” Murray related.

The employee selling the knife overheard the conversation. She studies kendo, and ended up inviting the Greissels to visit Matsu Kai, home to roughly 28 students under the tutelage of instructor Bruce Campbell, a sixth-degree black belt in both kendo and iaido. Murray said kendo training is intense, but safe. The only time absorbing a strike hurts is when an opponent doesn’t make a correct hit. “When someone makes a direct strike to the proper targets, it doesn’t hurt at all,” he said, adding with a laugh, “It’s the misses that hurt!” Jusdia added, “It’s kind of fun, hitting people.” Mason said his first exposure to the martial art was intimidating. There is a lot going on in the Matsu Kai dojo, including people yelling, often at the top of their lungs. “It’s very loud. There’s lots of screaming,
there’s lots of yelling, there’s lots of movement,” Murray added. “It’s one heck of a workout, and it’s very mentally challenging. It’s unlike any other martial art I’ve done. Mentally, it’s draining, as well. It’s quite intimidating, but once you get the hang of it, it’s so much fun.” Mason and Jusdia are working on a set of new kata from Japan, which encompasses nine techniques of attacks, parries, and follow-throughs. Mason’s goal is to be an instructor and Jusdia hopes to some day compete for Canada. “She has had a couple of opportunities to train with them,” Murray said. Canada is one of the top kendo nations in the world, along with Japan, Korea, Taiwan, and the United States. “The rest of the world looks out for us,” Murray said. “We’re very well respected. • More online at www.mrtimes.com
